I am pleased to introduce our newprogramme of courses available for adultsfrom the Darwen Community. For thisprogramme we are working in partnershipwith Blackburn with Darwen BoroughCouncil's Neighbourhoods and LearningService to offer a wider variety of coursesand also courses that can lead to a formalqualification. Many of the courses on offerare again free, however to allow us tosustain our adult learning programme wehave had to make some small charges tosome of the courses.

We offer a wide variety of courses withmost sessions taking place in the evenings.All are delivered in a relaxed andcomfortable learning environment by fullyqualified tutors with a wealth of knowledgeof their specialist areas. The tutors willsupport and encourage your learningthroughout each course

At Darwen Aldridge CommunityAcademy we recognise that there aremany different reasons for signing upto learn or to acquire a new skill. Inthis guide you will find courses thatcould help you shake off the stress ofthe working week, try something youhave always wanted to do or giveyou the opportunity to gain arecognised qualification.

We are constantly seeking ways toimprove and expand the services weoffer to our community and in thecoming year, we will continue to runour Parents’ Panel. Even if you areunable to make the meetings pleasemake your views heard by contactingthe Academy and talking to ourtutors. If you are interested in anyother courses to those offered in thisguide please let us know so we canadapt our programmes to meet theneeds of the community.

Fee remission is available oncertain courses to learners oneligible means tested benefits.They will only have to pay the£5 enrolment fee and will beasked to produce evidence ofbenefit entitlement atenrolment.

Darwen Creates work with a number of local businesses to deliver a series of workshopsdesigned for people who are thinking about starting, have recently started or run theirown business. The programme provides expert advice delivered by entrepreneurs witha wealth of experience. All workshops take place on a Tuesday evening from5.30pm-7.30pm.

Aims/What will you learn?All aspects of treating adults in theworkplace will be included in thecourse including:• First Aid & the law• Casualty management• Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation• Choking• Electrical injury• Poisoning• Bleeding and treatment• Shock• Fractures and treatment• Burns & scalds• Conditions, i.e. Asthma,

Diabetes & Epilepsy

You can take the final assessmentduring the course to gain thequalification. The tutor or courseleader can advise on this.

Emergency FirstAid at Work

Other information:You will need to have a certainlevel of mobility in order to beassessed for the accreditation asyou will need to demonstratecasualty management and CPR.You need to attend 100% of thecourse before you can be assessedfor the qualification. Theassessment covers a multiplechoice theory paper, questions andanswers and practicaldemonstrations.

The course is registered with theHealth & safety Executive and thecertificate is valid for 3 years.

This is an accredited course.

Darwen’sHistory

The course will look at thecritical periods in Darwen’shistory, such as the industrialrevolution, both world wars, andhow it affected the town and itsfamilies.

We will travel down memorylane via photographs, songs,poems and oral accounts.

Ward solution meetings - Your opportunityto raise issues in your ward and be part of thesolution, working with a range of partners,ward Councillors, Community safety team,Police, Environment Team.

Your Call - Providing training, equipment andinformation to enable your to tackle issues inyour area eg, community clean up, tackling antisocial behaviour including dog fouling.

Community Development - Encouragingand supporting local voluntary groups to bemore effective. We offer a wide range ofworkshops specifically developed to meet theneeds of local groups, eg effective minutetaking, accessing funding, working safely, firstaid and food hygiene training and much more.

Sudell Action - Supporting independentgroups to distribute funding for local projects.Sudell Action is a grant giving body who havefunds available to support voluntary projectsin the Sudell ward, if you want to know moreor apply for funding ring (01254) 772023.

Work clubs - Increasing access toemployment opportunities and a wide rangeof support available to help you identify andaddress barriers to work, eg. Job search,accessing the internet, learning new workrelated skills and increasing confidence,through volunteering and accredited learning.
