5 Reasons Why You Aren’t Filling All the

Compounds You Can Handle

1. Youʼre trying to see the doctor without making an appointment. Most physicians (actually people in general) are very busy. Dropping in on a physician without an appointment can be very risky. You may be able to wait and see them, but how valuable is your time? Do you really want to wait to see a doctor for an unspecified amount of time only to have to rush through your presentation? Why not make an appointment for breakfast, lunch, coffee or my favorite the “after lunch and bring dessert” meeting. This way you will know how much time you will get with the doctor and be able to prepare for the meeting accordingly.

2. You are talking more about yourself, your compounds and your pharmacy than you are about their practice. I have done hundreds of doctor luncheons and meetings and one thing Iʼve noticed is that pharmacists have so much information in their heads that they want to get out to the doctors. However, the doctors want to know two things: “why are you here?” and “what can you do to help me?” Notice I didnʼt even say who are you? They donʼt really care who you are until they realize you may be able to help them. Spend your time getting to know them. Ask them questions about their practice and take many notes. Once you have learned what they need, you can begin to talk about the compounds you make that can help them and their patients.

3. Youʼre giving them lists of too many compounds. Lists of compounds that the doctor doesnʼt understand or know how to write can be overwhelming. I advocate learning the practice and presenting the compounds that will be most useful to that doctorʼs practice. Presenting five or more compounds at once can be too much for a doctor unfamiliar with compounding. Build the relationship and over time you can present compounds from the list to your doctors.

4. You donʼt have an easy way for your doctors to prescribe your compounds. This goes along with giving out lists. The lists are usually written in terms of chemical names and percentages or what I call “pharmacist-ese”. Most doctors donʼt think in terms of chemical names so this is one extra step the doctor has to make in order to write a prescription for you. Make it easy for them. Make up prescription sheets that only have the compounds you discussed in your meeting, complete with amounts to dispense and directions on how to take the medication.

5. You donʼt follow up. You have worked so hard to get this doctor to send you patients. Now take the time to follow up with both the doctor and the patient to make sure the compound is working as expected. If itʼs not working as expected, tweak it and if it is, get a testimonial from the patient to use on your website and other marketing material. Then let the doctor know how the compound is working as well.
