Into the wide blue yonder

It’s quite common to talk about students moving through education, from one stage of schooling to the next and out into the world. But education itself must move too – move with the times, move beyond the confines of the walls of the classroom, or pages of a textbook and open up spaces for blue-sky thinking that allow students to imagine endless possibilities for a future not yet written.

Page 4: Education - Undergraduate Courses 2015

Monash graduates become leaders in teaching practice, public debate, policy development, and community action around the world.

That’s why we embed leadership into your course from the beginning. As well as helping you to become an expert in your field, every Monash student learns to lead. You will study units specifically designed to enhance your leadership skills and encourage innovative thinking. Because of this Monash-educated teachers are in high demand meaning we have consistently high graduate employment rates.

successful companies consistently rate Monash as a preferred university

Realise your own potential

Emmeline Be

With an almost perfect ATAR score of 99.85 Emmeline Be knew she could choose any course she wanted.

“I’ve always been passionate about education and teaching and can’t think of any better field to work in. It helps people realise their potential and pursue many more opportunities.”

In her fourth and final year, Emmeline completed her practicum in two different schools in Johannesburg, South Africa.

“It has been such a privilege to have taught in South Africa. I will always cherish the opportunity of getting to know the incredible students and people of South Africa, and teaching in a tiny portable classroom with fifty students scattered around the room with absolutely no resources. Being immersed into an entirely different cultural context has reinforced the fact that education is key to empowering individuals.”

Upon graduation, Emmeline landed a job at Balwyn High teaching accounting and commerce.

“I’ve just started my first teaching job, but my dream job would be setting up education programs for an NGO somewhere overseas, perhaps in Papua New Guinea, Vietnam or Tanzania.”

Focus on your passion

Ryan Lucas

“My studies have helped me learn more about other cultures. I’ve been given the chance to travel and work in unique places such as the Cook Islands and the Solomons. In the Solomons I worked with kids teaching cricket through a job with the Australian Youth Ambassadors for Development (AYAD).”

Ryan is currently completing his honours project off-campus while he works at a school in Alice Springs.

“My project will be about Sport, International Development and Physical Education.”

The Bachelor of Education (Honours)

The Bachelor of Education (Honours) is a four-year course3 that prepares you to be a leader in education. You can focus your studies in early childhood, primary or secondary education sectors – or a combination of these – and choose from a wide range of secondary teaching subjects, graduating with a highly-focussed, career-ready qualification.

Honours puts you ahead

The honours component of your degree is embedded into a four-year course so that — in an Australian first — you will graduate with an honours qualification whatever your chosen educational setting and whether you choose a single degree or a double degree course.

This means that when you graduate from Monash after four years you are ready to take a leading role in your chosen educational setting and teaching field.

It also means that if you choose to study for a fifth year — either immediately or at some time in the future — you will be able to qualify with an advanced master’s degree, putting you ahead of the game.

The Bachelor of Education (Honours) at Monash:

■■ offers eight specialisations preparing you to teach in different sectors and fields

■■ offers the opportunity to combine your studies with another discipline (in a double degree course)

■■ provides you with a higher level qualification than a standard bachelor’s degree in the same time as a standard Bachelor of Education

■■ prepares you to complete an advanced master’s in just one additional year

■■ gives a grounding in research and provides a direct pathway into research degree courses

Areas of specialisation

You can specialise to teach in the following education sectors and graduate with an award that reflects your expertise:

■■ Early Years Education (See page 14)

■■ Early Years and Primary Education (See page 16)

■■ Primary Education (See page 18)

■■ Primary and Secondary Education (See page 20)

■■ Primary and Secondary Special Education (See page 22)

■■ Primary and Secondary Health and Physical Education (See page 24)

■■ Secondary Health and Physical Education (See page 26)

■■ Secondary Education in a wide range of teaching subjects (See page 28)

The Monash advantage allows you to specialise in two educational sectors further broadening your career opportunities. Four of our specialisations allow you to do this, these include Early Years and Primary Education, Primary and Secondary Education, Primary and Secondary Special Education, and Primary and Secondary Health and Physical Education.

3 This is an accelerated course where you will be required to undertake more than the Standard Annual Load of 48 credit points in Year 2 and/or Year 3 in order to complete the course in four calendar years.

Start your education from your first day with the Bachelor of Education (Honours). Focus on a single sector (e.g. primary) or gain a dual-sector qualification (e.g. early years and primary).

Combine your studies in education with a second course such as science or arts, to build a qualification that is as diverse as your interests. A double degree course is studied concurrently, so you will graduate after four years with two degrees instead of one.

If you have completed a bachelor’s degree in another discipline you can become a teacher by completing the two-year Master of Teaching.

Gain professional accreditation

Our courses are accredited4 by:

■■ Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority (ACECQA)

■■ Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT)

This means when you graduate you have the education qualifications to be an early childhood educator or a registered teacher in Victoria.

If you want to teach interstate or overseas, you should check the registration requirements with local authorities.

Student Ambassador Program

Seize the opportunity to stand out by participating in our renowned Student Ambassador Program. You will develop a wide range of invaluable skills including leadership, teamwork, public speaking and group facilitation. Also, access professional development activities and receive mentoring from staff and formal recognition from the Dean – a great addition to your CV.

Pathways to further study

Once you complete the Bachelor of Education (Honours), you can choose from a range of postgraduate degrees to further enhance your expertise. And because you have already completed an honours degree, you will be able to complete an advanced master’s degree in just one more year. You can choose from:

■■ Master of Education

■■ Master of Leadership

■■ Master of Counselling

■■ Master of TESOL

■■ Master in Education for Sustainability

Double degree courses

The secondary specialisation must be taken as part of a double degree course and the primary specialisation may be taken as part of a double degree course. The design of these double degree courses mean you graduate with two degrees instead of one in the time normally taken for the single Bachelor of Education (Honours) course. This is because the discipline studies requirement of your education course is completed in the partner degree course.

How Monash courses are structured

At Monash, we let you choose how you study. We offer a range of courses that offer different professional outcomes. We’ll be there to guide you through all the possibilities, so you can graduate with an internationally recognised qualification that can take you anywhere.

Take advantage of our global perspective, exceptional facilities, world-class teachers and industry-based learning.

Range of majors

A comprehensive course is flexible and evolves as your interests develop in particular directions.

You can start with units from a range of study areas and through your choices progressively focus on one or two majors and minors.

Specialist focus

A specialist course offers you focus and depth through specialisation in your area of interest from the start of your studies.

Some undergraduate specialist courses are designed to prepare you to practise in a specified regulated profession upon graduation. Others concentrate on developing particular expertise but may be applicable to a broader range of careers options.

You will graduate with a degree that reflects your chosen specialisation.

Double degrees

A double degree course lets you gain skills in two different areas of interest such as arts and education or science and engineering.

This lets you tailor your qualification to fit your diverse interests and talents and doubles your options when you graduate.

Double degree courses can take up to two years less than if you took the two courses one after the other. This is because the electives from each degree course count towards the other.

You will graduate with two distinct degrees.

Professional entry graduate courses

Some courses at Monash prepare you for direct entry to a profession upon graduation with a bachelor’s degree.

However, you can also choose a professional entry postgraduate course after you have completed your bachelor’s degree that also prepares you for entry to a regulated profession. These are usually master’s degrees.

Fields where we offer professional entry courses for graduates include architecture, law, accounting, teaching and nursing. In some professional fields, including law, teaching and nursing, we offer you both options.

If you’d like to discuss your options call us on 1800 MONASH (666274) or email [email protected] and let us help you make your choice.

Qi Tai (Nicole)

“I have always had a passion for teaching children, particularly pre-schoolers, so that led me to study early childhood education. After finishing school at home in Malaysia, I chose to study at Monash University because of its good reputation, not just in Australia, but internationally. Studying at Monash has given me the opportunity to meet people from all over the world and make some great friends. My course definitely prepared me for employment – I was offered a job before I’d graduated – proving the point that Monash Education graduates are well sought after.”

Suzanne Boatto

“Raising three kids with disabilities has given me a real passion and insight for teaching special needs children. I’ve come to realise that there are not many teachers within our school system that really understand special education. I’m following my passion to make a difference in the lives of children, especially those with additional needs in our schools. Monash has a great reputation and the campus location was perfect for me.”

Professor Dawn Penney

Dawn Penney has recently joined the highly dedicated and experienced team of Health and Physical Educators at Monash. Her arrival at the faculty coincides with the launch of the brand new health and physical education specialisation, within the Bachelor of Education (Honours). “This newly developed specialisation will provide students with a foundation from which to take up a range of career opportunities in education, physical activity, health, sport and outdoor education settings. It will introduce them to key challenges and issues that educators and providers working in these areas face amidst rapidly changing worlds and in diverse communities. We will challenge students to apply new skills and knowledge in their own involvement as participants, teachers, coaches and leaders in education and community settings.”
