From the Principal’s Desk
Game On! We’re Racing to the Top!
We’ve had a busy first month of school. Our Kindergarten and First grade students
completed their Water Safety lessons at the Boy Scout Camp. Students swam like fish,
sharks, whales and we even had a couple who took off on their own. Students participated
in the Sea Island Arts Festival and they performed with Frierson Pride. Thanks to all the
parents who supported Frierson and their children. Fifth grade students had a lesson
about the Diamondback Terrapin Turtles from the Kiawah Terrapin Working Club and an
autographed framed picture and books were donated to the school. We had an amazing
turnout for our Grits and Gravy for Grandparents; students enjoyed having
grandparents, parents, and other family members eat breakfast with them. A special
“Thank You” to St. James Bethel A.M.E. Church and Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority for
showering teachers with back to school supplies.
We would also like to welcome our new PTA Officers for the 2013-2014 school year.
President/Kennitha LaBoard, Vice President/Shaniqua Seabrook, Secretary/LaRhonda
Tumolo, Assistant Secretary/Ashley Chisolm-Brown, Treasurer/Quindella Capers and
Assistant Treasurer/Annette Gadsden.
Academically, students have been engaged in Measures of Academic Progress, an
assessment taken three times a year, which allows teachers to monitor and differentiate
classroom instruction to meet the needs of children in Reading, Math and Language Arts.
Progress Reports went home this past week, which is another means of monitoring your
child’s progress; please feel free to schedule a conference with your child’s teacher to get
more detailed information.
Frierson has an open door policy and you are always welcomed to come by and visit. We
just ask that you bring your license for signing in, as we continue to keep the environment
conducive and safe for our students and staff. If you have any questions, please feel free
to call or email me at 559-4500 or [email protected]
Sincerely,
Nancy Ross, Principal

OOOOOOOOO, ALL ABOARD!!
Look who is coming down the tracks! It’s the C.D. Learning Express Train and they are
moving fast. You better hold on tightly to your hat. This train means business and that’s a fact.
Here they come swiftly over the tracks, and no
cabooses are looking back. “We are so excited”, shouted Caboose One. We will share why
learning Language is so much fun.
In Language Arts, we are learning the ABC and
the sound each letter makes, new words, and story skills too! “That’s enough”, said Caboose Two we, “we are known as the Magnificent Math Crew! “ Active learning is what we do, counting, comparing sets, graphing, sorting and classifying
too. This is just the beginning we have so much more to do. Caboose Three yelled, “Oh we have
something to say, we are Wonderful Writers and plan to keep it that way!” We form the
strokes by sliding, swinging and whoops. Forming
the letters are so much fun! Last but not least, Caboose Four shouted, “Clear the landing, here
we come, Sensational Discovery is on the run.” The five senses, life cycle of plants, animals,
and seasons are some the studies we’ll explore.
We’ll also put on our scientific hats to investigate how and why facts.
Everyone listen, be quiet and still. The conductors have something to say to our little
cabooses. We LOVE you and we are so happy to have you here!!!!
Kindergarten Mrs. Eliza McDaniel Ms. Viola Mitchell
We are “Setting Our Sails for Success” this
year in Kindergarten! Our school wide theme
is “Game On!” Kindergarten is off to a great start this year. We have been working hard in
all academic areas, and I am extremely proud
of each one of my students!
Science: This month we will finish up our study
of paper and wood as we investigate the different properties of each. We have really
enjoyed learning how to observe and conduct scientific investigations throughout our
scientific studies! We will be learning about the life cycle of the pumpkin seed this month.
We are planning a field trip to the pumpkin
patch as well! More information will be given about the field trip soon.
Social Studies: We will be learning about our neighborhood, community jobs, and families
this month.
ELA: Reading and writing are primary focuses
in kindergarten. We will continue to review our letters, letter sounds, and recognize beginning
and ending sounds in words. We will work on
the conventions of writing. Students will work in centers to develop their reading and writing
skills. One of my many favorite things about teaching kindergarten is watching the growth
that happens as the students build upon their reading and writing skills!
First Grade Ms. Natasha Norris
Dear First Grade Families,
The students are adjusting well to first grade.
We have been working hard and doing lots of learning. Stop in any time to see what we are up
to!
Upcoming Weeks at a Glance:
Math: First graders will be finishing up Chapter 1 (addition concepts) and beginning Chapter 2
(subtraction concepts) of the new My Math
curriculum. We have been working hard on
developing fluency for addition facts with sums of 0-10.
ELA: Students continue to build their stamina for reading. This month we will be introducing
the last two components of the Daily Five, Word
Work and Writing. We will practice the short i sounds; creating short vowel word families (-ip
and –it). Also, look in homework folders soon for nightly reading logs.
Science: Our plants are growing wild in the classroom. We have been watering them, making
observations, and watching them grow every day.
Students will continue to practice conducting simple experiments and practice being
scientists.
Social Studies: Students will be learning about
community members and jobs. If you have a special job you do within our community, please
feel free to come in and teach us about it!
Kindergarten - continued
Math: This month, we will work on counting, our
numbers, and the quantities that they represent. As we get into place value, we will work on
counting by 1’s, 5’s and 10’s. We are going to have
great opportunities for the students to work with manipulatives in math centers! It is going to
be so much fun!
Thank you so much for all of the snacks you have
sent and the support you have given to our class already this year. We really appreciate it and we
could not do it without you!
We will have homework to complete in Kindergarten this year. Each evening, except on
Fridays, the students will have assignments to
complete in the homework journals. Parents please assist your child when needed at home
with homework and sign their notebooks when they have completed their assignments each
night. Thank you parents for all that you do!
5th Grade Visit with the Kiawah
River Terrapin Working Group
Students learned how they can help protect the terrapins and got up close to LIVE one. The group
donated 5 copies of The Tiny Turtle of the March
and a framed illustration by Bob Palmatier.
Second Grade Mrs. Lauren Marra
Are you ready for a super October? The
second grade “All-Stars” are!
Parents, thank you so much for all the help and
support that you all have shown our class in the 1st full month of school! I truly appreciate all
of the hugs, encouraging words, and the many donations of snacks and supplies. Second grade
parents are awesome!!
The second graders are continuing to improve our learning environment. This month, we came
up with our “Code of Cooperation”. The students decided that in order to have a
successful year, we need to do the following: 1) Listen to each other 2) Be nice to others 3) Be
polite 4) Be a good friend 5) Be safe 6) Talk
productively and be a good worker. We have also been setting goals for ourselves. The goal
we have been working on the last few weeks is to be a whole-body listener. Ask a second
grader what this is!
Math: We are continuing to work on Unit 1,
Operations and Algebraic Thinking. We are working on applying addition and subtraction
concepts. Have your child practice their
addition and subtraction facts to help build fluency. In Unit 2, we will be working on
number patterns.
ELA: We are making great progress with our
“The Daily Five” routine. The students can ”Read to Self”, “Read to Someone”, “Listen to
Reading”, and “Work with Words”. We are
working on our reading stamina and fluency. Be sure to help your child practice their weekly
words at home every night. Students should also read a minimum of 15 minutes every night,
and write it on their reading logs.
Science : We will practice being scientists, conducting simple experiments to explore and
practice inquiry skills. The first science kit second grade will be receiving is “Magnets”.
Third Grade Mrs. Crystal Blue
Reading/Spelling/English Language Arts: We will begin learning our capital cursive letters
this nine weeks. We are continuing to write in complete sentences. Parents, you can help
students practice talking in complete sentences
also. Don’t allow them to give you one word answers. Students are encouraged to READ,
READ, READ!
Social Studies: The students will compare the
culture, governance, and geographic location of different Native American nations in South
Carolina: Cherokee, Catawba, and Yemassee/Edisto. The students will
demonstrate an understanding of the
exploration and settlement of South Carolina and the United States including the idea of “for
king and country.” We will explore the accomplishments of explorers of South
Carolina: Hernando de Soto, Jean Ribault, Juan
Pardo, Henry Woodward, and William Hilton.
Science: We have completed our lessons on
Matter and Heat. We will be discussing how living things grow and change.
Math: Students will begin learning their multiplication
facts (0, 1, 2, 5, 10). We will continue to review comparing
numbers, ordering numbers,
rounding to the nearest tens and hundreds. Students will begin to Subtract with
Regrouping, Subtract Three-Digit Numbers, Subtract Four-Digit Numbers, and Subtract
across Zeros
Fourth Grade Ms. Patricia Nicholas
We are well on our Journey to becoming fluent
readers! This upcoming month will be full of new words, exciting stories, and captivating writing!
Remember to ask your child to give vivid details and
use expressive voices when retelling a story. For example, when riding in the car, ask them to
describe what they see out the window. Use color,
shape, size and smell words. Get creative, try to
have them give you riddles with a lot of description to guess the word! Please listen to your child read
out loud. This is the quickest and easiest way to
know if your child is reading fluently or still stumbling over sounding out simple words.
Encourage your child to ask for help when reading
new words.
For our Math portion of the month, we will be hitting
the ”ol’multiplication tables”. We will be doing time
trials to help with getting those multiplication facts
into memory! We will also make relationships between multiplying with 10, 100, and 1000. Rapidly
coming up, we will begin 2 digit times one or two
digits.
Science has been a blast, or should I say,
quite illuminating! We have used flashlights
to reflect and refract light. Ask them about tic-tac-toe with mirrors and light mazes!
Our next unit of study for Social Studies will be the
continuing exploration of the United States. The impact of how Spanish, French and English explorers
had on Native American tribes will be researched in
detail.
The Fourth Grade class has come to an agreement on
what our “Code of Cooperation” means to them.
With much discussion, they came up with a definition
of what a good student is and what are the class rules to follow. Here are their words:
“A good student is one that is quiet, a good listener,
follows directions, is responsible and respectful, and shows good citizenship.”
We all must work together in harmony to further
our education and succeed in the 21st Century.
Fifth Grade Mrs. Mattie Mitchell
Ms. Eulonda Mitchell
The Diplomats are still working hard!
Thank you for the great turn out at Open House!
Reading/ELA: We will continue to work on
strategies for building Vocabulary, Story Structure, and Draw Conclusions and Making
Inferences. Students are required to read for 20
minutes daily and complete the log book. Students
are also working on Report Form, Framing Your Thoughts, and Linguistics.
Writing: Activities will include Journal Writing and Compositions. We will focus on narrative writing
with multiple paragraphs, powerful sentences, and
appropriate vocabulary.
Math: This month we will go over the following
skills: Place Value of Whole Numbers and Decimal
Through Thousandths Multiply Whole numbers
Divide by a One-Digit Divisor
Divide by a Two-Digit Divisor
Solving Problems Develop fluency with whole number and
decimal operation
Science: We are studying Landforms and Oceans.
The students are using scientific thinking processes
to conduct investigations that introduce them to
the fundamental concepts in earth science.
Social Studies: (United States: 1865 to the
present) We are studying the Civil War and Reconstruction and Westward Expansion of the
United States.
Remember, you are always welcome to visit us, so
please feel free to stop in at anytime where, “We
are Racing to the Top!”
Resource Room News Ms. Kewana Grant
Update! This school year I will be working at Edith L. Frierson on a part-time basis
and part-time at St. Andrew’s School of Math and Science. I will send home a letter
letting you know the exact dates that I will
be at Edith L. Frierson. An individualize progress report will be going home along
with the general education teacher’s progress report on September 23, 2013.
Here are some strategies to assist your child with learning sight words.
Sight words are not meant to be sounded out. Learning these words helps the reader
to maintain fluency. Here are some games
that can assist your child with reading sight words encountered during reading.
1. Play coin toss-words on floor-children take turns to toss a coin onto a word
and say that word. 2. Place sight word cards in alphabetical
order.
3. Make words using play dough. 4. Make words using letter tiles-
scrabble pieces. 5. Make words using alphabet stamps.
6. Beat the clock-how many times can a word be written in 1 minute?
7. Children write their words in list
form and then write over the words 2 more times using different colors
to create rainbow words. 8. Play stepping stones-place words on
the floor and children walk over
them saying the word as they go to get to the other side of the stream.
9. Make words using magnetic letters. 10. Play musical words-children pass
words around in a circle until music stops-that child says the word. It
can be played with 1 or more words.
School Counseling Corner Mr. Robert Becker
We are looking forward to the fun-
filled month of October here at Frierson!
In our classroom guidance lessons this
month, we will be focusing on bullying
awareness. We will be learning about how
bullying looks/sounds, the different people
involved in a bullying situation and different
strategies to help empower students to take
a stand.
Our character value for this month is
individuality. Teaching students to be
independent and self-motivated are
important to social and emotional child
development.
Other important events in October include
Fire Safety, Red Ribbon Week, and Terrific
Kids. Please feel free to contact me with
any questions or concerns!
Primary Grade Academy Ms. Pat Nicholson
Poems give children practice in fluent speaking
and that leads to fluent reading!
Make learning fun with poems, rhymes and
songs. Old fashion tongue twisters develop speaking skills and oral fluency.
Seasonal poems and songs will allow your child
to develop a love of literature and an ease and flow of words.
Ask your student to recite this fun Pumpkin Poem!
Five Little Pumpkins
Five little pumpkins sitting on a gate
The first on said, "Oh my it's getting late."
The second one said, "There's magic in the
air."
The third one said, "But we don't care."
The fourth one said, "I'm ready for some
fun."
The fifth one said, "Let's run and run and
run."
Ooooo! went the wind and OUT went the
lights
and the five little pumpkins rolled out of
sight!
Media Matters Mrs. Lisa Schaffer
Thanks to all who supported the Fall Book Fair!
We had some happy shoppers with great new books in hand and earned funds for our school’s
library. We will have a Spring Book Fair as well.
The next exciting library sponsored event is …
Reading Prize Patrol!
KNOCK! KNOCK! KNOCK!
Frierson staff members will be knocking on
doors looking to catch students reading with the TVs turned off from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. on
October 14, 15, and 16. Balloons and prizes will be awarded to five randomly drawn students
each night who are caught reading! The
Reading Prize Patrol adventures will be videotaped and broadcasted on the WELF news
show.
Pledges will sent home in Wednesday folders on October 2. All students must return a signed
pledge to be place in the Reading Prize Patrol
drawing. Encourage your children to get those pledges in and read!
On October 30, we will be doing our first
“Trick, Treat, and Read” library program in
the media center during the day. Teachers will sign their classes up for a time slot to come to
the media center to enjoy awesome stories. Students just might MEET some LIVE book
characters too!
We’re encouraging all students to dress up as
THEIR favorite book character. No need to get fancy costumes, help them think of creative
and simple ways they can dress up. Enjoy reading lots of books as they decide on a
character!

Exercise: Different exercises yield different results. For example, dancing and martial arts
can increase flexibility, while push-ups and running can help build strong muscles. Aerobic
exercise, which is any exercise that makes you breathe hard, helps keep your heart happy.
Food: Here are a few ideas for healthy snacks to bring for the class:
Wheat crackers
Popcorn
Baked Chips
Granola bars
Pretzels (especially with low salt!)
Mind: A good belly laugh doesn’t just lighten the load mentally. It also lowers your body’s
stress hormone while increasing endorphins that boost your mood. Relax by turning on your
favorite comedy, reading comics, or talking to someone that makes you smile.
