Large machining centres
Long reach and high stability are two rivals actively struggling when component sizes are getting big. The great advantage of modular assemblies is that each required tool length can be built with a limited number of adaptive items, each designed to maximize stability.
• With short, more stable assemblies, metal cutting productivity can be maxi-mized.
• From tool lengths greater than 4 × D, dampened Silent Tools adaptors are always benifical.
Machining centre solutions Sandvik Coromant supplies tool assemblies for small to large Machining Cen-tres, covering more machine types than any other supplier with easy to use, productive tool holders.
To maximize metal cutting efficiency and minimize problems, our message is simple: If it’s small, keep it short. If it’s large, go for modular!
Small machining centres
In small machining centres, the critical gauge line sets the limits.
With Sandvik Coromant ultra-compact tool assemblies, like integrated EH, you access otherwise impossible tool lengths and ben-efit from direct transmission of the machine tool’s power, all the way out to the cutting edges.

Turning centre solutions To get the full potential of a turning centre, it certainly needs to be equipped with pro-ductive metal cutting tools and inserts. But what is often neglected is the importance of the turret clamping system and tool holding. These can have a considerable effect on machine utilization and metal cutting efficiency.
Take a look on what Cormant Capto® Quick Change and HP coolant can do to shift from the smaller blue rectangle to the larger yellow.

Metal cutting efficiency + 20%
HP coolant can itself improve the metal cutting efficiency with 20%. This is the consequence of lowered temperature in the cutting zone and improved chip removal.
Coromant Capto HP automatically directs the coolant to the cutting edge. The precision nozzles target the correct point on the insert at a low trajectory angle, creating a hydraulic wedge between the chip and the rake face of the insert.
Also consider:
• Silent Tools® dampened adaptors for productive cutting data in long tool overhangs
• CoroTurn® SL modular tool system for reduced inventory
• Coromant Capto short parting and grooving adaptors (CoroCut® SL) for lim-ited gauge lines

Power generation solutionsA stationary gas turbine is an important part of a gas powered- or modern coal-fired power plant. It includes a wide array of moving components, each presenting a specific machining challenge.
We have the complete tooling offer to take you forward in this area – from standard tools to engineered solutions plus a helping hand when it comes to in-depth application knowledge.
The engineered dampened blade system gives stability and accuracy in internal chambers, with optimized coolant delivery for chip removal from the groove.
The gas turbine is made up of a set of discs fastened onto the shaft, with spacers and discs alternating. These complex parts feature pro-filed pockets with various difficult clearance requirements.
Optimized programming and optimized tools are essential.
• Component: gas turbine spacer disc
• Material: Inconel
• Solution: standard and special tooling for profiling and pocketing

Gear milling for all areasGear milling is no small task when you consider the size of the heavy vehicles and wind mills that some gear wheels need to drive. And with up to 90% of all gear manufacturing involving metal cutting, taking advantage of the potential for increased productivity is essential.
Compared to traditional HSS tools, our indexable insert solutions reduce the cost per machined gear wheel considerably, thanks to higher achievable cutting data and longer effective tool life.
Engineered solutionsGot a special gear profile to be machined? Contact your local sales representa-tive to see our engineered tools offer.

Cost efficient hardened surfacesYou may know that the most cost efficient way to finish hardened surfaces is to use metal cutting methods and CBN-tipped inserts. But did you know that Sand-vik Coromant has taken two steps further when it comes to generating optimal surface finish?
Go for the most cost efficient surfaces in hardened steels!
Xcel, the Formula 1 car
Its clever, patented design makes it finish a surface faster than any other tool or insert. It is the Formula 1 of CBN-inserts. Xcel cuts with a long, lightly-inclined cutting edge that can take a high feed rate yet produce excellent surface finish. The Xcel design has also a very positive effect on the CBN insert wear, making it slow, even and very predictable.
You can apply Xcel:
• When stability is high
• When surface is parallel or perpendicular to compo-nent centerline
• Against shoulder with undercut > 2.6 mm (0.102 inch)
• In continuous and interrupted cuts
• At feed rates > 0.3 mm/r (0.012 in/r)
• ap < 0.25 mm (0.001 inch)
You can apply -WH inserts:
• When surface is parallel or perpendicular to com-ponent centerline (profiling is possible with B-axis turning)
• In continuous and interrupted cuts
• At feed rates < 0.3 mm/r (0.012 in/r)
Xcel
0.40 mm/r (0.016 in/r)

Wiper, the sports car
If Xcel is the Formula 1, the -WH Wiper is a sports car, easy to drive yet a high performer. Its patented edge has a number of blended radii that make it easier to apply than other wiper solutions. The -WH wiper insert generates the same surface finish as a radius insert at twice the feed rate.

Insert mounting instructions for CoroMill® 176 full profile hobFollow this quick insert -changing procedure to ensure that the CoroMill 176 retains its original high performance level.
MILLING
1 Loosen the inserts with just 3 to 4 turns of the torque wrench.
2 Unscrew and remove all wedges and inserts, clean the cut-ter body thoroughly, make sure there is no remaining dirt or particles which could affect the positioning of the insert. Inspect the insert seat, wedge and screw to ensure there is no deformation or wear.
3 Apply Molycote to the screw. Re-mount the wedge and the insert: lightly hold in position while tightening with a torque wrench (3 Nm).
4 Ensure the insert is correctly mounted by checking its align-ment with the cutter body, making sure that there is no gap between the insert and the insert wedge.
5 Visually inspect other areas that are important for a well-functioning tool, such as the coupling, insert seat, keyways.

Technical features• Integral design can shorten gauge line greatly and reduce the number of
interfaces between spindle and cutting edges. Rigidity, stability, precision and productivity are substantially improved.
• Long and slender conical design for clearance and reach with high stability and good productivity.
• Short design allows for shortest gauge line, highest stability and smallest run-out.
• EH coupling has a patented thread profile, designed to provide precision and the highest possible bending strength. It has a full face contact for best stability and is manufactured with tight tolerances to get the best perfor-mance.
Point milling application testThorough testing of the conical EH holders proves that they have performance comparable to Shrink fit with CoroMill Plura conical, when it comes to maximum depth of cut, metal removal rate and total as-sembly run-out (T.I.R.).
Other advantages of conical EH holders include price per insert, rapid insert change and no need for shrink fit equipment.
