Starting andOperating

Starting the EngineAlways maintain a minimumgasoline level of at least one-quartertank. To protect engine components,a switch to gasoline may occur atany time. The vehicle will not start ifthe engine stalls due to lack ofgasoline.

FuelIf a fuel leak is suspected, see FuelSystem Leak 0 16.

. Whichever mode is selected, thevehicle always starts ongasoline. When CNG mode isselected, the vehicle willautomatically transition from gasto CNG. Always keep thegasoline tank at leastone-quarter full.

. It is very important not to run thegasoline tank out of fuel. Thesystem will not switch over toCNG operation if the enginestalls while running on gasoline.

. If the vehicle runs out of CNGfuel, it will automatically switchover to gasoline operation. Fornormal CNG operation, fill theCNG fuel storage system untilthe fuel gauge or DIC fuel levelpage displays at leastone-quarter full.

. If it takes unusually long to fillthe CNG cylinder, the fuel fillfilter may be clogged. Contactyour dealer for inspection and/orreplacement.

This vehicle is designed to operateon gasoline or Compressed NaturalGas (CNG) and has a gasoline tankand a CNG fuel storage system.See “Recommended Fuel” under“Fuel” in the owner manual forgasoline information.

The general marketplace fuel qualityof CNG (for motor vehicles) in thestate of California should be incompliance with Title 13 CaliforniaCode of Regulations, Section2292.5. The remaining regions ofNorth America do not employregulated fuel quality standards forgeneral marketplace vehicle usage, however, fuel is available at bothprivate and public filling stations. We recommend use of natural gasfuel from fueling stations designedfor providing fuel for vehicle use.

The main component of CNG ismethane, a highly flammable, colorless gas. An odorant has beenadded for detection through smell. The smell is similar to that of rotteneggs. The CNG in the vehicle isstored under high pressure(maximum 24 800 kPa/3,600 psig).Gas should never be smelled and ahissing sound should not be heard, unless refueling is being done.If gas is smelled or a hissing soundis heard at any other time, shutdown the vehicle and have itserviced. It may be possible to hearthe fuel flowing while the engine isrunning if standing close to thepipework or various fuel systemcomponents (regulator, filter). This isnormal and should not be confusedwith a hissing sound at fittings thatmay indicate a fuel leak. Follow theinstructions under Fuel System Leak0 16.

Fuel Selector Switch

The fuel selector switch is on thecenter stack below the climatecontrols. When the ignition is inON/RUN, pressz to selectbetween gasoline and CNG mode. The operating mode will bemaintained between key cycles. Theswitch also includes the fueloperation indicator light.

Chevrolet/GMC Silverado/Sierra Bi-Fuel (Gasoline/CNG) Supplement (GMNA-Localizing-U.S/Canada-9234766) - 2016 - CRC - 8/13/15

Driving and Operating 11

The vehicle always starts ongasoline. If the fuel selector switchis in CNG mode when the vehicle isstarted, the vehicle will start ongasoline and switch to CNG whenconditions for CNG operation havebeen met. While waiting totransition, the fuel operationindicator light will be flashing at arate of once per second. If thevehicle is turned off in gasolinemode, when started it will remain ingasoline mode until the fuel selectorswitch is pressed. At temperaturesbelow freezing, it may take 10 to15 minutes for the vehicle to switchfrom gasoline to CNG. If the switchis pressed to go to gasoline fromCNG while driving, the engine willchange to gasoline operation. If operating in CNG mode and theCNG tank is emptied, the vehiclewill automatically switch to gasolineoperation and the indicator light willflash continuously. Pressz to stopthe indicator light flashing. If thesystem transitions more than20 times in a single key cycle, it willremain in the last mode selected.

When the vehicle is heavily loaded, such as when towing a trailer up agrade, it may be prevented fromswitching to CNG. Once the highloads are no longer present, thesystem will switch.

Fuel Operation Indicator Light

The fuel operation indicator lightshows the current fuel mode orindicates a transition between fuels.

. Off: Vehicle is currentlyoperating on gasoline.

. On: Vehicle is currentlyoperating on CNG.

. Flashing Slowly (Once perSecond): Vehicle is awaitingchangeover to selected fuel orhas started the changeover.

. Flashing Rapidly (10 Times perSecond): CNG system error. Seeyour dealer.

Filling the Tank

{ Warning

CNG is flammable and highlyexplosive. You could be killed orseriously injured if leaking naturalgas is ignited. If you suspect aleak, do not start the engine ordrive the vehicle. Have thevehicle immediately towed, inspected, and repaired by anauthorized GM dealer.

Before filling either fuel tank, turn offthe engine.

The gasoline tank is filled throughthe standard fill pipe. See “Fillingthe Tank” under “Fuel” in the ownermanual.

12 Driving and Operating

The CNG fill valve is behind the fueldoor on the driver side of the tankshield in the pickup bed.

There is an identifying bluediamond-shaped CNG label on therear of the vehicle. Do not removethis label. This label is necessary for

compliance with NFPA-52regulations. Driving without thislabel may violate the laws orregulations in some states.Replacement labels can be orderedfrom your dealer.

Refueling Procedure

There are two methods of refueling:fast filling or slow filling. Fast fillingis normally used in fuel stations fornatural gas vehicles. It takes aboutsix to eight minutes to fill up the fueltanks. Slow filling is done with avehicle refueling appliance or atime-fill post provided by the fleetoperator. Refueling time variesdepending upon the refuelingsystem used — consult with therefueling station attendant or systemprovider. Always observe all safetyrecommendations and operatinginstructions on the refuelingequipment. When refueling, use afuel fill nozzle that complies withANSI/CSA-NGV 1-2006 standards.Nozzles are designed according totheir maximum fill pressure: P30

(blue handle) for 20 684 kPa(3,000 psig) and P36 (yellowhandle) for 24 800 kPa (3,600 psig).

Refuel with a yellow P36 nozzlewhere available. Using a blue P30nozzle will provide a partial fill only.

During fueling, CNG needs to bedelivered to the vehicle at theappropriate pressure in relationshipto the ambient temperature. Thiscan be done automatically by atemperature compensation systemon the CNG fuel dispenser ormanually by stopping the CNG fill ata recommended pressure. GMrecommends that customers useCNG fueling stations that have atemperature compensation systemwhenever possible. Check with thefuel station. If one is not available, see the temperature compensationchart that follows in this section tochoose the appropriate fill pressurefor the ambient temperature. Inaddition, fill only to the pressurelevel for the lowest ambienttemperature anticipated duringfueling.

Driving and Operating 13

Leaving a vehicle connected to aslow fill station can cause the tankto be filled to a higher pressure thanrecommended, especially whenoutside temperatures fluctuate.Disconnect the vehicle from the fillstation as soon as it is full, unlessan auto shutoff feature is used.

{ Warning

If CNG tanks are filled to a higherpressure than recommended andthen exposed to a much higherambient temperatureenvironment, expansion of thegas caused by the temperaturechange may cause pressure reliefdevices on the vehicle CNGtank(s) to release gas, asdesigned. If an ignition source ispresent, this could create a risk offire or explosion. If there is anypossibility that the tank has beenover pressurized, take steps torelieve the excess pressure, suchas by driving or running thevehicle in an outdoor open areato remove some fuel.

Make sure that your CNG vehicle isproperly maintained and repaired toavoid elevated temperaturessurrounding the tank, since elevatedtemperatures in the area of the tankcould also raise the CNG pressurein the tank.

Consult materials availablefrom NGVAmerica -http://www.ngvc.org and the CleanVehicle Education Foundation -http://www.cleanvehicle.org on CNGfueling stations.

Ambient Temperature/MaximumCNG Fill Pressure CompensationChart

To avoid the risk of fire or explosionif an ignition source were present,do not fill above the pressure levelthat corresponds to the lowestambient temperature expectedduring fueling.

Service Pressure 24 800 kPa(3,600 psig) at 21 °C (70 °F).

14 Driving and Operating

Depending on CNG fill stationequipment/performanceand environmental conditions,

CNG fill volume will vary. This will affect overall vehiclerange.

{ Warning

Attempting to fill a CNG fuelsystem that has a missing ordamaged O‐ring is dangerous.Natural gas can leak. If thenatural gas is ignited, you orothers could be injured. Replacethe O‐ring before filling the tank.

Put the vehicle into P (Park) andturn off the engine prior to refueling.

Remove the dust cap from thereceptacle, clean off any dirt ordebris on the receptacle, and follow

the refueling instructions on thepump or provided by the stationoperator.

Refueling will stop automaticallywhen the tank is full. Wait for thehigh pressure fuel to be purged fromthe hose before disconnecting. Seethe station operator for informationon how the line is purged. Todisconnect the vehicle from therefueling station, remove the nozzlefrom the fill valve. A hissing soundmay be heard as a small amount ofnatural gas escapes. This is normal.

Put the fill valve dust cap onsecurely and close the fuelfiller door.

If fuel or vapor is heard or seenleaking from the nozzle-fill valveconnection, stop refuelingimmediately. Dirt or other debrismay be preventing a positiveconnection. Turn off the refuelingdispenser, disconnect the nozzle, and inspect the fill valve for amissing, damaged, dirty, or wornO-ring. Reconnect the refuelingdispenser to the fill valve and beginrefueling again. If it continues toleak, replace the fill valve O-ring.

To replace the fill valve O-ring:

1. Carefully remove the O-ringfrom the groove in the fill valve.A small flat-blade or pointedtool can be used.

2. Make sure the groove is cleanand free of dirt and debris.

3. Install the new O-ring in thegroove in the fill valve. Makesure the O-ring is properlyseated in the groove.

If it continues to leak after you havereplaced the O-ring, have anauthorized dealer inspect thesealing O-ring in the fill valve.

If there is dirt or other debris on theinside of the fuel fill valve, gas mayleak out after refueling. If you needto add more fuel, do the refuelingprocedure again.

See an authorized GM dealer forreplacement O-rings.

Pressure Relief Devices

The CNG tank has pressure reliefdevices that are designed to releasepressure if the CNG tank isoverheated or over pressurized.

If a pressure relief device releasesCNG, the CNG tank will be emptiedand will switch to gasoline,if gasoline is available. A loudrushing noise may be heard whenCNG is released.

Fuel System Leak

{ Warning

Fuel vapors and fuel fires burnviolently and can cause injury ordeath.

. Keep all smoking materialsand sources of ignition awayfrom the fuel systemcomponents.

. CNG is non-toxic but thevapors are lighter than airand can cause oxygendepletion if they are

enclosed in a confinedspace. Make sure there isadequate ventilation anduse extreme caution if aleak is suspected.

{ Warning

If you smell a persistent naturalgas odor or hear a continualhissing sound, there could be anatural gas leak. If the natural gasis ignited, you or others could beinjured. Do not start the engine ordrive the vehicle. Have thevehicle towed to an authorizedGM dealer for service.

A slight natural gas odor may bedetected for a few moments afterrefueling. This is normal. You shouldnot be able to smell natural gas atany other time. If you do, or if youhear a hissing sound, the fuelsystem may have a leak.

If natural gas is smelled or a hissingsound is heard:

1. Park the vehicle in awell-ventilated area and applythe parking brake. Keep heat, sparks, and flame away. Openall the vehicle doors forventilation.

2. Turn the ignition to LOCK/OFF.

Trailer TowingFor more information, see “TrailerTowing” in the owner manual.

Weight of the Trailer

How heavy can a trailer safely be?

It depends on how the rig is used. For example, speed, altitude, roadgrades, outside temperature, andhow much the vehicle is used to pulla trailer are all important. It candepend on any special equipmenton the vehicle, and the amount oftongue weight the vehicle can carry.

Maximum trailer weight is calculatedassuming only the driver is in thetow vehicle and it has all therequired trailering equipment. Theweight of additional optionalequipment, passengers, and cargoin the tow vehicle must besubtracted from the maximum trailerweight.
