    in his dream at night and asked, How did All treatyou? He replied, All has forgiven me as wellas all those who participated in my funeralal. The personsaid, Y Sayyid! I also participated in your funeralal.

    Listening to this,a rat Sayyidun Sirr Saq took outa list and checked for his name therein but that persons namewas not present in the list; when checked thoroughly, he sawthat the name of that person was written in the margin.(Shar -us- udr, P279, Dr-ul-Kitb Al-Arab, Beirut)

    The Forgiveness of the Devotees as wellAfter the death of a rat Sayyidun Bishrf , Qsimbin Munabbi saw him in dream and asked, How didAll treat you? He replied, All forgave me andtold me O Bishr! I have forgiven you as well as all those whattended your funeralal. I then requested, O Rab ,forgive even those who love me. All said, I have forgivenall those who would love you till the Day of Judgment.(Shar -us- udr, P275, Dr-ul-Kitb Al-Arab, Beirut)

    Thief of ShroudA shroud-stealer participated in funeralal of a woman andnoted the whereabouts of her grave in the graveyard. At night,he dug the grave with the intention of stealing the shroud. Allof a sudden, the blessed woman spoke, ! A Maghfr(Pardoned) person is stealing the shroud of a Maghfra woman!Listen, All has forgiven me and all those who offeredmy funeral al and you are also among the pardoned ones.Listening to this, he immediately closed the grave and repentedsincerely.(Shar -us- udr, P201)

    Forgiveness of Funeral ParticipantsDear Islamic brothers! Did you notice how beneficial participationin the funeral al of the pious people is! Whenever we get achance or even better, making effort to get such a chance, weshould participate in funeralal of the Muslims. Ourparticipation in funeral of a pious person may bring about ourforgiveness in the Hereafter. How immense Alls mercy is!He forgives not only the deceased but also the attendees of hisfuneral! Therefore, a rat Sayyidun Abdull bin Abbs

    reports that the Holy Prophet said,The very first reward given to the true believer on his death isthat all the participants of his funeralal are forgiven.(Shuub-ul-Imn, V7, P7, ad No. 258)

    First Gift in the Grave

    A blessed ad of the Exalted Prophet says,When a true believer enters his grave, the very first gift givento him is that all the participants of his funeralal are forgiven.(Kanz-ul-Umml, V15, P595)

    The Funeral of a Heavenly PersonThe Holy Prophet said, When a Heavenly person passes away, All has shyness from punishingthose who carried the bier of that person and those whofollowed the funeral procession and those who offered hisfuneral al.(Al-Firdaus bim r-ul-Khi b, V1, P282)

    awb of accompanying the funerala rat Sayyidun Dwd humbly asked All ,

    Y All ! What is the awb of accompanying the funeralmerely for Your pleasure? All replied, The day whenhe dies, the angels will accompany his funeral procession and Iwill forgive him.(Shar -us- udr, P101)

    awb Equivalent to Mount Uuda rat Sayyidun Aburara reports that the Prophet

    of Rama, the Intercessor of Umma said,The one who departed from home to accompany a funeral(considering it as a duty of believers and with the intention to earnawb), offered funeralal and accompanied the funeral tillburial, awb of two Qris written for him. Each Qrisequivalent to mount Uud. There is one Qrawb for the

    person who returns after funeralal (without participationin the burial).( a Muslim, V1, P307)

    The Funeralal has Admonitiona rat Sayyidun Abar Ghifr narrated that the

    beloved and blessed Prophet said to me, Visitthe graves, it will remind you of the Hereafter and bathe thedeceased as touching the mortal body (dead body) is a greatlesson and offer the funeralal so that it makes you gloomy,for a gloomy person is under the shadow of All anddoes pious deeds.(Al-Mustadrak-lil- kim, V1, P11, ad 71435)

    Excellence of giving ritual bath etc. to the Corpsea rat Sayyidun Ali reported that The Holy Prophet

    said, The one who gives bath to a deceasedperson, shrouds him, applies fragrance, lifts the bier, offersal and hides the unpleasant thing that appears, he will be as

    cleansed of his sins as he was on the day when born from hismothers womb.(Sunan-e-ibn-e-Mja, V2, P201, ad No. 1462)

    What to Recite on Seeing a Funeral!After the death of a rat Sayyidun Malik bin Anas , someone saw him in a dream and asked, How did All treat you? He replied, I was blessed with forgiveness jusbecause of a sentence whicha rat Sayyidun Umn-e-Ghan

    used to say on seeing a funeral: [Pure is He (from all defects / limitations) who is alive and will never die ]. Hence, I also used to recite the same sentence on seeingfuneral; All forgave me because of reciting it.(Derived from I y-ul-Ulm, V5, P266)

    The Funeralal is Far -e-Kifya The funeral al is Far-e-Kifya, i.e. if even a single personoffered it, everyone would be relieved of the obligation; if noone offered, all those who were aware of it will be sinners

    (Fatw-e-Ttr Khniyya, V2, P153)Jamat is not a condition forthis al; if even one person offered it, the Farz will be fulfilled(Fatw-e-Alamgr, V1, P162)The denial of its Fariyyat (obligation)is Kufr (infidelity).(Fatw-e-Ttr Khniyya, Vol-2, P154)

    There are two Units and three Sunna in theFuneral PrayerThe two Units are:

    Method of Funeralal ( anaf)Muqtad should make the following intention: I make theintention of offering funeralal for All and makingsupplication for this dead person, following this Imm.(Fatw-e-Ttr Khniyya, V2, P153)Now Imm and the Muqtads should raise their hands up to their ears and fold them below

    the navel as usual whilst saying , and then recite an.After read . Then, withoutraising the hands, say and recite Durd-e-Ibrahim.

    Without raising the hands again, say and now recitethe supplication (the Imm should say the Takb rt loudly whilst the Muqtads should say in low volume. Both Imm andMuqtads should recite remaining invocations in low volume).

    After the supplication, say , unfold the hands and perform

    Salm on both sides.( shiya-tu - a w, P584)

    Supplication for Funeral of Adults (Man and

    Woman)

    O All ! Forgive all of our living ones and all the dead onesand all those who are present and all those who are not present

    and all our young ones and all our old ones, and all our men and

    our women. Y All ! Whomever you keep alive from among us, keep him live in Islam, and whomever of us you make die, m

    him die with faith.

    Du for a Male Minor

    O All ! Make him fore-runner to become support for us,and make him recompense for us, and make him our intercesso

    and the one whose intercession is accepted.

    Du for a Female Minor

    O All ! Make her fore-runner to become support for us, andmake her recompense for us, and make her our intercessor, and t

    one whose intercession is accepted.

    To Offer Funeralal whilst Standing uponShoesIn case of offering the funeralal wearing the shoes, the

    shoes as well as the part of the earth beneath them must bepure, while, in case of offering theal placing the feet uponthe shoes having taken them off, the purity of the sole of theshoes and the ground is not necessary. In reply to a question,Al a rat says, If the place was impure due to urineetc. or those who offered theal wearing such shoes whose

    soles were not pure, theiral would not be valid. It is,therefore, safer to offer theal keeping the feet upon shoeshaving taken them off so that theal would not be affectedeven if the sole of the shoes or the earth beneath is impure.(Fatw-e-Razavyya, V9, P188)

    Funeral al in Absentia

    Presence of corpse in front is necessary. Funeralal in absenceof corpse can not be valid.(Durr-e-Mukhtr, Rad-dul-Mu tr, V3, P123) It is Mustaab for the Imm to stand in front of the chest of the corpse.(Marqil fal ma shiya-tu - a w, P583)

    Method of Offering Jointal for More than oneFuneralal of several funerals may be offered jointly. It is optional to

    either place the corpses parallel such that chest of all remain infront of the Imm or place them in a queue such that the feet

    of the one corpse are towards head of the other and so on.(Bar-e-Sharat, Part 4, P157)

    How many Rows should there be in Funeralal?It is better to have threeafs (rows) in the funeralal as it ismentioned in ad, The one whose (funeral)al was offeredby three afs, he will be forgiven.(Jmi-e-Tirmi, Vol-1, P22)If thereare only 7 people, one should become Imm, three should standin the first af, two in the secondaf and one in the thirdaf.(Ghunya-tul-Mustaml, P541)In the funeral al, the last af isgreater than all otherafs, i.e. the awb of offering funeralal in the last af is greater than offering in any otheraf.

    (Durr-e-Mukhtr, Rad-dul-Mu tr, V3, P131)

    If One Missed Some part of CongregationalFuneral al, thenThe Masbq (the person who has missed some of the Takbrt)will say his remaining Takbrt after the Imm has performedSalm on either side. If he suspects that the people would carrythe bier up to the shoulders in case of reciting supplicationsetc., he should just utter Takbrt and leave out the supplications

    etc.(Ghunya-tul-Mustaml, P537)If a person comes after the fourthTakbr, he may join theal (before the Imm performs Salm),utter Takbr three times after Imms Salm(Durr-e-Mukhtr, Rad-dul-Mu tr, Vol-3, P136)and then perform Salm.

    Funeral of an Insane or the one who CommittedSuicideThe one who is insane by birth or became insane before reaching

    the age of puberty and died in the state of insanity, the supplicationof Minor will be recited in his funeralal.(Derived from shiya-tu - a w, P587)The funeral al of the one who committedsuicide will be offered.(Durr-e-Mukhtr, Vol-3, P108)

    Rulings Pertaining to a Dead InfantIf a Muslims baby was born alive i.e. he was alive whilst most paof his body was out (during birth) and then died, he will be bathed,shrouded and his funeralal will be offered. Otherwise, he willbe washed (ritual bath not required), wrapped in a cloth and buried.Ritual bathing, coffin and funeralal are not required for himaccording to Sunna. If the babys head comes out first, Most partmeans from head up to the chest in this case. Therefore, if thebabys head came out and he cried but died before coming out upto the chest, his funeralal will not be offered. If feet come outfirst Most part, means from feet up to the waist in this caseWhether the baby is born alive or dead or lost in miscarriage (pre-mature birth), he should be named as he will be resurrected on theDay of Judgement.(Durr-e-Mukhtr, Rad-dul-Mu tr, Vol-3, P152)

    awb of Carrying the Bier on ShouldersIt is stated in ad, Whoever carries the bier on shoulder andwalks 40 steps, 40 of his major sins will be forgiven.(Al- abarn- fil-Awsa , V4, P260, ad No. 5920)It is also mentioned in ad

    that the one who carries the bier on shoulder from all four posts (offuneral bier) will be granted Ultimate Forgiveness by All .(Al Jauarat-un-Nayyra, V1, P139)

    Method of Shouldering the BierIt is an act of worship to carry the bier on shoulder.(Ttr Khniya,V2, P150)It is Sunna to carry the bier on shoulder from all fourcorners one after the other and walk 10 steps at each side. Thecomplete Sunna is to first carry the bier on shoulder from theright head side of the bier, then the right foot side, then the lefthead side and then the left foot side and to walk 10 steps eachtime thus making a total of 40 steps.(Marqil fal ma shiya-tu -

    a w, P604)Some people announce in the funeral procession towalk two steps each. They should instead announce, Carry thefuneral on shoulder from all four sides and walk 10 steps each time

    Method of Carrying the Bier of a ChildIf a single person carries the body of a young child in his armsand the rest of the people take the child in their arms in turn,there is no harm in it.(Al-Ba r-ur-R-aiq, V2, P335)It is impermissibleand forbidden for a woman to walk along in the funeral procession(whether it is the funeral of young or old).(Durr-e-Mukhtr, Rad-dul-Mu tr, Vol-3, P162)

    Rulings of Returning after the Funeralal Whoever accompanied the funeral should not return home withoutoffering the funeralal; after theal, he may return seekingpermission from the family-members of the deceased person.

    There is no need to ask permission for returning after the burial.(Alamgr, Vol-1, P165)

    Can a Husband Carry the Bier of his Wife?The husband is allowed to carry his wifes bier on his shoulder,lower her in the grave for the burial and see her face. He isprohibited only from bathing his wife and directly touching herbody (without cloth etc. in between).(Durr-e-Mukhtr, Rad-dul-Mu tr,Vol-3, P105)A woman can bathe her husband.(Durr-e-Mukhtr, Rad-dul-Mu tr, Vol-3, P107)

    Funeral of a Disbeliever To participate in the funeralal or funeral procession of aMurtad (apostate) or disbeliever considering it as a permissibleand worthy of awb act is Kufr. Al-a rat Imm AmadRaz Khn says that if someone attends a Murtads ordisbelievers funeralal believing it as worthy of participation,he will himself become a Kfir. However, if this is not his beliethen participation is strictly arm. It is mentioned inadthat if the funeral of a disbeliever is coming, a Muslim shouldwalk away from it because Satan walks in front of such funerahappily with a flame of fire in his hand celebrating that hisendeavours became fruitful on that person.(Malf t, Part 4, P359)

    Nik (Marriage) became null and Void!To attend the funeralal of a disbeliever or apostate becauseof worldly interests isarm-e-Qa and severely arm. The

    one who attends the funeral of a disbeliever regarding it is anact of awb and considering that the deceased disbeliever deservefuneral al and supplication for forgiveness, he himself willno longer remain a Muslim and his Nik(marriage) will become

    invalid. He should renew his Islam and Nik. (Derived from Fatw-e-Razavyya, V9, P173) All says in 84th verse of Sra-tut-Tauba of the Holy Quran:

    Translation from Kanz-ul-Imn And never offeral for any of their dead, and never stand by hisgrave. No doubt, they denied All and His Messenger, and

    died while they were in transgression (infidelity). ( Sra T auba, ya 84)

    Commenting on the foregoing ya,a rat-e-Allma SayyidNam-ud-dn Murdbd says, This ya has madeit clear that the funeralal of a disbeliever is not permissible atall and it is forbidden to stand besides the grave of a disbelieverfor burial or visit.(Khaz-ain-ul-Irfn, P321)

    Do not Visit a Sick who is a DisbelieverIt is reported by a rat Sayyidun Jbir bin Abdull that the Sultan of Madna said, If they fall ill,dont go to see them, if they die, dont participate in their funeral(Sunan ibn-e-Mja, ad 92, V1, P70)

    Make the Following Announcement before theFuneral of an Adult

    he friends and relatives of the deceased are requested to

    pay attention. If the deceased had ever hurt you or violatedyour right in his lifetime, please forgive him, thiswill benefit the deceased and you will also be rewarded. If thereis any issue of borrowing or lending, contact the deceasedsinheritors. Please listen carefully about the intention and themethod of the funeralal. I make the intention to offer

    funeral al for All , and supplication for thisdead person, following this Imm.If you do not rememberthese particular words, there is no harm as long as this intentionis in the heart: I am offering funeralal for this deceased person.When the Imm says raise both your hands up to the ears,say then fold them below the navel and recite an. Whenthe Imm says second time, without raising your hands, say

    and recite Durd-e-Ibrm. When the Imm says for the third time, without raising your hands, say andrecite the funeral supplication of deceased adult (or if it is thefuneral of a male or female child then announce to recite thesupplication for the deceased child). When the Imm says

    the forth and (final) time, say and unfold handsand perform Salm following Imm as usual on both sides.
