Agustín Lanús, founder of Agustín Lanús Wines, is an Argentine Agricultural Engineer, Sommelier and Master of Science in Viticulture and Oenology from the highly respected Vinifera EuroMaster program, completing his studies in Montpellier and Bordeaux, France and in Asti, Italy.

Before and after completing his master’s degree in Europe’s most prestigious program for winemaking, Agustin worked in wineries around the world, including Ceretto, Alba, Italy; Chateau Beychevelle, Bordeaux, France; Rutini, Tupungato, Argentina; Bodega Burdigala, Toro, Spain; Lurton, Douro, Portugal; KWV, Paarl, South Africa.

In 2006 Agustin travelled to Salta Province, Argentina with the specific goal of exploring the unique micro-terroirs found in the extreme altitude regions of the Calchaqui Valley. It was at this time he completed a comprehensive study on the viability of planting a vineyard in Luracatao at 2,728 masl. That vineyard, one of the highest, was built in 2009 and today is managed by Agustín Lanús Wines which uses the grapes to produce the SUNAL Extreme Altitude Malbec.

SUNAL ÍCONO Our Flagship Extreme Altitude Malbec

100% Malbec made from grapes grown in extreme altitude micro-terroirs in Argentina’s Calchaqui Valley.

The vineyards, located between 2,200 meters and 2,700 meters above sea level, are among the highest in the world.

Winemaking: 100% native yeast, long maceration of more than 25 days, natural malolactic fermentation, bottled unfined and unfiltered. Aged one year in old French oak barrels and a second year in new barrels.

Tasting Notes: The ultra-premium SUNAL ÍCONO is made from grapes grown at the very limits of where grapes can be grown. The length of time required for grapes to mature at such extreme altitudes produces an incredibly complex and full-bodied wine. The color is a rich purple, with the nose dominated by black olives, violet flowers, blackberry, some spicy notes like dill with a long balsamic finish.

    Alc: 14.9% by vol

    Production: 2015 vintage - a very limited 3,000 bottles

  • AGUAYO A collaboration with leading Chilean winemaker Stefano Gandolini

This collaboration between long-time friends brings together Agustin Lanus’s deep knowledge of the micro-terroirs of Argentina’s Upper Calchaqui Valley with Stefano Gandolini’s special style of winemaking.

Winemaking: The wine is fermented in a stainless-steel tank with 7 days of pre-fermentation at 10°C, then inoculated with selected yeast. Malolactic fermentation is done naturally in used barrels from 2008, aged two years before being aged one year in bottle. Unfined and unfiltered.

Tasting Notes: Aguayo is an elegant example of an extreme altitude wine, complex and fresh from the natural acidity found in carefully sourced extreme altitude vineyards located in Hualfin, Catamarca province, Argentina. An old world style wine with a long finish in the mouth, Aguayo evokes a sense of dried cherries and black currants, with rose mosqueta floral notes and a soft mint finish.

    Alc: 13.5% by vol.
