The Agony in the Garden—The Place Where Angels
Strengthen Us
Trevor Herriot wr ites: “Only after we have let the deser t do
its full work in us will angels finally come and minister to us.”
That’s one of the lessons of Gethsemane. It’s only after the
deserts of loneliness, duty, and helplessness have done their
work in Jesus that “an angel from heaven came and ministered
to him.” A unique thing can happen to us when we are
overwhelmed. When the burden of self-sacrifice prostrates us
in weakness and leaves us sweating blood, it’s then that God’s
strength can flow into us most deeply. Many people have
experienced this.
Martin Luther King, for example, recounts his own Agony in
the Garden and the angel that came to strengthen him:
One night toward the end of January, I settled into bed late,
after a strenuous day. Coretta had already fallen asleep and
just as I was about to doze off the telephone rang. An angry
voice said, ‘Listen, nigger, we’ve taken all we want from
you, before next week you’ll be sorry you ever came to
Montgomery.’ I hang up, but I couldn’t sleep. It seemed that
all of my fears had come down on me at once. I had reached
a saturation point. I got out of bed and began to walk the
floor. Finally I went to the kitchen and heated a pot of
coffee. I was ready to give up. With my cup of coffee sitting
untouched before me I tried to think of a way to move out of
the picture without appearing a coward.
In this state of exhaustion, when my courage had all but
gone, I decided to take my problem to God. With my head in
my hands, I bowed over the kitchen table and prayed aloud.
The words I spoke to God that midnight are still vivid in my
memory:

Esa es una de las lecciones de Getsemaní. Hasta después de que

en Jesús, "vino un ángel del cielo a fortalecerlo". Algo
abrumador puede sucedernos. Cuando la carga del sacrificio
propio nos postra en debilidad y nos deja sudando sangre, es
entonces que la fuerza de Dios puede fluir en nosotros más
profundamente. Muchas personas han experimentado esto.
Martin Luther King, por ejemplo, cuenta su propia Agonía en el
jardín y el ángel que vino a fortalecerlo:
Una noche, a finales del mes de enero, me acosté tarde, después
de un día agotador. Coretta ya se había quedado dormida y justo
cuando estaba a punto de quedarme dormido, sonó el teléfono.
Una voz enojada dijo: "Escucha, negro, hemos tomado todo lo
que queremos de ti, antes de la próxima semana lamentarás
haber venido a Montgomery". Colgué el teléfono, pero no pude

ahora tengo miedo. La gente me está buscando para
liderazgo, y si me paro ante ellos sin fuerza y sin valor, ellos
también titubearan. Estoy al final de mis poderes. No me
queda nada. He llegado al punto en que Yo no puedo
enfrentarlo solo"
En ese momento experimenté la presencia de lo Divino como
nunca antes lo había experimentado.
El paralelismo con Jesús en Getsemaní es tan obvio que es
demasiado para procesar. Dios envía ángeles para
fortalecernos precisamente cuando Dios nos encuentra
postrados, sudando la sangre del deber. Especialmente ese tipo
de sudor también hace algo más por nosotros.
En los relatos de Getsemaní se nos dice que, inmediatamente
después de ser fortalecido por un ángel, Jesús se levanta del
suelo y camina con valor para enfrentar la prueba que le
espera. Su agonía y el fortalecimiento que recibe dentro de él,
lo prepararon para el dolor que le esperaba. De hecho, en la
época de Jesús, la palabra "agonía" tenía un doble sentido: más
allá de su significado, también se refería a una "preparación"
particular que un atleta haría justo antes de ingresar a la arena
o al estadio. El atleta se prepararía a sí mismo para la
competencia trabajando un cierto sudor (agonía) con la idea de
que este ejercicio y la espuma que producía se concentrarían y
prepararían tanto sus energías como sus músculos para los
rigores que se acercaban. Ningún atleta quiere participar en el
concurso sin preparación.
Los escritores de los evangelios quieren que tengamos esta
misma imagen de Jesús cuando sale del Jardín de Getsemaní:
su agonía ha provocado una cierta espuma emocional, física y
espiritual, por lo que ahora está preparado, un atleta enfocado,
debidamente preparado para entrar en la batalla. Además,
debido a su fortalecimiento, aporta cierta energía divina, de
hecho está más preparado que cualquier atleta.
Christina Crawford, escribiendo sobre un momento bajo en su
vida, una vez comentó: "¡Perdido también es un lugar!" De
hecho, bíblicamente, es un lugar muy importante. Es el lugar
donde los ángeles pueden venir a fortalecernos y es el lugar
que nos prepara para la batalla espiritual. Cuando nuestra
propia fuerza cede, cuando el dolor del deber parece
demasiado, cuando nos postramos en debilidad y nos
encogemos ante lo que la verdad, la justicia y Dios parecen
pedirnos, cuando hemos llegado al punto en que, como Martin
Luther King, ya no podemos enfrentarnos solos, finalmente

“I am here taking a stand for what I believe is right. But
now I am afraid. The people are looking to me for
leadership, and if I stand before them without strength and
courage, they too will falter. I am at the end of my powers. I
have nothing left. I’ve come to the point where I can’t face
it alone.”
At that moment I experienced the presence of the Divine as
I had never experienced him before.
The parallel to Jesus in Gethsemane is so obvious that it’s
superfluous to elaborate on it. God sends angels to strengthen
us precisely when God finds us lying prostrate, sweating the
blood of duty. Moreover that particular kind of sweat does
something else for us as well.
In the Gethsemane accounts we’re told that, right after being
strengthened by an angel, Jesus gets up off the ground and
walks with courage to face the ordeal that awaits him. His
agony and the strengthening he receives within it, readied him
for the pain that lay ahead. Indeed, at the time of Jesus, the
word “agony” had a double sense: Beyond its more obvious
meaning, it also referred to a particular “readying” that an
athlete would do just before entering the arena or stadium. The
athlete would ready himself (in those days the athlete normally
was a he) for the contest by working up a certain sweat (agony)
with the idea that this exercise and the lather it produced would
concentrate and make ready both his energies and muscles for
the rigours that lay ahead. No athlete wants to enter the contest
unprepared, unready.
The gospel writers want us to have this same image of Jesus as
he leaves the Garden of Gethsemane: his agony has brought
about a certain emotional, physical, and spiritual lather so that
he is now readied, a focused athlete, properly prepared to enter
the battle. Moreover, because of his strengthening he brings a
certain divine energy, he is indeed more ready than any athlete.
Christina Crawford, writing about a low time in her life, once
commented: “Lost is a place too!” Indeed, biblically, it’s a
very important place. It’s the place where angels can come and
minister to us and it’s the place that readies us for spiritual
battle. When our own strength gives out, when the pain of duty
seems too much, when we lie prostrate in weakness and cringe
before what truth, justice, and God seem to be asking of us,
when we’ve come to the point where, like Martin Luther King,
we can no longer face it alone, we’re finally at that place where
angels can minister to us and we’ve finally worked up the
spiritual lather that has readied our souls and bodies for the
Good Fridays that await us all.
Certain things, Trevor Herriot suggests, can only happen in
gardens and deserts:
How long, covered in the sackcloth of grass, thorn and sky,
before our desires and illusions fall to intimations of
communion; before edges dissolve and we comprehend the
mystic’s dream of union beyond all boundaries and

Baptism�
English Baptism Preparation Sessions, for both Parents and
Godparents are normally held on the Second Sunday of each
month. Please call the parish office in order to register for the
session. The session will include a discussion of the sacrament
of Baptism, the completion of the necessary forms, a review of
the guidelines for potential Godparents and the date for the
Baptism will be chosen. English Baptisms take place on the
fourth weekend of the month at one of the Masses, or on a
Saturday afternoon of the month.

If you or a loved one is going to the hospital for surgery or
treatment, we urge you to receive the Sacrament of Anointing
of the Sick before being hospitalized. The Sacrament can be
received after any Mass or by appointment. While the friars
respond to hospital emergency call requests, receiving the
Sacrament before going to the hospital is preferable in the event
that one of the friars is not immediately
available in an emergency. Your family and
friends are welcome to join you for this special
celebration so they can pray for you too.

In November, Blessed Sacrament is bringing a group of 15 to
NCYC (National Catholic Youth Conference), in Indianapolis,
Indiana. This event brings thousands of Catholic youth and
young adults from every corner of the country together for a
weekend of community, music, and worship.
We will be traveling to and from Indiana on a bus.
If you would like to help with the cost of transportation, please
talk to Coordinator of Youth Ministry, Leo Quinn.

Sacramental Preparation for Reconciliation and Eucharist
Family Based Religious Education (FBRE) is a monthly faith
formation program for Kindergarten through 8th grade children
and adults that provides the oppor tunity for parents/
guardians and children to learn about their faith together and
grow in relationship with Jesus as a family – the “domestic
church.” Preparation for the Sacraments of Reconciliation and
Eucharist are also coordinated through this program.

session for recognizing and reporting child
and elder abuse and neglect. This training
session, as required by the Diocese of
Raleigh, is for all adults - clergy,
employees and volunteers who work with
children and youth here at Blessed
Sacrament Parish or within the Diocese of
Raleigh. Any catechists, youth chaperones,
any youth choir members (18 years and
older), and parents who receive children of the parish in their
homes are required to attend. This free session can serve as
your initial training or as your 5-year renewal.

Entrenamiento de Ambiente Seguro
Habrá una sesión de Entrenamiento de Ambiente Seguro para
reconocer y reportar abuso y la negligencia de niños y los

and Volunteers met for
2 weeks from 159
different countries. The
Scouts participated in
many exciting high
adventure activities, as
well as exchanging
cultural aspects from
their home country. Good will and friendships were
exchanged.

asistió recientemente a Boy Scout World Jamboree en
