About Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay

Esplanade is Singapore’s national performing arts centre and one of the busiest arts centres in the world. Since its opening in 2002, the centre has presented more than 31,000 performances, drawing an audience of 22 million patrons and 84 million visitors. This architectural icon, with its distinctive twin shells, houses world-class performance spaces complemented by a comprehensive range of professional support services. Its two main venues are the 1,600-seat Concert Hall and a Theatre with a capacity of 2,000. In March 2014, Esplanade’s Concert Hall was listed as one of the “world’s 15 most beautiful concert halls” by Hamburg-based building data company Emporis.

Esplanade’s vision is to be a performing arts centre for everyone and it seeks to enrich the lives of its community through the arts. The centre’s programming is guided by its mission – to entertain, engage, educate and inspire. Its year-long arts calendar of about 3,000 performances presented by Esplanade, its collaboration partners and hirers cater to diverse audiences in Singapore and span different cultures, languages and genres including dance, music, theatre, visual arts and more. More than 70% of the shows that take place each year at the centre are non-ticketed. In May 2015, Esplanade was chosen as one of SG Heart Map’s 50 special places.

Esplanade regularly presents world-renowned companies and artists that attract international attention and add to Singapore’s cultural vibrancy. The centre is also a popular performance home for arts groups and commercial presenters who hire its venues to stage a wide range of programmes. These carefully curated presentations complement Esplanade’s own diverse offerings for audiences.

Esplanade works in close partnership with local, regional and international artists to develop artistic capabilities, push artistic boundaries and engage audiences. The centre supports the creation of artistic content and develops technical capabilities for the industry nationally.

Welcome to Moonfest – A Mid-Autumn Celebration !

The Mid-Autumn Festival is a time of festive joy and harmony when friends and loved ones get together to indulge in tasty mooncakes and admire the full moon. Here at Esplanade, we celebrate this festive occasion with our annual traditional Chinese arts festival. Moonfest aims to keep Chinese traditional arts alive, especially for the younger generation, to spur their interest in these beautiful art forms.

More and more people in Singapore are taking the initiative to get involved with traditional arts. We see many parents recognising the importance of exposing their young ones to cultural traditions that connect with their roots or teach them to appreciate the different cultures in our multicultural society. At the same time, artists are working hard and adopting surprising and innovative ways to promote and develop the traditional arts.

At Moonfest, we bring these curious arts-goers and artists together through quality traditional arts presentations for everyone to enjoy and appreciate. Be it through our various ticketed shows or our extensive line-up of free performances and activities, there is something for you to enjoy with your family and friends. Don’t forget to go on our annual Lantern Walkabout on 10 Sep, or experience the grandeur of street opera at our special Moonfest Chinese Opera Stage along the waterfront over the weekend.

In 1987, the Shanghai Yue Opera House performed 16 sold-out shows in Singapore and stirred up a wave of excitement over Yue Opera. After nearly 30 years, we are back to present our latest historical opera Couple Wings together with other classic Yue Opera excerpts at the Esplanade’s Moonfest – A Mid-Autumn Celebration. Our involvement at this festival serves both as a showcase of Shanghai Yue Opera House’s efforts in preserving and breathing new life into this traditional art form, as well as a tribute to the support and love of the Singapore audience towards us over all these years. We also treasure the opportunity to interact with arts organisations from around the world at the festival. Shanghai Yue Opera House is renowned for our distinctive schools of operatic singing styles, our diverse and exciting repertoire, and our rich and colourful artistic presentations. Not only are we deeply rooted in tradition, we are also relentless in our drive to innovate. The carefully selected opera excerpts have all retained the allure and timeless beauty of the outstanding traditional opera repertoires. For its cultural importance and aesthetic depth, our new production Couple Wings has been praised by critics as “an outstanding new take on the love between an ideal couple by an all-female Yue Opera troupe”. Shanghai Yue Opera House was founded in 1955, with the aim to promote Yue Opera through “progressive innovation while being rooted in tradition”. Its founding president was the famous performing artiste Yuan Xuefen. Over the past 60 years, not only is the Opera House renowned in the Chinese opera circle for its efforts in preserving classic repertoires, it has created and adapted more than 400 period, historical and contemporary works, of which its The Butterfly Lovers, The Story of the West Chamber, A Dream of Red Mansions and Xiang Lin’s Wife have all been recognised as definitive works of the Yue Opera. Thanks to its fertile cultural and ethnic background, the Opera House has nurtured generation after generations of outstanding artists, including veteran artistes Yuan Xuefen, Fan Ruijuan, Xu Yulan, Wang Wenjuan, Lu Ruiying, Jin Caifeng, Zhou Baokui, directors Wu Chen and Huang Sha, composer Gu Zhenxia, stage designer Su Shifeng, as well as the present generation of artists that include Qian Huili, Shan Yangping, Fang Yafen and Wang Zhiping. Over the years, the Opera House has nurtured many operatic talents, among whom more than 20 have received various prestigious national arts awards, including the Wen Hua Award for Performance given by the Chinese Culture Ministry, the Chinese Drama Plum Blossom Award, Best Actor Award at the China Drama Festival and Shanghai White Magnolia Award for Theatrical Performing Arts. Its new adaptation of A Dream of Red Mansions tailored for the Shanghai Grand Theatre was hailed as ‘an iconic work that exhibits the charms of the Shanghai culture’; its new works Stage Sisters and The Family won the 9th and 11th Wen Hua Award for New Repertoire respectively, while its Jade Love and Zhao’s Orphan won the Yue Opera Festival Gold Awards, its Beauty Yu won the Repertoire Award and Deep into Autumn won the Outstanding Repertoire Award at the 10th and 12th China Theatre Festival respectively, Dream of Red Mansions was given the Culture Ministry’s Outstanding Preservable Repertoire Award, and its Empresses in the Palace won the Outstanding Repertoire Award at the 3rd China Yue Opera Festival. Couple Wings won the 4th National Folk Opera Showcase – Outstanding Repertoire Award. Based in Shanghai, the Opera House performs actively around China, and overseas to countries and territories like Japan, France, Thailand, Singapore, the United States, Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Canada, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. In recent years, the Opera House has launched its influential New Century Shanghai Yue Opera National Tour, of which its Shanghai Yue Opera Goes West and Celebrating 100 Years of Yue Opera Tour were ranked first at the 3rd Top Ten Performances and Events Award, and received the Gold Award for Best Show Production and Promotion at the 5th Top Ten Performances and Events Award.

GETTING TO KNOW YUE OPERA

The Yue Opera is one of the five main types of traditional opera in China. It has been popular around the Zhejiang region since the time of Emperor Guangxu during the Qing dynasty. Over the past century, it has developed into the second most popular opera genre after the Peking Opera, and is also the most widely circulated and influential opera. When it first started, Yue Opera was performed by an all-male cast. As time went by, it evolved into an all-female cast. After the founding of People’s Republic of China, male and female actors started sharing the stage, but the art form still retains the aestheticism and lyricism that have come to characterize the all-female Yue Opera troupe. With its focus on emotive performances, refreshing and easily understandable lyrics, beautiful and elegant melodies, it is small wonder that the Yue Opera is well-loved by the general public. At the same time, the Yue Opera is adaptable enough to incorporate the essences of Peking and Kun Operas as well as contemporary theatre to reinvent itself. By upholding tradition and innovating constantly, Yue Opera has evolved into a popular art form with a unique style of performance. When Yue Opera spread to Shanghai in the 1930s, it had to make drastic changes to its playwriting, directing and acting in order to adapt to the bustling cosmopolitan atmosphere of the coastal city. A representative work from this era is Xiang Lin’s Wife. Since the advent of a large number of outstanding works during the late 1950s to the mid-1960s, including A Dream of Red Mansions and The Butterfly Lovers, the Yue Opera’s status in the Chinese traditional operatic arts scene has been on an unrelenting rise. This is evident from the fact that the motion picture version of the famous Yue Opera A Dream of Red Mansions has been screened continuously from 1962 till now. The movie can truly be described as a landmark work in the history of Yue Opera and even the drama theatre scene in China. Over the years, countless Yue Opera performing artistes famed for their unique singing styles have graced the stage, some of whom had even founded their own schools of singing style, such as Yuan Xuefen, Fan Ruijuan, Fu Quanxiang, Xu Yulan, Wang Wenjuan, Zhang Guifeng, Xu Tianhong, Wu Xiaolou, Lu Jinhua, Lu Ruiying, Jin Caifeng and Zhou Baokui. Many others then built upon their roots, such as Qian Huili, Shan Yangping, Zhan Ruihong, Fang Yafen and Wang Zhiping.

COUPLE WINGS

The late Tang dynasty’s imperial court is split into different factions, with a bitter rivalry between the camps of Niu Sengru and Li Deyu.

One day, the scholar Li Shangyin encounters Wang Yunyan amidst the apricot blossoms, and they fall in love at first sight. However, Li Shangyin’s mentor is a supporter of Niu Sengru, while Wang Yunyan’s father supports Li Deyu. Caught in a political divide, the lovers part with great regret.

A new emperor ascends the throne, and the camp of Niu Sengru comes into power. Linghu Tao, son of Li Shangyin’s mentor and also his best friend, wants Li to frame Wang Yunyan’s father, who is the commander of the military forces. Unwilling to betray his own conscience, Li Shangyin flatly rejects Linghu Tao.

Unable to forget Li Shangyin, Wang Yunyan returns to the apricot blossoms to reminisce their fateful meeting. There, she runs into Li Shangyin, but before they can express their feelings for each other, news arrives that the emperor has raided Wang Yunyan’s residence and sentenced her family to death.

In a bid to save her family, Li Shangyin goes to see Linghu Tao, now the prime minister, and pleads with him. However, due to their irreconcilable political views, they bitterly renounce their friendship.

Twenty years on, Li Shangyin, now a famous poet, pays respects at his late mentor’s tomb. He runs into Linghu Tao, who has fallen from grace and is now an exile. They reminisce over their past, and they cannot help but lament what is lost.

Performed in Mandarin, with English and Chinese surtitles.(Approximately 2hrs 45mins, including 20min intermission.)

Li Li PlaywrightLi Li is a National Class One Playwright. She has created over thirty stage and screen plays that have been produced and performed, including Yue Operas Bloodshed in the Palace, Everlasting Nemesis of Love Empresses in the Palace, and Couple Wings; Peking Operas Feng Yi Lan and Success or Failure of Xiao He; Shanghai Operas Flower of the Drug Enforcement Agency, Rainbow in the East and Woman Porter; and various Huai, Bai, Yunnan and Guilin Operas as well as television dramas. She is a recipient of various national and local prizes and awards.

Lu Ang DirectorLu Ang is the dean of the Department of Directing, professor, lecturer and doctorate mentor at the Shanghai Theatre Academy, and vice chairman of the Shanghai Theatre Association. He is recognised as an “Outstanding Director of the New Century” of Chinese theatre, an “Outstanding Drama Theatre Practitioner” by the Ministry of Culture, a recipient of the Huo Ying Dong Education Fund and the Outstanding Talents of the New Century Support Program of the Ministry of Education, and a “National-level Candidate of the Million Talents Project” initiated by the Ministry of Personnel, He was awarded the “Outstanding Artistic Talent Special Grand Prix” and “Dawn Scholar” by the Shanghai City, and is also a recipient of the inaugural Dawn Award. He is also a senior visiting scholar at the American Cultural Centre, and senior researcher of University of Leeds.

Lu has received numerous awards during his illustrious career. He received the Wen Hua Grand Prix and Wen Hua Award seven times in a row, the Wen Hua Directors’ Award for four times, Best Works Award of the Publicity Department of the CCCPC and Outstanding Director’s Award at the China Drama Festival six times, and the China Theatre Arts Golden Lion Award for Directing. To date, he has directed more than 60 theatrical productions in and beyond China. His major directorial works include Liyuan Operas Dong and Li and Story of a Virtuous Woman; Peking Operas Rui Fuxiang, Fifteen Strings of Copper Coins and General Koxinga (in Taiwan); Shandong Operas Mending the Sky and Coming Home; Yu Opera The Red Fruit Ripens and At the Qingfeng Pavilion; Kun Opera Sima Xiangru; Guilin Opera The Grand Scholar Returns Home; Flower Lantern musical Flowing River; Yue Operas Stage Sisters, Han Feizi and My Aunt My Mum; Zhuang Operas Love Song from Heaven and Go Hunting; Yunnan Opera The Censor on a Thin Horse; Longjiang Opera Legends of Mulan; Shanghai Operas Charm of Woman, Girl Luxiang; experimental theatre productions Love and Hate and King Oedipus; Western Opera Zhao’s Orphan; and dramas When Boat Passes Three Gorges, Buddha Ridge, Come Back, Rashomon, The Cruel Game of Youth and Romeo and Juliet (in UK). His published theory works on directing include Comparison and Integration of Eastern and Western Theatre, Expatiation of Directors and Creation of Directors. He was also the editor of the book series International Masterclass on Directing.

Ru Jinshan ComposerRu Jinshan is a National Class One composer. He has received many composition awards at the China Drama Festival, as well as the 11th Wen Hua Award for Music Composition in 2004 awarded by the Ministry of Culture.

His major works include: Yong Opera Pawning My Wife Away, Huai Opera television series Jing Long and Fu You, Shanghai Operas Dream Comes True Today, Peers in Hardship and The Family, Yue Operas Blue Gown Red Robe, Deep into Autumn and Love in the Wind and Snow, Wuxi Operas The Pearl Pagoda and The Story of the Two Springs.

Chen Jun Vocal DesignerChen Jun is a member of the Shanghai Theatre Association and Shanghai Xiqu Music Society. He explores new singing styles for Zhao Zhigang, Qian Huili, Fang Yahui and Zhang Ruihong, and is well regarded by actors, professionals and the audience. He had won prizes at the National Chinese Opera-Song Writing Competition organised by Shanghai Television for three consecutive years.

His compositions and singing style design works include He Wenxiu, Top Scholar becomes a Watchman, Love in a Mental Asylum, Lu Wenlong, Hamlet,, Prince of the Desert, Yang Naiwu, Genuine and Fake Prince Consorts, A Marriage of Laughter and Tears, The Story of the Jade Hairpin, A Dream of Red Mansions television serial, Storm in Daguanyuan, Love in the Wind and Snow, a new version of A Dream of Red Mansions (Zhao Fang version), Butterfly Dream, Early Spring in February, Mei Long Town, The Bombax Blossom, Saving a Girl from a Life of Prostitution, The First Intimate Contact, Spring in Isolation, new Yue Opera The Family, Entanglement of Love, The Commoner Prime Minister, Yue Opera television series The Legend of the Butterfly, Concubine Xiang and Emperor Qianlong and Two Generations of Entanglement. His work Mei Long Town was awarded the Outstanding Vocal Design Award at the 7th China Drama Festival.

Hu Zuo Set DesignerHu Zuo is the vice dean and vice secretary of the Department of Stage Design, Head of Department of Stage Design Teaching and Research Section, assistant professor and mentor of Master’s degree students at the Shanghai Theatre Academy.

Hu has been doing stage designing and teaching for many years. His design works include over a hundred stage productions in and beyond China, and across all stage art genres such as theatre, Chinese operas, Western operas, dance theatres, musicals and music and dance gala concerts. His major works include: theatre work Big Love (in the US), Western opera Xiao Er Hei’s Marriage, Peking Operas Rui Fuxiang and General Tao, Guilin opera Seven Step Poem, Yue Operas Lamentations of Confucius, Ban Zhao and The Story of the Jade Hairpin, Chu Opera Life during the Xin Hai years, and the Hainan opera The Centenarian Tree. He received awards for his stage designs at the 8th China Theatre Arts Golden Lion Awards, 14th Wen Hua Awards, and the 2nd China Stage Design Exhibition. His creations have twice been selected for the Top Ten Outstanding Works of the China Stage Arts Outstanding Works. He received the China Arts Festival Wen Hua Award five times, the Wen Hua Outstanding Repertoire Award, China Drama Festival Outstanding Repertoire Award three times, Chinese Opera Society Award, China Peking Opera Festival Gold Award, and Huang Mei Opera Festival Gold Award.

Meng Qin Lighting DesignerMeng Qin is a National Class One Lighting Designer, a council member of the China Institute of Stage Design, and an adjunct professor at the Department of Art Design of the Beijing Dance Academy. His lighting works for dance theatre Red Sorghum, Peking Opera Rui Fuxiang, and Lu Opera The New Story of Li Er Sao won the prestigious Wen Hua Award, and his work for the dance theatre Memory of the Grasslands and Tibetan Opera Golden Homeland won the Best Lighting Design Award at the 4th National Ethnic Minority Showcase. He was also the lighting designer of the opening ceremony of the 26th Universiade held in Shenzhen.

Zhang Yumei Costume and Image DesignerZhang Yumei is a National Class One stage art designer, a Representative Inheritor of Shanghai Intangible Cultural Heritage (Yue Opera), and Shanghai Drama Association council member. She graduated from the China Textile University with a major in Fashion Design. She won the Outstanding Costume Design Award and Outstanding Image Design Award at the 7th Chinese Drama Festival.

Her major works include: Yue Operas He Wenxiu, Vagabond, Murder in the Emperor’s Harem, Love in the Wind and Snow, Mei Long Town, Entanglement of Love, The Bombax Blossom, new rendition of A Dream of Red Mansions, The Butterfly Lovers (2005), new rendition of The Story of the West Chamber, Moon over the Lotus Lake, The Story of the Jade Hairpin, Han Feizi, Deep into Autumn, Painted Skin, Empresses in the Palace (Part I); Cantonese Operas Zhang Yu Boils the Sea, Peach Blossom Fan; Kun Opera Fifteen Strings

Zhou Zhigang Assistant DirectorZhou Zhigang was the second batch of Kun Opera students to graduate from the Shanghai School of Operatic Arts in 1966, and was under the tutelage of Kun Opera masters Yu Zhenfei and Shen Chuanzhi. He is a well-known director and famous Kun Opera male lead actor. With a strong operatic foundation and an industrious spirit, Zhou has become a very versatile actor who is equally comfortable playing the aspiring student (jin sheng), court official (guan sheng), poor man (qiong sheng) and military officer (zhi wei sheng). Formerly a director and male lead actor with the Shanghai Kun Opera Troupe, Zhou is currently the Chairman (legal representative) of the Shanghai International Kun Opera Society. He is named a Representative Inheritor of Shanghai Intangible Cultural Heritage (Kun Opera) in 2010, appointed as a council member of the China Kun Opera Guqin Society in Oct 2011, Artistic Director of the Taipei Kun Opera Troupe and lectures on the art of Kun Opera at the Shanghai School of Operatic Arts, a subsidiary of the Shanghai Theatre Academy.

Apart from performing, Zhou is actively engaged in preserving and promoting Kun Opera for the past four decades, teaching and directing various Kun Opera troupes in Shanghai, Beijing, Yongjia and Hunan. He is also involved in other opera genres, such as the Peking Opera, Huai Opera, Yue Opera and Yu Opera, all of which are highly regarded. Since 1994, Zhou has been invited more than 30 times to Taiwan to teach the art of the Kun Opera and direct performances at the National Taiwan University of the Arts, Kun Opera Preservation and Training Program, Taipei Kun Opera Troupe, Chinese Opera and Literature Promotion Association, Shuimo Kun Opera Troupe, Taiwan Kun Opera Troupe and other professional and amateur opera groups. While there, he conducted public lectures to promote Chinese Opera, including Kun Opera, through interactions on- and off-stage. These lectures were well received and he became famous among the Taiwanese people. By staying true to his mission of preserving and promoting Kun Opera, he has made an indelible contribution to cross-strait cultural exchanges.

He was invited by the Gu Tiehua Kun Opera Promotion Foundation to record the DVD series A Compilation of Chinese Kun Opera Classics (consisting of over 50 traditional opera extracts); while in Taiwan, he recorded a set of Kun Opera karaoke discs (13 in total) as well as Kun Opera classics Listen to the Bell, Sweeping up Fallen Petals, Thrice Drunken and Zhang Sheng Visits the Temple.

OF BEAUTY AND ELEGANCE: YUE OPERA EXCERPTS

Barging into the Palace from The Arrogant PrincessHuang Hui as Guo AiSheng Shuyang as Princess Shengping

The excerpt Barging into the Palace is the signature episode in the traditional Yue Opera production The Arrogant Princess. The story centres around the arrogant and spoilt Princess Shengping and her husband Guo Ai, son of the Prince of Fenyang. On the 80th birthday of the Prince of Fenyang, Princess Shengping fails to attend the celebration, reasoning that since she is the daughter of the Tang Emperor Daizong, she outranks the Prince of Fenyang and thus it is not necessary for her to pay her respects to her father-in-law. Enraged by her imperiousness, Guo storms into the imperial palace and quarrels with the Princess, and ends up slapping her. The outraged Princess brings the matter before the Emperor and asks him to punish Guo. This opera is a lighthearted portraiture of a young couple’s squabble that arises from the impetuousness of Guo Ai and the arrogance of the Princess.

Fooling The Bully is an entertaining episode from the Yue Opera classic comedy Forcible Marriage. In the story, Zhou Wenbin, a talented scholar from Jiangnan, dresses up as a lady in order to get near Wang Xiu Ying, the lady whom he has fallen in love with. Wang’s brother, the local bully Wang Tianbao (also known as Tiger Wang), is fooled by Zhou’s disguise and he proceeds to abduct “her” home and tries to force “her” to marry him that very night, only to be made a fool by the quick-thinking Zhou. The impeccable comic timing of the actors and the pace at which the story unfolds make this humorous excerpt all the more entertaining.

At the Library from Chasing the Fish Spirit Qian Huili as Zhang ZhenWang Zhiping as Carp Fairy

At the Library is a beautiful segment from the romantic mythical story Chasing the Fish Spirit. In the story, Zhang Zhen had fallen on hard times when his parents passed away and he lost his family wealth. In desperation, he sought the help of Prime Minister Jin, the father of his fiancé Mudan. The Prime Minister was reluctant to accept Zhang in his current state, so he gave the excuse that it was his family tradition not to recognise a son-in-law unless he has become a successful imperial scholar, and thus sent Zhang to live and study in a thatched hut by the Bi Bo Lake. The earnestness that Zhang put into his study touched the Carp Fairy residing in the Bi Bo Lake, and she transformed into his fiancé Mudan to be with him.

Seeking the Truth from Ungrateful Man Wang Jie as Jiao GuiyingZhang Qingqing as Judge of the DeadZhao Ting & Chen Qiongqiong as Ghost Spirits

The Yue Opera classic production Ungrateful Man tells of the tragedy of a famous courtesan Jiao Guiying who hung herself at the Temple of the Sea God after she discovers that her husband Wang Kui has forsaken her. Jiao’s ghost sets out to test Wang regarding his love for her, but Wang is set on forsaking Jiao for a powerful court official’s daughter. In vengeful anger, Jiao’s ghost drags Wang to Hell. In this excerpt Seeking the Truth, the Sea God takes pity on Jiao, and sends the Judge of the Dead to escort her ghost to confront Wang at the imperial capital. The dance movement of this excerpt is inspired by the artistic expression of Sichuan Operas. We see Jiao Guiying singing while dancing with four-foot long sleeves, which emphasises the otherworldly image of the beautiful protagonist.

This is another excerpt from Ungrateful Man. The ghost of Jiao Guiying has arrived at the new house of her unfaithful husband Wang Kui and his new wife. Jiao still treasures her relationship with Wang, and decides to test his love for her. However, Wang expresses that he no longer loves Jiao. Utterly heartbroken, the vengeful Jiao drags Wang to Hell alive. Through the precise pacing of the story and intricate performance, this excerpt is a gripping exposition on the fidelity of a ghost contrasting with the unfaithfulness of a human.

Rendezvous at the Balcony from Butterfly Lovers Qian Huili as Liang ShanboWang Zhiping as Zhu Yingtai

The Butterfly Lovers is one of the four pillars of Yue Opera repertoire. The story tells of the true love between Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai that was met with the objection of Zhu’s father, and how they eventually died for their love and transformed into butterflies to live together forever. Rendezvous at the Balcony is a touching episode from The Butterfly Lovers. Liang has come to ask for Zhu’s hand in marriage, only to discover that she has been forced by her father to be wedded to Ma Wencai. When the two lovers meet at the balcony, they profess their undying love for each other and pledge to be together even in death before parting ways sadly. This excerpt is unfailingly moving, with yearning and melancholy intertwined so intricately that it will draw you into the tragedy and leave you with lingering regret and compassion for the ill-fated couple.

She is a council member of the China Theatre Association, vice chairman of the Shanghai Theatre Association, and a Representative Inheritor of Shanghai Intangible Cultural Heritage. She graduated from the Shaoxing County Operatic Art Vocational School, and was under the tutelage of Yue Opera performing artiste Fu Quanxiang and famous actors Chen Fei and Chen Ying.

Her major works include The Butterfly Lovers, The Legend of Li Wa, Ungrateful Man, Love Brought Together by the Mountains and Rivers, Empresses in the Palace, Qin Keqing Hangs Herself, Lan Ke Mountain – Wishful Dreaming, Qingwen Repairs Baoyu’s Feather Coat, Earthly Fate, Death of Tang Emperor Tai Zong and Principal Consort Yang Yuhuan.

She held a solo Yue Opera concert under the Yue Opera Young Talents series in April 2008, and won the Young Soloist Performance Award. 上海越剧院赴新加坡演出团团长的话

1987年,上海越剧院赴新加坡连演16场,盛况空前,掀起了一股越剧风潮。

时隔近30年,我院再次踏上新加坡的土地,这回携带了新编历史故事剧《双飞翼》和经典传统折子戏在艺满中秋上演出。此举既是展示上海越剧院在传承、创新方面的艺术成果,也是回报新加坡观众多年来对我院的热切关注与期盼,更借机与世界各地的艺术团体共同交流。

上海越剧院素以流派特色浓郁、剧目丰富多彩、艺术风格鲜明著称。越剧院不仅拥有扎实的传统根基,也具有强大的创新能力。本次献演的精品折子戏,原汁原味保留了优秀传统剧目意蕴隽永的艺术魅力。而新编越剧《双飞翼》,则以其文化品格与美学内涵被评论界誉为“对女子越剧开拓新才子佳人创作之路进行了卓有成效的探索”。

上海越剧院

上海越剧院创建于1955年,以“立足传统,稳健创新”为宗旨,第一任院长为著名表演艺术家袁雪芬。

60年漫长的岁月里,剧院不仅以传承经典剧码著称于中国戏曲界,还极力创作改编并移植了400余部古装剧、历史剧和现代剧,其中《梁祝》、《红楼梦》、《西厢记》和《祥林嫂》被推举为剧种的代表剧目。因着丰实的民族文化沃土,培养出一代又一代优秀的编创人员与演员,包括老一辈的表演艺术家袁雪芬、范瑞娟、傅全香、徐玉兰、王文娟、张桂凤、徐天红、吴小楼、陆锦花、吕瑞英、金采风、周宝奎;编剧徐进,导演吴琛、黄沙,作曲顾振遐,和舞台美术设计苏石风等,以及当代表演艺术家,如钱惠丽、单仰萍、章瑞虹、方亚芬、王志萍等。

上海越剧院秉持以浓郁的流派特色、鲜明的艺术风格为根本,矢志维护延续越剧的隽永之美;为此,更是致力于专业人员的培养,相继开设舞台美术和音乐作曲训练班,使后辈人才不断,支撑起越剧得以永续发展的基石。

多年来,人才辈出的上海越剧院,共有20多人荣获中国文化部文华表演奖、中国戏剧梅花奖、中国戏剧节最佳演员奖、上海戏剧表演艺术白玉兰奖等等。而为上海大剧院量身定制的新版《红楼梦》被推举为“展示上海文化风采的标志之作”、 《舞台姐妹》和《家》荣获第九和第十一届文华新剧目奖、《梅龙镇》荣获第七届中国戏剧节优秀剧目奖、《玉卿嫂》和《赵氏孤儿》荣获中国越剧艺术节金奖、《虞美人》和《秋色渐浓》荣获中国戏剧节第十届剧目奖和第十二届优秀剧目奖、《红楼梦》获文化部第二届优秀保留剧目大奖、《甄嬛》荣获第三届中国越剧节优秀剧目奖,此番在艺满中秋演出的大戏《双飞翼》,则荣获第四届全国地方戏剧优秀剧目展演奖。

越剧院立足于上海,活跃于江浙,并拓展于海外。曾先后到访日本、法国、泰国、新加坡、美国、德国、比利时、卢森堡、荷兰、加拿大,以及港澳台等地巡演,为越剧艺术在海外开拓一片新天地,成就多一批观众。近年来,越剧院推出“新世纪上海越剧全国行”影响颇大,其中“上海越剧西部行”和“纪念越剧百年系列巡演”分别被评为中国十大演出盛事奖的第三届榜首和第五届最佳演出制作推广金奖。

越剧知一二

越剧是中国五大戏曲剧种之一,自清光绪年间就开始流传于浙江一带,经过百年锤炼,目前已发展成为继京剧之后的第二大戏曲剧种,同时也是流传最广、影响最大的地方剧种。

越剧最初为男班,后演变为全女班。建国后逐渐加入男女合演,但女子越剧所具有的唯美与抒情仍为其主要特质,并着重于情感的表现,唱词清新易明,旋律优美典雅,深受观众的喜爱。与此同时,越剧博采京昆和现代话剧的艺术精华,在传承与创新下,逐步建立起自己特有的表演风格。

20世纪30年代,越剧进入上海后,为了适应繁华大都会的氛围,在编、导、演方面有了大幅度的提升,代表剧目是《祥林嫂》。50年代中后期到60年代中期,随着《红楼梦》和《梁祝》等大批优秀剧目的问世,越剧在中国传统戏曲艺术中的地位日趋重要,这一点单从1962年热演不辍的越剧电影《红楼梦》(编剧徐进,导演岑范)可见一斑,电影可谓为中国越剧乃至戏剧史上的里程碑作品。

这些年来,以别具一格的唱腔表演见著的越剧表演艺术家不计其数,有自创流派者,如老一辈表演艺术家袁雪芬、范瑞娟、傅全香、徐玉兰、王文娟、张桂凤、徐天红、吴小楼、陆锦花、吕瑞英、金采风、周宝奎;她们的传人有钱惠丽、单仰萍、章瑞虹、方亚芬、王志萍等。

晚唐时期,朝中派系林立,党争不断,其中以牛李两党为最。

这年春天,高中进士的李商隐在杏花林中偶遇王茂元之女王云雁,两人一见钟情。然而李商隐为牛党令狐楚的门生,王云雁乃李党眷属,党争之中,难容两人恋情。不忍辜负师恩的李商隐忍痛与王云雁分开。

新帝登位,牛党得势,干将令狐绹要其师弟李商隐起草奏章诬陷手握兵权的王茂元。李商隐不愿背弃良知,断然拒绝,挥袖而去。

王云雁相思日深,来到杏花林回忆旧情,巧与李商隐重逢。两人互诉别后情怀之际,王家侍女来报,王府突遭朝廷抄封,全家皆被打入死牢......王李再次痛别而去。

为了王家,李商隐重返令狐府,向已当上宰相的师兄令狐绹求情。最终却因两人已道不同而割袍断义。

二十年后,诗誉满天下的李商隐在恩师墓前,巧遇当时已是一无所有还被流放西南的令狐绹。两人见面,为着生命中所发生的一切不由得唏嘘感慨......

卢昂 导演上海戏剧学院导演系主任、博士、教授,博士生导师,上海戏剧家协会副主席、中国戏剧“新世纪杰出导演”,中国文化部“优秀话剧艺术工作者”霍英东教育基金和教育部“新世纪优秀人才支持计划”获得者、中国国家人事部“新世纪百千万人才工程国家级人选”、获颁上海市“优秀艺术人才特别大奖”、上海市“曙光学者”的首届“曙光奖”,同时也是美国亚洲文化基金会资深访问学者,英国利兹大学自身研究学者。

陈钧 唱腔设计上海戏剧家协会会员,上海戏曲音乐学会会员。为赵志刚、钱惠丽、方亚芬、章瑞虹等表演艺术家新流派唱腔的形成作探索,受到演员、专家和观众的好评。此外,他曾连续三年获上海电视台主办的全国戏歌作品奖(戏歌就是把戏曲唱腔和通俗歌曲结合起来的一种艺术形式)。

长期从事舞台美术设计创作与教学。先后在国内外设计创作了百余部戏剧舞台美术设计作品,涵盖话剧、戏曲、歌剧、舞剧、音乐剧与大型歌舞晚会等多个剧种及演出艺术门类。代表作品有:话剧《Big Love》(美国),歌剧《小二黑结婚》,京剧《瑞蚨祥》、《将军道》,桂剧《七步吟》,越剧《大道行吟》、《班昭》、《玉簪记》,楚剧《辛亥人家》,和琼剧《百年苍翠》等。

曾获第八届中国话剧艺术金狮奖舞台美术奖、第14届文华奖舞台美术设计奖、第二届中国舞台美术展优秀舞美创作奖。设计作品两次入选国家舞台艺术精品工程十大精品,五次获中国艺术节文华大奖、文华优秀剧目奖,三次获中国戏剧节优秀剧目大奖,以及中国戏曲学会奖、中国京剧艺术节金奖和中国黄梅戏艺术节金奖等国家级奖项。

蒙秦 灯光设计 国家一级舞美灯光设计师,中国舞台美术学会理事,北京舞蹈学院艺术设计系客座教授。其灯光设计作品连续多次荣获文华大奖,如舞剧《红高粱》、京剧《瑞蚨祥》、吕剧《李二嫂的新故事》,还有舞剧《草原记忆》和藏戏《金色家园》同获第四届全国少数民族汇演最佳灯光设计奖。此外,他还曾担任深圳第26届世界大学生运动会开幕式灯光设计。

张豫美 服装造型设计 国家一级舞台美术设计师,上海非物质文化遗产项目(越剧)代表性传承人,上海戏剧家协会理事,毕业于中国纺织大学服装设计专业。曾获第七届中国戏剧节优秀服装设计奖、优秀造型设计奖。

周志刚 副导演 1966年毕业于上海市戏曲学校昆剧第二届演员班。师承俞振飞、沈传芷两位昆剧艺术大师。为知名导演、昆剧著名小生演员。他基本功扎实、勤奋好学、戏路宽广、能戏颇多,凡巾生、冠生、穷生、雉尾生等、无不精通。曾任上海昆剧团导演、小生演员。现任上海国际昆曲联谊会会长(法定代表人),2010年被命名为上海市非物质文化遗产项目昆曲代表性传承人,2011年10月被中国昆剧古琴研究会聘请为理事,并担任台北昆剧团艺术总监,又聘请在上海戏剧学院附属上海市戏曲学校昆剧班教授昆剧艺术。

从事昆剧演出外,积极从事传承工作四十余年,除在上海、北京、永嘉、湖南等各大昆剧院团导戏教学外,还涉及其他剧种如京剧、淮剧、越剧、豫剧等成绩卓著。自1994年起,应台湾国立艺术大学、昆曲传习计划、台北昆剧团、戏曲与文学推广协会、水磨曲集、台湾昆剧团等专业剧团及业余团体邀请,赴台湾传授昆剧艺术,担任导演工作,前后三十余次。在此期间,开设义工讲座,传播戏曲知识和昆曲艺术,并采取台上台下互动形式,进行推广,以示奉献,深受观众青睐,人气高涨,以昆曲传承为使命,对海峡两岸的文化交流作出了不可磨灭的贡献!

曾接受《顾铁华振兴昆曲基金》邀请,录制《中国昆曲精品集粹系列DVD》(五十多出传统折子剧目);为台湾方面录制了《檀板清歌昆曲 OK 伴奏带》(十三张碟片);并为台湾文建会录制传统昆剧《闻领》、《扫花》、《三醉》、《张生游殿》等演出剧目。

《闯宫》是越剧传统剧目《打金枝》中,最具代表性的一折。讲的是嫁给汾阳王之子郭暧为妻的升平公主傲慢骄矜,汾阳王花甲寿辰之日,她却自恃金枝玉叶,以“君拜臣无此礼”为由未去祝寿。郭暧怒而回宫打了公主,公主气急,状告皇帝。

此折人物个性鲜明,郭暧的年少气盛和公主的骄傲自大,都刻画得栩栩如生。

《书馆》是具神话色彩的传奇剧《追鱼》中唯美浪漫的一折。故事讲述自幼与金丞相之女牡丹订下婚约的张珍,因亲亡家败,投奔金府。丞相对眼前家贫落魄的张珍心生嫌弃,借口三代不招白衣女婿,命他在碧波潭边草堂读书。张珍朗朗的读书声感动了潭中鲤鱼精,当夜变做牡丹与他相会。

情探·行路敫桂英 王婕饰

《情探》说的是名妓敫桂英因情郎王魁负心,在海神庙自缢而亡。桂英亡魂以情试探,却因王魁不改绝情,最终活捉王魁。而《行路》一折则写桂英在海神庙自缢后,海神爷可怜桂英遭遇,命判官引其鬼魂进京与王魁对证。

此折借鉴川剧的身段动作,让桂英以四尺长袖边歌边舞,展现主人翁美丽动人的鬼魂形象。

《情探》再一折《活捉》接着写桂英鬼魂来到王魁新居,因为不舍夫妻恩义,她再次以情试探,不料王魁罔顾妻子的深情,仍然负心绝情,桂英盛怒之下,活捉王魁。

本折演员以层层推进的表演,细腻地表现出鬼的深情和人的无义。

越剧四大经典之一的《梁山伯与祝英台》,说的是梁祝二人真心相爱,却遭祝父反对,最终双双殉情,化蝶双飞。

此折《楼台会》为《梁祝》中感人至深的段子。话说梁山伯到祝家提亲,未料得知祝英台已被父亲许配予马文才。祝家楼台相会之际,二人互诉相思之情,约定生不同衾死同穴,黯然而别。

《梁祝》的舞台演出版本多为“范傅版”,本场演出的《楼台会》则是徐王版,全折深情缠绵,凄切哀婉,意蕴深长。

钱惠丽

上海越剧院副院长,国家一级演员,当代越剧表演艺术家、著名“徐(玉兰)派”小生,也是中国戏剧家协会理事、上海戏剧家协会副主席、更是上海市非物质文化遗产项目代表性传承人。除外,她也是中国民主同盟上海市委员会常委,并曾连续三届担任上海市委(1993年至2007年),2007年入选为上海市领军人才。

这些年来荣获许多戏剧奖项,包括第17届中国戏剧梅花奖、第九届文华表演奖、第三和第五届上海白玉兰戏剧表演艺术主角奖、第26届上海白玉兰戏剧表演艺术配角奖榜首、第三届中国越剧艺术节优秀表演奖、第四届中国金唱片奖、全国中青年演员广播大奖赛优秀演员奖、宝钢高雅艺术奖。另外,所主演的多部越剧电视剧中,《红楼梦》获飞天一等奖、五个一工程奖,《孔雀东南飞》获金鹰奖,《蝴蝶梦》获飞天奖和兰花奖男主角奖。

王志萍

国家一级演员,当代越剧表演艺术家、著名“王(文娟)派”花旦,也是上海戏剧家协会理事和上海市非物质文化遗产项目代表性传承人。

主要代表剧目有:《红楼梦》、《海明珠》、《追鱼》、《皇帝与村姑》、《孟丽君》、《毋忘曲》、《蝴蝶梦》、《春香传》、《西园记》、《白衣卿相》、《盘夫索夫》、《西厢记·佳期》、《秋色渐浓》、《双飞翼》、《甄嬛》(下本)等。

曾荣获第25届中国戏剧梅花奖(即第三届中国戏剧奖·梅花表演奖)、第13届上海白玉兰戏剧表演艺术主角奖、第八届中美电影节“金天使·最佳女主角奖”、第三届中国越剧艺术节优秀表演奖、浙江省戏曲汇演青年演员一等奖、浙江省十佳优秀新人奖、全国越剧广播大奖赛优秀演唱奖,以及江、浙、沪越剧电视大奖赛一等奖等。

享有“大舞台之星”称号的她,同钱惠丽联合主演的越剧电视剧《蝴蝶梦》获飞天奖和兰花奖女主角奖。2011与2014年获上海市文艺家荣誉称号。

黄慧

国家一级演员,著名“陆(锦花)派”小生兼演“徐(天红)派”老生。上海戏剧家协会会员。

主要代表剧目有:《情探》、《盘夫索夫》、《碧玉簪》、《红楼梦》、《桃李梅》、《打金枝》、《孟丽君》、《追鱼》、《风雨大观园》、《梦里云间》、《风雪渔樵》、《珍珠塔·前见姑》、《救风尘》、《倩女离魂》、《韩非子》、《西园记》、《双飞翼》、《甄嬛》(下本)等。

曾荣获全国越剧大奖赛荧屏奖、第25届上海白玉兰戏剧表演艺术奖配角奖,她所主演的小戏《倩女离魂》获2000年上海小剧(节)目汇演剧目奖。

享有“八大”新星和“东方戏剧之星”称号的她,于2007年11月举办“越苑青春风——吴群个人越剧专场”,获颁青年专场优秀表演奖;2010年12月举办粉墨佳年华——“红粉·须眉”吴群、杨婷娜越剧专场,获年度“粉墨之星”称号。曾获“良渚文化杯”第三届全国越剧演唱大赛金奖榜首、第23届上海白玉兰戏剧表演艺术配角提名奖、首届中国戏曲演唱大赛红梅奖“红梅大奖”、“越女争锋”越剧青年演员电视挑战赛金奖、上海越剧新秀奖、“小蝶杯”上海越剧新秀奖。

盛舒扬

国家二级演员,“傅(全香)派”传人,毕业自上海戏曲学校。工花旦,除拜师越剧表演艺术家傅全香外,也得胡佩娣的指导。

主要剧目有:《梁山伯与祝英台》、《李娃传》、《红楼梦》、《西厢记》、《蝴蝶梦》、《青衫·红袍》、《珍珠塔》、《梅龙镇》、《皇帝与村姑》、《紫玉钗》、《情探·阳告》、《窦娥冤·斩娥》、《末代皇后》、《千里送京娘》、《甄嬛》(下本)等。

享有“东方戏剧之星”称号的她,于2008年6月举办了“越苑青春风——盛舒扬个人越剧专场”,获青年专场优秀表演奖;她曾获首届中国戏曲演唱大赛红梅奖金奖、荣获“越女争锋”首季与II季越剧青年演员电视挑战赛金奖及“最佳花旦”称号、全国地方戏曲精品折子戏评比展演暨戏曲青年演员大奖赛二等奖、上海越剧新秀奖、“小蝶杯”上海越剧新秀奖等。

丁小蛙

国家一级演员,著名“毕(春芳)派”小生,师从著名越剧表演艺术家毕春芳,上海戏剧家协会会员。

主要剧目有:《白蛇传》、《花为媒》、《玉蜻蜓》、《卖油郎》、《玉簪记》、《救风尘》、《蝴蝶梦》、《血手印》、《孟丽君》、《王老虎抢亲》等。

曾荣获第17届上海白玉兰戏剧表演艺术配角奖提名,“日发杯”全国越剧青年演员大奖赛二等奖、浙江省第二届戏剧小百花奖、温州市第四届戏剧节青年演员表演一等奖、先后获浙江省戏剧节第四届青年演员三等奖和第五届演员表演二等奖、先后在1992和1993年两年获得“乐清市文艺发展基金百花奖”表演奖。

“张(桂凤)派”传人,毕业自上海市戏曲学校。工老生,由著名演员许矞云、章海灵、金红等传授。在《情探》、《孟丽君》、《李娃传·曲江责子》、《红楼梦·笞宝玉》、《烂柯山·痴梦》、《王老虎抢亲》、《甄嬛》等剧目中饰演不同角色。

“傅(全香)派”传人,毕业自上海戏曲学校。工青衣,由越剧表演艺术家傅全香与著名演员胡佩娣、陈颖等传授。

主要剧目有:《断指记》、《梁山伯与祝英台》、《李娃传》、《青衫·红袍》、《孔雀东南飞》、《情系山河恋》、《情探》、《虞美人》、《甄嬛》、《末代皇后》、《范进中举》、《玉簪记·逼侄赴考》、《韩非子》和《范蠡与西施》等。其中所主演的《范蠡与西施》获中国戏剧奖·小戏小品奖优秀剧目奖、“小蝶杯”上海越剧新秀提名奖。

裘丹莉

国家二级演员,“傅(全香)派”传人,毕业自绍兴县戏曲艺术学校。工花旦,除拜师越剧表演艺术家傅全香外,也得著名演员陈飞、陈颖的传授。

主要剧目有:《梁山伯与祝英台》、《李娃传》、《情探》、《情系山河恋》、《甄嬛》、《可卿自缢》、《烂柯山·痴梦》、《晴雯补裘》、《尘缘》、《情殇马嵬》等。

2008年4月举办了“越苑青春风——裘丹莉个人越剧专场”,荣获青年专场表演奖;她曾先后获浙江省第八届戏剧节表演三等奖、越剧青年演员大奖赛优秀表演奖、绍兴南方杯十佳歌手称号、全国“越女争锋”越剧青年演员电视挑战赛银奖、第十七届上海白玉兰戏剧表演艺术新人主角提名奖。
