Improving educational outcomes and sustainable employment pathways
“Take care of your children, take a job when you find one, create a safe environment, and send your kids to school.” (The Hon Julia Gillard MP, Prime Minister of Australia, 2011).
However, effective education and sustainable employment can be much more complex and challenging for many Indigenous Australians who feel culturally isolated and unsupported in these areas.
Despite improvements in Indigenous literacy, education and employment the government is failing to meet 4 out of the 6 ‘Closing the Gap’ targets. These 4 focus on increasing Indigenous educational attainment and employment.
In acknowledging that the national priority of ‘Closing the Gap’ on living standards needs to be more than statements of intent, educational leaders are pushing for reform against age-old strategies for Indigenous education that simply do not work.
The 2nd Annual Indigenous Education, Transitions & Employment Conference will drive deeper into challenges associated with school attendance, student performance and effective transitioning into work or post-school study.
Offering a range of innovative and progressive strategies that move away from traditional models, you will be privy to some of the nation’s leading thinkers in education and employment, and their strategies tailored to Indigenous people.
Comprising a national forum of experts spanning the education, training, transitions and employment sectors you will take away the latest methods on how to improve Indigenous educational outcomes which translate to meaningful, sustainable employment.
Gain insights into:• How to increase engagement, motivation and
aspiration for sustainable post-school pathways• Flexible tertiary and vocational education and training
pathways to increase employability• Employers with long term Indigenous employment
frameworks• Mentoring and role model strategies that embed the
value of education and sustainable choices

Developing local workforces Pre conference Workshop A Monday 18th July, 2011 9:00am – 4:00pm
Increasing Year 10/12 educational attainment and transitional support into employment has increased sustainable pathways for Indigenous students. However, often graduates struggle to gain employment, even after year 12 completion due to shortages in available positions in their local area.
This workshop will illustrate a new state wide initiative that links skills training for students with service providers, thereby increasing local employment opportunities and community growth.
Participants will increase knowledge on how to:
• Develop and deliver skill sets required to fill local positions and industries
• Increase collaboration across local service delivery employers • Implement school based skills building programs for students
wishing to gain local employment • Access programs enabling employment across a variety of
industries• Develop networks between Government, RTO’s, Group Training
Authorities and CDEP providers• Develop supportive mechanisms through mentoring
processes• Increase staff and student retention working to gain or assist
with Indigenous employment • Implement literacy and numeracy programs to bridge
educational gaps

The David Wirrpanda Foundation exists to improve the life outcomes of Indigenous children by promoting strong role models and healthy life choices. By attending this workshop you will learn how to:
• Develop a range of programs with holistic approaches to improving health, well-being, motivation and self-esteem
• Link role models with local community representatives for continued student engagement
• Make education attractive to Indigenous students including breaking down common barriers
• Reduce feuding amongst female Indigenous students
• Utilise Aboriginal engagement officers in schools
