Primary Dysmenorrhea

• Definition• Etiology• Risk Factors• Pathogenesis• Manifestations• Diagnosis• Scoring system• Principles of management

Dysmenorrhea

• Severe painful cramping in the lower abdomen

• Accompanied by sweating, headache, tachycardia, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, tremulousness

• Occurring just before or during the menses• Occurs in women younger than 20 years

old

Primary Dysmenorrhea

• Etiology– Caused by endogenous prostaglandins (excess

production of endometrial prostaglandin PGF2 alpha or an elevated PGF2 alpha:PGE2 ratio)

• Pain associated with ovulatory cycles

• Pain not associated with obvious pathologic pelvic diseases
