MOthER’S Day RafflEDon’t forget to buy your raffle tickets for the Mother’s Day raffle! We have a great range of prizes to spoil your favourite female relative (or yourself!).

Tickets can be purchased from the BDOC Office, and the raffle will be drawn during class on Sunday 10th May.

Welcome to Session 2 and a special welcome to all the beginners. This is the last session before the weather gets really cold. Remember that your dog still needs the mental stimulation of training, so please keep coming to classes through the winter months (we are here rain, hail or shine!). I am sure you have all noticed that when you have spent the hour at the club in classes that most of your dogs are quite exhausted when they get home. So, if you can’t spend the 30 minutes or so a day walking your dog, do some sessions of training at home. A good session of tricks is great exercise for your dog’s brain, and for the bond that develops between the two of you or your dog and the whole family.

The first third of the year has been a very busy time at BDOC. We have had quite a few fundraising events plus trials in all the dog sports including the first ACT competition for Dances with Dogs. I would like to congratulate all those involved in getting this up and running and especially Angela Hagedorn and Niccola Hardaker.

BDOC turns 40 this year and will be having a celebration for this event on Saturday 24th October. As yet we haven’t a schedule but if any of you have any ideas, know past members who would like to come along or have any photos we would love to hear from you. Please contact me at [email protected].

The canine companion syllabus is getting a re-vamp and is being looked at by a sub-committee of very dedicated instructors headed by Gabrielle Meyer. The new syllabus will hopefully be coming out for session 3. I would like to thank all who have taken part in this huge task. Many of you have had Gabe as an instructor and benefitted from her vast knowledge of dog training. After this session Gabe is taking a bit of a break from instructing and we will all miss her greatly and her valuable input into the running of the club.

The club website has also received a makeover, and I’d like to thank Maelyn Draper for all her hard work on this long overdue project.

We need your help! BDOC is run completely by volunteers. These people do an amazing job as it is very similar to running a small business. Your membership fees cover most of the running costs but we do have to run some fundraising events. These include BBQs held at Home Hardware in Gungahlin each month. We have had to cancel a couple of these due to not having enough people to help out. There is a volunteer’s form in the office where you can list your skills that might be valuable to us and the times you would be available, or you can email us your interest to [email protected]. You might even like to become an instructor or a committee member.

- Jenny (and Sass)

agility reportWritten by Anne Lewis

We have just finished the first session of agility for the year. Classes have been busy and enjoyable for all. Training for agility at the various levels is currently held on Monday nights and Wednesday nights with two classes at different levels being run on both nights. I was particularly pleased with my class who with great determination took up the challenge to perfect their weaving training. Most have seen great improvement over this session.

So far this year BDOC has hosted two Agility evening ribbon trials on Monday 23rd February, and Monday 13th April, and an Agility and Jumping trial on Saturday 14th March. Thank you to all the judges, some of whom travelled from interstate. Also thanks to Charlie Giles our trial manager and his band of many helpers. Without volunteers from the club for stewarding and helping in the kitchen and in many other ways, the club could not run our trials.

The Easter weekend will see a number of us competing at ACT Companion Dog club on both Saturday and Sunday. As well as Agility and Jumping, the three games events will be held. These are Snooker, Gamblers and Strategic Pairs. We all love it when we have the opportunity to participate in games which have different rules and need lots of concentration from handlers.

BDOC next trial will be an Agility, Jumping and Agility Games trial commencing at 9:00am on Saturday 15th August. All are welcome to come along and watch (without dogs) and see what the fun is all about.

Another new intake will commence shortly with some eager new participants. Other classes have been tweaked to place people in the class they will get most value from instructors and will recommence Mon 13th (Agility trial night) and Wed 15th April.

Looking forward to Session 2 and enjoying playing more agility with our dogs!

‘Dancing Dogs’ Converged on Canberra The French, Germans, Brits, Belgians, Welsh, Finns, Aussies and many others strutted their stuff at Canberra’s very first Dances with Dogs competition on Saturday 21 March. Of course, this wasn’t the tri-nations, but locals such as French Bulldog ‘Paris’ and Welsh Cardigan Corgi ‘Zimri’, who were joined by two and four legged competitors from as far afield as Victoria for Canberra’s inaugural competition. We welcomed three interstate DWD Judges to the Canberra competition which was held under the auspices of Dogs ACT: Ms Barbara Murfet (ANKC National DWD Committee Chairperson), Ms Coral Pethers (Dogs Queensland DWD Chairperson), and Mr Tony Turner. Tony, who recently retired to Tuncurry, NSW, was thrilled to judge at Canberra’s first competition, having been instrumental in establishing the sport here in 2010. Our very own Loretta of Australia’s Got Talent fame (you may know her as mum to Jackson who appears on several Campbell’s advertisements) was our wonderful compere. It was a day of glitz and glamour, country and western, Fraggles and lollipops, and everything in between! DWD is a true spectator sport – watching amazing canines and their human partners perform skilful, choreographed routines to music. And with over 50 entries, there was a great line up in all four levels - Starters, Novice, Intermediate and Advanced - and across the two disciplines – Freestyle and Heelwork to Music. Our three BDOC entrants all gained qualifiers:

Heather Swinbourn with her black Miniature Poodle, Elire Nevada Kid, ‘Charlie’, gained their first Freestyle Starters Qualifier on 137.5 performing to Charlie Chaplin Walk. This was a great ‘big top’ routine with great use of a cane and a ‘circus barrel’ platform.

Niccola Hardaker with her Welsh Corgi (Cardigan) CH Llandwyn Crescent Moon (AI) RA HTMS, ‘Zimri’, performed a Fraggle Rock routine to Pukka Pukka Pukka Squeetily Boink, gaining their third Freestyle Starters Qualifier on 136 points and achieving their Freestyle Starters Title.

Cheryl Neal her Belgian Malinois, Ch. Rowenglen Gurlesque, ‘Mya’, gained two Heelwork to Music Qualifiers (161 and 160.5) to the jaunty little number, Portsmouth.

All the competition results are available at We had so many generous donations:

Loretta Rabbitt and Jackson the Dancing Poodle donated $200 for prizes Best Friends Pets Tuggeranong provided $300 in prize vouchers Primal Paws donated three vouchers for a Rehabilitation or Conditioning Consult.

Dr Jaime Jackson BVSc also kindly helped out at the comp. Jill Louise Images Canine Photography provided a free photograph to first place

teams in HTM and Freestyle in all levels in both competitions. (Pics are on Facebook at Jilllouiseimages Canine Photography)

Table Tennis ACT generously permitted us the use their barriers for our competition and workshops.

Ivory Coat who donated four of their delicious treat packs. And we had several place prizes as well:

2 x $30 Itunes vouchers donated by Loretta Rabbitt for the Freestyle routine (any level) with the highest ‘Musical Interpretation’ score in each trial

2 x $30 Itunes vouchers donated by Angela Hagedorn for the Heelwork to Music routine (any level) with the highest ‘Technical Merit’ score in each trial

2 x $25 cash prizes donated by Mara & Richard Herba for the overall highest score in each trial

The competition was held at the Tuggeranong Indoor Multi-Use Sporting Facility, and our wonderful BDOC folk ran the canteen for both our competitors and the several visitors from the medieval festival held down in the archery club paddocks! We also had some FANTASTIC raffle prizes on offer and must say a very big thank you to Janice Gardner for the stunning ‘theatre’ presentations! And of course our many BDOC volunteers, along with our CDC DWD friends, who helped set up and pack down, steward, score, compere music and keep smiling all day long. Canberra’s first event was definitely a howling success and will add to the already diverse range of dog sports offered in the Nation’s Capital. You can see some of the routines (or search for ‘Dances with Dogs Canberra’ on YouTube).

flyball reportWritten by Kate Moskal

It’s been a busy start to the year for the Bullets! We have competed in 5 competitions thus far, including the Nationals which we jointly co-hosted with Four Paws Racing, at the Canberra show on the 28th and 29th February.

Australian National TitlesThe Nationals saw 41 teams compete in a total of 10 divisions. There were teams from Sydney, the south coast and even Queensland and Victoria! It was a huge event to co-ordinate with two rings running simultaneously. The Bullets entered 3 teams: Dodgeda Bullets (Jack, Cleo, Bailey, Louis & Jazz) placed 2nd in division 3, with a best time of 20.055 seconds, an impressive result. Chocolate Bullets (Willow, Pez, Ollie, Juniper, Layla & Coco) placed 3rd in division 6, with a best time of 26.132 seconds. Rusty Bullets (Digby, Pia, Ruby, Frank, Felix & Champ) placed 2nd in division 10, with a best time of 33.076 seconds, a solid effort. A big congratulations to Digby and handler Ross on achieving Flyball Master Exellent (FMX) at the Nationals! Digby has an impressive 700 points!

We were privileged to have Amanda and Geoff Brown from the United States join us for this event. Amanda and Geoff have many years of flyball experience and run a very successful flyball club, DogGoneFast Flyball Club. Geoff judged many of the races over the two days and Amanda ran a workshop the day before Nationals. Many of the Bullet handlers attended this workshop and a few of our lucky dogs had the opportunity to train with Amanda. Lots of valuable training tips were given by Amanda and we have implemented these into our weekly training sessions, to build the capacity of our all dogs.

Other Flyball HighlightsOur latest competition was Howling in the Hawkesbury, held on ANZAC day . We entered two teams, Dodgeda (Cleo, Bailey, Felix, Juniper & Jazz). Green dog Juniper competed very well in the Dodgeda team, gaining a new personal best of 4.49 seconds as start dog. There was some tough competition in this division so despite our best efforts, we placed 3rd in division 3. Rusty Bullets (Ernie, Digby, Pia, Bella, Frank & Ollie) did extremely well, placing 1st in division 8! Each dog got their very own trophy to take home to commemorate their big win! We were also thrilled to see Bella get her mojo back after a short period of not racing. Bella was on fire, flying down to that box with a big grin on her face! A fun and successful day for all! (But some very tired handlers after travelling to and from Sydney in the one day!).

Bullets Perform for the Brumbies! On the 5th April, the Bullets provided the half time entertainment at the Brumbies game here in Canberra! Many of our dogs took part in the demonstration and patrons commented it was the best half time entertainment they have seen in years! Check out the video on the Brumbies website.

Baby BulletsWe have had a large intake of new flyballers at the start of the year. There are variety of new dogs, including Poodles, Schnauzers and working dog breeds.

The Baby Bullets have been working on recalls, going over jumps and practicing ball related skills. Handlers and dogs have been training very hard and we are seeing some great progress from all.

It is wonderful to see handlers and dogs bonding and enjoying training together each week. We look forward to continuing to see the progress of the babies over the coming months. If you and your dog would like to try flyball, please see the office staff to put your name down for the next intake.

Upcoming CompetitionsCome and see the Bullets in action at our upcoming comps!

meet the flyball bulletsName: Cleo Date of Birth: 24/12/10 Breed: Cavoodle Debut: Dapto Dishlickers

Cleo’s exposure to flyball was as a pup at 8 weeks old. She started flyball training as early as she could, picking it up in her stride She found it easy to follow in Bailey’s foot steps (actually following her). Cleo’s first comp was at the Dapto Dishlickers, but she wasn’t quite ready and the ring was too exciting! Cleo showed us that she was now ready after the training day at the Royal Canberra Show. Cleo blew us away at Hounds in the Hill with her composure. She now has her Flyball Dog Champion title and has just obtained her Flyball Master (400) title.

Name: Coco Date of Birth: 04/04/07 Breed: Mini Poodle Debut: Boorowa Fling 2011

Coco thinks training is boring and has a tendency to entertain himself with the ball near the box. However, come race day, he is focused on “what do we want”, “clean runs”, plus his reward of chicken, sausage, and salami,

He did not switch on to the excitement of this sport until the team borrowed the AFA lights in June 2011. Once that light clicked “on” in his brain he has been a consistent and clean runner ever since.

Name: Felix Date of Birth: 02/02/09 Breed: Miniature Schnauzer Debut: Muddies Madness 2011

Felix has been playing flyball for a while, but he has flourished since Carolyn Shrives has been running him in 2014. We love seeing his tail wagging and the smile on Carolyn’s face every time he returns with the ball! Felix is now running for his mum Catherine with a new found interest in speed. We are only a few points away from his Flyball Master (FM) title.

Name: Frank Date of Birth: 03/12/09 Breed: Miniature Schnauzer Debut: Millon Paws Walk 2011

When Frank began flyball he was frightened of people and other dogs, and when his mum Catherine threw a ball he’d look at her like “why did you throw it away if you wanted it?” With support of many

Bullets he picked up the game of flyball quickly and grew in confidence. He has experienced many successes representing the club at Flyball National Championships in 2012, 2014 and 2015. Frank is slowly inching towards his Flyball Master Excellent (FMX) title.
