MANAGER’S CORNER It’s getting to be the time of year where children are outside enjoying the sunshine and warm weather with all of their friends. School is about to end and summer is right around the corner. With so many children playing outside in the coming months, I ask all residents to be especially watchful while driving through the neighborhood and to obey the posted speed limit for everyone’s safety. In turn, please make sure that when your children are outside, you know where they are and what they are doing. e playgrounds, basketball courts, and common areas are all wonderful, safe places to enjoy the beautiful weather. e Teen Center is also an excellent resource for parents with older children. If you have any ideas for the improvement of our community, would like to volunteer at an upcoming event, or would like to suggest a new event for the upcoming months, please stop by or contact the office. I encourage everyone to participate in making our neighborhood welcoming, safe, and enjoyable and want to hear your ideas. ank you, as always, for all that you and your family do for our country, Donna Griffin District Manager 229-888-6662 SPRING CLEANUP Spring is here, and with it comes spring cleaning fever. TIPS AND TRICKSA few helpful tips and tricks are listed below. If you would like to contribute, please e-mail Lacey Williams at [email protected].

The quickest way in the world to dry herbs:Lay a sheet of newspaper on the seat of your car, arrange herbs in a single layer, then roll up the windows and close the doors. Your herbs will dry quickly and your car will smell amazing!

Fresh and Clean Mattress:Have your kids jump on the mattress to loosen dust and other particles, then simply sprinkle baking soda over it, wait an hour, and vacuum it all up.

Squirrel Away:To keep squirrels from eating your plants, sprinkle with cayenne pepper. It won’t hurt the plants, and the squirrels won’t come near it.

Call 229-888-6662 to have pest control exterminate your home. You must stop by the office and fill out a release letter upon each request.

Throw on eco-friendly threads – Organic cotton is breathable, absorbent and available in everything from sports bras to socks.

Eco Yoga – Green up your downward dog with a biodegradable yoga mat.

Make your own energy bars – Dump wasteful packaging and worrying about additives, and save a little money! Fuel up with homemade recipes. Buy in bulk or mix your own sports drinks too. Visit http://www.recumbent-bikes-truth-for-you.com/recipes.html to find a recipe.

BYO Bottle – More than 60 million disposable bottles end up in trash heaps every day. Help cut down on that enormous pile of plastic by re-using. Or even better, dump the bottle and find a stainless steel water bottle, one made with polycarbonate, or any plastic that is BPA Free.

Reduce your carbon footprint by making a few of your own – Instead of driving to the gym, run or walk there for a great (cheap) warm-up. If the gym’s too far, try biking or carpooling. Keep your workout clothes in the car to cut down on extra stops and gas.

Take it to the streets – What’s more green than the great outdoors? With hills and wind providing resistance running and walking on the road can burn more calories than a treadmill. Other activities such as kayaking, hiking and rock climbing can help fend off workout boredom.

Disconnect – Go unplugged. A balance ball, resistance band, and glider plates can give you an excellent all-around workout – and you can take them anywhere. Plus, using your body instead of a machine for resistance is oh-so green.

Recycle: it’s good for your soles – As the miles add up, so does the war on your favorite cross-trainers. There are many businesses (including Nike’s Reuse-A-Shoe) that repurpose worn-out athletic shoes of any brand into sports courts, tracks, and flooring.

APRIL - GREENING YOUR EXERCISE

May 5 - 11, 2014 is the National Turn Off TV Week. The purpose of this week is to re-think the role of television, why we use it and how and what for. This is in addition to assessing its impact on students, teachers, parents, children, individuals, etc. The nonprofit organization TV-Free America asks that you use this week to reassess the role TV lays in your daily lives as entertainer, pacifier, baby-sitter, time filler and background noise. There is a very easy way to participate in Turn Off TV Week, simply switch off or unplug your TV set for seven days and engage in a wide range of substitute activities. We have included a list of activities that not only supports Turn Off TV Week, but also provides ideas and activities that do not use electricity and are “green”. • Insteadofdrivinginyourcarforneighborhooderrands, goforabikerideandsavemoneyongas. • Insteadofplayingvideogames, playaboardgamewiththefamily, savingelectricityandenergyas well as creating family unity. • Insteadofgettingonthecomputer, readagood(usedorlibrary)booksavingelectricityandenergy. • InsteadofwatchingAnimalPlanetonTV,takeatriptotheZoo. • InsteadofwatchingTV,gooutintoyourcommunityandvolunteer!Therearemanygreatorganizations that support “living green”.
