Ashahado Al Lailaha Illallaho Wahdahu La Sharika Lahu

Wa Ashahado Anna Muhammadan Abdohu Wa Rasulah.

I bear witness that there is none worthy of worship except

Allah, the One without any partner. And I bear wit- ness

that Muhammad PBUH is His servant and His messenger. I

affirm that I shall always be ready to sacrifice my life,

property, time and children for the cause of faith and the

community. I shall always adhere to truth and shall al-

Dear Sisters, Assalam o Alaikum Warahmatullah Wabarakatuhu.

By the grace of Allah, the Almighty, the Annual Taleem syllabus and Program has been compiled. This year the Lajna syllabus is comprised of one level according to your feedback, so that Lajna members can continue learning easily.

As it was last year, our task is to learn the correct recitation of the

Holy Quran, Translation & Tafseer or commentaries of the Holy

Quran as well as the memorization of specific surahs (chapters) and

Quranic prayers.

Namaz, Hadith and the Books of the Promised Messiah AS are also

one of the main focuses of the syllabus. For the enhancement of

religious knowledge and spiritual advancement we have added

Jurisprudence and a brief insight into the history of Islam.

Special competitions include Essay writing competition, Seyyada

Nusrat Jehan Begum RA Award (which has 3 stages this year. Stage

1 is for beginners, stage 2 is for those members who have

completed stage 1 last year and stage 3 is for those members who

have completed stage 2 last year).

There will be a competition to learn the translation of the Holy

Quran (has 2 stages) and a competition to memorize of Poems of

the Promised Messiah AS.

Participation in these competitions is optional, however, your participation will be highly appreciated. Not only will your participation benefit you, but it will also encourage others to take part in these competitions.

4

We hope and pray that you will benefit from this syllabus and that

it will increase your knowledge and help you earn the pleasure of

Allah.

41

JURISPRUDENCE /

FIQAHI MASAIL

42

43

JURISPRUDENCE/FIQAHI MASAIL

SALAT

CONDITIONS OF SALAT

The prayer has shuroot (conditions), arkaan (pillars),

and wajibaat (requirements). It also has things that are

sunnah (recommended), and things that are makrooh

(disliked). Then there are things that are generally

permissible to be done in the salat. These are the things

that are necessary for the validation of the salat and for

this reason a believer should not remain ignorant about

them. The conditions are prerequisites that have to be

met before a person begins their salat. They have to be

met in order for the salat to be valid. If a person does not

fulfill anyone of these conditions for any reason,

whether it be due to ignorance, forgetfulness, or

intentionally does not do them, then their salat is invalid.

Once a person realizes that he/she missed a condition

they should repeat that salat. The conditions of salat are

following five:

1. Time

2. The removal of impurities

3. The covering of one's Awrah 4. Facing the Qiblah 5. Intention

44

COMMENCEMENT OF TIME

The Prayer should be offered within the fixed time allotted for that particular Prayer.

THE REMOVAL OF IMPURITIES

1. The body should be clean from all filth. 2. Clothing should be clean. 3. The place and mat of Prayer must be neat and clean.

THE COVERING OF ONE'S AWRAH

During Prayer, one's body should be decently covered.

In case of men, this can be defined as an area of body

beginning from the navel down to the end of the knee-

cap.

As far as women are concerned, they should cover their

entire body, including their arms but excluding the

hands and feet. However, when praying at home or

among other women, they do not have to cover their

faces

FACING THE QIBLAH

All Muslims must face towards the Ka'aba during the

prayer. Qibla is the Ka'aba in Makkah, the first house of

worship built on earth.

THE INTENTION

To perform a Prayer must be made prior to the

beginning of the Prayer

45

COMMON QUESTIONS ABOUT SALAT

Q1. IS IT PERMISSIBLE TO PRAY SALAT IN A DARK PLACE?

Yes, it is permissible and proved from Books of Hadith that holy

Prophet PBUH himself offered salt in the dark.

Q2. WHAT IS PROSTRATION OF FORGETFULNESS OR SAJIDA

SAHUVE AND WHEN AND HOW IT SHOULD BE OFFERED?

The prostration of forgetfulness is:

Two prostrations that the one praying makes in order to

compensate for mistakes occurring in the prayer due to

forgetfulness. Sajida Sahuve causes are three: 1. Having added something. 2. Having omitted something. 3. Having been in a state of doubt.

There are times in our prayers when we may forget something,

or we may have doubt that we have completed an action, etc. In

this situation the Prophet PBUH

commanded such a person to

perform two prostrations before giving the salutation.

Q3. CAN SOMEONE COMPLETE HIS SUNAT PRAYER IF THE

CONGREGATIONAL PRAYER HAS STARTED?

Once the congregational Prayer has begun, one should not

commence with Sunnat and Nafl Prayer. If someone is already

engaged in Sunnat Prayer when the Imam starts the Prayer, and he

finds himself in the middle of a row formed for the congregational

Prayer, he should terminate his Prayer immediately and join in the

congregation. If he is offering his Sunnat or Nafl Prayer away

from the Prayer Service and he thinks that he can join in the

congregation without losing much of the first Rak'at, he may

complete his Prayer; otherwise he

should terminate his Prayer and join the congregation.

Q4. WHEN A PERSON OFFERS HIS MISSED FAJAR PRAYER,

46

DOES HE NEED TO OFFER SUNAT PRAYER BEFORE FARZ?

If a person missed Fajr prayer and he has to offer Fajr as a QAZA

(missed), then he should start with the Sunnah prayer and offer

farz of fajar after offering Sunat. It is only for Fajar prayr, for all

other (QAZA) missed prayers has to offer only farz raka’at (not

Sunah).

Q5. CAN LADIES OFFER PRAYER WEARING HALVE SLEEVES

SHIRTS?

No, for women, arms are one of the body parts which must be covered during the prayer. So in halve sleeves salat is imperfect.

Q6. IF A PERSON COMES IN THE MOSQUE AND FINDS THAT

CONGREGATIONAL PRAYER IS ALREADY STARTED, WHAT

SHOULD HE DO?

If the Prayer has already started, the latecomer should join in the

congregation in the position in which he finds them. For example,

if they are in the Standing position, he should start his Prayer in

standing position but if they are prostrating, he should join the

congregation in prostration. When the Imam ends the

congregational Prayer by saying the Salutation, i.e; Assalamu

'Alaikum wa Rahmatullah and turning his face towards the right

and towards the left, the person who joined the Prayer later should

go into Qiyam position and complete the missed Raka'at of his

Prayer individually.

Q7. CAN NAFIL BE OFFERED BETWEEN SUNAT AND FARZ OF

FAJAR PRAYER?

No. it is forbidden to offer nafil between sunah and faraz of fajar

even after faraz till the sun is raised fully.

Q8. IS IT PERMISSIBLE TO RECITE THE QURANIC PRAYERS IN

RAKU AND SUJOOD?

Reciting Quranic prayers in raku and sujood is not allowed. Raku

and sujood both positions are a state of supplication. Quranic

47

prayers demand dignity, so someone is not allowed to recite the

Holy Quran in these positions.

Q9. IS IT NECESSARY DURING THE PRAYER TO KEEP THE

QURANIC RECITATION IN ORDER?

Yes, it is necessary because the Quranic order is guided and set

by Allah. Ignoring the Quranic order makes the prayer fasid

(corrupt).

Q10. DURING FRIDAY SERMON, IS IT PERMISSIBLE TO DRINK

WATER, OFFERING WATER TO SOMEONE ELSE OR ASKING

FOR WATER FROM SOMEONE ELSE?

No all three scenarios are not allowed during the Friday sermon as

the Friday sermon is a part of Friday prayer and a substitutes for

two farz of Zuhar.

48

FUNERAL

49

MANNER OF BATHING A DECEASED PERSON

When it seems that someone is approaching his time of death,

people around him (such as family or friends) should recite the

Surah Yaaseen (Ch. 36 of the Holy Quran).

After someone’s demise, the eyes of the deceased should be closed

by hand and a cloth band should be used round his chin and head

so that his mouth is closed.

THE BODY SHOULD BE BATHED IN THE FOLLOWING MANNER:

Fresh or lukewarm water should be used to wash the body three

times. The practice of the Holy Prophet PBUH was to put some

leaves of a Beri (Name of a tree) in the water for washing the dead

body. First of all, those limbs, which are washed during normal

Wudhu (Ablutions), should be washed though it is not required to

pour water in the mouth or nostrils to clean them or to wash the

feet. Next the body should be washed, first the right side and then

the left. Private parts of the body should remain covered by a cloth.

Men alone can bathe male persons and women alone can bathe

female persons. The body should then be wrapped in a shroud,

which normally is made of an in- expensive white cloth. The

shroud for men consists of three pieces of cloth; a top sheet to

cover the top part of the body, a bottom sheet to cover the lower

part and a large sheet to cover the whole body from head to feet.

For a female, however, two additional pieces of cloth are used, one

for her chest and the other for her head. Islam instructs that one

should arrange the burial with utmost simplicity

FUNERAL PRAYER

The Imam commences the Prayer by saying Allahu Akbar, i.e;

Allah is the Greatest, loudly. The followers say the same in a low

50

tone. The Imam then recites Thanaa and Surah Fatiha silently. He

then says Allahu Akbar without raising his hand. The followers say

Allahu Akbar too but in a low tone. Then, the whole congregation

recites Durood silently. After that the Imam says Allahu Akbar for

the third time audibly and the particular prayers for the deceased as

given below are recited. The Imam thensays Allahu Akbar for the

fourth time and, turning his face towards the right says Assalam-o-

Alaikum-wa-Rahmatullah, and turning his face towards the left

repeats the same to mark the end of the Prayer. The followers, too,

say Assalam-o-Alaikum-wa- Rahmatullah, in a low tone and also

turn their faces to the right and left. There is no Ruku or Prostration

in the Funeral Prayer

THE HISTORY OF ISLAM

THE HISTORY OF ISLAM

COMMENCEMENT OF PROPHETHOOD

The Holy Prophet PBUH used to go to the Cave of Hira as a routine,

where he would worship God in his own manner. Holy dreams had

already begun by this time. The Holy Prophet (saws) spent 6 months

doing the same. He had reached the age of 40 and his age and personality

had matured enough for Prophethood. Once during these times when it

was a Monday in the last 10 days of Ramadan, and the Holy Prophet PBUH was busy in worship as usual, an angel, Hazrat Jibraeel AS appeared

before him and said: “Read” meaning recite so that you can deliver it to

people. The Holy Prophet PBUH replied" یما انا بقار But I can’t read”۔

On hearing this, Hazrat Jibraeel as held the Holy Prophet PBUH hugged

him tight and then said once more, اقرا " " Read”. The Holy Prophet PBUH

had the same reply. Hazrat Jibraeel as held him tight to his chest again

and s " قراا '" Read” but the Holy Prophet PBUH had the same reply. Hazrat

Jibraeeel as then repeated his action for the third time (as if he was

trying to reach his heart through this action. Once Hazrat Jibraeelas was

convinced that the Holy Prophet PBUH was ready to accept his message)

he released him from the hug and said “Read” and then disappeared.

The Holy Prophet PBUH was very disturbed by this incident, worrying

what had just happened and what was to happen next. The Holy Prophet PBUH rushed home and exclaimed to Khadija rz “Cover me with a cloth,

Cover me with a cloth” Hazrat Khadija rz covered him with a piece of

cloth. Once the Holy Prophet PBUH felt settled, he said to Hazrat Khadijha rz “I am scared of myself”

Hazrat Khadija rz

consoled the Holy Prophet PBUH that God would never

disgrace a man as pious and virtuous as him. She took him to her cousin

Waraqah bin Naufal. Waraqah bin Naufal was an aged religious scholar.

He had lost his eyesight. He had given up shirk and accepted

Christianity. He also had knowledge of the prophets before his time.

After listening to what had just happened with the Holy Prophet PBUH he

replied, “This is the same angel that used to bring revelations to Hazrat

Musa AS. Alas! I wish I could live for the time that your people

52

drive you out of your country. If I am alive then I will help you with all

my might “But Warqah bin Naufal passed away a little while after this

incident.

INTERRUPTION IN THE COURSE OF

REVELATION (FATRAT- UL–WAHY)

Revelations to the Holy Prophet PBUH came to a pause after this incident,

and according to a tradition, there was no revelation for about 40 days.

This is the called the period of " یالوح ۃفتر" or Interruption in the Course

of Revelation.

The Holy Prophet PBUH spent this time with great restlessness. He was

worried what the purpose of the coming of the angel was and if what

was revealed to him was indeed from God or just a fragment of his

imagination.

During this period, once when the Holy Prophet PBUH was on his way

back from the Cave of Hira, he heard a voice from the sky. When he

looked up, he saw the same angle seated in a glorious chair between the

earth and the sky. The Holy Prophet PBUH was fearful and headed home

in a hurry. On reaching home he said to Hazrat Khadija rz, “Cover me

with a cloth, cover me with a cloth”

Hazrat Khadija rz covered him up. As the he laid down, the Holy Prophet PBUH heard a voice from the sky and a verse of Surah al Mudathir was

revealed. After this revelation continued consistently.

COMMENCEMENT OF PREACHING

The Holy Prophet PBUH was now able to preach peacefully and

53

consistently, he therefore started inviting people toward the Unity of

54

God. He started preaching, very secretly, to only his family and close

friends.

THE HOLY PROPHET’S PBUH WAY OF TAKING BAIT

The Holy Prophet’s PBUH method of taking bait was such that he held the

hand of whoever wished to perform the bait, and recited with him the

acceptance of Islam. He also took a pledge of allegiance from the new

convert. The bait included accepting the Oneness of God, refraining from

associating partners with him, refraining from evil acts such as theft,

adultery, murder, and falsehood. The bait for ladies included the same

conditions; accept the Holy Prophet PBUH did not hold their hands, just

made them repeat the words of the bait after him. Purdah was particularly

taken care of while taking bait from ladies. After the commandment of

Purdah was revealed, men and women were not allowed to display their

beauty to each other, neither through the eyes, nor through touch.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION OF HOLY PROPHET PBUH

The Holy Quran and Ahadith present a detailed account of the morals,

character and life of the Holy Prophet PBUHA brief synopsis is presented

here in light of the above sources.

The Holy Prophet PBUH was a very strong, pleasant looking man of a

medium height. He had a large head, strong built, a long neck, thin nose,

prominent black eyes (which were often half closed), a wide forehead, long

thick eye lashes, teeth as bright white as pearls. His abdomen was level

with his chest. He had large fair colored hands and feet. His face was

rather round. He had no hair on his body, accept a line of hiar from this

chest t to his navel. On his back, between the shoulders, was a red level

piece of flesh, known as 'the Seal of Prophethood'

۔

The Holy Prophet’s PBUH hair was neither curly, nor were they entirely

55

straight, rather they were a little falcate, with their length usually

56

reaching the tip of his ears. The Holy Prophet PBUH often oiled his hair

and placed a cloth underneath his head covering. He would sometimes

comb his hair by parting them from one side, while sometimes he would

comb them all together. According to his companions, the Holy Prophet PBUH only had a few white hair close to his demise, which were only about

20 or so.

The Holy Prophet PBUH would often wear a sheet, but he preferred a

stitched kurta with long sleeves. He also used, pyjama, and sadree (clothes

filled with cotton wool) in winter, and used a towel after wudu.

The Holy Prophet PBUH also used a cap, but he would wear a amama or

Turban at Juma. He preferred white clothes, but also used red, green and

orange colours. He would offer 2 rakaats of prayer after wearing a new

dress and would give away his old clothing to the needy. He used leather

socks, and would pass his wet hands over them during wudu (masah). He

used leather shoes with 2 laces

In order to write letters to the king of Ajam (since the people of Ajam

only accepted letters with a stamp), Holy Prophet PBUH ordered a silver

ring to be made. One of the lines of that ring had Muhammad (saw),

another had Prophet and a third one had Allah written on it. The stone of

that ring was from the Ethiopian region. The Holy Prophet PBUH used to

wear this ring on his left hand and used it to stamp letters. After the death

of Holy Prophet PBUH this ring was used by Hadhrat Abu Bakar rz then

Hadhrat Umar rz and then Hadhrat Usman rz It was used until it fell into a

well named Arees.

Holy Prophet PBUH used to lean forward while walking and used to keep

his eyes down. Usually, He PBUH would go ahead of his companions while

walking and was always the first one to greet whomever he met on his

way.

The Holy Prophet PBUH had a very jovial manner. He liked jokes but his

jokes were always free of lies. He PBUH chose his words very carefully

57

while talking. He PBUH talked slowly, with clarity and comity. He PBUH

58

never talked unnecessarily and usually repeated his sentence three times.

Occasionally he would recite couplets as well. His laughter was usually

only a slight smile.

The Holy Prophet PBUH ate simple meals, such as bread made of wheat

flour. He PBUH would go many day on an empty stomach. At times, there

would be no cooking for a month and He PBUH would rely on just milk and

dates. He PBUH never ate food on table or plates but rather used a leather

dining spread. Although, in meat he liked leg meat (Dasti); in vegetables

he liked long gourd (loki); in curries he liked Sareed (a very likeable food

of Arab); but He (saws) didn’t mind eating vinegar with bread as well. He

(saws) also liked olives, olive oil, dates, honey, watermelon, sangtra,

halwa and kheer.

He (saws) was careful, not only of inner purity, but also paid attention to

physical cleanliness. He PBUH would use a Miswaak on returning home. He PBUH had a habit of taking a bath and used atleast 3 liters of water while

bathing. He PBUH was known because of his lovely fragrance. He PBUH

carried a bottle of Attar (perfume) with him which he used to apply. He PBUH would never reject a gift of milk or perfume and would give a better

gift in return.

He PBUH did not like sleeping before Isha as He PBUH feared missing the

Isha prayer. But after Isha, He PBUH did not spend a lot of time in

unnecessary conversations.

While sleeping, He PBUH used to put his right hand under his right cheek.

According to traditions, He PBUH would put both his hands together (while

reciting the last three Surah of the Holy Quran), blow on his hands and rub

them on his body. He PBUH used to repeat this process three times.

The bed of the Holy Prophet PBUH was made of leather and was filled with

fibrins of dates. His PBUH whole life was an excellent example of simplicity

and contentment. Even at the time of his death, He PBUH did not leave

behind anything except his weapons, a hinny, land that he had given to

59

charity and his children.

60

AAL-E-MUHAMMAD SWA (WIVES AND OFFSPRING)

OF HOLY PROPHET PBUH

The children of Holy Prophet PBUH were all mothered by Hadhrat Khadija rz

except for Hadhrat Ibrahim rz Hadharat Ibrahim rz was born in the last few

years of Holy Propehts’ (saws) life and was mothered by Hadhrat Maria

Qabtia rz

Hadrat Khadija rz mothered 3 sons and 4 daughters of the Holy Prophet

(saws). His sons’ names were Qasim rz Tahir rz and Tayab rz His

daughters’ names were Zainab rz Ruqayya rz Umm-e-Kulsoom rz and

Fatima rz All of his sons died in their childhood but his daughters grew up

and accepted Islam. Apart from Hadhrat Fatima rz none of the other

daughters had any children. The eldest daughter, Hadhrat Zainab rz was

married to Abu-al-Aas Bin Rabi; who was a relative of Hadhrat Khadija rz

From this marriage, Hadhrat Zainab rz gave birth to a son, named Ali; and

a daughter named Umama. Ali died in his childhood and Umama was

married to Hadhrat Ali rz after the death of Hadhrat Fatima rz But Umama

did not have any children from this marriage. Abu-al-Aas did not accept

Islam for many years after hijrah, because of which, Hadhrat Zainab rz had

to face many hardships. Hadhrat Zainab (rz) died while the Holy Prophet PBUH was still alive.

Both Hadhrat Ruqayya rz and Hadhrat Umm-e-Kulsoom rz were engaged

to Abu Lahabs’ sons Atba and Utaiba. Due to the opposition of Islam,

both of these engagements were ended before marriage. After this, both

Hadhrat Ruqayya rz and Hadhrat Umm-e-Kulsoom rz were married to

Hadhrat Usman rz one after the other. Because of these marriages,

Hadhrat Usman rz is called Zulnoorain (possessor of 2 sources of light).

Hadhrat Ruqayya (rz) and Hadhrat Umm-e-Kulsoom rz did not have any

children. Hadhrat Ruqayya rz died in the battle of Badr and Hadhrat

Umm-e-Kulsoom rz passed away after the conquest of Makkah.

61

Hazrat Fatima rz was the Holy Prophet’s PBUH youngest and dearest

daughter. She was married to Hazrat Ali rz after hijrah and Hazrat Imam

Hassan rz and Hazrat Imam Hussain rz were born from this marriage.

Members of their progeny are called Syed. Hazrat Fatima rz passed away

6 months after the demise of the Holy Prophet PBUH

THE EVENT OF MIRAAJ (THE ASCENSION) ISRAAH

(THE NIGHT JOURNEY)

The event of Miraaj (the Ascension) Israah (The night Journey) are two

very important events in Islam- long discussions on which soon began

after the demise of the Holy Prophet, and continue till today. Hence it is

of utmost importance to clarify the wide number of misunderstandings

and interpretations regarding these two events- most of which are existent

in the minds of a large number of Muslims.

The first misconception that has become common is that Isra and Miraj

are the same event, or that they are two parts of the same incident.

However, in reality, Miraj (ascension) is the name of the spiritual journey

on 5th year of his Prophethood- in which the Holy Prophet was brought

up from Mecca to the sky and he appeared in the court of his Lord. Isra

on the other hand is that spiritual journey which was undertaken from

Mecca to the farther Mosque (Bait ul Muqasad)

In the Quran, Hadith and authentic traditions both cases have been

described separately. The Quran states these journeys in separate chapters

with separate conditions and details. Similarly the Hadith also prove these

events were separate and not linked. The most authentic book of Hadith

Sahih Bukhari has made mention of Miraaj and Isra in separate chapters

also. Infact famous Historians have even described Miraj and Isra on

different dates, with differing details. Hence the evidence that are gained

from the Qur'an, the Hadith and history indicates that these two different

trip events actually were undertaken at different times.

Further analysis reveals that although Miraj and Israh may have occurred

62

at close times and perhaps can be linked in their spiritual nature-

63

they are in fact different and separate. Although both trips originated

from Mecca- In Miraj (ascension journey) the Holy Prophet was taken

from Mecca and straight to the heavens, while in Isra from Mecca to the

farther Mosque (Bait ul Muqadus).

The second mistake which commonly exists is that- these are considered

to be Physical journeys as taken by the physical body. However, the

Quran, Hadith and all the historical evidence strongly refute this idea. In

the Holy Quran regarding Miraj we read :

“The heart of the Prophet lied not in seeing what he saw.” (53:12)

That, whatever was seen on this occasion by His heart was right and true-

and that his heart was not mistaken to understand and interpret the vision.

So it is obvious that this was a spiritual journey and not an actual

physical journey.

Similarly, there is also a clear indication from the Hadith that Miraj was a

spiritual journey. The Hadith state that when the vision of the Holy

Prophet’s ascension to heaven took place he was sleeping. However, his

sleep was not like ordinary people- however the great Glory of the Holy

Prophet PBUH was that his eyes slept while his heart was awake in the

remembrance of his Lord. In another tradition it is mentioned that this

ascension was shown between the state of sleep and awakening. In a third

Hadith it is mentioned that the Holy Prophet was awakened after the

vision. In a fourth Hadith- Hazrat Ayesharz is reported to have said that if

a person mentions to you that in the event of Miraj the Holy Prophet saw

God with his own physical eyes- then he is a liar and do not believe him.

Then, from numerous books of the Life of the Holy Prophet PBUH it can be

proven that Miraj was not a physical journey but rather a spiritual

journey. The famous Muslim historian Ibn Ishaq has reiterated the

narration of Hazrat Ayesha- that on the night of Miraj the physical body

of the Holy Prophet did not disappear- rather it remained in this world

61

for the whole time. What more is needed to prove that Miraj was indeed

a spiritual ascension?!

At the same time, when we analyze the details of Isra (Night Journey)

from the Quran and Hadith- then we see that it too was a spiritual

journey. In relation to Isra, 3 things are mentioned in the Holy Quran-

which are:

First, because the journey was at night, as is indicated in the word "Israh".

Secondly, the journey finished in one night and thirdly, the purpose of the

journey was “in order that “We might show him (Holy Prophet) some of

Our Signs”

Considering these three conditions- Israh also proves to be a spiritual

journey and not a physical one. Because firstly for a physical journey- the

norm is to travel at day time, and in those times to travel at night was an

exception. However- on the other hand a spiritual journey or the time for

revelations is at night and for it to occur at daytime is also viewed out of

the ordinary. Hence by God using the words ‘night’ has pointed out that

this was indeed a spiritual journey.

Furthermore, for the journey to have been complete in one night also hint

towards the spiritual element of the journey as in physical terms to travel

from Mecca to the farther Mosque was also seen as in impossibility in one

night. Other than this- in Surah Bani Israel, while describing Israh- the

Arabic term for vision is used- indicating this was a spiritual phenomenon

as normally observed in a dream or vision.

Hence this means that this was a most high status of spiritual vision in

which in accordance with the elevated status of the Holy Prophet PBUH

and due to the great grace of God he was taken on a pure and beautiful

journey in which God showed him both image forms and in metaphorical

terms the great signs and facts which came true in their own due time.

62

MIARAJ THE ASCENSION After clarifying the two major miss interpretations- let us present the

original cases. Miraj is an Arabic word meaning Ascension. According

to authentic traditions on a night in the 5th year of his Prophethood- The

Holy Prophet PBUH was lying in Masjid Al-Haram in Mecca in the Hateem

section (The Hateem is the crescent shaped area immediately adjacent to

the Ka’bah). Here he saw a vision that Hazrat Gabriel appeared, who

picked him up and took him near the Well of Zamzam, ripped open his

chest and purified the Holy Prophet’s heart with the water from Zamzam.

After this a gold plate was brought which was filled with wisdom and

faith. Hazrat Gabriel filled this treasure of wisdom and faith in the Holy

Prophet’s heart and then closed his chest as before. Then Gabriel flew to

the sky with the Holy Prophet where he was met previous prophets like,

Adam, Saleh, Jesus, John, Joseph, Aaron and Moses (peace be upon

them all). Meanwhile, he was also shown the views of people of Fire and

Paradise. Then he was taken to Bait ul Mamoor (i.e the heavenly

sanctuary) where he met Hazrat Ibraheem. During this vision- the Holy

Prophet also saw Gabriel in his true form and he saw that Gabriel has six

hundred wings. After this he was toured around Paradise. And eventually

he appeared in the court of The Majesty and God spoke to him indirectly

and gave glad tidings. During this spiritual journey the obligation of

prayer was also revealed.

After this the Holy Prophet PBUH while crossing the various skies came

down, and he was awakened (i.e the state of vision passed) and the Holy

Prophet PBUH that he was still lying in Masjid Al-Haram.

ISRA THE NIGHT JOURNEY

The Isra The second event is of Isra. This is also has an Arabic word

meaning to go from one place to another during the night or traveling.

And since it was a spiritual journey undertaken in the form of a vision-

it was hence named Isra.

63

The summary of the details contained in the Holy Quran and Hadith is

such that: One night in the 11th year of Prophethood an Angel appeared

to the Holy Prophet PBUH took him towards Bait ul Muqadas whilst

riding on an extremely beautiful long white animal. In Bait ul Muqadas

the Holy Prophet met a group of previous prophets like Abraham, Moses

and Jesus, etc. who those all prayed while the Holy Prophet led the

prayers.

After this Hazrat Gabriel then presented the Holy Prophet PBUH with

three. One contained water, the second milk and the third wine. The

Holy Prophet PBUH chose Milk and declined the wine. Upon this Gabriel

said “You have recognized the nature of this- if you had taken the wine,

your community would have become a wandered nation. If you had

taken water then your community (Ummat?) would have drowned

(destroyed).

During this the Holy Prophet PBUH was also shown an elderly women-

regarding whom Gabriel said that his is the World- and the world will

only remain for as long as this woman has life left in her. After this the

Holy Prophet PBUH returned to Mecca.

This is a brief description of the events of Isra and Miraj. The events and

incidents which took place on these two journeys of the Holy Prophet-

actually possess in them different signals, interpretations and predictions

regarding the future time. Most of the journey of Miraj depicts the

spiritual perfection of the Holy Prohet and Isra depicts the physical and

worldly success of the Holy Prophet. All these details are possessing

amazing beauty inside- and worth further reading. These cannot be

expanded here and thus members are requested to enhance their own

knowledge in this regard. The department of Talim however, shall

endeavor to include further details of this matter in the next part of the

Syllabus Inshallah.
