Dear ACerS member,
Welcome to ACerS 121st Annual Meeting at MS&T19!
As the largest materials science conference in the United States, MS&T brings together more than 3,000 materials scientists and engineers from around the world to share the latest research and information on ceramics, glass, steel, and other materials. We are excited to be in Portland this year, and I hope you get a chance to explore the City of Roses on your free time.
Organizers have been hard at work putting together an entire week of activities, including a lineup of distinguished plenary speakers, an outstanding technical program, social functions, networking opportunities, student events, and more. I hope that you take advantage of the wealth of technical knowledge and the numerous opportunities to make lasting connections and contacts that will be valuable to your career.
Make sure you plan to attend these ACerS award lectures this week:
• ACerS Navrotsky Award for Experimental Thermodynamics of Solids presented by Alexander Beutl, Institute of Inorganic Chemistry-Functional Materials, University of Vienna, Austria (Monday, 8:10–8:55 a.m., OCC – B119)
• ACerS/EPDC: Arthur L. Friedberg Ceramic Engineering Tutorial and Lecture presented by Kathleen Richardson, University of Central Florida, USA (Monday 9–10 a.m., OCC – Portland Ballroom 253)
• ACerS Richard M. Fulrath Award Session presented by Manubu Fukushima, National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology, Japan; Keigo Suzuki, Murata Manufacturing Co. Ltd., Japan; Ronald Polcawich, Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, USA; Koichiro Morita, Taiyo Yuden Co. Ltd., Japan; and Vilas Pol, Purdue University, USA (Monday 2–4:40 p.m., OCC – Portland Ballroom 253)
• Edward Orton Jr. Memorial Lecture (part of the plenary session) presented by Minoru Tomozawa, professor, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, USA (Tuesday 8–10:40 a.m., OCC – Portland Ballroom 251/257/258)
• ACerS Frontiers of Science and Society – Rustum Roy Lecture presented by Jennifer Lewis, Harvard University, USA (Tuesday 1–2 p.m., OCC – Portland Ballroom 253)
• ACerS GOMD Alfred R. Cooper Award Session presented by Kathleen Richardson, University of Central Florida, USA (Tuesday, 2–4:40 p.m., OCC – A106)
• 2019 Alfred R. Cooper Young Scholar Award Presentation presented by Wataru Takeda, Coe College, USA (Tuesday, 2–4:40 p.m., OCC – A106)
• ACerS Basic Science Division Robert B. Sosman Lecture presented by Yury Gogotsi, Drexel University, USA (Wednesday, 1–2 p.m., OCC – Portland Ballroom 253)
Also, plan to drop by the ACerS member lounge to connect with other ACerS members and relax between sessions. If you’re a new member or haven’t already updated your ACerS member profile, ask a staff member to help you log in to your ACerS account to make sure your profile is up to date.
There will be plenty of action in the exhibit hall! Make sure you visit the exhibitors, who will be demonstrating their latest products and services on Tuesday and Wednesday. While in the exhibit hall, stop by the student poster session and stick around to watch the lively ceramic mug drop and disc golf contests.
Finally, I invite you to attend ACerS Annual Business Meeting on Monday, 1–2 p.m. in the OCC – Portland Ballroom 253. This is a great opportunity to hear what’s going on in your Society and provide your suggestions and ideas to improve the future of the Society.
Mark Mecklenborg Executive Director
P.S. Mark your calendars for ACerS Annual Meeting at MS&T in 2020 and 2021. Organized by ACerS, AIST, and TMS, MS&T will take place October 4–8, 2020 in Pittsburgh, Pa., and October 17–21, 2021 in Columbus, Ohio. MS&T: Where Materials Innovation Happens.

The new slate of ACerS officers has been determined. There were no contested offices and no write-in candidates, automatically making all nominees “elected.” ACerS rules eliminate the need to prepare a ballot or hold an election when only one name is put forward for each office. The new term will begin October 3, 2019, at the conclusion of the Annual Business Meeting at MS&T.
