AIP NEWSLETTER OCTOBER 20162

The Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP) would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the first Certified Packaging Professional (CPP) for New Zealand, Coster Ngirazi, MAIP, CPP. The AIP asked Coster a few questions about his career and

packaging education and why the CPP designation is so important for the industry...

Q: HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN THE INDUSTRY? WHAT ARE YOUR AREAS OF EXPERTISE?I have been in the packaging industry for nearly 20 years, stretching back to 1995 when I started my packaging career with Unilever Zimbabwe. I have worked in Zimbabwe, United Kingdom and New Zealand. My skills and areas of expertise include New Product Development, plastics materials and processing, packaging optimisation, packaging design, project management, packaging waste management, and packaging validation.

My experience includes FMCG - cosmetics, toiletries and detergents, personal products, food & dairy and retail/general merchandise. I have worked in different packaging roles but mainly as Packaging Development Technologist.

Within Fonterra NZ, my roles included packaging and process development and validation for dairy commodities for four years; new product development for nutritional dairy products in metal cans and sachets and my current role involves providing quality packaging technology outputs in New Product Development (NPD) for Fonterra Global Brands.

Q: WHAT MADE YOU APPLY FOR THE CERTIFIED PACKAGING PROFESSIONAL DESIGNATION?After working in different parts of the world I wanted to have a wider network with packaging professionals. With WPO (World Packaging Organisation) and AIP (Australian Institute of Packaging) formally recognising CPP designation, it was worth giving it a go in attaining the certification. I wanted to get a deeper industry reach and have stronger peer connections worldwide working on multiple packaging fields.

Q: HOW IMPORTANT IS ATTAINING THE CPP DESIGNATION TO YOU AS AN INDIVIDUAL?It is very important and very significant to my career. Adding the CPP designation to my name seals my adventurous packaging career. I have always wanted something very significant for myself in packaging so I did a MSc Packaging Technology at Brunel University in London, UK in 2005 and was enticed to do PhD in Packaging in Michigan thereafter. Attaining CPP designation will provide me some self-satisfaction and a mark of excellence to my career - A sense of belonging to the packaging world.

Q: HOW IMPORTANT IS THE CPP DESIGNATION FOR THE GREATER RECOGNITION OF PACKAGING PROFESSIONALS?Receiving the Certified Packaging Professional (CPP) designation is important as it covers a very broad packaging aspect and has global recognition; it provides a sense of belonging to the packaging world. A must have if you are a packaging enthusiast like me.

AIP NEWSLETTER OCTOBER 2016 3

The Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP) would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the second Certified Packaging Professional (CPP) for New Zealand, Chris Hartwell, MAIP, CPP. The AIP asked Chris a few

questions about his career and packaging education and why the CPP designation is so important for the industry...

Q: HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN THE INDUSTRY? WHAT ARE YOUR AREAS OF EXPERTISE?Some may say too long. I spent approximately 10 years in the food industry in a range of technical and supervisory roles before moving into the packaging industry.

I started in the corrugated case industry with Printpac UEB (which later became CHH) in New Zealand as Quality Assurance Manager, on to Process Improvement and then Regional Technical Manager before moving to the dark side and into a regional sales role for Dairy Packaging with CHH.

After 10 years in the paperboard packaging industry I moved to Unilever as their NZ Packaging Manager, before a family move saw me heading up Fonterra’s Packaging Technical Centre at Whareroa in New Zealand. Following a couple of years there I moved south with Fonterra and have been based at their R&D Centre for the last 12 years as Packaging Innovation and Development Manager.

I have extensive packaging expertise; Packaging Regulatory Compliance, materials technology and supplychain optimisation coupled with the desire to learn something new every day. After a few years you build up a lot of corporate knowledge (you get to see the good and the bad and you learn how to fix things that may have happened in the past) and you build a good network of people that can bring new ideas and make stuff happen. Q: WHAT MADE YOU APPLY FOR THE CERTIFIED PACKAGING PROFESSIONAL DESIGNATION?I applied for the CPP designation because I see a lot of expertise within the industry going unrecognised. Being keen for my team to pursue the designation I thought I might as well lead from the front – if I don’t do it how can I encourage my team to.

Q: HOW IMPORTANT IS ATTAINING THE CPP DESIGNATION TO YOU AS AN INDIVIDUAL?The designation of CPP for the wider group of packaging practitioners I believe is more important than for the individual.

Q: HOW IMPORTANT IS THE CPP DESIGNATION FOR THE GREATER RECOGNITION OF PACKAGING PROFESSIONALS?Having the Certified Packaging Professional designation shows that the industry has people who are highly competent in what they do and that the designation is ‘live’. It is not a designation that you get and then do not need to work at to keep it live – that is the beauty of it.

BEER BUCKET PAINTS A UNIQUE MARKETING AND USE-OCCASION PICTURE

PACKAGING INNOVATION OF THE MONTH

With the beginning of Australian summer just around the corner, brewers will be seeking unique and creative ways of

attracting the attention of Aussie beer drinkers. To that end, retailers Down Under might want to consider the novel way in which Belgium beer brand Vedett has rolled out its latest premium multipack in France.

Playing off the home improvement/DIY trend, Vedett’s multi-pack of premium blond and IPA beers, resembles a large, industrial-size bucket of paint. The beer bucket features graphics resembling a paint roller, which the roller is in the recognizable shape of Vedett’s double-shouldered glass beer bottles. Nested within the six 330ml bottles, Vedett included a branded rinse glass. The combination of the branded bucket and beer glass emblazoned with the Vedett logo, creates strong initial and repurchase consideration – exactly what brewers seek when attempting to engage beer drinkers loyal to the brand as well as those it’s trying to court for the first time.

Contained within the metal bucket are four bottles of Vedett extra blond beer, two bottles of Vedett Extra Ordinary IPA and a branded beer glass – all for the very tidy price of just US$10.81 (14.47 AUD). The information on the secondary pack engages with consumers in an entertaining and fun way, making references to painting, all the while jokingly warning beer drinkers not to paint their walls with Vedett beer. This unusual marketing approach and creative/disruptive packaging design provides the brand with a stand-out retail shelf appearance as well as allows them to connect with a younger and more energetic audience.

The portability factor of this handled bucket also plays directly into consumers’ more active lifestyles. The multi-variety pack reinforce the desire to experience and share a favourite brand with friends outside of the home.

The bucket also speaks to trend emerging among US consumers, and which will or likely already has penetrated other global markets – that being some 63% of US consumersactively seeking packaging they recognizeas having an alternative or secondary use, even if they ultimately want to or do recycleit.

Engaging beer drinkers with both visual packaging cues and creative product varieties has become harder as Australians are drinking less beer than ever, according to Mintel’s Global 2016 Annual Global Beer Report. That said, Aussies consume an average of 53 litres per capita, according to the Brewers Association of Australia and New Zealand.

While that’s no drop in the bucket, per se, Australians’ dwindling consumption of alcohol in general reflects rising health and wellness priorities, as well as rising alcohol taxes. These factors could bode well for makers of premium brews, such as those from Vedett, as Australian consumers are turning to quality over quantity when they do imbibe.

Using such unique packaging and clever messaging as Vedett, might bode well for Australian brewers, who must recognize and respond to the challenge of fitting into new consumer lifestyles.

INNOVATIVE FEATURES• DIY structure and whimsical on-pack message and graphics allude to paint, paint

ingredients, and the task of painting• Large branded metal bucket can be reused as a portable beer cooler or for other

general household chores

CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS• The container is a 3-piece metal bucket. It features an integrated carry handle and

metal press-on lid. The bucket contains a multipack of 6 330ml glass bottles of beerand one rinse glass. The bucket is litho decorated.

The large, metal bucket not only creates differentiation and point of sale appeal, but it works to help make the product portable, which fits with consumers active, on-the-go lifestyle and use occasions. The unique graphics and on-pack messaging connect with consumers on an emotional, even whimsical level.
