HOLY CHILD PARISH BRIDGEVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA

These forty days of Lent, O God, we give our storms to you. Open our eyes to see your rainbow and renew our lives. Help us trust in your promise that you will

remember the covenant you made with us.

Lenten Speaker Series: Unless You Turn: Join us tomorrow night, Monday, February 19th at Holy Child for the first of our three Lenten speaker events featuring Matthew Leonard, Vice President and Executive Producer of the St. Paul Center for Biblical Theology and father of six. Matt will share his powerful (and often hilarious) journey from Protestant pastor’s kid and Latin America missionary to finding the fullness of truth in the teachings of the Catholic Church. It’s a dynamic conversion story that will leave you in awe of God’s providence, the power of Our Lady, and the gift of Holy Mother Church. Refreshments to follow in our Religious Education Center.

This Is the Time of Fulfillment: The season of Lent is our yearly spiritual journey with Jesus through his passion, death and resurrection. As a community of faith we mark those important moments

along the road to Calvary where Jesus revealed the immense depth of God’s love for us. Individually, we choose to immerse ourselves in deeper prayer, the suffering of fasting and increased good works so that we might have our hearts transformed and made ever more like God’s so that we can continue to reflect his great love

in the world. This is a task that cannot wait. While we hope that heaven awaits us at a time still to come, we are called to ready ourselves now and be firmly set on the path to salvation. On Mission for The Church Alive! seeks to strengthen our communities of faith so that we might have every help and opportunity to be prepared for the Kingdom of God. May we be prepared during this time of fulfillment for all that God will work for us and through us. Visit onmissionchurchalive.org to learn more and to stay informed.

Parish Share 2018: This past week we mailed all registered parishioner the 2018 pledge card, letter, and brochure. It is very important that we receive your participation in this year’s campaign to reach our goal of $84,212.00. There is no gift too large or too small. Because of everyone’s past support we have always made and exceeded our goal and we look forward to another very successful Parish Share Campaign. If by chance you have not received this year’s mailing, call the parish office.

Youth Group: All High Schoolers are invited to the St. Barbara/Holy Child Youth Group Event this Sunday, February 18 from 6:00-7:30 PM at St. Barbara Parish Hall for Wings, a Faith Discussion, and Games.

Young Adults: All Young adults are invited to LaBella Bean for Trivia Night on Thursday, February 22nd with Tony Ferguson and Nick Sciarappa. No cost. Beer, Wine, Appetizers provided.

Holy Child Lenten Fish Fry: Join us for our annual Lenten Fish Fry. We will be cooking and serving our breaded fried fish, beer battered fish, baked fish, and our awesome sides of halushki, pierogies, mac ‘n cheese, French fries, coleslaw, stewed tomatoes and mixed

vegetables every Friday during Lent except Good Friday. Lunch will be served from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM, with a limited menu of fish sandwiches, French fries, pierogies, and coleslaw. Dinner will be from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM. We also have cheese pizza for the kids as well as our famous Knight’s Feast sandwich for those with a hearty appetite. Call ahead for your take-out order, 412-221-6514, or order online at www.holychildrcparish.org. If you are interested in working at the Fish Fry, call Mark Zik, 412-265-7533.

2018 Baby Bottle Campaign: Holy Child Christian Mothers will be handing out baby bottles after all Masses the weekend of March 3 & 4. Please take one home and return it filled with your spare change on the weekend of March 17 & 18. Your donation will support “Human Coalition”, which operates the Pittsburgh Women’s Clinic, formerly known as the Pregnancy Resource Center of the South Hills. Did you know that at 21 days a baby’s heart begins to beat? At 1 month, the baby’s organs and body parts are developing, and at 8 weeks the baby’s brain and nerve endings are formed. The typical client is coming into our clinics around 7-8 weeks pregnant and is considering an abortion. We can show her the life God created through an ultrasound image. This ultrasound image changes her heart from contemplating abortion to choosing life 90% of the time. When you fill a bottle, you are helping rescue children and serve families!. Please make checks payable to “Human Coalition”. All proceeds support the local activity in Pittsburgh.

Reflecting on the Word I once saw a beautiful double rainbow break through dark storm clouds. Seeing that rainbow comforted me. I sensed the presence of a recently deceased friend and I felt the nearness of God. Rainbows remind me to look for calm after a storm and find God near. God promised: “When I bring clouds over the earth, and the bow appears in the clouds, I will recall the cove-nant I have made between me and you and all living be-ings” (Genesis 9:14-15a). The rainbow reminds God, and us, of that promise. In Baptism we enter into a relationship with God. In baptism we put to death whatever is not of God, “the flesh” in St. Paul. In baptism we promise to live by the Spirit. Lent is a rainbow of renewal, wherein God reminds us of the promise never again to destroy all mor-tal beings. During Lent we enter the desert with Jesus to hear him say to us: “This is the time of fulfillment. The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel” (Mark 1:15). Repent! Reflect on the floodwaters of sin that keep you from believing God is here. Repent! Renew your baptis-mal promise to live Jesus. Repent! Name your storms that cloud over God’s unconditional, merciful love. Ask Jesus for help to find the rainbows of forgiveness and new life that often follow those storms. Our example will give hope to those preparing for Baptism at the Easter Vigil. St. Francis de Sales taught that life happens. Whatever hap-pens, God is with us. Look for God’s rainbows that pro-claim: God is here! God will not destroy you! Repent! Turn away from sin and believe in the Gospel. Living the Word Scripture Reflections and Commentaries for Sun-days and Holy Days. Year B

Sunday Contributions For February 11, 2018: Regular Collection $11,106.00 Add’l Christmas Collection $ 10.00 Thank you one and all for your continued generosity and support of our parish community.

Thank You from Bridgeville Area Food Bank: To the Parishioners of Holy Child Parish: Thank you for your very generous food & monetary donations during the year of 2017. It is the kindness and community spirit of people like you that allow the doors of the Food Bank to remain open. Please know that your donation will help to provide much needed food for those less fortunate than ourselves. Your thoughtfulness is greatly appreciated. The Bridgeville Area Food Bank is an all volunteer mission serving the needy families in our area, operating through donations and food drives. We could not assist those in need each month without the donations and support of individuals, churches and businesses in our local communities. May God bless you!

College Discernment Night: Are you wondering what to do with your life? Do you think that God might be calling you in a unique way? Come learn how to better hear His voice at the College Discernment Night, Monday, March 19 from 5:45 PM to 8:30 PM at St. Paul Seminary. Father Mike Ackerman will speak on discernment, and the night will include prayer, dinner with the seminarians, and fellowship. All college and post-college men welcome. To register, email [email protected] by March 12.

We extend our condolences to the family of Francis B. Goldbach who was buried from Holy Child Parish. May he rest in

peace in the kingdom of God. May his family and friends know the faithfulness of Christ’s love.

A Family Perspective (by Bud Ozar): Jesus went into the desert to put his life in perspective. This lent, take a fresh look at a difficult relationship in your life. Concentrate on the positive things that person does, not just the negatives. Try to understand why their behaviors ‘bug’ you. Can you honestly share your feelings with them without attacking them? Make Lent a time to MEND and FORGIVE!
