Automated Solid Waste Collection

Franklin Department of Public Works

January 20th, 2010

System Automation

2 Carts per household (65 Gallons each)– 1 for Recycling– 1 for Trash

No charge for carts Pickup schedule will remain the same (Initially)

Curbside yard waste pickup will remain (6x per year) Curbside holiday tree pickup will remain (1x per year)

Curbside pickup of one bulky item per week (via call-in)

Residents can still Opt-Out (designate an alternate hauler) Additional fees for CRT monitors and TVs, large metal

items and appliances remain

Single Stream Recycling

One cart for all recycling No need to separate recyclables Additional recyclable materials No more leaking containers Recycling carts are distinguished

by a yellow lid

Added Benefits of System Automation

Lifetime maintenance for carts– No additional Cost ($10 per year value)

– No need to purchase trash cans in the future ($15 - $70 a piece)

Improved customer service– With the addition of cart RFID (Radio Frequency Identification), we

are able to monitor the pickup times and verify collection.

Improved service during inclement weather Clean & Neat

– Standardization of carts and collection– Reduced roadside litter from, weather, malfunctioning

containers, poor curbside procedures

Overflow Stickers are available– $3 per sticker (available at DPW and Town Hall)
