The University’s mission is to focus on issues of importance to Northern Australia and the tropics worldwide. As a result, our students gain an insight into the world’s most dynamic regions, as well as the knowledge and skills required for successful careers anywhere in Australia or internationally.

The quality of our teaching is recognised by the Office of Teaching and Learning, which has awarded our staff 39 national awards for teaching excellence over the past five years.

With a focus on practical experience, you will complete your degree ready for the workforce.

This is a defining factor for employers and, in 2013, we were awarded five stars by the Good Universities Guide for ‘success in getting a job’.

Our campuses in Cairns, Singapore and Townsville continue to grow, with over $200 million invested over the past few years in research and teaching and learning infrastructure. Our student mobility program offers students an opportunity to study for a semester in Singapore, a key business hub for Asia.

James Cook UniversityEducation for a confident future

James Cook University (JCU) offers students an outstanding education.

The Academic Ranking of World Universities positions JCU as a leading academic and research institution. JCU is placed in the top four per cent of more than 14,000 universities in the world. Among Asian and Pacific universities, JCU ranks in the top 100.

Like all the best universities, JCU has a five-star rating from the Good Universities Guide for graduate employment.

The University’s focus is to create a brighter future for life in the Tropics through graduates and discoveries that make a difference.

JCU’s main campuses are in the heart of the Tropics – Cairns, Singapore and Townsville.

Australian students are able to study for a semester in Singapore, the thriving business hub of South-East Asia.

Study centres are located in Mackay, Mount Isa, Thursday Island, Atherton and Malanda, and there is a campus in Brisbane operated by Russo Higher Education.

JCU offers a comprehensive range of courses, including medicine, dentistry, veterinary science, nursing, allied health, science, engineering, law, business, IT, multimedia journalism, education, creative arts, arts, languages and the social sciences. Many courses include tropical and global perspectives.

The world of the Tropics is attracting increasing global focus. And no wonder. The Tropics is home to more than 40 per cent of the earth’s population, and some 80 per cent of all species. The world’s Tropical zone is a powerhouse of promise, with economies in Tropical regions growing at a faster rate than the rest of the world.

The Australian campuses are located near the World Heritage listed Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and the rainforests of the Wet Tropics region. This unique environment attracts students from around the world.

The University values Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island cultures. JCU is proud to have a higher proportion of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students than many other universities.

Graduates are equipped with internationally recognised qualifications, leadership skills and self-reliance, and make valuable contributions to their professional fields, and to local and global communities.

The University’s namesake is Captain James Cook (1728-1779) the navigator and explorer. Students are encouraged to find inspiration in his legacy and to take up a personal challenge of exploration and discovery.

Study a Bachelor of Laws at JCU, follow your passion, and choose a specialty in Criminal, Property, Taxation, Corporate, Environmental, Business and Commercial or Family Law.

JCU lecturers are both experienced teachers and practising law professionals. Learn to be multi-skilled, versatile and ethical, gaining a strong knowledge of the rule of law and the role of law in social, economic, environmental and political contexts. Students learn how to deal innovatively with the complexities of local and global legal issues.

The JCU Law program provides a solid foundation in traditional law subjects, as well as a variety of interesting and relevant electives, providing the edge required to practise law in government, business or community sectors, at a local, state, national or international level. Engage in real-world legal practice, as each subject has a focus on the authentic tasks of legal practice.

Core subjects of the 4-year Law program deliver a foundation in Public Law, Private Law and community practice. In the final years, students choose electives from a variety of subjects that best reflect their interests and career aspirations. As an accredited professional degree, a JCU Law degree is the first step to admission as a legal practitioner in Queensland or elsewhere in Australia.

During your study, take up the opportunity to join JCU’s Law Student Associations on the Cairns and Townsville campuses. Membership will introduce you to a whole new fund of knowledge, and a network of friends and professional acquaintances to help and support you during your studies and future career. The associations encourage and organise a variety of social events and intellectual activities, including an annual ball and the Mayo Lecture Series.

What you will experienceThe academic team understands your goal is a degree and future career in law. This goal requires a high level of commitment and dedication and our team will support you in this challenging and rewarding course of study. The JCU Law program is designed to deliver the benefits of an intimate, flexible and connected learning environment, and to maximise the opportunity for contact with academic staff. You are encouraged to combine your studies with face-to-face and online discussions of your work with fellow students and academic staff.

JCU Law academics are committed professionals who regularly give their time and expertise to help community organisations in the region. They provide support and encouragement for you to do the same. Getting involved in community events and organisations is a great way to put into practice the skills you are developing in your studies.

The University regularly provides opportunities for students to engage with members of the profession – solicitors, barristers and the judiciary – and to undertake placements with legal practices and participate in moot courts and law debates.

A practical edgeAs a student of Law, you can take advantage of Work Integrated Learning (WIL) at JCU. This learning style gives you the opportunity to participate in practical and real-life learning activities that introduce fundamental elements of Law.

It is a great opportunity to gain valuable skills, establish professional relationships and develop a realistic view of how the legal system operates.

Joint degreesAdd to your expertise and employability by enrolling in a joint degree, resulting in two qualifications acquired over a slightly longer period of time than the completion of a single degree.

JCU’s Bachelor of Laws can be combined with:

• Bachelor of Arts (5-year duration)

• Bachelor of Business (5-year duration)

• One of many Bachelor of Science majors (5-year duration).

Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander student supportThe University employs full-time Indigenous Support Officers (ISSOs) to assist Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students with academic, financial and mentoring support. Scholarships and bursaries are available. Other resources include the Indigenous Tutorial Assistance Scheme (ITAS) and the national Indigenous Cadetship Scheme (ICS), providing supplementary wages and work experience.

Roxanne HartStudying Bachelor of Laws

Studying Law at JCU provided me with invaluable experiences, including work in a local law firm in the beginning of my second year. By mid-year, I was a permanent employee, and many of my fellow students had similar opportunities. In speaking with other law students, I found this opportunity to be uncommon among those studying at big city universities.

One of my degree highlights has been undertaking a native title internship at the North Queensland Land Council. I also completed a subject in environmental law and policy, which was fantastic, as its focus was legal issues associated with local tropical environments such as the Daintree and the Great Barrier Reef.

After my degree I hope to be a Judge’s Associate, and then focus on a career in Corporate Law.

Alan BirrellStudying Bachelor of Laws (Graduate Entry)

I want to combine an established career in the IT industry and an MBA, with Law study to provide me expertise in technology law.

I recognised that new technologies influence just about every aspect of our lives. Combining my substantial experience across the industry, including software development, cloud computing and e-commerce, with Law, gives me the exact career formula for what I want to achieve.

Fortunately JCU offers a graduate-level entry, 3-year degree in Law.

I really like JCU’s smaller size classes. They offer better interpersonal experience, and local industry professionals attached to the university provide great networking opportunities.

I intend to present an Honours dissertation addressing challenges facing the law and the legal profession by technological advancement.

Townsville is my hometown; so choosing to study at JCU meant that I could have the support of my family and close friends every step of the way. There’s a wonderful tightknit community at JCU and plenty of opportunities for extra-curricular activities.

I was interested in History and Politics, and with consideration for future employment, I chose to combine these areas of study with Law. It has given me a versatile skill set and really broadened my options.

I was selected to represent the University on the Global Voices youth delegation to the World Trade Organisation Public Forum in Geneva. Besides being a great opportunity to learn about international trade policy, it definitely has been a highlight of my studies.

At graduation I will have a qualification, and the knowledge and experience to take me anywhere in the world.

Depending on your particular specialisation in Science, you may be qualified to deal with environmental issues (both legal and scientific concerns), ethical dilemmas arising from genetic modifications, or even intellectual property concerns that may arise through research and development of new technologies or discoveries.

You will have a strong knowledge and understanding of legal principles and how to apply these to the scientific world. Your career prospects will be considerably enhanced by this joint degree.

Diane RuhlBachelor of Laws (Honours)

My study at JCU was the genesis of a rewarding career in the legal profession. Currently, I am a Senior Associate specialising in Family Law with BCK Lawyers in Townsville. I am also a sessional lecturer at the University, and the Vice President of the North Queensland Law Association.

I transferred to JCU after studying for a year in Brisbane and found the personal level of assistance inspiring. I am from Mackay, and the tropical campus felt like home.

JCU in collaboration with the Townsville Community Legal Service (TCLS) offered a practical subject, in which students attended TCLS and helped lawyers work on files and interview clients. I found this experience very valuable in gaining employment after graduation.

As a sitting member of the Townsville AFL Tribunal and a volunteer at the Townsville Community and Legal Service and Homeless Persons Legal Clinic, I have managed to extend my legal work into rewarding community service.

In 2011 I was surprised yet honoured to be named Queensland Emergent Women Lawyer of the year. This award was a result of my excellent education at JCU, a lot of hard work in my practice and my willingness to dedicate time to serve the legal concerns and needs of women.

AccommodationDeciding where to live

Your accommodation options while studying at JCU, will depend on availability, your budget and your individual preferences. Townsville and Cairns are large regional cities with a range of housing options for students.

JCU also facilitates accommodation for students who are on clinical placement as part of their Health Sciences degree at our study centres across northern Queensland.

Start looking ASAPThe JCU Accommodation Support Service facilitates the online application process for on-campus living in the colleges and halls on the Townsville campus. Competition is strong for this type of accommodation so it is best to submit your application and pay your registration fee early. You may wish to contact the colleges and halls directly and discuss their facilities first.

For accommodation options off campus, the Accommodation Support Service maintains a web database of private rental and share accommodation in houses, units, granny flats, full board and caretaker arrangements in both Cairns and Townsville.

Search these options and contact the accommodation provider directly via the Off-Campus Accommodation link at: www.jcu.edu.au/accommodation

Making a decisionHere are some things to think about when you are deciding where to live:

• Do you want to live with other students?

• Do you want to live on or off campus?

• If you want to live on campus, have you registered your interest as early as possible to avoid disappointment?

• Do you want to cook your own meals or have someone else cook for you?

• How much do the different housing options cost? What’s your budget?

• Do you want to walk to university?

What does it cost? Student halls and colleges on the Townsville campus offer full board, single room and share options, with a range of prices. An average price per week for a student room in a hall or college with full board (all meals provided) can range from $280 to $400. Rental and share accommodation in Cairns and Townsville can cost anywhere from $120 per week for a room in a share apartment or house.

Help with costsIf you have to move away from home to study and are from a disadvantaged background, Commonwealth Government Scholarships can assist with relocation and accommodation costs. For more information, visit: www.jcu.edu.au/scholarships

Homestay with a familyStaying with a local family in their home is another option that suits some students. There are also options for short-term housing arrangements. Visit the ‘homestay’ link on the JCU Accommodation website.
