February is the month of the most awaited event of the year - The District Conference . What a fantastic district conference we had!

The conference team led by Chairman Vijayakumar and secretary Fazal Mahmood and their entire team planned the activities so meticulously and executed with surgical precision. PDG Anil Agarwal who was the RI president Representative along with his gracious spouse Seema added colour to the festive atmosphere.

It started with the pre conference lunch with RIP Rep on 20th feb where the district leaders along with conference patrons and spouses had wonderful time exchanging notes. RIP Rep.Anil also attended the COG and addressed the RI Officers of the district

The Inaugural session was laced with some amazing speakers like Jaya Row of Vedanta Vision and RIDE Manoj Desai. The evening entertainment was a visual treat with Yakshagana, dances , songs and music the like of which we had never seen.

Second day was the day with multi activities. While the Rotarians day started at 7 in the morning, taking positions at the various NID centres and set the immunization work at motion and attended the conference at 10 am. They also fulfilled their responsibilities of electing the RID Nominating Committee member and alternate by ballot. The highlight of the day was the address by Olympian and Ace badminton star Saina Nehwal. Rotarians were overwhelmed by the announcement that Saina agreed to be the brand ambassador for the TEACH program of Rotary India Literacy Mission.

My dear Light Up Rotary Teamates, Successful District conference was only one of the milestones we had to cross. We are here to deliver much more in terms of membership and contribution to Foundation. Let us gear up to achieve our set goals for the year.

We chartered yet another new club, Rotary Uttarahalli on the 6th of February. 3 more new clubs have been sent for chartering. There are many more clubs who have planned extension. Now is the time to fulfill that dream. Yes it is a very special privilege and recognition to extend in the year when the top priority of the Rotary International President is to grow in Membership. Shailaja and I are one with you in realizing the Rotary spirit of the year 'Light Up Rotary'

DISTRICT GOVERNOR’S MESSAGE

In Rotary, we have the opportunity to build bonds of friendship with fellow Rotarians around the world. And once a year, at our international convention, we have the chance to get together with all of our Rotary friends, to share new ideas, plan new service, and just have fun.

What better way to celebrate the end of the 2014-15 Rotary year, and Light Up Rotary with your friends, than to travel together to the 106th annual Rotary International Convention in São Paulo, Brazil? Whether you have never been to a convention before or are an experienced convention goer, this will be one you won't want to miss. Preregistration pricing ends on 31 March, so plan now for the biggest Rotary party of the year.

The convention will begin on Saturday, 6 June, and after the opening ceremony there will be a traditional Brazilian Carnival party and a Samba School Parade at the Anhembi Sambadrome. Even if you think you have no rhythm or can't carry a tune, you will find yourself dancing, singing, and laughing all night long. The party and parade will feature the bright colors, feathers, and sequins of Carnival costumes as well as the sights and sounds of samba, the Afro-Brazilian music and dance, and the delicious food and drinks of São Paulo.

On Monday night, Ivete Sangalo, winner of two Latin Grammy Awards, will entertain Rotarians. And every evening of the convention, Rotary Restaurant Nights will let you enjoy discounts in the culinary capital of Latin America. Savor fish from the Amazon, sushi with a Latin flair, Brazilian beef, and other offerings from some of São Paulo's 30,000 restaurants and bars. Admission to several museums in São Paulo, including the excellent soccer museum, will also be free with your convention badge.

Brazil reflects a diversity almost as great as Rotary's: Paulistanos, as the people of São Paulo are known, have created a lively culture with influences from all over the world. One of the highlights of any Rotary convention is always hospitality night, where you can get to know local Rotarians. Monday night is your chance to experience the paulistano lifestyle with the Rotarians of Brazil – but be sure to book early, as numbers are limited.

In Rotary, service and friendship go hand in hand. As you focus on the work of this Rotary year, I ask you not to lose sight of the importance of international friendship, and to register for the São Paulo convention now, at www.riconvention.org.

RI PRESIDENT'SMESSAGE

2 The magic of Rotary is that it allows ordinary people to do extraordinary things. - Wilfrid J Wilkinson, RI President 2007-08

Now that the first year of the new grant model has been completed, it's time to see how it's working. One of the most positive outcomes is that more clubs and districts have banded together to implement larger, more sustainable projects. Our Rotary Foundation funded 488 district grants worth a total of $23.5 million and 868 global grants worth $47.3 million.

The Trustees are mindful of their fiduciary duty to ensure that Foundation funds are spent wisely. To help achieve this, clubs and districts have the support of The Rotary Foundation Cadre of Technical Advisers. These are Rotarian volunteers who have been vetted as specialists in one or more areas of focus, or in financial audits. Last year,

TRUSTEE CHAIR'S MESSAGE FIRST LADY SPEAKS!

I am sure you will all agree that the District Conference was amazing and definitely will remain in our mind for quite some times to come. Attending few of the preparatory meetings was a great learning experience for me. The hard work put in by each and every chairman culminated in a conference of substance in terms of wonderful speakers, great entertainment, sumptuous food

and extraordinary fellowship. Let me very specially recognize the team work displayed by my dear dear First Ladies Forum group who took charge of the first days program of organizing a rousing welcome for the VIPs with diyas , folk dances and drums. First ladies took pride in greeting each conference delegate with special home made chocolates. The VIP guests, RI Representative Anil Agarwal and his spouse Seema were adorable couple who conversed freely with every Rotarian.

It looks every successful program prompts us to do something more. We the First Ladies are all set to celebrate the International Women's day in a big way at R V Teachers College on the 7th March. In Rotary there is never a moment of dullness. Let us have lots of fun and fellowship while doing service to the needy.

Shailaja Manjunath

First Lady, RID 3190

on behalf of the Trustees, these volunteers carried out more than 153 assignments. Forty-four were technical (desk) reviews prior to funding approval, and 68 were mandatory on-site screenings for larger projects, either before approval or during the projects' implementation. The cadre also conducted 41 audits of projects and districts.

We have learned that some sponsors of global grants have struggled with needs assessments, sustainability, and monitoring and evaluation. This is where the cadre can be of practical assistance, so its members have been asked to increase their availability to grant sponsors from the start of the application process. Clubs and districts that sponsor grants can access this assistance by contacting their regional grants officer.

We are looking to add volunteers to our cadre in all areas of focus and in auditing. If you are interested in joining, email [email protected] for more information.

The aim of the Trustees is to make the new grant model as user-friendly as possible to clubs and districts.

110 Years Of RotaryCelebrating

The "ROTARY E-CLUB OF BANGALORE, DISTRICT 3190" celebrated "ROTARY DAY - 2015" by showcasing the humanitarian work of Rotary amidst multi-colour, shooting jets of water swaying to melodious music at a public water fountain in Bangalore.

The spectacular event commemorating the 110th anniversary of Rotary International was witnessed by large family crowds of the city.

On 23 February 1905, Paul Harris and three friends gathered for what would become known as the first Rotary Club meeting. Harris's desire for camaraderie among business associates grew into an international network of 1.2 million volunteers who work to improve health, alleviate poverty, and promote peace. Over 110 years, Rotary members have created access to health and education, empowered communities, supported peace building initiatives, pushed polio to the brink of eradication and improved lives around the world.

In 1945, representatives of 50 countries met in San Francisco at the United Nations Conference on International Organization to draw up the United Nations Charter. Rotary International was invited by the Department of State of United States of America to send consultants to the United Nations Conference at San Francisco in May, 1945. In all, eleven Rotarians served in one or the other of these capacities.

The first meeting of the UN took place in London on the 16th January 1946, hosted by District 13 at the Caxton Hall, presided over by RI President Tom Warren, who declared it to be the 'touchstone for a gesture of international goodwill unique in the history of Rotary'.

This relationship established between the United Nations Organization and Rotary started at the chartering of UNO is continuing up till now - from San Francisco to New York City. The month of November is designated as 'The Rotary Foundation Month' by Rotary International. It starts with 'Rotary UN Day' at the United Nations on1st November at New York.

Rotary holds the highest consultative status offered to a nongovernmental organization by the United Nations' Economic and Social Council, which oversees many specialized UN agencies. Celebration of 'Rotary UN Day' indicates the importance and respect Rotary International has gained all over the world because of its humanitarian service projects, especially its thrust area of Polio Eradication.

21st & 22nd Feb 2015

The Inaugural Session began with Smt. Jaya Row of the Vedanta Vision, Mumbai delivering a very inspiring and moving address on 'Selfless Service', followed by another equally scintillating presentation by RI Dir. Elect Manoj Desai “Kathni aur Karni”, to a packed audience. There were several noteworthy presentations during these 2 days, and the gathering was particularly impressed with the presentations of the Gates Foundation, Ham Pa Nagarajaiah, Dr. Chandrasekhar Shetty, and others. The RI Rep. PDG Anil Agarwal impressed the gathering with his passionate presentation about Rotary, the need to serve, and be involved with the world of Rotary.

The program to recognize and felicitate the wonderful social and community service of 2 eminent Rotarians Arjun Menda, and Dr. Sunder Ram Shetty, with citations, was colourful and much appreciated, inspiring all those present in the gathering.

In the evening of the 21st, post the first day sessions, the En te r t a i nm en t P rog ram , coupled with liberal fellowship, saw a full house, with the delegates absorbing and enjoying the music session by Ajay Warrier's group, the s u p e r l a t i v e Ya k s h a g a n a Per fo rmance by Mantap Prabhakar and his team of art ists, and breathtaking Bharatanatyam performances

by the well known Raadha Kalpa troupe, directed by Rukmini Vijayakumar. The program extended until 10.30 pm, by popular demand, and received very appreciative reviews and commendations by the audience.

The highlight event, of course, was the presence of Saina Nehwal, world Badminton Champion, who was felicitated, honoured, and presented, with a purse of Rs. 1 lakh, in the Youth Services session, on Sunday morning, in the presence of an overflowing gathering. Her 'straight from the heart' address to the assembly was received with a standing ovation, and everyone regretted that it had to end so soon.

The Conference covered many aspects of Rotary, including the passing of key resolutions, balloting for election of the nominating committee member, for the RI Director elections, the presentations of the incoming Governors, and the Rotary Convention at Sao Paolo. Conference Committee Chairmen and their Committees were all appreciated and felicitated for their wonderful work and their immense contributions for a successful conference, and thanked onstage.

This Conference, while exhibiting all that most Conferences do, was special and unique because the focus was on austerity, and support for the environment. It was a zero garbage conference, with no plastic waste, adequate but tasty food, with an interesting variety, well sponsored kits and mementos, and punctual conduct of all sessions. We had 400 Patron registrations, collected before October 2014, a record of sorts, enabling resource mobilization well before the Conference. All stalls were occupied, and beautifully organized, creating much interest in the intervals and breaks, the programs and sessions were handled brilliantly and meticulously, the fellowship counters were overflowing, and the speakers were all well chosen, months in advance, and met with everyone's expectations. All Chairmen extended wonderful support, in what was a very satisfying and rewarding Conference for all.

The District Governor, the Conference Chairman Vijayakumar and Secretary Fazal Mohamed, and the Core Committee led the Conference Team with commitment, planning, and valuable inputs, and effective management, which together resulted in a surplus of about 10 lakhs, which will add to the coffers of the Rotary Foundation. In conclusion, those who participated in the Conference were happy that all aspects of the Conference - programs, speakers, catering, fellowship & entertainment, etc., were all conducted and managed well, and agreed that this was a 'value for money' conference, with many motivating and inspiring take aways.

Through this column the Committee also expresses its thanks, gratitude, and appreciation to every Rotarian who has been responsible for, and part of this wonderful conference, and for the opportunity to serve, and for making this a memorable event in the Rotary Calendar.

PP Rtn. Suresh hari

During my recent visit to Bhutan, I met the President & Board members of the Rotary Club of Thimpu. They were keen to join hands with RID 3190 for different Community Projects in areas of Health Care, Literacy environment.

The Global Grant Project for Nava Nirmana Charitable Trust (NNCT) was inaugurated by Rotary Bangalore North West (RBNW). It was very touching to see about 42 special children of surrounding villages being trained to do simple day-to-day routine tasks so that they can lead an independent life. Under this GG Project, we have now provided sophisticated equipment for Audiology & Physical Therapy. Three of NNCT's staff are being sent to clinics for special children at the University of Kentucky, USA for advanced training in the use of these equipment as well as to learn the modern techniques used. It was noteworthy that 17 doctors and other specialists from University of Kentucky are visiting Mayasandra regularly, to help NNCT in their work.

For this humanitarian GG project, RBNW has joined hands with Rotary Club of Tumkur East, Dist. 3190 along with Matching partners from Fort Collins Breakfast Rotary Club, Fort Collins After Work RC, RC Windsor, Dist. 5440 and The Rotary Foundation from USA. The total project cost is Rs. 23,03,929.

Rotary's Gift of Life India coordinator, A C Peter was felicitated jointly by four Rotary Clubs in Bengaluru – Jeevanbimanagar, Koramangala, Greater Bangalore and Cosmopolitan – for the accomplishment.

Peter thanked Rotarians of the city for joining the movement and said, “About 0.23 million children are born with congenital heart diseases (CHD) every year in India. Children from below poverty line cannot afford the high cost of surgery and have no access to quality medical care. Gift of Life has arranged more than 2,500 open heart surgeries at specialty hospitals in Delhi free of cost for beneficiaries under the project ever since its inception.”

Children from all parts of India, especially the remotest regions of the North-East, Jammu and Kashmir, and also from Uganda, Kenya, Sudan, Nigeria, El Salvador, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Pakistan benefited from this project. They were given free cardiac surgery, medicine, food, accommodation, hospitality, boarding and lodging, conveyance etc. Rotarians regularly visited the children in the hospital and offered monthly care,” said a statement from the club.
