60th BIRTHDAY OF AKOP ARUTYUNOVICH MANUKYAN May 30, 1967 marked the 60th birthday and 35th year of service of Akop Arutyunovich Manukyan, director of the Armenian Branch of the All-Union Order of Lenin Project Design and Research Institute of S. Ya. Zhuk Gidro- proekt. A. A. Manukyan was born in Akhaltsikhe, Georgia SSR, where he received a secondary education. Then he studied at the Karl Marx Erevan Polytechnic Institute and graduated in 1931 with a specialty in hydraulic engineer- ing. Upon graduation he worked as a design engineer for the construction of the Dzoraget hydroelectric station. Here, under the supervision of experienced specialists, A. A. Manukyan went to an excellent school which combined research work, designing and co nstructio n. From the very beginning of design to completion of the construction of the Sevan-Razdan sequence, A. A. Manukyan was an active participant in the development of these structures. Moving on from design engineer, assistant work superintendent, senior engineer, and department chief, after organization of the Armenian branch of the design institute Gidrognergo- proekt in 1946, he was appointed department chief and chief engineer of the Gyumush hydroelectric project, the most powerful hydroelectric sta- tion in Armenia. Since 1950 A. A. Manukyan has continuously headed Armgidroproekt, which has designed all of the major hydropower developments of the Re- public. Being one of the founders and then the director of this organiza- tion, he has done much to create its research facilities and production en- terprises and to construct housing for his associates. Energetic, active, he has shown himself to be an experienced director of the collective, always concerned about its unity and about nurturing of the young specialists. Possessing great erudition and experience, A. A. Manukyan has become an outstanding director with high tech- nical and political training, broad outlook, and organizational abilities. He actively participates in solving all fundamental problems of designing. In 1958 A. A. Manukyan visited Yugoslavia and in 1965 Sweden to exchange experience. In 1962 he was the expert on the design of the hydropower station on the Argesol River in Rumania. A. A. Manukyan daily realizes the resolutions of the party and government on the development of power in our country and skillfully directs the work of the collective of the department toward the fulfillment of the produc- tion plan and introduction of new technology and progressive methods in the research and design of hydraulic struc- tures. The activity of the engineer and director is always combined with active social work, and he has been elected three times as deputy of the Erevan city council. For active participation in the development of water power, A. A. Manukyan has been awarded two orders of the Red Banner of Labor, the "Badge of Honor," medals, and three Diplomas of the Supreme Council of Armenia SSR. In 1958 he was awarded the title of Honored Builder of Armenia SSR.
