Parks make life better!Growing up in Minnesota, I always looked forward to the timeeach year when the small green shoots of grass would beginpoking through the remaining patches of snow—the sure signthat spring had nearly arrived. This meant, of course, that mylife started moving from mostly indoors near the fireplace to theout-of-doors. And where were my favorite places to go? Mostdefinitely they were the city parks and neighborhood schoolfields where my friends and I rode our bikes, played baseballand explored the many creeks and wooded areas.

It seems my experience enjoying local parks is not unlike my(now) fellow Californians who, in a recent research studyconducted by the California Park and Recreation Society, demonstrated that virtually every California household hadvisited a park during the last year. Forty-two percent ofrespondents reported visiting a park several times a week. Myestimate of the number of Danville residents who are frequentusers of the Town’s parks, trails and community facilities wouldbe—though admittedly unscientific—at least that percentage or higher.

To help residents more easily find the location of park andfacility amenities that meet their needs or interests, the listingnear the end of the Town’s quarterly Activity Guide has beenreorganized. The facility amenity you may wish to visit or utilizeis now listed on the left side of the chart with each site thatoffers that particular feature identified by the symbol in thevertical columns. In addition, the Town’s new updated websitehas more information than ever before about Danville’s parksand community facilities and the various activities held there.

This spring there are innumerable things to do both indoors andoutdoors in Danville, and the Activity Guide you are reading orviewing right now is chock full of programs, classes and eventsfor all ages. The special bonus in this edition is the SummerCamp brochure insert and summer aquatics information sofamilies can plan ahead to the time when school will be out andthere’s more free time to explore, discover and learn new things. As always, if you have an idea for a new program or service that you think Danville residents would enjoy and benefit from, please feel free to contact any of the Recreation Services stafflisted on this page. And don’t forget to get out and enjoy the parks!

The Light Fantastic: Irish Stained Glass ArtJanuary 30–March 28, 2010The Light Fantastic represents the work of 12 leadingcontemporary Irish glass artists and highlights theimportance of traditional stained, painted, and etchedglass in Ireland. Initially on view at the Crafts Councilof Ireland, this exhibition is the first to feature secular,free-standing, portable glass panels.

Careful observation of each piece reveals how differentlyeach artist has treated the glass. Methods for surfacetreatments range from painted to barely marked, stippled, enameled, sandblasted, or acid-etched. Theworks show how important the very nature of eachpiece of glass is in transmitting the images and conceptseach designer suggests. Features such as tiny air bubbles,

streaks, wisps of silver wire, brush strokes, and themodulation of tones and depthscan all affect the perception of theinner world conjured before us.

Mount Diablo: Original WorksApril 10–June 6, 2010The magnificent landscape of Mount Diablo hasinspired artists for generations. Greg Piatt, co-curator ofthe Summit Gallery at Mount Diablo State Park, curatesa wonderful celebration of this local landmark. Theshow features completely original work, includingseveral pieces created specifically for this exhibit.Through the use of oils, watercolors, photographs, andtextiles, these artists pay tribute to the mountain thatcharacterizes our Valley and our community.
