3D DESIGN

If you have an ambition for making contemporary design led products, one of our 3D Design pathways could be perfect for you, whether your choice is Crafts, Ceramics or Contemporary Jewellery. At the very beginning of your journey as a first year you have a great opportunity to explore all three pathways because you share a common year. This really helps you to confidently decide which specialist area or pathway is best for you in your quest to become a designer/maker. One of the great advantages of our 3D Design course is that it encourages you to experience a breadth of materials and techniques including digital and traditional aspects of designing and making.

Perhaps you see yourself as a craft jeweller, creating exquisite bespoke pieces in your own specialist workshop – or designing contemporary jewellery and accessories for mainstream high street chains.

Then again, your passion could lie in ceramics, and you’d love to call on a wide range of skills to create everything from finely detailed artefacts and tableware to bold, contemporary designs.

Angela Atkinson and Rajesh Gogna, Joint Award Leaders

We believe that when it comes to 3D Design, we offer some of the best training around. Experts agree with us too. In 2010, external examiners said: “The quality of the teaching and learning methods are good. The team is extremely committed

and responsive to students’ needs. They have a range and breadth of experience and skills, which they bring to the content and delivery of the curriculum.” Throughout your studies, you’ll gain practical knowledge and a repertoire of skills… a ‘designer toolkit’, if you like, of techniques and processes all to help you make your mark in the world of design.

WORLD OF WORK FACILITIES

We believe in giving you practical, hands-on training to prepare you for the world of work. That’s why our 3D workshops are superbly equipped. We’ve got everything you’d expect to see in a working studio: lathes, jigsaws, rapid prototyping machines, industry-standard design software, laser cutters, 3D printing, fine metalworking tools, mould preparation and casting equipment, and more. In short, we’ll make sure you’re properly trained in traditional hand-making, machine manufacture and modern digital technology.

A DEGREE OF CHOICE

We understand that not everyone can – or wants to – commit to full-time study. That’s why, although our 3D Design degrees normally take three years to complete, you can always opt to study part-time, over as long as 4-6 years.

CLOSE TIES WITH INDUSTRY

Wedgwood, Dudson, Moorland Pottery… we’ve built strong relationships across the 3D Design industry, including Stoke-on-Trent’s globally-famous pottery companies. We also work closely with the Crafts Council, the professional body dedicated to making the UK the best place to make, see, collect and learn about contemporary craft. All of that means we can train you in the very latest knowledge and industry practice, as well as improving your graduate employability. We arrange guest lectures by leading experts in ceramics, crafts and jewellery, and we organise visits to cultural events such

as the Maison & Objet Design Show and the Goldsmiths’ Fair. No wonder then that our students have won national awards at national events including: The New Designers, the Debenhams Future of Design Competition, Goldsmiths’ Company Precious Metal Bursary and Pewter Live!

LEARN FROM THE EXPERTS

Study 3D Design with us and you’ll learn from some of the leading specialists in the ceramics, crafts and jewellery fields. Rajesh Gogna, joint Award Leader, teaching on the Contemporary Jewellery and Fashion Accessories course, has been made a Freeman of the Goldsmiths’ Company in recognition of his work, as well as being given the Freedom of the City of London. Angela Atkinson, joint Award Leader, is an experienced ceramic designer/maker, with many significant commercial successes in retail markets, both nationally and internationally. She is passionate about her role as a designer and as an educator believing in the importance and relevance of the engagement and dialogue between education and industry. Sarah Thirwell is a senior lecturer on the course. She is a contemporary craft/designer maker, successfully producing a range of handmade design led products for the bespoke and commercial markets.

INSPIRED TEACHING

Whichever course you choose, you’ll spend your first year exploring ceramics, metal, wood and plastics through short projects. This allows you to broaden your creative experience and decide which of our 3D Design areas you’d like to specialise in. During your second year you’ll look at all sorts of different approaches to designing and making 3D pieces. Then, in the third year, you’ll take on a large individual project in your chosen subject. You’ll learn through a variety of projects, competitions, lectures, seminars, workshops and e-learning. You’ll also have a Personal Tutor who’ll be on hand to assist with both your academic and personal development.

CAREER CHOICES

Our 3D Design graduates go on to achieve great things, thanks in no small part to our course structure, which encourages you to specialise in one area of 3D Design, whilst developing valuable transferable skills for the job market. Lots of our graduates have set up their own businesses as designer-makers. In Ceramics, several graduates have secured careers in the illustrious local ceramics industry or joined postgraduate courses, whilst some craft graduates have found jobs with organisations such as the Crafts Council and the V&A Museum.

“I chose to study 3D Design at Staffordshire University because I felt it offered me the opportunity to develop and explore my creative skills as a maker. I cameto the University as a mature student, having both studied and worked in the jewellery industry. Whilst on the course, I was able to integrate my knowledge and experience.

The tutors are experienced professionals who specialise in a range of creative disciplines and are always available to provide hands-on support. The technicalteam also do a fantastic job in helping students in all areas of their study.

3D Design does require dedication and persistence. At times it can also be quite challenging. However, if you are passionate about handcrafting, it definitely hasall the attributes to enrich your skills as a designer-maker, equipping you with the knowledge, guidance and support to develop into a creative professional.

I found 3D Design to be very rewarding, both on a personal and a professional level. Since leaving the University, I have set up my own business selling luxurylimited edition and bespoke pieces of jewellery. I feel my degree was a platform to help me move forward within a creative field that I am passionate about. I recommend this course to anyone who is serious about working as a handcrafting designer-maker.”

“I chose Staffordshire University after going to an Open Day and realising that the workshop facilities weren’t simply great, but were bigger than those at otheruniversities I’d visited! I also really liked the friendly feel of the place. The fact that the campus is close to a mainline train station was another major advantage.

Throughout my studies, the support I received from the lecturers and technicians was excellent. They were always available to help us learn new techniques and skills. Also, the tutorials were very useful and really helped my designs to develop.

I was fortunate enough to be able to work for a jeweller and wood turner both during and after graduation. This provided a tremendous insight into running a business as a designer-maker. I now run my own jewellery & silversmithing workshop and shop in the Manchester Craft and Design Centre and also create work for galleries and exhibitions.”

AT STAFFORDSHIRE UNIVERSITY, WE’RE COMMITTED TO INVESTING IN YOUR FUTURE – LITERALLY. OVER A PERIOD OF 18 MONTHS, WE’RE SPENDING MILLIONS OF POUNDS ON OUR UNIVERSITY CAMPUSES, SO WHEN YOU JOIN US, YOU’LL BE COMING TO A PLACE WITH EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO START OPENING DOORS AND BREAKING BOUNDARIES.

A BETTERCAMPUS

In recent years, our Stoke-on-Trent campus has undergone a massive transformation, with the students at the heart of our plans. From the amazing Science Centre to environmental improvements, we’re focused on building the best campus for our students.

But whilst it’s all well and good a university saying they care what students think, we’re putting our money where our mouth is.

This all stems from a decision to make Stoke-on-Trent the main campus of Staffordshire University. In 2016 the majority of students from our Stafford Computing and Technology courses will be

10

moving to the Stoke-on-Trent campus. So we’re making sure that when you arrive, you enter a university that is fit for purpose. One with a great mix of study and social spaces. One that feels safe and thrives on the friendly reputation we’ve built.

What we found was that a modern edge-of-city campus is ideal. Close enough to the city for the social life, but far enough away to focus on studying. Great transport links around the city, but also great spaces around the campus. The best of both worlds.

So, starting in Summer 2015, we’ll be working on the College Road and Leek Road sites of our Stoke Campus. We’ll be creating great social spaces and easy access between the Students’ Union, venues and teaching rooms. Bringing the best teaching facilities together with fantastic student areas – making it feel safe and easy to jump between your lectures and your life outside University.

As well as that, we’re also investing £12m in a new Computing and Games facility. This project, called Digital Kiln, will merge beautiful learning space with state-of-the-art technology to support all sorts of courses from Cyber Security to Games Design.

Healthcare Centres of ExcellenceThis redevelopment work isn’t just happening in Stoke-on-Trent though. Healthcare and Midwifery students won’t miss out with significant further investment in our Centres of Excellence in Stafford and Shrewsbury – adding new student spaces and learning resources to make these campuses totally self-contained and right up to date.

So, with all this to come, maybe it’s time you joined us at Staffordshire University?

This investment is continuing the work we’ve already started to create great social spaces and easy access between the Students’ Union, halls of residence, and other facilities. We’ve committed to doubling the investment that’s already started to create enhanced facilities. Come 2016, it’s going to have the buzz and the feel of the edge-of-city campus that students want.
