    Product Series

    Overview

The PCS100 STATCOM range is part of a family of low voltage power converter products

available from ABB. Based around the PCS100 converter platform the STATCOM

product provides wide bandwidth performance with a flexible and highly reliable modular

    power electronic configuration.

New renewable generation such as wind and solar are becoming an increasingly

important part of modern electricity grids, but to meet dynamic Grid Connection

requirements STATCOM products must often be fitted. By injecting reactive current

during a grid fault condition the STATCOM will help the generators ride through system

fault events as required by the grid codes.

During normal grid conditions, or at an end users site, the PCS100 STATCOM can

provide correction for voltage flicker, poor power factor and harmonic currents. The

PCS100 STATCOM advanced control also allows it to damp voltage disturbances in the

electricity network. This control feature is very important to maintain power system

stability following events such as recovering from a fault or the switching of passive

elements. For end user industrial loads such as arc furnaces and mesh grid welders the

PCS100 STATCOM can be applied to compensate voltage flicker and current distortion

problems that often accompany these processes.

    B 125 kVA, 480 V/3~. 50/60 Hz, 150 A, Direct grid connection

All PCS100 products use the same LV power modules which employ IGBTs and integrated

sinusoidal filters. The AC power connections of each module are protected by high speedsemiconductor fuses allowing simple paralleling of modules to achieve the required power

rating. The DC connections of each module remain independent.

The modules sine filter configuration differs for transformer coupled or direct grid connected

STATCOM systems. If you are transformer coupled to e.g. a medium voltage you will choose

module type A which incorporates an LC filter. If your STATCOM will be directly coupled to a

low voltage installation (e.g. 380-480 Vac) you will need module type B with a LCL filter. Power

rating for all modules is 125 kVA at nominal voltage of 480 Vac. To meet high voltage ride

through requirements it may be necessary to reduce the AC coupling voltage at the module. In

this case the power capacity is reduced accordingly.

Ratings, number of modules, voltage & frequency

Even with power modules rated for 480V/3~ nominal voltage a STATCOM is very unlikely sized

to operate at 480V. This is due to specifications asking for overvoltage or HVRT (high voltage

ride through) capability. To allow for this requirement the sizing of the STATCOM range in this

table refers to 460 V/3~ coupling voltage. For more details on the STATCOM sizing please refer

    to the chapter sizing.

    Options

The options for all PCS100 are defined by additional codes. Each option has an own code and

will be added to the type code by a plus. The options are categorized.

    Available options

A standard PCS100 STATCOM contains a GDM (graphic display module) and one CAN-I/O-

board (CIOB). The GDM has a USB port to interface to a PC (ABB Service) and an Ethernet

port to allow Modbus TCP/IP or remote web server functionality. The CAN-I/O-board (CIOB)

also contains a serial RS485 Modbus connection.

+A200 External aux. power supply for cabinets (instead of powering from main

    terminals), 230 and 110 V/1~ 2 kVA for up to 6 modules.

+CT1 or +CT5 Optional external CT input for cabinets. 1A or 5A.

    +VT110 or VT480 Optional external VT input for cabinets. 110V L-L or 480V L-L.

+OCB Output circuit breaker(s) in extra 400mm cabinet.

+IP23 or IP42 Increased IP rating for cabinet systems. Upon request.

    Redundancy

The PCS100 Advanced Redundancy feature represents a further milestone of power electronics

    reliability and availability improvements.

It allows uninterrupted operation in case of a module failure with N-1 reduced capability. The

faulty module will be taken out of operation while the rest of the system continues.

    Value:

Reduces power output in a failure only by a small fraction of the total system power.

Enables built in n+1 configurations by adding a spare module to achieve breakthrough levels in

    power availability.

Allows careful and flexible planning of converter repair/faulty module replacement.

The PCS100 STATCOM receives a voltage reference. The internal controller compares

measured voltage (MV or LV level) and reference. Is the voltage below the reference, capacitive

reactive power is injected. If the voltage is too high inductive Q will be delivered. Voltage

    feedback is needed.

    Power Factor mode:

The PCS100 STATCOM receives a PF reference. The internal controller compares measured

PF and reference and controls the power factor on the connection point to meet the reference. It

delivers capacitive or inductive VArs depending on the existing PF. Voltage and current

feedback is needed. There are 2 variants of the PF mode. Fixed PF defines the signed PF and

PF range allows a PF in a +/- range. E.g PF range 0.98 means the PF should stay between

-0.981+0.98. Only if the PF gets out of this range the STATCOM is active. Voltage andcurrent feedback is needed.

    Reactive Current mode:

The PCS100 STATCOM receives a reference proportional to the amount of reactive current

needed. The signed reference defines inductive or capacitive reactive current.

    Flicker mitigation:

Flicker mitigation is a feature that can be used with the voltage control mode. Depending on the

application we need to specify the position of the current feedback. Current and voltage

    feedback is needed.

    Harmonic fil tering:

The PCS100 STATCOM has the capability to suppress low frequency harmonics, especially 5th

and 7th. The PCS100 is capable of correcting two integer or non-integer harmonics, up to the

7th. This feature is available in every control mode and requires current and voltage feedback

    from the system.

    Unbalance (negative sequence) correction:

The PCS100 STATCOM can selectively correct either unbalanced voltages or currents.Negative sequence current correction is limited to 30% of the nominal unit current. This feature

is available in every control mode and requires current and voltage feedback from the system.

    Typical Installations

Each mode has different sensor requirements. In any application the PCS100 can

accommodate an optional transformer (eg MV-LV) between the control-point and the unit.

    Voltage, Reactive Current and Voltage-

    Unbalance Modes

These modes only require VT feedback.

Feedback can be from internal VT or

    external Point of Common Coupling.

    Harmonics Feedforward

    Harmonics feedforward cancelation

measures the load current with a CT to

cancel it at the Point of Common Coupling.

    Power Factor, Current-Unbalance, and

    Harmonics Feedback Modes

These modes only require both VTs and

CTs located at the Point of Common

    Coupling.

    Flicker Cancelation

    Flicker cancelation employs both voltage

    correction and current-feedforward. Current

feedforward minimizes the effect of the load

flicker source, and voltage correction fixes

    any residue voltage flicker.

    Sizing

The sizing of a STATCOM is depending on the application. Based on the needed VAr amount and the grid

requirements the number of modules required can be defined.

Applications like repetitive flicker (e.g. welder or crasher) or LVRT (low voltage ride through) support canoften be targeted by using the overload capability of the system.

    Power factor cont rol:

PF control very seldom requires dynamic behavior. Therefore most PF applications can be solved with

passive elements switched together with main loads. For cost reasons only the dynamic part of the PF

fluctuations should be targeted by a STATCOM. Switching limitations for the passive elements may cause

the need for a STATCOM. The relation between displacement PF and power can be described by the

    following equations:

    with: S = apparent power,

    P= real power &Q = reactive power.

    Voltage control:

A STATCOM delivers reactive current only.

Therefore the potential voltage support is

limited by the impedance and power rating of

the next coupling transformer. If we have a

wind farm at 33 kV and the coupling

transformer to the HV is e.g. rated with 50MVA & uk= 10% we can achieve a maximum

voltage support of 10% by using a 50 MVA

STATCOM. Most voltage fluctuations are only

short term events. Therefore we often can use

overload capability of the STATCOM (e.g.

LVRT support for a wind farm).Statcom Load orGeneration
