Essential Questions:

What is a map?How do we use maps?Why is it important to use maps?What is a coordinate grid?Where do you see coordinate grids?Can you name places that maps are used?What would happen if people didn’t have maps?Do you think you could make your own map or grid?

Objectives: After doing a QR code scavenger hunt of “Orlando’s Greatest Theme Parks”, students will design a coordinate grid system of a amusement park 5 specific items.

Mobile Device with QR Code Scanner, QR Code App, Pencils, Crayons or Markers, Teacher Made Grid Handouts, Elmo, Projector

Rationale: The world is built on a coordinate grid. Maps of the world, countries, states, and cities use grids to pinpoint certain locations. Grids are also use to develop new places. Engineers use them when they are designing new places so they will not have the same problems as before.

Sequence of Activities:Anticipatory Questions/Activity:

Teacher will start students off by asking the students to brainstorm the following questions. What is a map? Why do we need maps in our world? Can someone tell me what a grid is? (Teacher will not expect answers aloud. Students are brainstorming.)

Teacher will show this video. It introduces the importance of grids and maps in the real world.

Body of Lesson Plan:

After watching the video clip on coordinate grids, teacher will ask the following

questions.1. Teacher: What is a map?2. Expected Response: Something that tells people where things are located.3. Teacher: Where do you find maps?4. Expected Response: Everywhere. Books, internet, TV, newspapers, handouts5. Teacher: Very good.That is correct. Why are maps important?6. Expected Responses: If someone got lost, they would not know where they was if they

didn’t have a map.7. Teacher: Yes. Correct. Also on the map, there is a GRID. The grid can give a specific

place for someone to find you if you got lost.8. Teacher: Today, we will learn how to use a grid so we can tell people where things are

at specifically. We can’t just say, “It’s over there. We use a numbering system that will tell people where things are located.

9. Teacher: Let’s take a look!

Teacher puts picture of a blank grid on the Elmo.

10. Teacher: As you can see, the grid is labeled two ways. With Letters and with numbers. The Letters go from Left to Right and the Numbers go up from the #1.

11. Teacher: Let’s say the letters aloud. ( Teacher points to letters and numbers as students say them aloud)

12. Students: “A,B,C,D,E,F”13. Teacher: As a class, let’s say the numbers aloud.14. Student: “1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10”15. Teacher: Now remember, a grid is used to tell a specific location of an object

or place. Let’s look a grid of a neighborhood. In a neighborhood, you have…Houses, a library, a park, a 7-eleven store, and a grocery store.

16. Teacher: I will show you how to pinpoint the location with each place using the letters and the numbers on the grid.

17. Teacher: When we read a grid we always start off with reading the columns. In this case, there are letters for each column. Sometimes you may see people read the numbers before the letters, which is ok too. In this class, you will read columns first. As you can see the seven eleven is in the column of E. (Teacher points to letter E and then drags finger up to 7 eleven).

18. Teacher: What column is the grocery store in? 19. Student: Column F.20. Teacher: Good. The grocery store is in column F. What about houses? What

column or columns are the houses located in?21. Student: Column A and Column B. 22. Teacher: Great. Now, since we know the column, now let’s look at the rows. As

you can see the columns have letters and the rows have numbers.23. Teacher: How many rows is it on the grid again? 24. Student: 10 rows.25. Teacher: Looking at the 7-eleven, what row is it in. 26. Student : Row 9 (Teacher points to row 9 and drags finger to 7- eleven

store)27. Teacher: Great. What about the grocery store?28. Student: The grocery store is in 2 rows. Row 5 and Row 6.29. Teacher: Yes. Correct. When we tell the location of the object or place, we must

tell the Column First, then the Row Second. For example.30. Teacher: Let’s look at the library. The library is in Column E and in Row 2. The

correct way to write it so that people understand what we are saying is, “E2”

31. Teacher: We call “E2” the place’s coordinates.32. Teacher: Let’s name the coordinates of the 7-eleven.33. Student: E934. Teacher: What about the grocery store.35. Student: F5 and F636. Teacher: Great. You got it. Take a look at this video reviewing what we just talked about. Remember, in this class we name the column first then the row. However, if someone named the row first then the column, we would still know what they were talking about. There is no right or wrong answer. Students will watch a YouTube video to review skills of finding coordinates.

Part 2: How to use the QR code Scanner1. Teacher: Today you will explore grids by doing a scavenger hunt with QR codes. I will

give you an answer sheet where you must scan the QR code and it will take you to a specific website. However, you must also label the name of the website along with its coordinates.

2. Teacher: To use your QR codes you need to take out your phone or iPad and upload the QR scanner. Here is an example. I want you to scan this QR code and tell me what website this code takes you to.

4. Student Responses: Cool Math.com5. Teacher: Yes. This is how a QR code works. When you scan the code, the reader reads

it and takes you to a specific website. You will take a trip to Florida. Feel free to explore the web sites but you must finish the scavenger hunt.

7. Teacher gives 25 min while students work on Scavenger Hunt. Teacher walks around checking for students’ understanding. Teacher collects papers.

Part 3- Design your Amusement Park.

1. Teacher: We all know how to read coordinates now. You have seen how we use coordinates to locate specific places. Now it is your turn to show me. Today, you will design your own Amusement Park. I will guide you along the way to help you.

2. Teacher passes out Design Amusement Park Paper. Teacher puts paper on Elmo. Teacher reads the directions aloud.

3. Teacher passes out Blank Grid so that students can fill in their specific places of choice.

4. Teacher will collect Designs and grade them according to rubric. ( See below)

Conclusion Teacher will recall students in large group setting. Teacher will remind students that grids are used to locate specific places and when naming the coordinates you should name the column first, then row or row first, then the column.

Lesson Differentiations:Simplifications:

Student will only be responsible for finding 5 QR codes versus 9.Students will label their grid system labeling 2 attraction and 1 restaurant.

Extensions: Given a map of a local neighborhood. Students can design their own neighborhood using a grid system. Students can label with coordinates and make a legend.
