When people talk about survival tactics, air conditioners will be the last thing
anyone will talk about. But, once researchers looked at the numbers they
found that air conditioning units saved more people in the last half century
than any medical or survival tool in
existence. This is because it allowed the
human body to withstand environments
considered too hazardous for habitation
due to extreme heat.
A Cool Way of Living
According to numerous historical records,
the existence of air conditioners was
instrumental in facilitating an 80% drop in the likelihood of someone dying
because of extreme heat. It may be difficult to believe, but air conditioners
weren’t a common fixture in homes until after the sixties. Units weren’t
economical, and only businesses could afford to have them.
Several groups found a connection between seasons exceeding temperatures
of 32°C and an approximate total of 600 premature deaths annually
between 1900 and 2004. One sixth of the total number occurred under pre-
1960 conditions, which means the victims would have had access to air
conditioning technology if only it were available.
Academics found that that premature death because of the temperature
conditions between 1929 and 1959 was
around 2.5% more likely than it is in
contemporary conditions. Air
conditioning technology has made it
possible to reduce the chances of dying
because of heat to just around half a
percent. But even if air conditioning
technology has helped keep people alive
for all these years, experts only see
further expansion in its role especially in the developing world.
Getting Hotter for Longer
One of the more subtle effects of global warming is that it’s increasing the
number of days with temperatures exceeding 32°C. Countries near the
equator are bearing the brunt of that effect.
India, for example, is currently recording an
approximate of 33 days with extremely hot
temperatures. Climate projection models are
predicting that number can reach as much as
a hundred by the end of the century if there
are no significant changes to the variables.
This makes it important for manufacturers to develop technology that makes
more efficient use of power in delivering cooling and heating services.
