IntroductionAdhesive Bonding
For almost every manufactured product on the market today, parts have to be assembled and attached to each other. Manufacturers increasingly require higher efficiency, speed, and accuracy from the joining technologies they employ. In addition, demand is continually growing for new methods and materials to assemble products which can both reduce weight and fuel consumption and increase product performance. Adhesive bonding is one of the few joining technologies that can fulfill these requirements.
Bonding is a process designed to join two materials of similar or different characteristics using an adhesive substance.
Sealing is a method for closing peripheral areas against gases or liquids penetrating or escaping, i.e. to avoid leakages.
Insulating is a method to dispense material that prevents or reduces the passage or transfer of heat, electricity, or sound.

IntroductionApplication Competence
A good bonding process relies not only on a high-quality adhesive system but also on the expertise in how to employ it effectively. Our focus is therefore not only on supplying the right system components, but also on delivering the ideal solution for every customer. In order to accomplish this, we closely interact with our customers, get to know the requirements of their manufacturing process, and offer some of the market’s most up-to-date material dispensing technology.
1st Step – Understanding the Materials
Every material has a different set of characteristics, which influences the choice of an optimal dispensing solution.
2nd Step – Understanding the Production Process
Because the production process also influences the dispensing equipment and materials to be used, it is important to carefully examine production methods to determine which dispensing systems and materials can be used.
3rd Step – Choosing the Solution
After completing the first two steps, one or more solutions are likely possible. SCA helps to choose the solution that is the perfect match for the processes.

IntroductionFocus Segments
Automotive Body in White
In the body shop, sheet metal is joined to form the chassis of a car. The applied adhesives fulfill several functions, such as increasing crash performance, vehicle stiffness, and resistance against corrosion in hem flange areas. Depending on the joining task, there are several methods available to fulfill the corresponding requirements.
Structural BondingTypically the high-strength, high-viscosity ad-hesives which are used to join metal sheets are dispensed as a continuous bead or as a stitched bead.
So called “stitching” of the bead is a popular method to reduce the environmental impact of spot welding in combination with adhesives. Through high-speed valves, a bead is precisely interrupted where weld spots are to be placed. Furthermore, constrictions allow adjustment of the amount of applied material according to component shape. Apart from reducing the welding fumes and the resulting need for high- powered ventilation systems, also less material is used, which impacts the cost efficiency in the body shop.
Stiffening and Anti-FlutterDoors, hoods, and bonnets are often joined from several parts which have to be connected elas-tically to reduce the vulnerability to vibrations and noisy sounds during the later operation of the car. The dispensed beads or dots act both as dampeners and spacers between the inner and outer parts.
Hem Flange BondingThe hemmed seams of add-on and hang-on parts like doors and bonnets have to be precise-ly filled with high-strength adhesive to elim-inate the risk of corrosion. Although a simple bead may sometimes be used, the favored way many customers achieve repeatable high qual-ity in hem flange bonding is the by employing Swirl technology.

IntroductionFocus Segments
Automotive Body in White 2
With lightweight material mixes on the rise in automotive construction, some structural bonds may need to be performed after the paint shop process. Due to the late position of the bonding in the automotive value creation chain, the applications have to be repeatably flawless to avoid costly errors.
Surface PreparationAfter the application of paint coats, the surfaces of the joining parts have to be prepared to ensure ideal adhesive properties. The typical steps include a spray application for cleaner agent, primer, and/or activator.
Multi-Component Structural BondingTwo- or more-component adhesives have the ability to cure in a very short and defined timeframe without the need for external curing influences like heat or humidity. This makes them a prominent choice for bonding tasks after which the part may not pass an oven.In multi-component bonding, the mixing ratio of the components has to be precisely regulated to reach the required curing behavior, independent of different cycle times and material or part temperature fluctuations.

IntroductionFocus Segments
Automotive Paint Shop
After a car chassis receives its initial coatings, several applications of fluid materials improve its long-term resistance against corrosion and the entry of humidity, as well as increasing the driver and passenger comfort through reduced noise levels. In this process step, all applications are used for sealing and/or dampening.
Seam SealingThe sealing of sheet metal overlaps with liquid sealing material has established itself as a mainstay in modern automotive construction because there is simply no good alternative to obtain the necessary corrosion protection.A variety of different application methods are used in these processes to enable shortest cycle times and a reliable seal. The typical dispensing method is the flatstream application in different widths, which allows a clean and precise application of low-viscosity materials such as PVC.
Underbody SealingThe typical material used in underbody protection of the car is PVC-based, as in the seam sealing process. This category of materials is applied via the airless method for very thin coatings or via flatstream for optimal definition of the application.
Sound DampeningLow-viscous sound and vibration dampening materials are applied in the passenger and engine areas with high process speeds by using flatstream applications. They trump over the former practice of using sound dampening mats in their flexible use, regardless of car model variance.

IntroductionFocus Segments
Automotive Final Assembly
In the process of finalizing the car in the production, several parts are mounted using bonding technology where other joining methods are not suitable.
Glass Bonding/GlazingThe windscreen, sunroof, and fixed windows in a car are bonded to the metal frame. To ensure that no humidity is able to enter over the lifetime of the car, the polyurethane adhesive is applied in a triangular bead shape.Because both the glass screens and the car body are coated, their surfaces have to be prepared with a cleaner/primer application prior to bonding.
Roof StiffeningTo avoid vibrations during the operation, the roof panel is supported through a stiffening mat, which is bonded to the inner side of the roof.
Structural Bonding of Other ComponentsSometimes parts like mirrors and headlights are built with adhesive bonding and also later bonded onto the vehicle.

Automotive Powertrain
In powertrain, typically small components such as the engine and gearbox housings, oil pans, cylinder heads, crankshaft cover plates and timing cases are processed.
Liquid GasketSealants on a silicone (or silicone substitute) basis are applied to the engine housings and gearboxes before their cover is put in place.

IntroductionFocus Segments
Areas of Application
The transportation segment is characterized by its wide range of products. Commercial vehicles, such as agricultural vehicles and trailers, have to withstand continual use and high stresses. To ensure the adhesives, sealants, and sound damping materials used in their manufacturing are able to fulfill these high requirements, SCA offers a range of manual and automatic solutions for precise and flexible dispensing.
End customers in the white goods segment place high demands on the energy efficiency, noise damping qualities, and aesthetics of their appliances. Liquid damping is a new generation of sound deadening materials which can be applied quickly and cleanly using solutions from SCA. Visible seals may also be applied in the final quality, thereby eliminating masking and post-treatment work.

Single or Double Barrel
SCA pumps are available in either single or double barrel configurations. Double barrel models enable convenient replacement of material barrels, without disrupting production. In automatic mode, a double barrel pump switches to a second, full barrel when the first runs empty. In the heated version, when there is 10% material remaining for the active pump, the standby pump starts to heat the second barrel ensuring effortless transition.
Displacement Pumps
Our UP165 displacement pump with pneumatic drive delivers up to 165 cm3 of material per double stroke with a 1:57 pressure ratio (typically air at 1-6 bar and material at 57-342 bar). It is the most commonly used standard SCA pump. For larger delivery volumes and hot epoxies, the UP301 model is recommended. This pump is equipped with an additional heating circuit, which prevents residual material from hardening on the piston rod and significantly extends the service life of the pump’s seals.
Heating
High viscosity materials are usually applied in a heated state. The heating of the material often begins at the barrel pump. Depending on the temperature to be reached, the follower plate, displacement pump and connectors may also be heated.
Pneumatic Pump Control
To control a pump’s functions, a pump control cabinet is typically installed. In cases where only basic pump control is required or where limited floor space is available, a simple pneumatic pump control may be chosen. This control enables basic functionality on a panel mounted on the pump.

Standard Material SupplyPump Control Cabinets
Pump Control cabinets allow for easy management of single or double barrel pumps, providing the most common user functions for operation and maintenance. Control cabinets function as an operation interface that is designed to increase uptime. They provide feedback for both the pump system and the individual pump(s). Control cabinets are a complete solution for handling heated or unheated adhesive materials. The PCU 5000 is designed for unheated adhesives, the HPS 5000 can handle both heated and unheated adhesives.
PCU 5000The pump control unit (PCU) is designed for handling unheated, low to medium viscosity materials. It is required for manual operation of one or two pumps when changing barrels.
The PCU controls pump functions such as stroke monitoring, turning the pump off when a barrel is empty, and automatic transition to a second barrel when the first barrel is empty (with double-barrel pump models). The PCU also has a standard interface to an SYS 6000 or an ASC 5000 adhesive control unit.
Human Machine InterfaceReduce training requirements by having the same interface on HPS and PCU forhandling different materials.
HPS 5000As with the PCU, the heating pump cabinet HPS 5000 is required for pump functionality, but because it is equipped with heating-circuit controllers, the HPS 5000 enables high-viscosity adhesive and sealant materials to be used.
In the base of the unit are pneumatic control elements, which help regulate material transfer and up to six embedded temperature control units. The HPS is fully compatible with the SYS 6000 orASC 5000 system controllers, allowing for automated material delivery and/or the use of two-component bonding systems.

Metering Technology
The meter is a dispensing system’s core component. It regulates the material flow from material supply to the application. The ideal metering technology is chosen, according to the dispensing process and its requirements. Some of the most common technologies which SCA supplies are listed below.
To regulate a material’s pressure is the most basic form of dispensing control. For some applications, like the coating of surfaces via airless spray, this kind of metering is already sufficient.
With different temperature and pressure, a material’s viscosity changes. This means that by regulating an application pressure, the actual material flow may fluctuate. By using a material flow regulation, the flow rate is regulated to be at a constant.
Meters using the continous flow technology are able to dispense an endless stream of material, whereas shot meters dispense a fixed material volume using a pneumatically or electrically driven piston. The constant feedback of flow, pressure and shot volume enables highest application accuracy and bead traceability with this meter type.

Commonly used for materials with a short pot time and when only a fraction of the total
meter volume is dispensed each cycle.
Used when large material volumes are dispensed and the meter is fully emptied
in the process.
Shot Meters are designed according to one of two principles
* Viscosity range is based on reference values for comparison purposes.** Maximum flow is based on technical feasability of an empty meter, true maximum flow depends on individual material attributes.

Pressure Regulators
In manual systems, the pressure regulator is used between the material supply and the applicator. This smoothes the effect of the displacement pump’s pressure peaks and leads to a consistent application pattern.
In automated systems, the pressure regulator is usually used between the material supply and the meter. This enables a consistent filling pressure and reduces the stresses on the metering device’s seals.
A Pressure Regulator is selected based on material viscosity and required meter filling pressure. All regulators offer pressure accuracy across the entire range from 25 to 150/300 bar, thanks to their linear flow characteristics for high and low flow levels.

Gear Meters
Gear meters employ rotating gears which transport the material. SCA offers gear meters especially for the endless dispensing of either high or very low viscosity materials without abrasive properties or vulnerability against shearing.
A common application for the Gear Meter (ZRD) is the endless metering of PU, silicones or butyl in cases where not the highest metering accuracy of electric tandem meters is required. ZRDs are available for SYS 6000 or ASC 5000 controlled dispensing systems.
For the metering of very low viscosity materials such as activator and primer fluids, SCA offers micro gear ring meters to enable highly accurate dispensing of low volumes.

Shot MetersPossible Configuration
Single component (1C)Single-component materials such as silicone sealants, UV-curable acrylates, polyurethanes and epoxies are primarily chosen for their ease of use but have long curing times unless additional energy is used.
Two components (2C)Typically used for their fast-curing nature, two-component materials require specialized metering, mixing and dispensing systems. SCA provides fully automated Two-component dispensing solutions that can be integrated with production lines. Tandem is also available for two-components applications.
Tandem*In some applications, it is necessary to process large quantities of sealing and insulating material with high precision. In order to avoid cycle interruptions during refilling, tandem units are used. The Tandem metering unit consists of two single metering units working side-by-side. Intelligent swap logic ensures that material is applied in a constant flow.
* Only available for ASC 5000 controlled dispensing systems

Automated ApplicatorsIntroduction
For a solution matched to your process needs, automated applicators come in two different variants, differentiated by their mounting type: An independent version mounted on the 6th axis of a robot and a version where the application head is integrated into the dispensing metering unit.
SCA Product CatalogApplicators
61
Applicator mounted onto the robot flange
Applicator mounted to the meter
Automated ApplicatorsDifferent Mounting Options
By using this type of applicator, the meter size does not restrict the flexibility and speed of the robot. Also, by keeping the load to a minimum, smaller and more cost- efficient robots may be used. In addition, the compact design of the applicator increases accessibility during application.
This applicator type is a common choice when the carrying capacity and dynamics of the robot, as well as access to the parts, are not restricted. By reducing the distance between meter and application, the material is dispensed with even higher accuracy. This is especially important in high performance stitch bead applications.

Air Swirl Applicator AK 453 (not pictured) This applicator distributes material in a rotating pattern, using an air stream that is directed through an optimized air swirl nozzle.
Rotary Drive ApplicatorA special applicator solution for applications requiring fast speeds and lower cycle times. Due to its transmission ratio, the Rotary Drive can quickly maneuver around corners with minimal robot movement. Rotary Drive Applicators are often used in processes such as glazing.
E-Swirl Applicator (pictured left)When hot material is applied, air can often not be used to swirl without compromising bead quality. The E-Swirl applicator creates the desired bead pattern through a rotating outlet valve. A special nozzle is not required.

In some applications the dispensing of material in a swirl pattern delivers exceptional value to the production. Benefits include faster robot speeds even around tight corners through quick bead adjustment and high tolerances in working distance. These applicators are especially popular for structural bonding in hem flange areas.
The standard way to swirl material is through directing streams of air around the nozzle. But some materials have to be applied heated, and here the air swirl would cool the material down too much. In cases such as these, an electric swirl applicator is recommended. It rotates the nozzle through a highly dynamic and silent electric motor.

Vision System
SCA Compact Cell and Vision Systemhttp://youtu.be/48R1DE9OioA
Key Benefits
Reduced Quality CostsBecause the Vision System is integrated into the application head, quality issues are immediately detected. Follow-up costs such as rework or scrap production are minimized.
High Productivity LevelsThe Vision System is an inline process monitoring system and hence does not require additional cycle time. High image processing frequency allows highest robot speeds. To avoid rework-time, the system provides an automatic bead repair functionality so quality issues can be fixed where they appear.
Structural bonding is usually used when high tensile strength and rigidity are required, which is very common in safety critical applications. Joints can be classified as safety critical if failure of the bonding might be dangerous for the product user. To monitor safety critical applications and meet the strictest quality standards without sacrificing productivity, SCA has introduced the Vision System, delivering superior quality control.
Lowest Total Cost of OwnershipThere is no need for an extra quality station in the production line as the Vision System is mounted on the application head. SCA provides a fully integrated solution that reduces the number of cabinets needed. In addition, floor space is saved.
Extremely Easy to UseTeach-in functionalities support machine operators and reduce start-up time. To make the Vision System easy to use, configurable parameters have been programmed in an intuitive manner.

Refill station
In some applications, the dispensing process is not the one critical to the cycle time. However, material hoses may obstruct the robot movement or are under a lot of stress during complicated movements. In this case, the refill station serves as an alternative material supply for a robot mounted shot meter. After each dispensing cycle, the robot places the meter on the refill station which feeds the material with pump pressure.
Key Benefits
Maximized accessibilityAvoiding robot mounted hoses which may limit its movement allows the robot to perform in flexible movement patterns and angles. This allows for a flexible use of the robot even for hard to reach applications.
No hose wearThe eliminated need for material hoses along the robot reduces the amount of moved parts. Material hoses which are used in the system show a longer life time due to not being in constant movement.

Refill station Docking Station
When production volumes are low, an industrial robot may be used to perform several tasks in one station. In the phases where the robot works with other tools, the shot meter is stored and filled in the SCA Docking Station.
SCA Docking Stations are available for SYS and ASC controlled dispensings systems and with common robot clutch systems like Walther, Stäubli, RSP and others.
Key Benefits
Maximized robot utilizationA single robot is able to perform different tasks in one station. This reduces the number of robots needed and thus returning a higher return on the investment in automation tech-nology.
No hose wearAs in the case of the Refill Station, the Docking Station no longer requires material hoses to be installed along the robot. Without constant movement, their service intervals are easily extended.
