Know when to e-mail a full-fledged press release versus a brief news tip

What’s the difference between a news tip and press release?

News tips announce an event on a specific day. Send them as a short e-mail.

Press releases are often about people, broader topics and areas of human interest. They must be newsworthy.

What’s newsworthy?

• Unusual

• Local

• Timely

• Involves a prominent person or topic

• Has an impact on people’s lives

Examples of press releases• OSU Extension in Coos County offers new class on sustainable landscaping

• OSU Extension in Lake County hires new staff chair

• Forestry agent marks 30 years with OSU Extension in Clackamas County

• Sweet Home girl places first in 4-H livestock judging at nationals

• Forestry program improves environment and self-esteem of at-risk youth

• Master Gardeners in Linn County teach kids to garden
