Polish market than this year and a number of those will be introduced at the venue. During the
discussion panels, lectures and presentations, the visitors meet the diversity of Lithuanian culture
and literature. Lithuanian music, film, gastronomy, tourism also will play an important role at this

PROGRAMME
THE MOST CHARMING LITERARY FEAST
During the International Book Fair in Krakow, not only meetings with authors will take place, but also
seminars on the publishing and bookstore industry and the new media will be run. Each year, the
International Book Fair takes over the city. The event is a celebration of books held all over Krakow.
Meetings with authors, literary happenings, theatre plays, conferences, concerts, and exhibitions
take place outside the Fair's premises as well. The programme is prepared to cater for everyone, the
bookworms, the reading fans, and the belles-letters maniacs.
CONTESTS
PRESTIGIOUS SUPPORT
During the International Book Fair in Krakow, the winners of the most important Polish poles and
contests, including the Jan Długosz Contest, Edycja contest for the most-perfectly-edited book,
contest for the best academic textbook, the PIK-owy Laur Prize, the Ranking of Polish Art Printing
Houses, or the Wisława Szymborska Prize (for a poetry collection), are selected. The most important
contest is the Jan Długosz Contest, organized annually by Targi w Krakowie Ltd. The involvement of
the academic community and the competition's association with the International Book Fair in
Krakow guarantees tremendous interest on the part of both booksellers and publishers. The Jan
Długosz Contest is now an essential component of Krakow's calendar of annual cultural events.
Media interest – particularly on the part of trade publications and national dailies – works to
promote this cultural event that combines with commercial activity in an unconventional manner.
This Krakow-based initiative contributes to promoting serious and important books, publications that
are valued within the academic community, with winners receiving a statuette designed by Professor
Chromy. The Jan Długosz Contest is a tremendous opportunity for works from the broadly
understood humanistic fields written by Polish authors and published in our country.
LITERARY AGENTS
CONDUCT FACE-TO-FACE BUSINESS
We are convinced that the International Book Fair in Krakow provides an exceptional opportunity for
literary agents to meet up with such a great number of Polish publishers and establish many new
and successful business contacts. The Fair presents an unique opportunity to meet with the business
partners of exhibitors’ choice in quiet surroundings, in order to negotiate writer’s works. The event is
an important platform for publishing houses interested in the purchase and sales of rights. The
majority of the publishers operating in the Polish market attend this remarkable event, with its
presentation of the widest selection of books, from fine literature and poetry, through to religious
publications, academic and science books, fine art publications, and books for children.

KRAKOW
THINKING ABOUT LITERATURE – SAY KRAKOW
Krakow, home to the International Book Fair, is the capital of literature, the creative city, which has
played an important role in developing the Polish book market and readership. The city’s inhabitants
still lead the readership rankings. Only last year more than 3 million titles were borrowed from
several dozen libraries operating in Krakow. Did you know that…?
In Krakow a foreigner, later called Gallus Anonymous, began working on the first Polish
chronicle – Chronica Polonorum (1112).
In Krakow Kasper Straube’s printing house published the first printed publication in Poland
(1473).

The Krakow’s history is closely related to the life stories of the Polish Nobel Prize winners in

Krakow is a location of the national organizations dedicated to the promotion of literature
and readership in Poland – The Book Institute, the Polish Writer’s Union, the Polish Writer’s
Association.
A number of prestigious prizes are awarded in Krakow annually, including Transatlantyk, Jan
Długosz Prize, Kazimierz Wyka Prize, Goncourts' List: Polish selection, the Wisława
Szymborska Prize.
Krakow is also a home to popular publishing houses classified as key players on the national
market – e.g. Wydawnictwo Literackie, Znak, Biały Kruk.
In Krakow work 80 bookstores and almost 30 antiquarian bookshops, including the oldest
bookshop in Europe, Matras, which dates back to the 17th century.
Several dozen libraries operate in Krakow – the regional library, municipal and district
libraries, as well as scientific, academic, and university libraries.
Popular literary cafes, referring to the tradition of café culture of the turn of 19th century, are
located in Krakow.
Krakow was awarded the prestigious UNESCO City of Literature title (2013).
Krakow is the host of the most important literary festivals in Poland: the Milosz Festival, the
Conrad Festival.
Facts pointed out above make Krakow the perfect location for an international publishing and
readership event.
And the 19th reason (reason for those who do not need a particular reason) – the International Book
Fair in Krakow is worth taking part in.
