Dear Parents, This week has been very exciting for our children in Grades 3 & 4 . They are beginning to receive their new Tablet Laptops. Already we are seeing how competent they are in using their new devices and how very keen they are to show us all what they have learnt. The take-up of the 1:1 Tablet program this year has been unbelievable with over 95% of children in LC3 involved in this program. Thank you to everyone for their patience in waiting for them to be delivered. Children will receive the Tablets once the first instalment has been paid. SCHOOL COUNCIL Your School Council for 2014 is: President Mr Daud Ally Vice President Mrs Nicole Gillies Treasurer Mrs Sue Robyns Ass. Treasurer Ms Amanda Prosser Secretary Mrs Petra Tonkin Minute Sec. Mr Ben Eilenberg Executive Officer Mr Tony Bryant Council Members include: Mr Ian Hallett, Mrs Julie Liagourdis, Mrs Julie McCrimmon, Mr Ansu Francis, Ms Sue Birkbeck, Mrs Loretta Sutherland, Mr Leigh Clement. CAMP Grade 6 children left for their Camp last Monday. Already we are hearing what a wonderful time they are having. Later this Term the Grade 4 children will also be attending their Camp. PARENT CONTRIBUTION 2014 Thank you to all those families who have paid or have made arrangements to pay the 2014 Parent Contribution. By paying these contributions you will enable us to support our children’s learning by supplying the necessary resources they need. Our school’s Parent Contributions are very low compared with other schools such as secondary schools, local primary schools, government and non-government schools. We know of some schools who charge up to four times the amount we ask for. It is very important that you make arrangements to pay this if you haven’t already done so. MICROSOFT WORLD FORUM Next week Ms Prosser and myself have been invited to the Microsoft World Forum in Barcelona to present to world educators about our school. Microsoft has recognised that our school is one of the most innovative schools in the world and would like schools from different countries to learn from our experiences. This is great recognition of our school and something our school community should be very proud of. We are also taking the opportunity to visit a number of schools in Spain to see what they are doing. I am sure we will have some great ideas to bring back to school on our return. Hope everyone has a wonderful week. Regards
Tony

‘Well-Child’ CARE: A Check-Up for Success
What can you do to help your child’s development and learning? Taking your child to the GP / Doctor for an allergic reaction, an ear infection, or laboured breathing is only one type of visit. A Paediatrician is a doctor who specialises in dealing with children. Some parents may visit a Paediatrician for routine scheduled vaccinations or to see how much their child has grown in the past few months – this can be especially true when our children are newborns or infants. Even in the Primary years and beyond however, a paediatrician may just be the right specialist to provide that missing piece of the puzzle. Maybe there’s energy or sleep problems
If we stop to think about it, raising children is a rewarding gift but also, a full-time demanding responsibility. So taking the opportunity to check-in with a specialist doctor can offer the chance to raise questions and concerns about your child’s development, behaviour, and general well-being — questions that are difficult to discuss during sick visits. For instance, paediatricians are used to discussing common concerns with parents such as eating, sleeping, toilet training, social behaviours, as well as attention and learning problems. Having regular ‘well-child’ visits with your child’s doctor and raising the concerns that matter most to you are key ingredients in helping the doctor know you and your child, and in forming a reliable and trustworthy relationship. Common themes between parents and specialist children’s doctors emerge:
Paediatricians and parents share the goal of healthy children.
Paediatricians want the well-child visit to best serve the needs of children and their families.
Paediatricians are experts in child health, but parents are experts on their child.
A team approach can best develop optimum physical, emotional & developmental child health
Any question that reflects your concern about your child’s development, behaviour, sleep, eating or relations with other members of the family is appropriate. Talk to others who care for your child — the other parent, a grandparent, child caregiver, teacher — and ask for their input. They may notice something different to offer a new perspective.
“Asking what you can do to help your child’s development and learning is probably the best question.”
Doctors and Specialist Doctors say that Parents shouldn’t hesitate or feel embarrassed to share information that further opens the doors of communication. As your child’s most important advocate, you have valuable information that will help your doctor better understand your child and your family. A lot of parents may not realize that they can ask about any and everything related to the care of their child — medical or not. Paediatricians also address safety in the home and at the playground, optimal nutrition, toilet training, and environmental concerns.
Talking about what you see as either a special trait or a concern about your child, is recommended. This helps your paediatrician get to know you and your child on a more personal level. We can all use positive feedback and paediatricians also like to know how much you appreciate their care. This helps build a stronger bond with your family. Other ideas include researching Web sites, pamphlets, and books that describe age-specific developmental skills and typical issues your child may be experiencing. Knowing what to expect can help the new feel more familiar (and less scary); but be wary of applying everything to your own child, comparing them to others too readily or coming up with your own diagnosis. Discuss the benefits for your child in sharing this information with your child’s school. In the school setting, teachers will appreciate any extra insight you are able to provide that may assist the general wellbeing and development of children in their social, emotional and academic learning. All reports are treated confidentially. Take some time to meet with the Assistant Principal who will filter the information sensitively through the correct channels. Good, open communication is the key to building a trusting partnership.
Thank you for taking the time to read these messages
