Russia's Military Will Get Bigger, Better, Equipped and Trained

Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin joked that "tanks don't need visas".

There was previously no terrorism in countries where Islamic State militants “now prosper” until outside forces “not sanctioned by the UNSC” interfered, Russian President Vladimir Putin said, stressing the “serious consequences” that followed.

The drills are meant to help the military prepare for the Tsentr-2015 strategic exercises. The war games set to be held in September are expected to be the largest of the 4,000 military drills scheduled to take place in Russia throughout 2015

‘Russia would attack NATO only in mad person’s dream’ – PutinPublished time: June 06, 2015 03:22 Russia is not building up its offensive military capabilities overseas and is only responding to security threats caused by US and NATO military expansion on its borders, Russian President Vladimir Putin told Italian outlet Il Corriere della Sera. Speaking to the paper on the eve of his visit to Italy, Putin stressed that one should not take the ongoing “Russian aggression” scaremongering in the West seriously, as a global military conflict is unimaginable in the modern world. “I think that only an insane person and only in a dream can imagine that Russia would suddenly attack NATO. I think some countries are simply taking advantage of people’s fears with regard to Russia. They just want to play the role of front-line countries that should receive some supplementary military, economic, financial or some other aid,” Putin said. Certain countries could be deliberately nurturing such fears, he added, saying that hypothetically the US could need an external threat to maintain its leadership in the Atlantic community. “Iran is clearly not very scary or big enough” for this, Putin noted with irony. Russia’s President invited the journalists to compare the global military presence of Russia and the US/NATO, as well as their military spending levels. He also urged them to look at the steps each side has taken in connection with the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty since the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Russia’s military policy is “not global, offensive, or aggressive,” Putin stressed, adding that Russia has “virtually no bases abroad,” and the few that do exist are remnants of its Soviet past. He explained that there were small contingents of Russian armed forces in Tajikistan on the border with Afghanistan, mainly due to the high terrorist threat in the area. There is an airbase in Kyrgyzstan, which was opened at request of the Kyrgyz authorities to deal with a terrorist threat there. Russia also has a military unit in Armenia, which was set up to help maintain stability in the region, not to counter any outside threat. In fact, Russia has been working towards downsizing its global military presence, while the US has been doing the exact opposite. “We have dismantled our bases in various regions of the world, including Cuba, Vietnam, and so on,” the president stressed. “I invite you to publish a world map in your newspaper and to mark all the US military bases on it. You will see the difference.” Meanwhile, it would take only 17 minutes for missiles launched from US submarines on permanent alert off Norway’s coast to reach Moscow, Putin said, noting that this fact is somehow not labeled as “aggression” in the media. The US has carried out the oft-cited

strategic bomber flights along Russia’s borders since Soviet times without interruption, while Russia stopped them in the early 1990s and has only resumed them just recently.

The combined military spending of NATO countries is ten times higher than that of the Russian Federation, Putin stressed. America has been setting up “anti-missile systems, bases and radars located in the European territory or in the sea,” despite Russia’s repeated warnings that this undermines international security. Revealingly, it is the United States that chose to withdraw from the ABM treaty limiting anti-ballistic missile arsenals, which Putin believes was “the cornerstone of the entire international security system.” The Russian leader questioned the move: “Did someone expect Russia to disarm unilaterally?” He explained that Moscow had tried to dissuade the US from withdrawing from the treaty, and instead “create an ABM system together, the three of us: Russia, the United States and Europe.” This proposal was declined, and Russia had to, likewise, begin developing “overpowering anti-ballistic defense” systems to ensure strategic balance. According to Putin, Russia has made “significant strides in this area.” “Everything we do is just a response to the threats emerging against us. Besides, what we do is limited in scope and scale, but is, however, sufficient to ensure Russia’s security,” Putin underlined.

Nevertheless, Putin said he views America not as Russia’s rival, but rather as a partner and ally on many pressing world issues, such as global terrorism, Middle Eastern crises and Iran’s nuclear program. “We are not just partners; I would say we are allies in addressing the issues related to non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. We are undoubtedly allies in the fight against terrorism. There are some other areas of collaboration as well. The central theme of Expo Milano…is yet another example of our joint work,” Putin said. Expo Milano 2015 is an international gathering in Milan, Italy, which this year has been promoted under the slogan “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life,” and which Putin will also be visiting. Russia is taking part in the event, presenting its own technologies and innovations.

US accuses Russia of missile violations to cover Europe deployment plans – MoscowPublished time: June 09, 2015 11:31

Iskander high-precision missile system (RIA Novosti/Alexei Danichev)The US is ramping up the controversy over alleged violations of a key missile ban treaty to cover up its own plans to deploy missiles in Europe, a top Russian military official said. Deputy Defense Minister Anatoly Antonov was commenting on a reported plan by the US to deploy nuclear-capable intermediate-range cruise missiles in Europe and Asia targeting Russian territory. The plan was cited by AP, which said it was penned by the office of US General Martin Dempsey, chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff and contained several contingencies for a scenario in which a key missile treaty between US and Russia fails. The deployment may be possible after scrapping the 1987 Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty. The Cold War agreement banned ground-based cruise and ballistic missiles with ranges between 500 km and 5,500 km.

“Apparently, the US is ramping up the issue of ‘Russian violations’ to justify their own ostensibly responsive military action that would be aimed at ensuring American ‘leadership’ in confrontation with the mythical ‘Russian military threat’ that Washington drums up regardless of all facts to the contrary,” Antonov said.

He added that the ministry requested formal comments from the US on the AP report and that if it were true, it would lead to dangerous consequences.

“We stated our commitment to the INF treaty on many occasions. We believe that the return to Europe of American short and intermediate range missiles and their deployment in other regions, from which they would threaten Russia and other nations not following Washington directions would have a negative impact on global security and stability,” Antonov said. He added that the two parties should hold expert discussions of any differences they have, including Russia’s complaints over the US part of the bargain. The INF treaty was signed to get rid of massive arsenals of nuclear missiles that were deployed in Europe and were considered too risky to keep, because their short travel times left little margin for error. Under it almost 2,700 intermediate-range missiles were scrapped by the two sides.

However Washington and Moscow have been trading accusations of violations from the INF treaty for years. The US claims that Russia has a cruise missile launched by Iskander launcher that has a range over 500 km. Another one, called Rubezh, which is currently in development, is classified as intercontinental with a range of 6,000 km, but Washington alleges it can hit targets closer than 5,500 km. Moscow, for its part, accuses the US of deploying intermediate-range missiles in the form of target missiles for testing of its anti-ballistic missile systems. More recently Russia complained that the US is deploying missile launchers in Romania as part of its controversial ABM shield in Europe. The launchers are meant for SM-3 interceptors, but are capable of firing Tomahawk cruise missiles. Normally Tomahawks are launched from warships, but the launchers in Romania effectively make them ground-launched and thus violating the treaty, Moscow argues. Some strategists in Russia are also concerned about the US drone fleet, saying that the operational ranges and pilotless nature of strike UAVs like the MQ-1 Predator essentially make them indistinguishable from short-range cruise missiles. The latest round of the blame game between Russia and the US over the INF treaty came in April, when the US Secretary of State and Russia’s top nonproliferation diplomat voiced their complaints at the UN General Assembly.

Russia MiG-31 Fighter Shoots Down Cruise Missile During Military Exercises A Russian MiG-31 fighter plane intercepted and destroyed a cruise missile that another Russian bomber fired as part of a simulated mission, the Russian Defense Ministry said Thursday. Approximately 250 Russian military aircraft participated in snap-readiness drills this week in the country’s Northwest, the latest in a series of training exercises that have drawn the ire of Western nations in recent months. “The cruise missile was destroyed at an altitude of 300 meters above the ground from a distance of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) from the target,” the Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement, as quoted by Russian-owned outlet Sputnik News. The snap-readiness drills were expected to take place through Thursday.

Russia To Buy At Least 50 Tu-160 Blackjack Bombers, Production Likely To Complete Ahead Of Time Russia will purchase at least 50 Tupolev Tu-160 “Blackjack” heavy strategic bombers when the aircraft's production is renewed, Russian Air Force Commander Col. Gen. Viktor Bondarev announced Thursday. The Tu-160 strategic bombers will be produced simultaneously with the country’s new bomber, called PAK DA.

“The production of the aircraft will be restarted,” Russia’s TASS news agency quoted Bondarev as saying. "To cover all the outlay of the production, at least 50 aircraft will be purchased in course of time.”According to Bondarev, the revival of the Tu-160 production will not interfere with the production of the PAK DA aircraft, which is expected to make its first flight in 2019. The PAK DA bombers are likely to be part of the Russian Air Force in 2023-2025 and would replace existing bpmbers including the Tu-160, Tu-22M3 “Backfire” and Tu-95 “Bear.”In late April, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu had reportedly ordered the resumption of the production of Tu-160 bombers at the Kazan aviation plant in the Republic of Tatarstan in the Volga Federal District. The director of the Kazan aviation plant said Tuesday that the modernization of 16 existing Tu-160 bombers is expected to be completed in 2019, instead of 2020 as previously estimated, IHS Jane's Defence Weekly reported.According to the report, the modernization of Tu-160 bombers includes two major phases. The first phase, which is now completed, involves strengthening the aircraft’s armament, to carry 12 conventional long-range cruise missiles and laser-guided bombs. The second phase focuses on replacing the jet’s radar, electronic navigation and communication systems, IHS Jane's Defence Weekly reported, adding that the aircraft's engines will also be upgraded at a later date. In addition to Tu-160 and PAK DA, Russia is also working on its fifth-generation stealth fighter jet, known as PAK FA, which will enter service in 2016. “We’re completing the aircraft tests and from 2017 they will be serially supplied,” Bondarev said, according to TASS. The PAK FA jets “will not be in any way inferior to US F-22 and F-35 fighters and will surpass them by all practical parameters.”

June 1, Russia has the right to house nuclear weapons on its territory, if it deems this move to be necessary, while this also includes the option of stationing them in Crimea, a statement from the Foreign Ministry read. “Russia obviously retains the right, if needed, to deploy its nuclear weapons anywhere on its national territory, including on the Crimean Peninsula,” the Director of the Department for Non-Proliferation and Arms control at the Russian Foreign Ministry, Mikhail Ulyanov told the RIA Novosti news agency on Monday.

The Russian Defense Ministry has announced that it will intensify combat training in the armed forces 1.5 times during the summer months, in comparison to the war games that were held during the winter season. “On June 1, 2015 the summer training period starts within the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation. The intensity of the forces’ combat training will increase 1.5 times as compared to the winter period,” the ministry said in a statement. The training is scheduled to last until the end of November and will be focused on joint tactical and cross-branch exercises. The planned drills are part of a series of Russian military maneuvers taking place amid international tensions over the Ukrainian crisis and NATO’s military buildup near Russia’s borders. The main objective of the summer training period 2015 will be the preparation of troops for the "Center-2015" exercise scheduled for September. Russian troops will also take part in "Union Shield-2015" military games with the armed forces of Belarus. Those drills are also scheduled for September. The Russian army will also show their skills during the "Army-2015 international games" scheduled for August. Over 2,000 military drills were held in Russia in the winter training period this year across 130 polygons. The ministry also added that the number of bilateral drills grew by almost 45 percent.

ISIS rise provoked by outside interference into Middle East, North Africa – PutinPublished time: May 26, 2015 There was previously no terrorism in countries where Islamic State militants “now prosper” until outside forces “not sanctioned by the UNSC” interfered, Russian President Vladimir Putin said, stressing the “serious consequences” that followed.

“We know what is happening, for example, in the Middle East, in North Africa; we know the problems associated with a terrorist organization, which has appropriated the right to be called the ‘Islamic State” (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL),” Putin said during a meeting with security officials from the BRICS block in Moscow. “But there was no terrorism in the countries where it [IS] flourishes today before an unacceptable interference from the outside happened, not sanctioned by the Security Council of the united Nations,” he stressed. Russia’s president describe the consequences of such interference as “serious,” with the Islamic State currently controlling territory in Syria, Iraq, Libya, Lebanon, Afghanistan and Nigeria. “Correcting everything that’s been happening in the international arena in previous years is essential,” he said. According to Putin, tackling organized crime, terrorism, and financial crime are important issues on the agenda of the BRICS block and the international community as a whole. The BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) are “facing increasing threats due to the violations of the international law, the violations of sovereignty of various states,” he added. After Islamic State jihadists executed 400 people, mostly women and children, in Syria's ancient city of Palmyra over the weekend, the Russian Foreign Ministry urged the international community to denounce double standards in its approach to fighting terrorists and unite in fighting the group. Moscow has labeled IS a threat to “stability and security in the entire Middle East,” saying that the West should “launch efficient cooperation with the governments of Middle East countries, which are directly repelling the IS offensive.” US-led airstrikes against the Islamic State aren’t enough as the group is “acting ever more actively and stops at nothing to reach its goal – the establishment of a trans-border 'caliphate' spanning a vast area from Damascus to Baghdad,” the ministry stressed. The atrocities cause by the Islamic State are “yet more bitter fruit of the policy pursued by the UK, the US and France and their Gulf allies for the past eight years… of fostering violently sectarian anti-Shia militias in order to destroy Syria and isolate Iran” political writer, Dan Glazebrook, stated in his op-ed piece for RT. Unlimited upgrades & value mean Russian T-14 Armata tank is export gem – developerPublished time: May 26, 2015 Russia’s brand new ‘super tank’ Armata T-14 has unlimited potential for modernization, which together with a reasonable production value, significantly increases its export possibilities, the developer said.“This tank has a real potential for modernization, because it’s new and cutting-edge – in our understanding it can be upgraded an infinite number of times,” Oleg Sienko, CEO of Uralvagonzavod Research and Production Corporation, developers of the Armata T-14, told the Rossiya 24 news channel. Uralvagonzavod has managed to create “a platform and the base of the lead vehicle in accordance with top international standards,” he said. According to Sienko, the Armata T-14, just like its predecessor the T-90, is cheaper to produce than modern tanks developed by foreign countries. Reasonable production values and vast

modernization opportunities significantly improve the export potential of the new Russian tank, he said. 'Meter of armor': Armata’s next supreme 152mm gun to sport super-piercing shellAlso on Tuesday, Trade Minister Denis Manturov said that Russia is ready to discuss supply of T-14 Armata with Egypt, RIA Novosti reported. “Uralvagonzavod is looking into the options of delivering T-14 Armata tanks to foreign customers. Of course, we’ll be interested in this at some point, but only after executing the defense order in the framework of the armament program,” the minister said on his visit to Cairo. Twenty ‘super tanks’ have been produced in Russia so far, with all of them being on the Defense Ministry’s shopping list for 2015. According to preliminary estimates, 2,300 T-14 Armata units are required for the Russian Army to be fully re-stocked and combat efficient. The next generation T-14 tank, based on the Armata platform, was unveiled by the Defense ministry at the Victory Day military parade in Moscow on May 9. Its main design feature is the armored capsule for the three-man crew, placed in the front of the vehicle and isolated from the rounds rack for extra safety. Armata T-14’s main armament – a 7.62mm remote-control machine gun and a 125mm smoothbore cannon, are unmanned and fully automated. On Sunday, Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin in charge of the defense industry, praised the Armata T-14, saying that foreign countries lag behind Russia in terms of advanced tank-building technology by some 15-20 years. "Even if they make something similar to what we have made, we will make something else by that time," Rogozin told the NTV channel. Last week, Germany and France announced they’ll be joining forces to develop a new battle tank. The Leopard 3, which is to replace its ageing Leopard 2 by around 2030, would be able to compete with Russia’s next-generation Armata tank, the German Defense Ministry said.

'Better than US-made 5G': PAK-FA fighter to engage sea, air & ground targets

Ran Sukhoi T-50 PAK-FA jet fighter (Reuters / Maxim Shemetov)Sukhoi PAK-FA fifth-generation fighter jet is finalizing tests of its versatile arsenal before deployment next year. Russia’s Air Force chief says there will be no such target on the scene of operations that the fighter would not be able to engage. When compared to American F-22 or F-35 5G fighter jets, Sukhoi PAK-FA (T-50) is going to “outperform them in all technical aspects,” the commander of the Russian Air Forces, Lieutenant General Viktor Bondarev said on Thursday. The PAK-FA fighter jet is going to be truly multirole, being able to equally engage targets “on the ground, in the air and on the sea,” he said, confirming that in 2016 the Air Force will first get the aircraft, then in 2017 the PAK-FA will go into serial production. With the cutting-edge equipment installed on already manufactured machines, there are more features in development to be integrated into the fighter’s systems on later stages, said Bondarev, mentioning “practical stealth” program being applied in the PAK-FA’s development. Earlier this week Vladimir Mikheev, an advisor to the deputy head of the Radioelectronic Technologies Concern [KRET], said that the Sukhoi PAK-FA fighter jet is “already to some degree a flying robot,” where “the reaction of the aviator is a part of the control loop.” He

also said that PAK-FA is going to be less observable on radars than generally recognized American stealth trendsetter, the F-22 fighter jet. “The T-50 is now ahead of not only all other fighters of the Russian Army, but also foreign models. For example, the visibility of the American fifth-generation F-22 fighter is 0.3-0.4 square meters," the developer stressed.

(March 2015), The stalemate over the 4th-gen Rafale fighter jets deal with France has forced the Indian military to accelerate an even larger project with Russia on the joint development and purchase of an equal quantity of 5th-gen fighters.India is now ready to invest $25 billion in the development and purchase of 127 fifth-generation stealth fighter aircraft (FGFA). It will also make concessions to speed up the delivery of fighters and have the first ones available in 36 months instead of the previously envisaged 94 months, sources told The Times of India.

Published time: June 02, 2015 Pratroopers land during a joint Russian-Belarusian tactical exercise in the Krasnodar Russian Airborne Troops, known as the Blue Berets, have prepared a spectacular program for the upcoming Russia Arms Expo 2015, which will include dynamic displays of the newest hardware and live demonstrations of high and low altitude landing types. The Airborne Troops have been the elite force in the Russian Military since before World War II. Running under the motto ‘Nobody but us,’ the Blue Berets always performed the most difficult missions. Russia currently has 45,000 paratroopers, with the number increasing to 72,000 by 2019, the Defense Ministry said. The dynamic display of the combat and movement tactics of the airborne vehicles at Arms Expo 2015 will feature a total of 20 units having their abilities tested in amphibious battlefield scenarios. The paratroopers will show off the newest BMD-4M and BTR-MDM armored vehicles that are expected to enter service later this year, as well as the renowned 2S25 Sprut-SD self-propelled artillery platform in action. Though not shown in action, 11 varieties of equipment used by the landing forces will be shown up close – from 2S9 NONA self-propelled gun and RHM-5 chemical reconnaissance vehicle to mobile reconnaissance and command unit ‘Reostat.’ Around 30 companies, which cooperate with the paratroopers, will present the current and upcoming military tech, including state-of-the-art parachute systems. One of the highlights of the Arms Expo 2015 will be the live demonstration of various options for landing personnel and military hardware by jumps by the Blue Berets. The assault motorcycle group will perform the so-called assault landing, which will see quads and bikes descending from helicopters hovering 2 or 4 meters above the ground. Such an option “significantly extends the landing capabilities of group in remote areas and gives it extra maneuverability, off-road performance and secrecy,” the Airborne Forces said in statement. The Russian paratroopers will also demonstrate low altitude landing, jumping out of Mi-8 helicopters travelling at high speed at 100 meters above ground. “In combat situation, this type of landing is usually carried out immediately after a strike by the attack helicopters in order to achieve abruptness in completing the destruction or capture of enemy targets,” the statement stressed. The airborne program at the Arms Expo 2015 will conclude with skydiving canopy formations performed by the paratroopers. Arms Expo 2015 is scheduled for June 16-19 at the Patriot Culture and Leisure Park, Kubinka, in the Moscow region. It will showcase around 5,000 pieces of cutting edge military hardware – tanks, warships, planes and space technologies – on a 5,000-hectare display area.
