Humility

Today’s reading from Sirach celebrates what will be-

come the theme of today’s Gospel: humility. Pride causes us to demand from others an exalted estimate of our status, but

humility allows us to see things more clearly. It allows us a broader perspective. Humility promises us the favor of God

and the love of those who know us.

The second reading is a study in contrasts: the giving of the Law on Mount Sinai and the giving of salvation on

Mount Zion. The Law’s appearance is greeted with solemnity, mystery, even fear. But Christians are not to be afraid. Com-

ing to God’s mountain with Jesus, “the mediator of a new

covenant,” is a happy, exuberant experience.

The parable in today’s Gospel concerns the danger of

pride and the necessity of humility. The banquet setting, often

used by Jesus, is a symbol of heaven’s abundance and of the fulfillment of God’s promise. The parable is not simply good

Humildad La lectura de hoy del Eclesiástico ensalza lo que será el tema del Evangelio de hoy: la humildad. El orgullo hace que exijamos a los demás que exalten nuestro estatus, pero la humildad nos lleva a ver las cosas más claramente. Nos brinda una perspectiva más amplia. La humildad nos garantiza el fa-vor de Dios y el amor de las personas que nos conocen. La segunda lectura es un estudio de contrastes: por un lado la entrega de las Tablas de la Ley en el Monte Sinaí, y por otro la entrega de la salvación en el monte Sión. La primera fue recibida con solemnidad, misterio, hasta con temor. Pero los cristianos no deben temer. Subir al monte de Dios con Jesús, “el mediador de la nueva alianza” es una experiencia alegre y espléndida. La parábola en el Evangelio de hoy se refiere al peligro del orgullo y a la necesidad de la humildad. La imagen de la fiesta del banquete, con frecuencia usada por Jesús, es un símbolo de la abundancia del cielo y del cumplimiento de las promesas de Dios. La parábola no es simplemente un buen consejo so-bre cómo evitar pasar una vergüenza; se trata de la salvación.

Another Carmelite assigned to our parish!

Internship in our Carmelite formation process is a period during which a Carmelite student lives in a Carmelite community and participates in the ministry of the community. Brother Jorge Demetrio Mon-terroso-Mérida, O.Carm. will be doing his internship with us. Here is a brief introduction to Brother Jorge.

I was born in Guatemala City in 1976. I’m the second of four children (Sophia, Marylu, and Luis). My par-ents are Jorge and Angelica. I believe that my par-ents have been my best example and they’re the biggest influence I have had in my life. Before joining the Carme-lites, I studied Computer Science. Spiritually I owe “a lot” to reading some books that recount the life of St. John of the Cross and St. Teresa of Jesus. My first contact with Carmelite spirituality took place in 1994, when the book entitled “San Juan de la Cruz, An Inti-mate Biography” came into my hands. Ten years later, in my eagerness to learn more Carmelite spirituality, and us-ing the Internet, I made my first direct contact with the Carmelite Order through their website. In 2007, I had the opportunity to visit the Carmelite Communities of El Salvador and Mexico, the same year I applied to become a pre-novice student to the Carmelite Order. My training as a Carmelite allowed me to meet and live in Carmelite Houses in Mexico, Peru, El Salvador, and the United States. My favorite biblical quote is taken from Psalm 51(50): “And you love the truth at the very heart of being; inside me you inculcate instill wisdom”.

Toiletry Drive for Migrants & Refugees In support of Catholic Community Services’ Mi-grants & Refugee Program here in our diocese, we will host a Toiletry Drive over the next 4 weekends. All are invited to bring in various toilet-ries (soap, shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, etc.). Items collected will be given to CCS to be shared with the various migrant and refugee families they serve.

Parishioner working on Eagle Scout Rank

Alex Lehman is a St. Cyril parishioner and at-tended St. Cyril School. He is a Boy Scout in Troop 007 based at St. Thomas Parish, and has planned an Eagle Scout Project to benefit St. Cyril School. A fundraiser to support this project will be held on Friday, September 13th at 5:30 PM in the meeting hall of St. Thomas Parish (5150 N Valley View Road, 85718). Food will include a delicious Mexican dinner and a fun ice cream dessert. Cost is $15 per person, or $50 for a family of four or more. Dentro de nuestro proceso de formación la etapa de In-ternado es un período en donde los estudiantes Carmeli-tas viven en una comunidad y participan del ministerio ejercido en la misma. El hermano Jorge Demetrio Mon-terroso-Mérida, O.Carm. estará realizando esta etapa de formación con nosotros. Adjunto encontrarán una breve presentación del caminar del hermano Jorge. Nací en la ciudad de Guatemala del año 1976, soy el se-

gundo de cuatro hijos (Sophía, Marylú, y Luis). Mis padres son Jorge y Angélica. Considero que mis padres han sido mi mejor ejemplo y la mayor influencia que he tenido en mi vida. Antes entrar los Carmelitas, estudiaba de Informática. Espiritualmente me debo «en gran medida» a la lectura de algunos libros que narran la vida de San Juan de la Cruz y de Santa Teresa de Jesús. Mi primer contacto con la espiritualidad Carmelita tuvo lugar en el año 1994, cuando llegó a mis manos el libro titulado: San Juan de la Cruz, Biografía Íntima. Diez años después, en mi afán de conocer más la espiritualidad Carmelita, y valiéndome para ello del Internet, establecí mi primer contacto directo con la Orden del Carmen a través de su página de Internet. En 2007, tuve la oportunidad de poder visitar las Comunida-des Carmelitas de El Salvador y de México; ese mismo año soli-cité mi ingreso como estudiante pre-novicio a la Orden del Car-men. Mi formación Carmelita me ha permitido conocer y vivir en Comunidades Carmelitas de México, Perú, El Salvador, y Estados Unidos. Mi cita bíblica preferida es tomada del Salmo 51(50): “Y tú amas la verdad en lo íntimo del ser, en mi interior me inculcas sabiduría”.

We have begun this year’s series of classes. Children in Kin-dergarten through 6th grade meet on Sundays from 11:15 AM until 12:45 PM.

In addition, those students in 7th, 8th or 9th grade who have not celebrated First Reconcilia-tion and/or First Eucharist meet on Sundays at this time.

Students in 7th or 8th grade who have cele-brated First Reconciliation and First Eucharist and who now want to prepare for confirmation meet with the Youth Ministry Group on Wednes-day evenings (see below).

Please note that in order to enter into sacramental preparations, students must have completed a full year of regular attendance in Religious Education. Last Day to Reg-ister for this year is September 15th.

Ya hemos iniciado las clases de este año. Los niños desde Kinder hasta 6° grado se reúnen los domingos de 11:15AM hasta las 12:45 PM.

También, los alumnos de 7°, 8° y 9° grados que aún no han celebrado su Primera Reconciliación y/o Primera Eucaristía, se reúnen los domingos a la misma hora.

Los alumnos de 7° y 8° grados que ya celebraron su Primera Reconciliación y/o Primera Eucaristía y que ahora desean prepararse para su Confirmación, se reúnen con el Ministerio del Grupo Juvenil los miércoles por la noche (ver abajo).

Favor de notar que con el fin de entrar a preparaciones sa-cramentales, los estudiantes deben haber terminado un año completo de asistencia regular en Educación Religiosa. El 15 de septiembre es el último día de inscripción para este año.

El domingo, 1 de septiembre no clases de Educación Religiosa es un fin de semana libre.

This year, Bishop Kicanas is scheduled to celebrate Confirmation

in our parish on Tuesday, November 26th. In preparation for this, we will be offering a preparation series

in English for adult Catholics (18 years or older) who were baptized and have received

First Communion but have not been con-firmed. If you haven’t been confirmed, and

would like to celebrate this sacrament,

Sacrament Preparations for Adults

This year our parish will offer a series of classes for Spanish speaking adults (18 years or older) who have been baptized as

Catholics but have not celebrated one or more of the following sacraments: First Penance, Confirmation and First Commun-

ion. The preparation series will begin this fall and run

through the spring of 2013 In conjunction with this series, we will also be offering

Spanish speaking couples who are married civilly but not in the Church, the opportunity to prepare to celebrate the Sacra-

ment of Matrimony. If one or both of the married couple

needs to celebrate one of the above sacraments in preparation for having their marriage blessed, they should plan on partici-

pating in the above series. More information about the series and how to register will be in future bulletins, or you can call

Preparación Sacramental para Adultos

Este año nuestra parroquia ofrecerá una serie de clases para adultos hispanoparlantes (de 18 en adelante) quienes han sido bautizados como católicos, pero les falta uno o más de los siguientes sacramentos: primera reconciliación; comfirma-ción; primera comunión. Las clases comenzarán este octoño y terminarán a fines de la primavera de 2014.

Junto con esta serie de clases ofreceremos también, a parejas hispanoparlantes quienes están casados por lo civil mas no por la iglesia, la oportunidad para preparar para celebrar el sacramento de matrimonio. Si a uno o a ambos de la pareja les falta el celebrar uno de los sacramentos mencionados ar-riba, deben hacer planes de asistir las clases de preparación sacramental, para que se pueda bendecir el matrimonio.
