We are already battling colds and fevers. Please remember that giving your child medication and sending them to school is not recommended. We understand the hardship that missing work has on your family. However, sending your child to school ill can be disastrous for medically fragile students

ese medically fragile people need to stay as healthy as possible so that a trip to the hospital isn’t need-

When calling your child in absent due to illness, please be prepared to briefly share what symptoms they are expe- riencing. We track illnesses to find clusters within particular grades or even classrooms so that we can alert parents of symptoms to watch for at home. If a voicemail is left stating that your child is “out sick”, please expect a return call from me asking for more details.

Yours in Health,

Mrs. Z

Welcome back! I hope everyone enjoyed a nice, relaxing summer. These first couple of weeks ool have been wonderful. Students in grades 1-5 year off by making Pinwheels for Peace. They did job. My husband helped us out with the display

this year by cutting and edging some 2x4s and drilling holes in the top. The students decorated 8 pieces with markers and also helped assemble the pinwheels in each one. Be sure to check them out if you get a chance. The pinwheels are cur- rently on display in Mr. O’s office windows, the front office, and the front hallway windows. Great work everyone!

FRES is looking for individuals to help support the FRES Theater Club. If you are int ested in helping out please email S Chapo at [email protected]. The first meeting will be Thursday, October 22, 2015 with more details

Everyone here at the Early Learning Center is settling in. The children have all done a wonderful job getting into the routine here in Kindergarten. We have met many new friends and are learning how we are alike and different. We are learning to write our names and learning to read words. The boys and girls have all met Echo, (the owl from Fundations) and are learning the sounds of letters with her. Numbers are getting easier to write and we have done a lot of counting using manipulatives as well as ourselves. Now that it is fall we are looking forward to learning about apples, pumpkins, and lots about fall. We will have a Halloween parade this month. We look forward to sharing pictures with you.

We are off to a wonderful start! We have been work- ing on establishing community within our classrooms, learning procedures and rules, and building our stamina to last an entire day in school! We have tasted apples and will make apple goodies like applesauce and apple pie. The growth we will see from now through the end of the school year will be huge. Our best advice to parents is to read each night with your child and make sure they are responsible for doing their homework.

We look forward to our first field trip October 21st and meeting with you for parent conferences.

In second grade, we have had a lot of fun getting to know your children. We have been busy making new friends and learning the expectations of the classroom and building. Your students have been sharing details of their weekends in their weekend writing journals, they are becoming quite the writers.

In math, we have been working on Addition and Subtraction con- cepts with vocabulary terms such as addends, differences, sums, counting on, counting back, and fact families. We have also tak- en a lot of base line assessments just to see where everyone is at and to track progress!

In reading, we are starting off with reading about fire safety, Mr. Putter and Tabby Pour the Tea, and David Makes a New Friend. We have talked about character and setting, plot, summary, main idea, and details.

See you around the school yard,

The Second Grade Team!

The PTO proudly announces the return of Friday night skate. K-3 skate will be October 23rd. 4th & 5th Grade skate will be October 30th. This is a wonderful event for the children. They really look forward to the skates. We can not do it without all the volunteers. We always welcome new volunteers to help with skate guard duties and snack bar. The Roller Skating theme for October will be to dress in your Halloween Costumes.

Welcome to Third Grade! This year has started off wonderfully with the students from Florence Rideout and Lyndeborough Central School joining together. We are all adjusting to the new school building together. Along with our new building comes new friends to be made, and we are all making some new friends this year.

The third grade students have begun switching classrooms to learn some of their language arts skills including; spelling, writ- ing, and cursive and vocabulary. This change to our schedule allows the students to see, and get to know, all of the third grade teachers.

As far as other academics are concerned, we have begun working on place value in math, fossils in science, and reading comprehension skills in reading. We look forward to continuing this journey of learning together.

Take a look the picture of using our br new compu lab to comp some math work.

Fourth grade is off to a great start! Students have been busy learning about character traits and allu- sions in Greek Mythology. Students in Mrs. Fuller’s class have been studying forces and motion. Students in Mrs. Roper’s class have been exploring map and globe skills. All students have completed their unit on place value. As we move into October, we will be beginning our Science and Social Studies rotation with Mrs. Fuller teaching Science and Mrs. Roper teaching Social Studies. We will be moving onto addition and subtraction of whole numbers and understanding multiplication and

division.

October is already here and music is off to a great start! The first and second graders have enjoyed learning all about Pete the Cat and his songs this month. They have also been learning the Star Dance to Pachelbel’s Cannon in D. Here are Mrs. Songer’s students doing the Star Dance and enjoying the spacious music room.

The upper grades at FRES have been reviewing the musi- cal language of ta and ti-ti. This coming month we will be working very hard to master reading music so we can begin playing our instruments! Reminder: 4th and 5th grade chorus is beginning October 1st and will be every Thursday from 12:00-12:25.

The fifth grade teachers have been keeping our stu- dents busy establishing routines and getting to know each other. Each class has been reading great litera- ture and talking and writing about it. We are building our vocabulary, and learning new words to spell with lessons that are even fun. The fifth grade teachers are looking forward to meeting you all at the parent/teacher conferences the week of October 5th.

In Mr. Zink’s science class the students have been learning about the scientific method and some of the tools that scientists use to investigate and experiment. They have also been learning about customary and metric measurement. We finished up our measurement unit by having a Metric Olympics which the students all enjoyed tremendously.

Right now in Ms. Tierney’s math class students are learning all about place value with whole numbers and decimals too! Next we will expand our knowledge of multiplication and division. This will be followed by more work with decimals, along with fractions and some geometry. The only way to learn math is to do math, and we will have fun doing lots of math this year!

Mrs. Nahass truly loves American histo- ry! Students began with the study of Vikings who first came to North America about 1000 years ago. Yes, those camp-

fire stories they told were actually true. Next, students traveled through the centuries learning about the ad- ventures Marco Polo, the contributions of Prince Hen- ry, the determination shown by Christopher Columbus, Amerigo Vespucci, and Ferdinand Magellan, and even one smart monarch, Queen Isabella of Spain whose investment in exploration changed the course of history.

Google Apps for Education / Google Drive Google.com is where every student signs in to their Google Drive Account. Password cards may have been sent home by your child’s teacher. If not, you may request one. Student user names are email addresses, but email is inactive for elementary students. Once signed in, stu- dents have access to Google Classroom and Google Drive which is a cloud storage space that also has applications for creating documents known as Google Apps. The apps in Google Drive are similar to Microsoft Office Products, but with more collaborative capabilities and fewer format- ting options. Its cloud based, so Google Drive can be accessed from any computer that has access to the inter- net.  Digital Portfolios: Each student has a portfolio folder in their Google Drive account containing some of their best work from each grade level. These folders are shared with the teacher, the technology teacher and the principal. At the teacher's discretion, the folders can also be shared with parents. Their portfolio folders and their Drive accounts will live with them throughout their careers at SAU 63.

ile these assessments may appear overwhelm- , please know that adequate time and optimal

conditions are provided for students to do their best. Teachers all discuss in great lengths the purpose of the assessments and test taking strategies to help them be successful. The schools encourage all stu- dents to do their best and keep a positive attitude when they approach each assessment. Both schools are extremely proud of their students, and these assessments are a few ways to share stu- dents’ academic success with the communities.

Parents often ask what they can do to support their students at home. The following are some helpful tips to support your students during this time.

Here are some helpful tips for parents to help their children prepare for state and standardized testing.

Make sure students have a healthy breakfast.

Allow students to get a good night’s sleep.  Try to avoid scheduling appointments during the day.

Make sure students arrive at school on Ɵme.

Make sure students have any needed medicaƟon.  Reinforce  that  students  should  take  their Ɵme, listen and

read all direcƟons, aƩempt all the quesƟons, and do their best.

Remind students that you are proud of them!
