CALLED TO SERVE

The status of God’s beloved Son is not one he clings to. It is one he shares. All of us are called to be sons and daughters of God. In Jesus, we can all claim God’s favor. The second reading makes this clear. Here we read of the baptism of Corne-lius and his household. Peter’s speech recalls the anointing of Jesus by the Holy Spirit and the great power that swept through Israel and onto the doorstep of the Gentile Corne-lius.

As for his household, so for us. There is an end to our work on earth, to our baptismal vocation and the honorable work we do. But there is no end to the saving life given to us through baptism. There is no end to the life of the children of God; there is no end to God’s compassion, which we know in Christ Jesus. There is no end to our status as chosen and beloved peo-ple of God. Because of Jesus’ life, death, and resurrec-tion, we are forever among those on whom God’s favor

Do you know an inactive Catholic?

Our parish is looking to reach out to inactive Catholics using a program called: Catholics Reaching Out. This initiative is intended to reach out to the son or daugh-ter, friend or relative who has been inactive and who is now feeling they are missing something to welcome them back to the Church family.

An invitation (available on the table in the vestibule) has been prepared which you can give to inactive Catholics you know. The invitation is to six weekly discussion sessions beginning this Monday, 13 January at 7:00 PM. You are welcome to accompany the person(s) to any or all of the sessions.

Diabetes Conversation Map Series

Have you been diagnosed with diabetes or pre-diabetes? Are you interested in learning more about your condition and how to manage it most effectively?

National Migration Week: 5–11 January

Our parish will observe this annual week through the month of January with 2 different activities.

Socks For Blistered Feet

One of the outreach actions of the Kino Border Initiative and No More Deaths organization is to provide migrants with white socks. This helps to contain any infection from the blisters on their feet. During the month of January, which begins with an observation of National Migration Week, we will have a box in the vestibule for donations if you would be willing to help.

A Journey for Justice

Sunday, 26 January

Our parish will lead a pilgrimage in solidarity with migrants, immigrants and refugees at the San Pedro Chapel (5230 E. Fort Lowell Road – between N. Swan & N. Craycroft) on Sunday, 26 January.

There are two starting options for the pilgrimage:

Start Option A: 2:00 PM – Journey to the Chapel along the Rillito River Walk beginning at the Swan Road parking area.

Start Option B: 3:00 PM – Journey to the Chapel from the shrine located on the chapel property.

Meeting together at the shrine on the Chapel property, pilgrims of both groups will process to several stations join-ing in prayerful solidarity with those who seek a better life for themselves and their families. The procession and prayer together will culminate in the San Pedro Chapel – a place of worship built to provide spiritual care for migrant workers.

Durante el mes de enero, que empieza con la Semana Nacional del Migran-te, tendremos Una caja en el Vestíbulo de la iglesia para recibir sus donativos, por si ustedes deseen participar en esta iniciativa.

Un viaje por la Justicia

Domingo, 26 de enero

El domingo 26 de enero, nuestra parroquia estará al frente de una peregrinación en solidaridad con los migrantes, inmigrantes y refugiados, en la Capilla de San Pedro (5230 E. Fort Lowell Road – entre N. Swan & N. Craycroft).

Hay dos opciones para iniciar la peregrinación:

Empezando la Opción A: las 2:00 PM – Viaje a la capilla a lo largo del río Rillito caminando a partir de la zona de aparcamiento de la calle Swan.

Empezando la Opción B: las 3:00 PM – Viaje a la Capilla del santu-ario ubicado en la propiedad de la capilla.

Reunidos en la capilla del santuario en la propiedad, los peregrinos de ambos grupos procederán a varias estaciones unidos en solidaridad orante con los que buscan una vida mejor para ellos y sus familias. La procesión y la oración juntas culminarán en la Capilla de San Pedro – un lugar de culto construido para proporcionar cuidado espiritual para los trabajadores migrantes.

Centering Prayer Sessions

Centering Prayer is a method of contemplative prayer and medita-tion that seeks to establish a connection with God through interior silence, and to maintain the connection by consenting to God’s presence and action during the time of prayer. Ideally, the prayer will reach a point where participants become detached from their thoughts and attain stream of consciousness.

From Christmas Time into Ordinary Time

With the feast of the Baptism of the Lord, we bring to a close our Church’s celebration of Christmas Time, and we transition into Ordinary Time. Each Liturgical Year has two blocks of Ordinary Time, one in the winter between Christ-mas Time and Lent, and the other in summer and fall, from the Feast of Pentecost through the Feast of Christ the King.

While naming these blocks of time Ordinary, our Church doesn’t mean it is a time with nothing to celebrate. Rather,

Ordinary is used to refer to ordinal – that is, counted – time. For 33 or 34 weeks (dependent upon how the calendar year runs), we don’t cele-brate a specific aspect of the Mystery of Christ, but the Mystery of Christ in all its aspects sys-tematically reading through the gospel of the

year (Matthew, this year) hearing Jesus’ teachings, of his miracles, of his revelations of who our God is.

This year, the first block of Ordinary Time will be longer than usual as Ash Wednesday does not occur until 5 March. In addition to celebrating various dimensions of Jesus’ life each Sunday, various things will be happening in our parish. Here are some upcoming events of which to be aware and to put on your calendar.

During Lent, we will host the 3rd year in the series Cele-brating the Eucharist.

Del Tiempo Navideño al Tiempo Ordinario

Con la fiesta del Bautismo del Señor, llevamos a su fin la celebración de nuestra Iglesia del Tiempo Navideño, y pasamos al tiempo ordinario. Cada año litúrgico tiene dos bloques de tiempo ordinario, uno en invierno entre la Navidad y la Cuaresma, y otra en el verano y el otoño, de la fiesta de Pentecostés hasta la Festivi-dad de Cristo Rey.

Mientras nombramos estos bloques de tiempo Ordinario, en nuestra iglesia no significa que sea un tiempo sin nada que celebrar. Más bien, Ordinario se utiliza para referirse al ordinal – es decir, Tiempo-contado. Durante 33 o 34 semanas (dependiendo de cómo se ejecuta el año natural), no celebramos a los aspectos específicos del misterio de Cristo, pero el Misterio de Cristo en todos sus aspectos leyendo en forma sistemática la lectura a través del evangelio del año (Mateo, este año) oyendo las enseñanzas de Jesús, de sus milagros, de sus revela-ciones de quien es nuestro Dios.

Este año, el primer bloque de tiempo ordinario será más largo de lo habitual ya que el Miércoles de Ceniza será hasta el 5 de marzo. Además de celebrar diversas dimensiones de la vida de Jesús, cada domingo, sucederán varias cosas en nuestra parroquia. Kindergarten (5 yrs) and First to Sixth Grade

If your child is not in a Catholic school, he/she should be in a Religious Education Program. As we begin the New Year, we open our classes to new students through January. Forms to register your child in our religious education program can be obtained on the table in the vestibule or at the Parish office during regular business hours. Classes start on Sundays at 11:15 AM and end at 12:45 PM.

If you are already registered you don't need to register again. For more information please contact Becki at 795 1633 ext 104.

Catecismo – Educacion Religiosa Kinder (5 años) y Primero a Sexto grados

Si su hijo/a no asiste a escuela católica, el/ella deberá entrar a un Programa de Educación Religiosa. Al empezar el Año Nuevo, en enero iniciamos las clases para nuevos alumnos. Las formas para inscribir a su niña/o en nuestro programa de educación religiosa se pueden obtener en la mesa del vestíbulo o en la oficina parro-quial durante el horario regular de la misma. Las clases em-pezarán los domingos a las 11:15 AM, y terminarán a las 12:45 PM.

Anointing of the Sick

This sacrament is intended for persons who are at least of Catechetical age (7 years) and are preparing for surgery, or are afflicted with a serious, (though temporary) or chronic ill-ness (be it physical or mental), or are elderly. It may be celebrated individually by making an appointment with a priest of the parish. If possible, other family members and/or friends should accompany the person during the celebration. The celebration may occur at the parish, at the person’s home, in the hospital or nursing care facility. If you or a family member are anticipating hospitalization for an illness or surgery it is best to arrange for the celebration of the sacrament before being admitted to the hospital. Please contact one of the priests of the parish to make an appoint-ment (795-1633).

Periodically during the year, the sacrament may be cele-brated in a communal liturgical rite in the church either during a Sunday Mass or at another time.

The Last Rites

When it is clear that the person is dying, the Church celebrates The Last Rites and not an Anointing of the Sick. The Last Rites are prayers of commendation (commending the person to the Lord’s eternal care) and Viaticum (communion as “food for the journey”) if it is possible for the person to receive communion. Please contact one of the priests of the parish (795-1633) to make arrangements for celebrating these rites.

Pastoral Visits when in the Hospital

If you are (or a family member is) in a hospital or rehabilitation facility and would like a pastoral visit, contact the hospital’s Pastoral Services. They in turn will contact us if, in addition to their services, you wish someone from the parish to visit you.

Unción de los Enfermos

Este sacramento está destinado a personas mayores de la Catequesis (7 años), y se están preparando para cirugía, o padecen de una en-fermedad grave, (aunque temporal) enfermedad seria o crónica ( ya

sea física o mental), o son de edad avanzada. Se puede celebrar de forma individual al hacer una cita con un sacerdote de la par-roquia. Si es posible, otros miembros de la familia y/o amigos deben acompañar a la persona durante la celebración. La cele-bración puede ocurrir en la parroquia , en el hogar de la persona, en el hospital o centro de atención de enfermería. Si usted o un miembro de la familia está anticipando la hospitalización por una

enfermedad o cirugía, es mejor hacer arreglos para la celebración del Sacramento, antes de ser admitido en el hospital. Por favor, póngase en contacto con uno de los sacerdotes de la parroquia para hacer una cita (795-1633).

Periódicamente durante el año, el sacramento puede celebrarse en un rito litúrgico comunitario en la iglesia, ya sea durante una misa del domingo o en otro momento.

La Extrema Unción

Cuando está claro que la persona se está muriendo, la Iglesia celebra la extrema unción y no una Unción de Enfermos. Los últimos ritos son oraciones de alabanza (encomendando a la persona al cuidado eterno del Señor) y el Viático (comunión como "alimento para el camino"), si es posible que la persona reciba la comunión. Visitas Pastorales cuando están en el Hospital

Que si usted, o un miembro de su familia, está en el hospital o en un lugar de rehabilitación, y desea una visita pastoral, co-muníquense a los Servicios Pastorales del hospital para solicitar-la. Ellos nos avisarán si, además de sus servicios, usted desea que lo visite alguien de su parroquia.
