PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE …

December is upon us and a lot of excitement

fills the air. It is a busy time of the year, making plans for spending the Holidays with family and friends. It is the time of the year that makes us look back and reminisce of days gone by, count our many blessings, make new resolutions and lay plans for the New Year.

As I was sitting this morning in front

of my laptop with a cup of coffee in my hand, I started to reflect about our CPPG. I find myself using this word over and over again……WOW. The experience of our first Jubilee this past May, the growth and participation of our membership in our Exhibits, Judged Shows, Emerging Artists Exhibits, SEYA (Supporting and Educating Young Artists), Monthly Programs, Newsletter, Website, etc.

As artists we continue to grow, learning

something new from classes and workshops presented by the LLC as well as free workshops where help is available due to the generosity of our teachers … thank you Nan Klein, Jan Jones, Doree Voychick and Frank Zampardi as well as our more experienced member artists, who willingly share their knowledge and expertise.

WOW to the generosity of our members who

give of themselves and make our Guild so special, working behind the scenes and making “things happen”.

I have learned over the years that friendships

are very important in our lives. From time to time we all hit a “bump in the road” and besides family, it is such a good feeling knowing that you can turn to friends for moral support and encouragement. By being active in our Guild, I have expanded my friendships, which in turn has added more meaning to my retirement.

Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy

Holiday Season

DONNA CAPUTO – CPSA “BEST IN SHOW”

LAUREL MANOR EXHIBIT NEW MEMBERS

CONGRATULATIONS

Donna Caputo, a Villager and

charter member of CPPG, was just

awarded "Best of Show" in the Signature Class of the first ever Colored Pencil Society of America’s (CPSA) on-line competition, ArtSpectations.

The competition judge, Jeff George, remarked : “The exquisite "Natasha" exudes a timeless quality. The warm glowing face pops with contrast against the soft dark clothing, presenting a pure and affecting work of art.” To view the show, click on ArtSpectations. Donna’s painting will also selected to be included in Ann Kullberg's second book, CP Treasures Volume II which

will be coming out soon. Natasha also won a first place ribbon in the September CPPG Show at the Lake Miona Recreation Center. It is

currently on display there.

The next Laurel Manor Exhibit is scheduled on Monday, January 6, 2014. For this exhibit, you will now be able to display not only 2-D, 100% colored pencil artwork, but also mixed media, if at least 70% of the painting is done in colored pencils. The Planning Committee decided to make this change because many of us have learned how to mix colored pencil with other media (watercolor, pastels, pen and ink, etc.), and this will give us all an outlet to also display this work. Please bring in your framed painting between 9 and 9:45 a.m.

The complete guidelines and registration forms are on the website: www.pencilpainters.com under SHOWS, Laurel Manor Exhibit. This is a stress free exhibit – no judging, no prizes, no entry fee; just

share your beautiful paintings. Be sure to send in your registration to Helen Gromadzki, 17923 SE 88

th Cascade Ct., The Villages, FL 32162 , by December 30th, or

call her if you have questions at: (352) 750-5651.

Your entry must be framed properly with a wire hanger and bumpers on the back, and completed within the past 12 years. We encourage all Emerging Artists to frame their work and enter it in this show as well. We have space for 40 paintings, so let’s fill up that wall !

Work displayed at the Laurel Manor Exhibit is still eligible for entry into our Judged Shows, if it meets the individual show’s guidelines. The exhibit’s end date is April 7, 2014, so please mark your calendar

now so you’ll remember when it’s time to pick up your painting.

Laurel Manor Exhibit Co-Chairs

JANUARY 19-21, 2014

Taking the Ordinary to Extraordinary This class is simplified for the beginner yet challenging enough for

the experience artist. This three-day workshop will guide and teach students how to approach the process of, and capture the essence and exuberance of light as it passes through an ordinary plastic bag illuminating the fruit within. A delicate balance between realism and abstraction the student, with confidence, will explore the basics of value, shape, pattern and color. There will be demonstrations and plenty of individual attention. Paper will be provided

Fee: $283 for CPPG Members

JANUARY 22-23, 2014 Making Your Colors Glow

In this workshop the student will focus on two things: 1. How to utilize the translucency of colored pencils to make

colors glow, and 2. How to merge darks and lights together so that they

interlock like the pieces of a puzzle.

This workshop will be a valuable resource and an ongoing source for creative inspiration. There will be demonstrations and plenty of individual attention. An additional charge of $10 for supplies will be paid to the instructor. Fee: $189 for CPPG Members

When you receive an email from CPPG NEWS, Linda Carpenter is the person

who makes that happen.

She joined the Guild in July 2011, prior to her move to The Villages. She began taking colored pencil classes in September 2012 and gives high praise to all the members for generously sharing their knowledge with those just starting out. “I want to believe that whatever I put out is good enough to enter a judged show and there are so many people I can turn to for advice. The Guild is such an amazing group that it makes it easier for beginners to risk it.” Linda was born in the

Bronx, NY but moved to Bethesda, MD when she was 10 years old. She attended Walter Johnson High School in Rockville, MD. At the time, it was the only school in the nation named after a baseball player. “I always thought that it was incongruous that we had a losing baseball team!” She went to George Washington University in DC for her undergraduate degree, and the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor for her masters. She needed a doctorate to continue doing what she loved to do (teaching in a university), so she obtained her doctorate in special education with a focus on deaf individuals at UCLA/Cal State LA. The University of Wisconsin was the lucky recipient of Linda’s teaching skills for a total of 23 years. With her extensive education, she says the most important thing she learned in school is “how to be an effective learner.” That must be why she has all those degrees! She and her hubby, Stan, celebrated 40 years of marriage in November. “It astonishes us daily,” she said about number of years they have been married. They have two children: daughter, Andrea, lives in Tampa with their 5-year-old grandson. Their son, David, lives in Ft. Collins, CO and is a student at Colorado State. So far, he has presented them with a granddog and grandcat.

“A cautiously optimistic but unendingly curious citizen of the world” is how Linda described herself. She thinks her friends would say she is “brutally honest, funny, and caring.” She is most proud of having earned her doctorate in special education. To have fun she likes biking, reading, baking, and hanging out with her husband and kids. She loves to do colored pencils and is “liking it more and more by the minute.” She feels she is still trying to master the delicacy of the pencil stroke. “I tend to be real heavy-handed; maybe it’s just a metaphor but I’m trying to lighten up. I want to improve my basic techniques and I’ve got a ways to go.” I would like to learn watercolor pencils, develop skills on different surfaces and textures, and be able to manipulate different mediums better. Fortunately, there are many people I can turn to for advice. “This community is so rich in the talent of artists, I feel like a kid in candy store.”

By Helen Gromadzki

This month’s tips and techniques come from Cecile Baird’s book, “Painting Light with Colored Pencil”. She is a

signature member of the Colored Pencil Society of America, and her work has been published in The American Artist Magazine, International Artist, and North Light magazine and more.

Here are a few of her tips…

Wax Bloom: One result of burnishing with wax-based

pencils is an occurrence called wax bloom. After an area has been burnished for a while, the wax migrates to the surface and forms a grayish film. It is particularly noticeable in dark areas. You can easily correct this by buffing the area with a soft cloth or tissue and spraying it with a fixative. Wait until the entire picture is done before using the fixative, as it will give a nice, overall sheen to the picture.

Do the Background First. When creating a

dark background, it’s a good idea to do it first. The layers and the heavy pressure used to make darks create a lot of staining pencil dust. Even with constant brushing, the rest of your drawing may need to be cleaned. If a light object is already drawn with light colors, it could easily be stained by the background dust and will be almost impossible to clean.

TIPS AND TECHNIQUES

1. Orange Delight is one of Cecile Baird’s colored pencil

paintings. It ,and many other examples of her work ,are shown on her website, www.cecilebairdart.com.

Burnish Light Colors with White. Generally, when you use light colors, you can’t layer too densely or your color becomes too dark. Fewer layers mean less color. Less color causes colorless blenders to leave a grainy look. White blends the light layered colors better for a smoother look.

Use Tape to Define your Outer Edge. Since the background will be blended with solvent, you might find it helpful to define the outer edge of the picture frame with white artist’s tape as many watercolor artists do. Then you can brush the solvent right over the edge of the tape and still keep a nice crisp edge when the tape is removed. Remove the tape as soon as your background is finished. Do NOT use regular masking tape, as it may peel off the surface of your paper if left on too long before removal.

Be Careful with Colorless Blender. Keep your pencil point clean and work from light into dark when using the colorless blender over dark colors to avoid dragging the darks where you don’t want them.

Get Smooth Edges. When using the pencil around

the edges of flowers, dip your sharp pencil point into a little solvent and then draw. This will give you a nice smooth edge.

Keep your Erasers Clean. Be sure to remove the color left on any eraser before you use it in a different area. You can very quickly smear the old color over your drawing instead of erasing. Rub your eraser on the back of your paper to clean it.

Happy Holidays

and Happy Painting!

The Art-Matters is a custom matting business run by Jan Baldwin and Lee Murphy. Both are Village residents, and they are touting reasonable

rates. You may call either of them for a quote. Lee's number is 352 -817-3130, and Jan's is 352- 430-3442. Jan is one half of the couple that is buying our house and is now the proud owner of Jim Nazzaro's professional mat cutter, so expect great things. I know we are always looking for mats, so give them a try sometime. The CPPG people are always looking for framing alternatives so this may be something for them. I know Jan is a new member of the VAA, so expect to see her there.

WHAT IS THIS ANIMAL?

(SO COMMON IN THE VILLAGES)

Early American settlers called bison “bufello” due to the similar appearance between the two animals, and the name "buffalo" stuck for the American variety. But it's wrong.

It is actually a bison. The American Bison lives only in North

America, while the two main buffalo species reside in Africa and Asia.
