First Reading

Isaiah 11:1-10

He judges the poor with justice.Chúa lấy sự công minh mà xét xử người nghèo khó.

A shoot springs from the stock of Jesse, a scion thrusts from his roots:

Ngày ấy, từ gốc tổ Gie-sê, sẽ đâm ra một nhánh nhỏ, từ cội rễ ấy, sẽ mọc lên một mầm non.

on him the spirit of the Lord rests, a spirit of wisdom and insight, a spirit of counsel and power, a spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord.(The fear of the Lord is his breath.)

Thần khí Đức Chúa sẽ ngự trên vị này: thần khí khôn ngoan và minh mẫn, thần khí mưu lược và dũng mãnh, thần khí hiểu biết và kính sợ Đức Chúa. Lòng kính sợ Đức Chúa làm cho Người hứng thú,

He does not judge by appearances, he gives no verdict on hearsay, but judges the wretched with integrity, and with equity gives a verdict for the poor of the land.

His word is a rod that strikes the ruthless; his sentences bring death to the wicked.Integrity is the loincloth round his waist, faithfulness the belt about his hips.

Lời Người nói là cây roi đánh vào xứ sở,hơi miệng thở ra giết chết kẻ gian tà.Đai thắt ngang lưng là đức công chính,giải buộc bên sườn là đức tín thành.

The wolf lives with the lamb, the panther lies down with the kid, calf and lion cub feed together with a little boy to lead them.

Bấy giờ sói sẽ ở với chiên con, beo nằm bên dê nhỏ. Quang Bò tơ và sư tử non được nuôi chung với nhau, một cậu bé sẽ chăn dắt chúng.

The cow and the bear make friends, their young lie down together. The lion eats straw like the ox. The infant plays over the cobra’s hole; into the viper’s lair the young child puts his hand.

Bò cái kết thân cùng gấu cái, con của chúng nằm chung một chỗ,sư tử cũng ăn rơm như bò. Bé thơ còn đang bú giỡn chơi bên hang rắn lục, trẻ thơ vừa cai sữa thọc tay vào ổ rắn hổ mang.

They do not hurt, no harm, on all my holy mountain, for the country is filled with the knowledge of the Lord as the waters swell the sea.

Sẽ không còn ai tác hại và tàn phá trên khắp núi thánh của Ta, vì sự hiểu biết Đức Chúa sẽ tràn ngập đất này, cũng như nước lấp đầy lòng biển.

That day, the root of Jesse shall stand as signal to the peoples. It will be sought out by the nations and its hom will be glorious.

Đến ngày đó, cội rễ Gie-sê sẽ đứng lên làm cờ hiệu cho các dân. Các dân tộc sẽ tìm kiếm Người, và nơi Người ngự sẽ rực rỡ vinh.

Second Reading

St Paul to the Romans 15:4-9

Christ, the hope of all people.Đức Ki-tô cứu độ hết mọi người.

Everything that was written long ago in the scriptures was meant to teach us something about hope from the examples scripture gives of how people who did not give up were helped by God.

Thưa anh em, mọi lời xưa đã chép trong Kinh Thánh, đều được chép để dạy dỗ chúng ta. Những lời ấy làm cho chúng ta nên kiên nhẫn, và an ủi chúng ta, để nhờ đó chúng ta vững lòng trông cậy.

And may he who helps us when we refuse to give up, help you all to be tolerant with each other, following the example of Christ Jesus,

Xin Thiên Chúa là nguồn kiên nhẫn và an ủi, làm cho anh em được đồng tâm nhất trí với nhau, như Đức Ki-tô Giê-su đòi hỏi.

so that united in mind and voice you may give glory to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.It can only be to God’s glory, then, for you to treat each other in the same friendly way as Christ treated you.

Nhờ đó, anh em sẽ có thể hiệp ý đồng thanh mà tôn vinh Thiên Chúa, là Thân Phụ Đức Giê-su Ki-tô, Chúa chúng ta.Vậy, anh em hãy đón nhận nhau, như Đức Ki-tô đã đón nhận anh em, để làm rạng danh Thiên Chúa.

The reason Christ became the servant of circumcised Jews was not only so that God could faithfully carry out the promises made to the patriarchs, it was also to get the pagans to give glory to God for his mercy,

Thật vậy, tôi xin quả quyết : Đức Ki-tô có đến phục vụ những người được cắt bì, để thực hiện những gì Thiên Chúa đã hứa với tổ tiên họ, đó là do lòng trung thành của Thiên Chúa. Còn các dân ngoại có được tôn vinh Thiên Chúa,

as scripture says in one place: For this I shall praise you among the pagans and sing your name.

thì đó là do lòng thương xót của Người, như có lời chép: Vì thế giữa muôn dân con cất lời cảm tạ, dâng điệu hát cung đàn ca mừng danh thánh Chúa.

The Gospel of St. Matthew 3:1-12

Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is close at hand.Anh em hãy sám hối vì Nước Trời đã đến gần.

In due course John the Baptist appeared; he preached in the wilderness of Judaea and this was his message: ‘Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is close at hand.’

Khi ấy, ông Gio-an Tẩy Giả đến rao giảng trong hoang địa miền Giu-đê rằng : “Anh em hãy sám hối, vì Nước Trời đã đến gần.”

This was the man the prophet Isaiah spoke of when he said:A voice cries in the wilderness: Prepare a way for the Lord, make his paths straight.

Ông chính là người đã được ngôn sứ I-sai-a nói tới:Có tiếng người hô trong hoang địa: Hãy dọn sẵn con đường cho Đức Chúa, sửa lối cho thẳng để Người đi.

This man John wore a garment made of camel-hair with a leather belt round his waist, and his food was locusts and wild honey.

Ông Gio-an mặc áo lông lạc đà, thắt lưng bằng dây da, lấy châu chấu và mật ong rừng làm thức ăn.

Then Jerusalem and all Judaea and the whole Jordan district made their way to him, and as they were baptised by him in the river Jordan they confessed their sins,

Bấy giờ, người ta từ Giê-ru-sa-lem và khắp miền Giu-đê, cùng khắp vùng ven sông Gio-đan, kéo đến với ông. Họ thú tội, và ông làm phép rửa cho họ trong sông Gio-đan.

But when he saw a number of Pharisees and Sadducees coming for baptism he said to them, ‘Brood of vipers, who warned you to fly from the retribution that is coming?

Thấy nhiều người thuộc phái Pha-ri-sêu và phái Xa-đốc đến chịu phép rửa, ông nói với họ rằng : “Nòi rắn độc kia, ai đã chỉ cho các anh cách trốn cơn thịnh nộ của Thiên Chúa sắp giáng xuống vậy ?

But if you are repentant, produce the appropriate fruit, and do not presume to tell yourselves, “We have Abraham for our father,” because, I tell you, God can raise children for Abraham from these stones.

Các anh hãy sinh hoa quả để chứng tỏ lòng sám hối. Đừng tưởng có thể bảo mình rằng : ‘Chúng ta đã có tổ phụ Áp-ra-ham.’ Vì, tôi nói cho các anh hay, Thiên Chúa có thể làm cho những hòn đá này trở nên con cháu ông Áp-ra-ham.

Even now the axe is laid to the roots of the trees, so that any tree which fails to produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown on the fire.

Cái rìu đã đặt sát gốc cây : bất cứ cây nào không sinh quả tốt đều bị chặt đi và quăng vào lửa.

I baptise you in water for repentance, but the one who follows me is more powerful that I am, and I am not fit to carry his sandals; he will baptise you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

Phần tôi, tôi làm phép rửa cho các anh bằng nước để giục lòng các anh sám hối. Còn Đấng đến sau tôi thì quyền thế hơn tôi, tôi không đáng xách dép cho Người. Người sẽ làm phép rửa cho các anh bằng Thánh Thần và bằng lửa.

His winnowing-fan is in his hand; he will clear his threshing-floor and gather his wheat into the barn; but the chaff he will burn in a fire that will never go out.’

I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages.

Tôi tin kính một Chúa Giêsu Kitô, Con Một Thiên Chúa, sinh bởi Ðức Chúa Cha từ trước muôn đời.

God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made.

Người là Thiên Chúa bởi Thiên Chúa, ánh sáng bởi ánh sáng, Thiên Chúa thật bởi Thiên Chúa thật, được sinh ra mà không phải được tạo thành, đồng bản thể với Ðức Chúa Cha, nhờ Người mà muôn vật được tạo thành.

For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven,(all bow)by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man.

Vì loài người chúng ta và để cứu rỗi chúng ta, Người đã từ trời xuống thế(cúi đầu) bởi phép Ðức Chúa Thánh Thần, Người đã nhập thể trong lòng Trinh Nữ Maria, và đã làm người.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried.

On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son with the Father and the Son he is worshipped and glorified.
