    CUTTERBED

Spur Gear Cutterbed The cutterbed is a spur gear design. Each gear assembly and adjacent idler gears can be individually removed and serviced, without complete disassembly of the cutterbed. The spur gear design allows the cutterbed profile to be thinner, allowing closer cutting with less scalloping. This design allows each gear and idler to be serviced individually, reducing downtime and increasing productivity.

    Drive Gear and Shaft

Sealed Bearings Both drive gear bearings and idler bearings are pre-lubricated and sealed. This not only seals the lubrication in; but also seals any contamination out of the bearings. This dra-matically reduces maintenance expense in the event there is a problem in the cutterbed. Since we are not lubricating cutterbed bear-ings with the cutterbed oil, just the tooth con-tact area of the gears, we can use a lower vol-ume of oil, which reduces our power require-ment significantly. This in turn reduces the owners operating expense.

Disc Drive The disc drive splined shaft will shear outside of the cutterbed rather than to damage gear teeth inside the cutterbed in the event an im-movable obstruction is struck in the field. This feature saves downtime and reduces repair ex-penses. Instead of having to replace all the gears and bearings in the cutterbed, the opera-tor can quickly remove the disc, pull out and re-place the sheared spindle assembly, then re-place the disc and be quickly back in the field mowing.

Cutterbed Gears The cutterbed gears have heavy duty, wide profile teeth. The wide profile increases the gear-to-gear tooth contact area, improving the load carrying capacity of the gears. The gear teeth are shaved, which is a higher-grade finish than on standard gears. The shav-ing process reduces the possibility of cutterbed contamination, and allows the teeth to mesh better, providing quieter and smoother running gears. The cutterbed gears have shaved, wide profile teeth, giving higher load carrying capac-ity and smoother operation, for long life and trouble-free operation.

Cage Crop Converyor The crop is conveyed from the edge of the cutterbed to the helper roll, and the 110 con-ditioner roll opening by a rotating cage at each end of the cutterbed. These cage crop con-veyors also help prevent crop from wrapping the cutterbed driveshaft. The cage crop con-veyors smoothly move crop to the conditioner opening, maintaining high output in all crop conditions.

Cutterbed Frame The cutterbed is set into a cradle (1) which helps keep the cutterbed from twisting or flex-ing. Preventing twisting and flexing reduces wear on gear teeth and bearings, which ex-tends the life of a cutterbed. Keeping the cut-terbed rigid saves downtime by prolonging component life.

Spiral Helper Roll (PTD12, PTD15) The helper roll (Turbulence Reduction Roll) lifts the crop from the cutterbed to the condi-tioner rolls. The helper roll allows the condi-tioner rolls to be moved back away from the cutterbed. The amount of air turbulence di-rected forward is reduced, which improves cutoff in light crop conditions. The helper roll helps improve cutoff in light crop conditions, and maintains smooth crop flow in heavy crop, improving machine versatility.

Conditioner Rolls Challenger offers three types of conditioner rolls, so the appropriate roll can be chosen for each situation. Challenger offers more selection of conditioner rolls than any other manu-facturer. The PTD10 is offered with rubber on steel or TiCor rolls. The PTD12 is of-fered with rubber on steel, steel on steel, or TiCor rolls. The PTD15 is offered with the steel on steel rolls only.

Rubber on Steel Rolls The rubber on steel rolls feature engaging rolls with a rubber top roll, and a steel bottom roller. The rolls crimp the crop along its entire length, but to not crush the leaves, for reduced leaf loss. The steel roll is machined and balanced, so a precise roll gap can be set and main-tained, for good windrow consistency.

Steel on Steel Rolls The steel on steel rolls offer a similar crimping action to the rubber on steel rolls. The steel on steel rolls are designed for the custom op-erator, or a high usage machine where rubber roll wear would be an issue.

TiCor Rolls The inter-meshing, spiral-cut, TiCor condi-tioning rolls provide gentle, consistent condi-tioning and long life. TiCor conditioner rolls are made from reinforced rubber tire cores that are stacked and compressed on the con-ditioner roll shaft. The solid TiCor rubber construction allows the rolls to absorb shocks from rocks or foreign objects without being punctured or damaged. Rubber or urethane covered steel rolls are much more susceptible to damage. Once the rubber or urethane cov-ering chunks out, it lowers the conditioning effectiveness and the covering eventually peels off causing imbalance and vibration The tight machining tolerances of the TiCor roll production process ensures even condi-tioning because of a precise consistent roll gap (3), and minimizes vibration for extended machine life. The lugs are shallower on TiCor condition-ing rolls which means the speed differential between the lug (2) of one roll and the valley (1) of the other is less than the speed differential in rubber or urethane covered, deep lugged rolls. This greater speed differ-ential in other manufacturers rolls can cause stripping and loss of crop leaves. With Ti-Cor conditioning rolls, we can thoroughly condition the crop stem without increased leaf loss. The more crop leaves kept in the hay, the better the nutrition content of the hay.

110-Inch Conditioner Rolls The 110-inch wide conditioner rolls allow the crop mat to be spread out, so more thorough conditioning can be done, even in the heavi-est crop conditions. Since the crop mat is thinner, each individual crop stem can be con-ditioned more uniformly. The wide rolls condi-tion the crop more uniformly and thoroughly, increasing the total value of the crop.

Conditioner Drive (PTD12, PTD15) Enclosed spur gears, running in oil, directly drive the conditioner rolls through u-joint drive shafts. Four matched HA-section belts power this conditioner drive gearcase. The belts are reinforced with Kevlar fiber for extra strength and longer life. Kevlar is also the material used in bullet-proof vests and com-posite army helmets. Note: Shields are removed to show belts and gear-case

    Roll Tension Release

Conditioner Roll Pressure Release The conditioner roll tension linkage utilizes an over center cam that allows the rolls to open when an obstacle or clump of hay is encountered in the field. The over center cam will automatically reset the tension after the obstruction has passed through the con-ditioner rolls. No longer does the operator need to stop the tractor and raise the header to eliminate a plug. The roll tension release system allows the potential plug to be ex-pelled without stopping, enhancing produc-tivity.

Spoke Conditioner The spoke conditioner conditions crop by the spoke rotor moving the crop past an adjust-able conditioning panel. The crop rubs against the tines, other crop, and the condi-tioning panel. This rubbing action removes the waxy outer layer from the plant, allowing moisture to be released quickly. The spoke conditioner has 74 free swinging spokes attached to a rotor. The rotor speed is set at 722 rpm. The rotor speed can be sped up to 1030 rpm by installing an optional speed-up kit.

Conditioning Panel The conditioning action can be changed by moving a conditioning panel over the spoke conditioner. The picture shows the panel in the down position, which provides the most ag-gressive conditioning. To reduce the condition-ing action, the panel can be adjusted to the up position. To reduce the conditioning ac-tion even more, the channel at the bottom of the panel can be taken off, and placed on top of the panel.

Conditioning Panel Adjustment The conditioning panel is adjusted by moving the panel adjustment lever, located under the right side hinged shield.

FEATURES AND BENEFITS PTD SERIES DISC MOWER CONDITIONERS

Conditioning Panel Up Crop conditioning is achieved by the tines and conditioner panel scuffing the crop stems, rub-bing the protective wax coating off, allowing stem moisture to be released quickly. The conditioning action can be changed by moving a conditioning panel over the spoke condi-tioner. To reduce the conditioning action, the panel can be adjusted to the up position. To reduce the conditioning action even more, the channel at the bottom of the panel can be taken off, and placed on top of the panel.

Conditioning Panel Down The panel in the down position forces the crop deeper into the conditioner tines, which would provide more aggressive conditioning. The high speed conditioner kit provides addi-tional aggressive conditioning by increasing the rotor speed from 722 rpm to 1030 rpm.

Swathboard The swathboard is adjusted up or down with the swathboard adjustment knob which is lo-cated on the left side of the machine. Adjust-ing the swathboard up diverts the crop flow into the forming shields.

Mainframe Heavy Duty Frame The heavy-duty frame allows the header to be suspended like a self-propelled header, which means that the frame pushes the header through the field. Pushing the header allows it to follow the ground contours better, reducing the possibility of the header digging into the ground.

Hydraulic Transport Lock The tongue swing can be locked into position for roading. A single lever shuts off the oil flow both into and out of the tongue swing cylinder. The lock can be easily engaged or disengaged by the stroke of a single lever at the rear of the machine.

Header Lift Lockout The header can be locked in the up position for transport or machine maintenance. A lock-out valve is located on each of the two header lift cylinders. Ease of use will encourage the operator to use this function even when doing quick maintenance or checks.

Mainframe Tires The PTD10 and PTD12 come standard with ribbed 11L-15 flotation tires, which help re-duce field compaction and smooth operation in rough fields. The PTD15 tires are 31 x 13.5-15. Reduced soil compaction promotes quicker crop regrowth, improving crop vigor and productivity.

Transport Lighting The PTD series of disc mower conditioners meets the latest A.S.A.E. Lighting and Marking Standard for Agricultural Equipment. The warning flashers are rubber mounted to swing away and reset when hit by an obstruction. There are also enhanced taillights with retroreflective (Red-Orange) reflectors using cube corner microprismatic element technology, which gives superior visibility in low light conditions, as well as an SMV sign as standard equipment.

Header Header Flotation The header can float both radially and verti-cally, so it hugs the contours, reducing scal-loping on uneven ground. The flotation is ac-complished by two springs on each side of the machine. The multiple springs provide a much more responsive flotation system than those with a single spring on each side. Good flotation also reduces damage when an ob-struction is encountered. Machine life is ex-tended, and fields are kept better looking.

Cutterbed Shield Curtains The cutterbed shield curtains are held to-gether with magnetic catches. The catches hold the curtains together, to keep material from flying between the curtains. The mag-nets make latching easy and secure. The cutterbed shield curtains held together with magnetic catches form a ring around the cut-terbed reducing the possibility that objects will be thrown out, but are easily unlatched for quick cutterbed access.

Forming Shields The forming shields can be set to the opera-tors preference. The adjustable rear deflector shield slows crop momentum to allow it to fall gently into a tall, fluffy, quick drying windrow. The forming shields can be set to build a windrow any way the operator desires, so crop can be harvested with minimum delay.

Header Swath Shield The swath shield adjustment can be made with minimal effort and no tools. In some high humidity areas, laying out a wide swath speeds curing better than windrows. The operator can choose the windrow or swath width that is right for a particular area or crop. The swath shield can be quickly and easily set to any position from narrow windrow to full width swath, for greater machine versatility.

Skid Shoes Each of the 8 disc cutting units has a skid shoe that provides 140 sq.in. of metal to pro-tect the cutterbed from wear or damage. Wide skid shoes give a longer wear life, and do a better job of floating the cutterbar on soft or damp ground. The 8 wide skid shoes pro-vide better flotation and longer wear life for re-duced maintenance costs.

Hydraulic Header Tilt (Standard on PTD15 Optional on PTD12) The header tilt is controlled by the operator using a dual acting remote control valve. The hydraulic header tilt allows the operator to change the knife angle and cutting height to better match field conditions for increased performance. A tractor with three remote con-trol valves is required. If the tractor only has two valves, a field installed selector valve kit is available as an option.

    Manual Header Tilt

Header Tilt (PTD10, PTD12) The header tilt is controlled by a turnbuckle that regulates the header angle from 0 up to 6. A field installed hydraulic header tilt kit is available as an option. For normal operation, a 0 to 4 header tilt angle is used. A steeper angle can be used when cutting down or rank crop. In the steeper cutting angles, the cut will be wavier, and the possibility of streaking will increase. The header tilt also controls the height of cut. 0 tilt would result in a 3 cut when the header is let all the way down. 6 tilt would result in a 1.3 cut. The header tilt al-lows the operator to change the knife angle and cutting height to better match field condi-tions for increased performance.

Header Drives Side Pivot Tongue (PTD10) The PTD10 has an L-frame design, which in-corporates a side pivot tongue. The tongue is pivoted with a hydraulic cylinder. When in transport position, the left edge of the ma-chine aligns with the left tractor tires, for eas-ier transport. The hydraulic tongue cylinder has an orifice to make the tongue positioning more precise. The hydraulic tongue swing al-lows the machine to easily move from road to field position.

Center Pivot Design (PTD12, PTD15) The Center Pivot Design allows the operator to cut on either side of the tractor, making longer windrows than cutting in a continually smaller circle like is usually done with side tongue machines. The header can also be swung to the side, allowing the operator to steer around objects in the field. This ability increases the operator and machine produc-tivity.

3-Point Swivel Hitch (PTD12, PTD15) The 3-Point swivel hitch attaches to the bot-tom links of the tractor 3-Point lift. This hitch allows shorter turns than are possible with a constant velocity driveline. This saves the op-erator time and eliminates rear tractor tire/tongue contact during tight turns. We have the only swivel hitches that dont pull the en-tire weight of the machine through the gear-boxes. The hitch is reinforced to reduce stress from pull-through on the swivel gear-box shaft and gears. This hitch allows for tighter turns and longer life, and reduced maintenance expense compared to other manufacturers swivel hitches.

Drawbar Swivel Hitch (PTD12 Only) The drawbar swivel hitch allows the same tight turning as the 3-Point hitch but with eas-ier hookup. It easily slides over the drawbar of the tractor rather than having to hook to the tractor 3-Point Lift arms. This is the only drawbar swivel hitch on a center pivot disc machine that doesnt pull all the weight of the machine through the gearboxes. The stress and flex on the gearbox swivel shaft, gears, and bearings is thus reduced. This system will undoubtedly require less maintenance than other manufacturers pull-through de-signs.

Cutterbed Drive The power output of the Header Pivot Gear-box drives a 2B-powerband belt. This is an efficient design with a Kevlar reinforced powerband. This material gives the power-band a very long life for reduced maintenance expense for the owner. This belt drives a gearbox that directly drives the cutterbed through a u-joint driveshaft, the helper roll, and conditioner rolls through a matched set of belts.

    Header Pivot Gearbox

Header Pivot Gearbox (PTD12, PTD15) The header mounted gearbox swivels as the tongue is rotated. A steering arm connecting the gearbox to the tongue keeps the gearbox and driveline in line with the tongue, which re-duces wear on the driveshaft u-joints. A no-maintenance slip clutch and overrunning clutch protect the drive components and the tractor PTO. This system reduces the number and size of u-joints needed in the drive sys-tem.

The kit contains four skid shoes, which replace four standard skidshoes. Wholegoods Kit BK10995 Estimated Installation Time 1.0 Hr. Hydraulic Header Tilt (PTD12, PTD15) The Hydraulic Header Tilt kit provides a hy-draulic cylinder that replaces the header angle turnbuckle. It also contains a cab mounted switch and an electro-hydraulic valve that di-verts the oil flow from the tongue swing circuit to the header angle cylinder. This enables the operator to change the header angle adjust-ment from the tractor cab on the go. This makes the machine more productive because the operator doesnt have to stop the PTO and tractor to go back and make field adjust-ments. The PTD15 kit is used for tractors that have only two remote valves. Wholegoods Kit PTD12 - BK1091 PTD15 BK11000 Estimated Installation Time 1.0 Hr.

Knives Several versions of knives can be or-dered through service parts to contend with different crop conditions. The 11 bottom bevel knife is standard equip-ment on the PTD disc mower condition-ers. Four styles of knives are available: 11 top bevel Provides good quality of cut in most crops and conditions, but if the knife is deflected down, it can scrape the cutterbed. 11 bottom bevel Provides good qual-ity of cut, provides some rock protection. If the knife is deflected by a rock, it doesnt tend to scrape the cutterbed. 11 combination bevel One side is bottom bevel, and the other is top bevel. This knife can be used to compare the quality of cut between the two styles of bevel or so the operator will effectively have both styles with him when he goes to the field. 18 bottom bevel Provides additional lift in down or light crop conditions. Be-cause of the higher lift, the 18 knife takes more power than the 11 knives.

Challenger features to sell compared to the New Holland 1409/1411 and Case IH DCX91/DCX101 Gear-to-gear cutterbed with all gears accessible from the top of the cutterbed for easier

maintenance. Maintenance is easier, all gears are shaved, and bearings are sealed for longer bed life

and quieter running. Low profile cutterbed cuts lower with less crop scalloping than shaft-style cutterbeds. Lower disc rpms create less heat and wear for longer life. Cutterbed efficiency. Crop lifters are not needed across entire cutterbed, conserving

horsepower which means less fuel usage. Faster conditioner roll speed prevents plugging and ensures a more uniform windrow. TiCor or rubber/steel conditioner rolls for fast crop drydown and minimal leaf loss. TiCor or rubber/steel rolls also have a longer useful life than formed rubber rolls. One drain plug and one fill plug for entire cutterbed vs. 8 drain plugs and 8 fill plugs. Challenger features to sell compared to the John Deere 530/730 Gear-to-gear cutterbed with all gears accessible from the top of the cutterbed.

Maintenance is easier, all gears are shaved (quieter running), and bearings are sealed (less risk of contamination damage, lower volume of oil required, less power required; therefore less fuel used).

TiCor or rubber/steel conditioner rolls for fast crop drydown and minimal leaf loss. TiCor or rubber/steel conditioner rolls also have a longer useful life than urethane rolls. Faster conditioner roll speed prevents plugging and ensures a more uniform windrow. Challenger features to sell compared to the Gehl DC2345 Challengers cutterbed uses sealed bearings for both drive gears and idler gears. This

permits a lower volume of oil in the cutterbed; therefore less power consumption. Lower disc rpms create less heat and wear for longer life. Rubber/steel conditioner rolls for fast crop drydown and minimal leaf loss. Faster conditioner roll speed prevents plugging and improves windrow formation.
