What are “E119 Fire Resistive Frames”?
E119 refers to ASTM E119, “Standard Test Method for Fire Tests of Building Construction and Materials”. It specifically addresses “fire resistive glazing and frames”.
Fire resistive frames and interior curtain wall solutions block the passage of flames and unlike fire protective frames, also block the passage of radiant heat and thermal energy.
This type of solution is required by code when:
- Any frame has glass rated 1 hour or greater
- There is a design intent to replace a wall with glass.
- There is a 20 or 45 minute assembly that exceeds more than 25% of the area of a common wall with any room
- There is an assembly that is more than 25% of the wall length
E119 Products are tested as a wall.

What are ASSA ABLOY “E119 Fire Resistive Frame Solutions”
ASSA ABLOY has formed a strategic partnership with Vetrotech to produce Fire Resistive Frame Solutions
Exclusive agreement to supply Vetrotech Fire Resistive products to meet requirements of E119 and UL 263
Contraflam is a single or multi-chamber fire resistive glazing made of tempered safety glass and sealed to be completely moisture-resistant
In case of fire, the interlayers of the Contraflam glass absorb the energy from the fire, limiting the temperature rise to the non-fire side of the assembly providing protection to people and property

Fire Protection vs. Fire Resistive Know the Difference
Fire-Protection:
– Protects against smoke & flames but not radiant heat transfer
– Limited ratings beyond 45 minutes by code
– Should not exceed 25% of wall area
– Fire-protective product fire ratings
• Glass ceramic (20/45/60/90/180 Minute) (60, 90, and 180 Minute limited to 100 sqin. in doors)
• Wire glass (20, 45, 60 and 90 Minute) (60, and 90 Minute limited to 100 sq. in. in doors)
– Multiple Glass Brands may be used
– Frames have no temperature rise requirement
– Door may or may not be required to have a temperature rise rating for the first 30 minutes of the rating period
Fire-Resistive:
- Protects against smoke, flame AND radiant heat transfer.
- Allows safe evacuation without burn risk from 60-180 minutes
- Fire-resistive product fire ratings:
• 60/90/120/180
- Fire-resistant frames required
- 250o F temperature rise is required for the entire rating period for the glass AND the frame.
- Must use specific brand of glass with the frame. No substitutions
- Door may or may not be required to have a temperature rise rating for the first 30 minutes of the rating period
- Frame and glass thickness increases as hourly rating increases

Fire Protection vs. Fire Resistive Know the Difference
Fire-Protection:
- Fire-rated glazing that can allow radiant heat transfer from one side to the opposite side (ceramic, wired glass, specialty glass)
- Glazing may or may not meet hose stream and/or temperature rise requirements
- Temperature rise requirements are only required for temperature rise door glazing (UL10b / UL10c / NFPA 252)

Fire Protection vs. Fire Resistive Know the Difference
Fire-Resistive:
- Stops fire and radiant heat transfer
- Classified as a “fire resistive wall” rather than an “fire protective opening” and meets the same requirements as a gypsum or CMU type wall
- Both glass and framing system must block passage of heat
- May be used in multi story spans or floor to ceiling sizes, but glass may not exceed manufacturers tested size

Why Fire Resistive Assemblies?
Code Requires Fire Resistive Assemblies when:
– Any frame has glass rated 1 hour or greater
– There is a design intent to replace a wall with glass.
– There is a 20 or 45 minute assembly that exceeds more than 25% of the area of a common wall with any room.
– There is an assembly that is more than 25% of the wall length
Remember, this product is considered as and tested as a wall

Code Requirements
Glazing:
– 703.6 Fire-resistant-rated glazing. Fire-resistance-rated glazing, when tested in accordance with ASTM E119 or UL 263 and complying with the requirements of Section 707, shall be permitted. Fire-resistance-rated glazing shall bear a label marked in accordance with Table 716.3 issued by an agency and shall be permanently identified on the glazing.

Code Requirements
Fire Resistive and Fire Protective Applications:
– If a fire wall has a fire resistance rating of one hour or more only fire resistive frames and glazing can be used in sidelight or transom window frame applications
– Fire protection frames and glazing are not permitted in sidelight or transom window frame applications with a fire rating of greater than 45 minutes.
– Fire doors rated from 60 up to and including 90 minutes are permitted with fire protection glass equal to or less than 100 sq in.
– Fire doors and fire shutter assemblies are permitted

Code Requirements
25% of the Wall Area Limitations:
– 716.6.7.2. Area limitations. The total area of the glazing in fire-protection-rated window assemblies shall not exceed 25 percent of the area of a common wall with any room.
– The phrase “common wall” will limit the size to the actual visible wall that is shared and can be seen in the two rooms. The area of the wall that continues through the interstitial space above a ceiling would not be included when determining the wall size. In addition, if the ceiling height differs on the two sides of the wall, the lowest ceiling height would be used to determine what is considered the “common wall”
25% of the Wall Length Limitations:
– 707.6 Openings. Openings in a fire barrier shall be protected in accordance with Section 716. Openings shall be limited to a maximum aggregate width of 25 percent of the length of the wall, and the maximum area of any single opening shall not exceed 156 square feet.
– Openings in enclosures for exit access stairways and ramps, interior exit stairways and ramps and exit passageways shall also comply with Sections 1019, 1023.4 and 1024.5 respectively.

Code Requirements
25% of the Wall Length Exceptions
– Automatic sprinklers in use
– Opening is serving as a fire door in exit enclosures
– Tested to ASTM E119 or UL 263
– Permitted in Atrium separation walls
– Fire door in a fire barrier separating an enclosure for exits from an exit passageway
Adoption and Enforcement
– Some jurisdictions may not have adopted or just adopted a code edition that includes the requirement. Omaha, NE is an example.
– Many jurisdictions are just now beginning to enforce
– Some Architect’s do not have knowledge of the code requirements
Note: The requirement is not being uniformly enforced. As a result, AADG will NOT be dropping the current Fire PROTECTIVE listings and product
