ALL-ACCESS URI MEN’S BASKETBALL - SHOW XAVIER MUNFORD (PLAN)

1. Create a focusWhen beginning my internship, I wanted to bring something to the table that I knew about. I know basketball and this internship brought about the opportunity to make our marketability better.

Our television show this past year struggled because it was mostly focused on Coach Dan and not the entire team. Now when actually watching the show it did bring in other aspects of the program but the name gave it a brand. I think any title gives the audience the idea of the focus. The focus of the show should be the program.

To develop a better show, there is tons of research that the marketing staff had already put together and I wanted to have player and staff input.

FOCUS STEP 1. WHAT IS THE MESSAGE

The message of the show needs to showcase the entire program. The best part about the program is the players, their stories, their development over the season and highlighting the victories. The

message of the show needs to also highlight the improvements and growth the program has made. It needs to be positive and have a

theme or topic for each week.

STEP 2. DEFINE THE AUDIENCE

The most significant part of coming up with a show is knowing your audience. Our audience is our fans. We need to

“please” them. We also need to sell our product to donors to make them want to support our program.

STEP 3. CREATE A TITLE

The show title needs to be catchier. The show’s title has been changed to the URI men’s basketball “All-Access” show.

2. What is the purpose

The goal of this show is to inform and entertain the audience provided above. It is important to let fans know what is going on during the week outside of basketball and recap the game for the week. You want to inform them about what it takes to be a part of the program.

PURPOSESTEP 4. START RESEARCH

I WATCHED TONS OF FOOTAGE OF OTHER SCHOOL’S SHOWS AND TOOK NOTES ON HOW THEY INCORPORATED DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE

SEASON.

STEP 5. ANALYZE RESEARCHWITH THE VIDEO FOOTAGE OF OTHER SCHOOLS, I THEN TOOK NOTES

AFTER ALSO WATCHING OUR SHOW AGAIN FROM LAST SEASON. IT WAS ONE DIMENSIONAL AND I THINK MORE SHOULD BE INCLUDED.

STEP 6. MEET WITH STAFF I put together a business plan to meet with different members of the staff and the players. I also brought my plan to my boss and others

involved. I showed them my research and answered their questions.

3 Develop PLAN

◦ NOW THAT I HAVE DONE RESEARCH IT WAS TIME FOR ME TO PUT TOGETHER MY IDEA FOR THE SHOW. THIS IS WHAT I WANTED TO BRING TO THE TABLE!

◦ All-Access Show■ Off Season

■ 30 minute show with a  theme for each week leading up to Midnight Madness■ Examples: Summer workouts, incoming freshmen, a day in the life of a player, a

day in the life of a coach, support staff interview, meet the staff, meet the players

■ In-season■ 1 hour:

■ Footage, Highlights, → 20 minutes for season show■ 15 minutes x & o’s with Coach Dan Hurley in office/ locker room■ 15 minutes interview with player

4 BREAKDOWN Plan

◦ All-Access Show■ Off Season

■ 30 minute show with a  theme for each week leading up to Midnight Madness■ Examples:

■ Summer workouts: Breakdown of highlights, interviews with players post workout, interview with Coaches about what they want to get out of summer workouts, ask players about balancing school and workouts in summer compared to during season

■ Incoming freshmen: Jared Terrell and Jarvis Garrett■ A day in the life of a player: Pick a player in each grade ■ A day in the life of a coach: New Coach Dave Cox ■ Support staff interview■ Meet the staff■ Meet the players

4 BREAKDOWN Plan■In-season■1 hour:■Footage, Highlights, → 20 minutes for season show■15 minutes x & o’s with Coach Dan Hurley in office/ locker room■15 minutes interview with player

■The one hour show needs to go beyond Coach Dan sitting with a reporter and talk about URI basketball

■Involving other staff members in a more productive way instead of interviewing all the time can bring a more viewer friendly nature to the show.
