Welcome to St. Paul! On behalf of AAC’s Board of Trustees, staff, and our incredible Minnesota host committee, welcome to the 2019 Alliance of Artists Communities Annual Conference!

This year’s theme, FAIR PRACTICE, explores how artist residencies and artist-centered programs are evolving their processes and practices to be stable, responsive organizations that create extraordinary artist experiences. We appreciate that you have chosen this annual gathering and to join with friends, colleagues, and AAC in forwarding fair and just treatment of

artists, administrators, and community members. We believe this is only possible by building environments that invite the contribution of others, by ensuring equal access to opportunity and information, and by developing effective organizational policies, processes, and practices.

A great deal of planning has gone into bringing you the most comprehensive and engaging professional development conference in our field. The schedule offers a balance of deep dives on salient topics, capacity-building workshops, and provocative plenaries where we will interrogate the issues that affect how we practice. It will be an energizing and generative experience.

The Alliance of Artists Communities is thrilled to feature the extraordinary artwork of Dyani White Hawk on the cover of this year’s program.

DYANI WHITE HAWK (Sičáŋǧu Lakota) is a visual artist and independent curator based in Minneapolis. White Hawk earned an MFA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (2011) and BFA from the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, NM (2008). Recent support of White Hawk’s work includes a 2019 United States Artists Fellowship, 2019 Eiteljorg Fellowship for Contemporary Art, 2019 Jerome Hill Artist Fellowship, 2018 Nancy Graves Grant for Visual Artists, 2017 Native Arts and Cultures Foundation Fellowship and 2014 Joan Mitchell Painters and Sculptors Grant. Her work is represented by Bockley Gallery in Minneapolis.

Looking for strategies to develop a healthy and effective board? Join us for the Building Boards Workshop—a full-day training designed to help your organization develop a healthy, passionate board, embrace governance responsibilities and build fundraising expertise. Led by board development experts Glyn Northington and Elizabeth Koenig of Propel Nonprofits, the 2019 program includes highly interactive sessions and skill-building exercises to support your organization’s leaders.

Belwin Conservancy works to inspire connections to the natural world by protecting and restoring habitat, and by providing environmental education. The site’s prairie, savanna, woodland and wetlands are home to several rare and threatened species including the red-headed woodpecker, rusty-patched bumble bee and Henslow’s sparrow. Since 2016, the site has hosted an artist-in-residence program that engages environmental artists across disciplines. Discover Belwin during a special offsite preconference hike and tour.

(1) International Cultural Exchange, Mobility, and the Future of U.S. Civil Society

Join artists, residency directors, and leading cultural mobility advocates for a timely conversation about international cultural exchange and mobility, and the urgent need to support and develop these critical areas of the American cultural scene. The international movement of artists is essential to cultural exchange, and for maintaining a healthy and progressive global civil society. Current political and social trends increasingly create legal and economic barriers that inhibit—and sometimes prohibit—artists from traveling for residencies or to present their work. This session will examine the current state of international mobility and cultural exchange in the U.S. and ways to counter such trends - including visa support for artists, international residency exchanges, dedicated programs for artists at risk, etc.

(2) Making it Work: Supporting Artist-Parents Through Residencies

It’s time to crack the myth of secluded residencies for carefree artists, without responsibilities and distractions; of mothers and fathers hiding their children from the

art world. Parents face unique challenges when trying to pursue artistic careers. The time and space that residencies offer often seem unreachable for those artists who are also raising families. Hear from artist-parents and residency staff about the many ways programs are opening their doors to parents: from short-term residencies without kids, to full-blown family residencies with on-site camps and family dinners. Through open dialogue between panel and audience, attendees will be empowered and motivated to create programs that reflect the values of an evolving art world.

Join a conversation between three dynamic artists and administrators that approach Cultural Space Keeping as an artistic practice and act of resistance. DS, Shey and Mary Anne share approaches for creating inclusive whole communities and spaces centered on anti-oppression. Reflecting on artist programs they’ve built in St. Paul, Providence, and Pittsburgh, this session explores the role of rituals, beliefs and culture in their daily work and asks: how we use these practices to make neighbors out of residents, and communities out of neighborhoods?

As artists increasingly create work outside of the silos of traditional disciplines, how can arts leaders respond proactively and thoughtfully? What philosophies and perspectives can we take into account as we work to support interdisciplinary artists and projects? (1) Oolite Arts Miami + Climate Change: Partnering for Impact

In 2018 Oolite Arts Miami launched their Art in Public Life residency: a new model that embeds an artist in the City of Miami Beach offices to collaborate on work that addresses rising sea levels and their socioeconomic consequences. In the first year of the program, resident artist Misael Soto worked with Miami’s Director of Environment and Sustainability on the city’s climate adaptation and mitigation strategy. Hear from Misael along with partner and residency leadership on ways the program has changed both Oolite and the city government. Explore how arts organizations can use partnerships to boldly respond to their contexts, empower

artists and cultural producers to take a seat at the table, and address the pressing topics of their region.

(2) Rise of the Curatorial Residency

As curating-as-practice changes, there are a growing number of residencies that are opening their programs to curators. Leading curatorial residency program managers (and residency participants) discuss the evolving needs of curators and how they can be supported through new residency models focused on educational, professional, and relationship development. These programs create opportunities for curators-in-residence to work in, and alongside organizations; investigate independent research; develop new exhibitions; and make connections with new artists and communities.

(4) Cultivating IBPOC Leadership in the Arts

Access to funding and opportunities to create and facilitate civically engaged artistic projects have historically been inequitable. In this session, we’ll talk about ways to fill existing gaps in public art and the creative economy by centering Indigenous and/or Black people and people of color in leadership positions. Through case studies in Boston and St. Paul, we’ll investigate methods used to provide opportunities in public art and creative community development that

center a more diverse network of artists and arts consultants to help shape the future of place-based work in cities and communities. Participants will take away strategies to decenter dominant cultural norms, diversify leadership pipelines and strengthen a more diverse community of practice.

(5) Keep It Moving: Connectivity Among Performing Arts Residencies

When we work to make our sites accessible we may think of ramps first, but welcoming artists involves much more than physical considerations. This two-part workshop combines case studies from residencies who have made large and small changes in their work with artists with disabilities, along with hands-on training about how to build the partnerships and funding needed to achieve your goals for accessibility. Creating a completely accessible organization is not something that can be accomplished overnight, but is best achieved through a long-term commitment to a process of care, responsiveness and learning. (2) Breaking Point: Growth and Expansion Reconsidered

What happens when arts organizations close their doors (or come close)? We will discuss the red flags that are often disguised as opportunities to expand and how we can identify and approach these moments. Centering the discussion around the implications for both staff and community, we will examine definitions of failure and plans for organizational regenesis. Together, in small group work, participants and panelists will examine risks their respective organizations and communities face and identify starting points for discussion with their staff and board. This session is for organizations considering purchasing buildings; starting a program or expanding a program; or assessing financial solvency.

(3) Cooperative Approach to Preparedness + Response

Artist cooperatives, collectives and live/work communities may vary in size and purpose, but they all share a common mission: meeting the specific objectives of their members and adapting to their artists’ changing needs. Self-reliance and self-help are hallmarks of these creative spaces. However, following the devastating Ghost Ship fire in Oakland, California, it became apparent that creative communities must work with municipalities and private companies to ensure that spaces are secure and compliant with zoning and safety regulations. Whether manufactured or natural, the frequency of disasters around the globe highlights the need for preparedness planning, especially in public assembly areas like arts and culture venues. Hear from representatives of the national Performing Arts Readiness and CERF+ The Artists Safety Net programs, and experts from Denver Arts & Venues and New York-based The Artist Co-op about steps your organization can take right away and ways to plan for any scenario.

• AAC aspires to treat everyone with fairness, respect and dignity, and we expect the same of our convening attendees.

• Sexual harassment or harassment in any form will not be tolerated. We encourage everyone to report instances of harassment to AAC leadership (Executive Director, Deputy Director, Director of Membership) or the AAC Safety Team (indicated by a purple star on their nametag).

• We value consent culture and spaces where everyone feels safe. When interacting with people casually or professionally, personal and emotional boundaries must be respected every time.

• Be a good bystander. If you see someone in a harmful situation or interaction, try to help.

• Show care, kindness and respect when listening and engaging in dialogue.

• AAC reserves the right to remove anyone from the conference to anyone who engages in conduct deemed to be harassment toward others.

Supporting an Anti-Ableist Environment• Listen to disabled people’s stories, experiences and perspectives.

• Understand that having a disability does not make our lives any more inspirational or tragic than others. Our disabilities are ordinary and familiar parts of who we are.

• Use the phrase “disabled people” or “people with disabilities” rather than euphemisms. And understand that some people prefer identity-first language over people-first language.

• Know that no single accommodation will work for all disabled people, but increased access benefits everyone.

• Ask before you offer help to a disabled person. What you assume to be helpful may not be. Start with a friendly but non-intrusive question: “Can I provide assistance?” Be okay if the answer is no.

• Recognize that words like “cripple, handicap, spastic, insane, retard, crazy” have been used to bully and oppress disabled people.

• You may hear disabled people calling each other “crip” or “gimp.” This is insider language, and not appropriate for use by non-disabled people.
