“It has been such a privilege to have taught in South Africa. I will always cherish the opportunity of getting to know the incredible students and people of South Africa, and teaching in a tiny portable classroom with fifty students scattered around the room with absolutely no resources. The Bachelor of Education (Honours)

The Bachelor of Education (Honours) is a four-year course3 that prepares you to be a leader in education. You can focus your studies in early childhood, primary or secondary education sectors – or a combination of these – and choose from a wide range of secondary teaching subjects, graduating with a highly-focussed, career-ready qualification.

Honours puts you ahead

The honours component of your degree is embedded into a four-year course so that — in an Australian first — you will graduate with an honours qualification whatever your chosen educational setting and whether you choose a single degree or a double degree course.

This means that when you graduate from Monash after four years you are ready to take a leading role in your chosen educational setting and teaching field.

It also means that if you choose to study for a fifth year — either immediately or at some time in the future — you will be able to qualify with an advanced master’s degree, putting you ahead of the game.

The Bachelor of Education (Honours) at Monash:

■■ offers eight specialisations preparing you to teach in different sectors and fields

■■ offers the opportunity to combine your studies with another discipline (in a double degree course)

The Monash advantage allows you to specialise in two educational sectors further broadening your career opportunities. Four of our specialisations allow you to do this, these include Early Years and Primary Education, Primary and Secondary Education, Primary and Secondary Special Education, and Primary and Secondary Health and Physical Education.

Start your education from your first day with the Bachelor of Education (Honours). Focus on a single sector (e.g. primary) or gain a dual-sector qualification (e.g. early years and primary).

Combine your studies in education with a second course such as science or arts, to build a qualification that is as diverse as your interests. A double degree course is studied concurrently, so you will graduate after four years with two degrees instead of one.

If you have completed a bachelor’s degree in another discipline you can become a teacher by completing the two-year Master of Teaching.

This means when you graduate you have the education qualifications to be an early childhood educator or a registered teacher in Victoria.

The secondary specialisation must be taken as part of a double degree course and the primary specialisation may be taken as part of a double degree course. The design of these double degree courses mean you graduate with two degrees instead of one in the time normally taken for the single Bachelor of Education (Honours) course. How Monash courses are structured

At Monash, we let you choose how you study. We offer a range of courses that offer different professional outcomes. We’ll be there to guide you through all the possibilities, so you can graduate with an internationally recognised qualification that can take you anywhere.

Range of majors

A comprehensive course is flexible and evolves as your interests develop in particular directions.

You can start with units from a range of study areas and through your choices progressively focus on one or two majors and minors.

Specialist focus

A specialist course offers you focus and depth through specialisation in your area of interest from the start of your studies.

Some undergraduate specialist courses are designed to prepare you to practise in a specified regulated profession upon graduation. Others concentrate on developing particular expertise but may be applicable to a broader range of careers options.

You will graduate with a degree that reflects your chosen specialisation.

Double degrees

A double degree course lets you gain skills in two different areas of interest such as arts and education or science and engineering.

This lets you tailor your qualification to fit your diverse interests and talents and doubles your options when you graduate.

Double degree courses can take up to two years less than if you took the two courses one after the other. This is because the electives from each degree course count towards the other.

You will graduate with two distinct degrees.

Professional entry graduate courses

Some courses at Monash prepare you for direct entry to a profession upon graduation with a bachelor’s degree.

However, you can also choose a professional entry postgraduate course after you have completed your bachelor’s degree that also prepares you for entry to a regulated profession. These are usually master’s degrees.

Fields where we offer professional entry courses for graduates include architecture, law, accounting, teaching and nursing. In some professional fields, including law, teaching and nursing, we offer you both options.

This new Honours structure provides essential core learning and the competencies required to be an effective educator as well as a pathway to further studies. It allows you to specialise in one of eight areas graduating with a focused qualification.

You undertake research units to develop knowledge of research principles and methods and the skills and capacity to design and conduct research with some independence. This increases your understanding of the complex field of education and may provide a pathway for research and further learning.
