HOLY CHILD PARISH BRIDGEVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA
Holy God, you gave our ancestors manna in the desert and you continue to offer us bread from heaven. Help us express our gratitude for that bread of life by
feeding those we meet with your presence, which notices their hungers and shares your gifts with them.
Do Not Work for Food that Perishes but for the Food that Endures for Eternal Life: God, in his providence, created the world and everything
in it. He made it all very good and, as he sets us forth into the world to enjoy the beauty and substance of his creation. However, the created world is not meant to be a distraction from God, but rather that which draws us ever deeper into the mystery of his Fatherly love for us. His greatest gift to us, and that which unites us most fully to him, is the gift of himself in the Eucharist. Under the appearance of humble bread and wine, Jesus comes to us as nourishment and strength. However, this food not only nurtures our bodies, but our souls as well, enlivening us as we make our pilgrim journey to heaven. From the Eucharist flows the life and mission of the Church as, united in Holy Communion we are formed as the Body of Christ to do his will on earth. As the implementation of the On Mission for The Church Alive! initiative draws near, may we not be distracted by the things of this world that will ultimately pass away, but instead focus on the Eucharist as we are united in faith and walk together to eternal life. Visit onmissionchurchalive.org to learn more and to stay informed.

Reflecting on the Word We have often sung the concluding words of today’s Gospel: “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst,” The crowd mistakenly thought that Moses gave their ancestors the bread of heaven. The Israelites need-ed the reminder that the Lord gave them bread to eat. Like them, we can forget that Jesus feeds us to become one with us, and bake us into bread for others. Too often we mistakenly view the Eucharist as something meant only for us to receive. We forget that celebrating the Eu-charist transforms us to become what we eat and drink, the Body of Blood of Christ. We get so caught up in the sign of Christ’s “Real Presence,” we forget that Jesus feeds us to become really present to others through the way we live. Like the Ephesians, we need renewal. We need to put on a new self and live in righteousness and truth so oth-ers can find the words that come from the mouth of God in our witness. Today’s Collect reminds us that we are the Lord’s servants. Jesus feeds us with his very self to be-come what we eat, the Bread of Life, broken in service. Jesus quenches our thirst to become what we drink, the Blood of Christ, poured out in love. When we become what we eat and drink, we declare the glorious deeds of the Lord and make the wonders God has wrought visible. When we are fed by God with food that endures forever, then through us people can come to Jesus and never hunger or thirst again. A Family Perspective (by Bud Ozar): In today’s gos-pel Jesus tells us: “Do not work for what perishes.” Give your life to what endures such as the family history you are creating, the love and mutual respect which bonds you to-gether, the memories you share and the forgiveness gener-ously given. These are the true treasures that are worth working and dying for.
