Donella Meadows LeadershipFellows Program

Sustainability Institute (SI) is launchingthe Donella Meadows Leadership Fellowsprogram to honor and boost the effective-ness of people whose approach to envi-ronmental and economic sustainabilitydisplays analytic clarity, systemic changeand attention to spirit, values, and mean-ing. Fellows, primarily women, will beselected for their potential to influencethinking in wide circles of people. SI willselect a mix of Fellows from nonprofits,business, government and philanthropy.

Fellows will receive training and coach-ing in systems thinking and organizationallearning. They will address environmen-tal and social issues at two levels: 1)pragmatic projects in their current worksettings, and 2) the systems ‘‘rules’’ ofinstitutions and markets that influence thesuccess of their projects. Fellows will iden-tify concrete projects, tied to their currentwork, that involve diverse stakeholdersaround complex issues of sustainability.

Program Methods and Outline

During each two-year cycle 12–15 Fel-lows will share a program of learningexperiences with each other and with Sus-tainability Institute staff to become moreeffective leaders for sustainability. Fellowswill be matched with coaches from Sus-tainability Institute to negotiate an explicitlearning plan that includes regular check-ins as well as shared design and occasionalco-facilitation of events. Each Fellow willbe supported in new stages of their ongoingwork, grounded in systems analysis, andnurtured by a close network of colleagues.

Fellows will commit in Year One to par-ticipating in one initial 5-day workshop,one 3-day workshop and a 10-day fieldstudy in another culture. In Year Two,there will be a 5-day workshop and final3-day workshop. Fellows will not receive astipend. The program will cover all travel,seminars and other expenses.

Funding Needed

The Donella Meadows Leadership Fel-lows program has been launched with a$100,000 challenge grant from the Mor-gan Family Foundation. SI is looking foradditional donors to help meet this chal-lenge and to fund the remaining $800,000needed for the first two-year program.Please support furthering Donella’s workby donating to the Leadership Fellowsprogram in her name.
