Laurie Beth Jones has written an interesting book called Jesus, CEO: Using Ancient Wisdom for Visionary Leadership. She looks at how Jesus was a leader, and then encourages leaders to follow these same principles in their own leadership practices today. The chapters are short and the insights are simple. In fact, I include a chapter here called “He Stuck to His Mission.”

Jesus knew his mission statement, and he did not deviate from it. He declared that his mission was, in essence, to teach people about a better way of life. He saw himself as a teacher and a healer. An ancient adage says “If you want to defeat them, distract them.” In the wilderness Jesus was given several “business opportunities” that did not relate to his mission.

Each of these opportunities was related to talents that Jesus had, and used, in some form or another during his tenure. But he resisted them because they didnotfithismissionstatement.

Pause for a moment and consider the things Jesus did not do. Here is someone endowed with limitless power from on high. He could have done literally anything. Yet he did not build a temple or a synagogue. He did not write or distribute books. He did not even heal all the sick people in the world. He did not go down to the graveyards and raise everyone from the dead. Hedidnotbuildshoppingmalls.Hismissionwasveryspecific.

Jesus stuck to his mission.

Pastor Search CommitteeThe Pastor Search Committee is making use of the information you provided during our recent conversations. The pastor profile weconstructed was presented at the last Church Conference, along withyourinformationwhichguidedtheprocess.Wehavedirectlycontacted over forty individuals or organizations and asked them for candidates who fit our profile. The Committee continues toreceive names and resumes on a daily basis, which has been very encouraging. However, we have entered the phase of evaluations. Evaluation of resumes; evaluation of references; evaluation of sermons; and soon, evaluation of personal interviews. There are no short cuts. This is a time consuming phase of our task. The Committee continues to meet on Thursday evenings. Pray for us and our church at that time... and any time.
