Word of the Day

• Suspicious - write this word 3 times on your whiteboard or a bit of scrap paper.

Definition – to be distrusting of someone or something. Not to believe something is true.

In a sentence – I was highly suspicious of the dark looking cave. Can you use it in your own sentence?

SPaG Starter – What features can you identify

in this sentence?

• “I never done that, I promise!” screamed Mark, which was so loud it could

be heard vibrating off the green, metallic walls.

• The room was hushed, the air was still and the breeze, which had been like a

hurricane, seemed to stop.

How do we make an expanded noun phrase? A

simile or an adverb?

• What are these features of English normally used for?

• Expanded noun phrases – to describe a noun in greater detail using

adjectives

• Simile – to compare an object or person to another thing.

• Adverb – to help describe a verb in greater detail.

• Let’s practice turning a boring old word into one of these features or English

language.

How we make a simile, expanded noun phrase

and an adverb

• An expanded noun phrase is made by adding two adjectives (descriptive words) to a noun. For example – the old, spotted cat.

• A simile is made by comparing an object/person to another thing by using ‘like’ or ‘as’. For example – the wind howled like a wolf.

• An adverb is used to add to a verb to make how the action happened clearer. For example – the wind howled wildly.

Alma

• We are going to watch part of a short video called Alma. As you watch the video have a think about the scenery (setting) in the image and the appearance and actions of the characters in it.

• Let’s write down some key descriptions of Alma and her environment. We need to also describe her appearance as a doll as this is still her character.

My Introduction.

• Peacefully, the crisp, white snowflakes tumbled towards the earth, atop of the sleepy Barcelona suburb, blown by a blustery wind, which whistled through the labyrinth of dark alleys and huddled houses. Alma tried her best to dart and dodge in between each flake, causing her to bounce all over the cobbled path. Her pale pink gilet was the colour of her rosy cheeks and her small button nose, which had been exposed to the chilly weather for just a few minutes too long. Rested on her head, sat a grey bobble hat – warm and snug. This young girl had not a care in the world as her arms waved about playfully as she continued to skip through the cascading snow.

Activity

• Using expanded noun phrases, adverbs, similes and other descriptive language features (senses, personification), describe the setting and Alma as she walked towards and into the shop. You should end your description with a focus on the inside of the shop. Write in the third person as though you were writing about what you saw in the video to someone who hasn’t seen it.

• Optional extras – use a dash or brackets to show extra information

• Start a list using colons.

• Use a semi-colon to replace a conjunction.

• Use our word of the day ‘suspicious’

• Extension – create a paragraph of Alma as a doll and her emotions and what is happening around her.

Diary entry

• Now I would like you to pretend that you are Alma. You have walked into

the shop and you have turned into a doll on the shelf. What happened

throughout your day? How did you feel? What happened once you realised

you were a doll on the shelf ? Did you get upto any mischief?

• You are going to write in first person, writing a diary entry as Alma.

Example

• Dear Diary (well the lone piece of paper that I am writing on),

I write this in the greatest of discomforts. Filled with sorrow and utter bewilderment at my situation. You would not, no, could not, believe it. I’ll try to explain but to do that I’ll need to begin at the start…

A week ago, I wondered obliviously down a snow laden road without a care in the world – in fact I had just been given a new coat by my loving mum – a beautiful, pink gilet. Little did I know that my coat was never going to come off me: it would be part of my plastic prison. For you will be astounded reading this, that I have become one of the hundreds of dolls in Wolf ’s Toy Shop…..
