Dear Parents,

Term three has been a long and busy one and it seems to have been mostly wet and muddy underfoot, let’s hope the holiday weather will let the kids get outside and use up lots of pent up energy from the last 11 weeks.

Term four is very short, but there is a lot to fit in. There are some exciting outdoor education visits planned as well as the usual academic end of year expectations to complete so it will be very busy.

Please be reminded that to help us with planning for 2013 we need to know as soon as possible if your child/ren are not attending Tauranga Primary School next year.

National Standards:It has been interesting to follow the recent release of schools’ National Standards data. Hekia Parata says the data shows that nationwide 76 per cent reached or exceeded the national standard for reading, 72 per cent of learners for mathematics, and 68 per cent for writing.

Tauranga Primary School results from 2011 show that: 74% of our students were achieving at or above the National Standard in Writing 74% of our students are achieving at or above the National Standard in Reading, and 79% of our students are achieving at or above the National Standard in in Mathematics. It is pleasing to see that this data shows our students are performing at, or above the national average (against National Standards targets)

The Ministry of Education’s aim is to lift the number of students achieving at or above National Standards in Writing, Reading and Maths to 85% over the next four years. We are already using our data to identify the learning needs of specific students and putting programmes in place that will assist individuals to make progress.

Our main concern regarding National Standards is that they remain open to interpretation and that they are not measured consistently across schools. With summer fast approaching we notice that more children are walking and/or riding their bikes to school , this is great! We have also noticed an increase in children riding scooters. If your child is riding a scooter to school we ask that you ensure they wear a bike helmet, even though this is not a legal requirement we believe it is necessary safety wise. Scooters need to be kept in the bike shed and should be able to be locked similar to a bike.

Congratulations to Makaylah Rae-Potene who was runner up in the WBOP Speech finals.

It’s been a great hockey season this year, and the TPS Stars battling it out in the A3 Final was a great way to finish! TPS Stars played a fantastic final, but were unfortunately beaten by a stronger all boys Rudolf Steiner team. Congratulations Stars on an awesome season!! Special mention to the following players: ! Most Valuable Player – Nathan King, !! ! Most Improved Player – Rachel Weston.

Our other 3 hockey teams performed well all season also. It was the first time our teams were lucky enough to train on TBC Hockey Turf (or unlucky, as trainings were at 7:30am Wednesday mornings!!) But, the opportunity to practice on this fantastic venue was beneficial as huge improvements in skill were seen and this was matched with their enthusiasm and fair play on the turf. Well done to all our hockey players with a special mention to the following athletes who received awards:

TPS Ministicks!! ! TPS Ferns! ! ! TPS FlyersMost Valuable Player:! ! Rosie Kneale! ! ! Amber Trusler! ! ! Olivia BrownMost Improved Player:!! Mia Manuel-Ruawai! ! Grace Camplin! ! ! Lauren Beekie

I would also like to congratulate Charlotte Watson. Charlotte received an award recently for the highest score for all 8 year olds at the Tauranga Hockey Skills Day. This day involved all hockey players in the Tauranga Region. Way to go Charlotte!!

Our year 5 Hockey Team played in the WBOP 7s Championships last week. They were the only all girl team at the tournament and these girls played with so much heart. They never gave up and were always hungry for the ball. They finished 4th overall and should be super proud of their efforts. The team consisted of Olivia Brown, Maddison Presley, Amber Trusler, Grace Camplin, Alexis Moor, Mari Stevens, Angela Strang, Lauren Beekie, Bella Coulter and Aylah King. Check out some action photos on the school website!!

The TPS Tall Blacks Basketball team had their last game a couple of weeks ago. These boys had a great season, finishing in 3rd place in the Friday night league. Well done boys!! And big congratulations to:! Most Valuable Player – Logan Brill! ! Most Improved Player – George Griffin

I would like to thank all coaches, managers, and supporters for your generosity throughout the winter sport season. We greatly appreciate the support and know that it would not happen without you!!

Over the last few weeks all of the classes on the senior side have been partaking in an inter-class turbo touch competition. There is nothing like playing against other classes to spark some competitive spirit!! The competition has been great; the kids have not only learnt a new game, but they have been getting active and strengthening friendships with their class mates. But of course there had to be a Champion class!! Congratulations to Room 10 for taking out the Senior Syndicate and Room 5 who won the Middle Syndicate!!!!

Blue Rovers Football Club had their prize giving recently. A big congratulations to the following players who were all part of the team to win the “Outstanding Team Achievement” Trophy. Blake Anderson, Riley Watson, Luke Stamatakos, Helen Cooke and Kelly Roberts. Blake Anderson also received the “Player of the Year” trophy. Well done Blake!! PAIGE ROBINSON was also "playing of the year" for her Grade 9 scoccer team at blue rovers.

Waipuna Football Club 8th grade players who were recognised at their recent prizegiving were:Most Valuable Player - Thomas Hawes, Jamie Dobson. Most Improved - Jeffery Park

Matthew Robinson, Reuben Parekowhai-Gudex and Jordan Smith were selected for WBOP Football Rep teams

Have a relaxing holiday, so you’re ready to hit the summer sports season!!!
