Stewardship of TreasureAll parish priests of the diocese will be out of town at a convocation with Bishop Soto from October 7 through 11. For many parishes in town this means that they have to cancel all daily masses during that time. Thanks to generous help from other Jesuits in the area, we will be able to continue to provide our usual evening masses that week. There will be no morning masses from October 8th through the 11th.

Masses will be said: 10/7 at 8:00 AM, and 10/8, 10/9, 10/10, and 10/11 at 5:30 PM. Usual schedule will resume on October 12.

Message From the Pastor October 6, 2019

A Jesuit parish uniting hearts and minds in the Spirit of Jesus Christ

October is a month filled with the feast days of great saints — St. Francis Borgia (Oct. 3rd), St. Francis of Assisi (Oct. 4th), Pope St. John XXIII (Oct. 11th), St. Ignatius of Antioch (Oct. 17th), St. Luke (Oct. 18th), the North American Martyrs Sts. Isaac Jogues, John De Brebeuf and Companions (Oct. 19th), Pope St. John Paul II (Oct. 22nd), Sts. Simon and Jude (Oct. 28th), and St. Alphonsus Rodriguez (Oct. 31st). But the two saints

that I want to draw attention to are two Carmelite nuns, one French and the other Spanish, who shed light on the meaning of faith that Jesus talks about in this weekend’s gospel.

St. Therese of Lisieux, whose feast day is Oct. 1st, offers us encouragement and wisdom in living lives of faith. She once said that “Little things are little things but faithfulness in little things is a big thing.” St. Teresa of Avila, the great Carmelite mystic and reformer, has her feast day on Oct. 15th. She often encouraged people to find God everywhere in their life, especially in the most ordinary things that a person does. As she once said, “Know that even when you are in the kitchen, our Lord moves amidst the pots and pans.”

So, here is the take-away from this weekend’s gospel: Faith isn’t an idea, it’s a muscle. And the more we use that muscle, the stronger it gets. Faith is a verb, not an object or noun. I know that we can talk about “the Deposit of Faith,” but real faith is not simply believing, it’s doing. It’s doing little things. It is being faithful in doing those ordinary little things daily, weekly, monthly, annually. It is what we do that communicates to others what we really believe.

As Pastor David Lose reminds us, “Faith, as Jesus describes it, is just doing your job, just doing your duty, not because of any sense of reward but simply because it needs doing. Faith, in other words, is doing what needs to be done right in front of you and this, Jesus says, the disciples can already do.” Even the simplest things done in faith can have a huge impact. Your faith the size of a mustard seed can do amazing things. In fact, it is already doing amazing things.

Those of you who raise children or grandchildren, you are doing what needs to be done. Those of you caring for a child with special needs, you are doing what needs to be done. Those of you who are living with health challenges or caring for family members who have health challenges, you are doing

what needs to be done. Those of you who care for those in need or protect the vulnerable or reach out to the lonely or befriend the friendless or keep the world going by contributing to the common good, you are doing what needs to be done. It may seem like ordinary stuff to you but, taken together and blessed by God, it is quite simply extraordinary.

It is my hope that this weekend’s gospel will give you the opportunity to pause, to reflect and to realize that the mustard seed faith that God has given each one of you accomplishes so many important things. Jesus would call many of the unnoticed things you do each week faith-full. You show up for work and do a good job. You listen when someone needs to talk. You get the kids off to school. You sit with someone in the cafeteria or coffee shop who looks like they could use a friend. You volunteer at a local homeless shelter. You vote even if the field of candidates seems discouraging. You serve the people of our parish by sitting on the Finance Council or the Pastoral Council or the School Advisory Board. You write a thank you note to someone who has done a kindness. You cook supper. You pray for a neighbor who is having a hard time. And on and on. None of these is a big deal. But it is precisely these kinds of acts that occupy so much of our lives. Don’t just take my word for it, take Christ’s word: all of these are acts of faith.

This week, as you once again go about your ordinary, everyday chores — in the kitchen, in the bathroom, in the garden, at the supermarket — remember that every one of these actions you take for granted are acts of faith. And as the Nike commercial reminds us, Just Do It! After all, that’s what faith in action looks like.

Fr. Mike Moynahan, S.J.

Mission & Outreach

Are you interested in ministering to those who are sick, lonely or homebound? Mission and Outreach is offering a morning of reflection and formation for new and established Xavier ministers to the homebound.

The event is Saturday. October 12th from 9 am to noon in the Church. The first session will be prayer and sharing, and the second session will be formation in chaplaincy and technical skills. The third session will explore ways to better connect our homebound community with the larger parish.

If you have a genuine interest in working with the sick and lonely, please call or email Anne Tropeano, Director of Mission and Outreach at [email protected] or 916-482-9666 ext. 217.

Blessings!

Morning of Relection & Formation for Xavier Ministers

Save the Date — Walk for Life!Join fellow Catholics and Pro-Lifers at the Walk for Life West Coast on January 25, 2020. Our Lady of the Assumption is sponsoring a bus to the event in San Francisco. It's an amazing and uplifting event, and an easy 1.8 mile walk down Market Street. For more information or to reserve your seat, please contact Carolyn Albers at (916) 296-2675. For walk details visit the website at www.WalkforLifeWC.com.

On September 29th, we had our first Catholic Social Teaching Liturgy on "Human Rights and Our Responsibility to the Common Good." 55 people gathered to learn about homelessness in Sacramento County and discuss possible ways St. Ignatius Parish can respond to this crisis. The next meeting will be October 13th after the 9:30 Mass in the Ministries Room.

The Homelessness Research and Response Team has been born. People are being broken down into areas and talking about next steps to animate the parish: advocacy/organizing, direct service, education and research. All are welcome! Join us in this ongoing effort to make a difference for those who are suffering and deeply marginalized.

Stay tuned for more details! In the meantime, visit the Mission and Outreach blog at: www.stignatiussac.org/mo-blog

Hospitality Ministers Needed:It is the goal of St. Ignatius to create an environment of welcome to all who enter her doors. Our Hospitality Ministers are those charged with presenting the welcoming spirit and love of Christ. Additionally, they give support all in attendance, and being aware of the comings and goings during mass. This includes ushering, taking up the collection, and providing registration information to those who would like it. We are looking for people to help build up and take part in this ministry. If you are interested in this extension of the Gospel — to love and serve, please email Alan in Liturgy Office: [email protected] – and include your name, email address, and phone number. Training will be provided the evening of Monday, October 21st. Many Thanks!

The K-8th grade students, faculty, staff and parents took part in a program called Rachel's Challenge. The premise behind this program is to inspire and to challenge all to create a positive climate in school. Rachel's vision was to start a chain of kindness and compassion. Everyone was encouraged to sign a banner that will be hung in our school, to affirm their commitment to this program. Signs of the chain of kindness can be seen in our classrooms and throughtout our school. As Rachel Jo Scott once wrote, "I have this theory that if one person can go out of their way to show compassion, then it will start a chain reaction of the same. People will never know how far a little kindness can go."
