My responsibilities include memberships and post activities. I need your help, first we need to have all members pay their dues AS SOON AS POSSIBLE, the goal is to be in the running for a $5000 raffle from the department and is only eligible for those who are 100% + 2. If you are having difficul-ty please let me know so we may work out assistance for you. As last word from the Adjutant we are at 45% paid dues including our PUFL’s. We need at least 75% by the end of October. I know we can do it.

August 16, we had the Department of Florida Commander and his representatives at the Post. This is the first time in many years we were able to welcome the Department Commander into our Post that it wasn’t election time. After leaving our post they were heading over to Full Sail to meet with the representatives over there.

Now for our Programs— check the calendar for the Burgers and More as well as our Post Breakfast during the next two months. September 21 we are having an open house and inviting all the neigh-borhood members to join us for a meet and greet. This event is to show off and explain what the AMERICAN LEGION and especially POST 112 has and can do for them. It is our intent to have as-sistance from the Sons of the American Legion, the Navy Fleet Reserve, Auxiliary 112 and of course our Centurion Naval Sea Cadet Battalion, the number ONE unit in the nation.

Finally I wish to thank the Centurion Battalion of USNCC who surprised me with a cake and ice cream during their Sunday drill, for my birthday. THANK YOU CADETS AND STAFF, you make me proud.

We are in the middle of the hurricane season and I am sure there are those members that may need assistance in preparing for the possibility of a hurricane coming our way. This is not only for a hurricane, but in any way that we can help. We are aware that many of our members are not able to get out, if this is the case please feel free to contact the Post if you need any assistance in any way. membership. We should be able to get into the running for this. Have you paid your dues and still received one more notice? Those notices are set up to be mailed at specific dates. If you paid your dues, the notice of payment has to go to the Depart-ment and then on to National where they try to pull the notices out of the mailing – sometimes it doesn’t get there in time and a second notice is sent. You could say that this is where the electronic medium hasn’t quite been able to keep up with the manual world where someone actually has to pull the envelope. And, if it hap-pens to you, we apologize.

We have started up a NEW conference bridge! The previous ones did not provide adequate au-dio quality to make them worthwhile to the listen-ers. The new bridge is NOT a local number. It is accessible by CELL phone or by a phone that can make free long distance calls OR BY COM-PUTER. If you join in by computer, you will be able to see the meeting as well as hear it. We are one of the few Posts in the country that make the meetings accessible on line. Membership is climbing but we have a ways to go. Remember, the goal is to get into the running for the $5000 award for one of the Posts that is able to make their one member over the highest

too.

In early October we’ll be deliver-ing our Reading Rockets kits to both Cheney and Eastbrook Ele-mentary Schools. This will be our third year supporting the reading program at Eastbrook and our second year with Cheney’s read-ing program.

And of course, our year-round school supply and non-perishable food drives to support the pantries at our two elemen-tary schools continues. We are very grateful for all the donations that have been received to date from our Post family members. We were also thrilled to receive 27 backpacks and bottled water from Costco to support our ef-forts. The Goldenrod Chamber of Commerce members have also made donations to our project.

Our next meeting is September 10th. Come join the fun!

We are excited about working on the new Auxiliary theme, Cruis-ing for Unity, that was introduced by 2014 Department President Gerrie Bailey at the June con-vention. The 6th District is the Spirit deck on the USS Auxiliary so we’ll be showing our spirit this year as we cruise for unity!

August was busy for your Unit. In addition to welcoming Hannah and Robyn, our Girls State dele-gates, to the August meeting so they could share the stories of their adventures with the Post, our members attended the 6th District School of Instruction on the 17th to learn about all the Auxiliary programs for 2014 and followed up on the 18th with our annual Planning Conference that allowed us to review the Plans of Action for each program, confirm our program chairs and plan for the activities and projects that we will perform during the year to support the programs identified by the national organization.

And boy do we have a busy year planned! In addition to our on-going collections of grocery cou-pons, soda can pull-tabs, Camp-bell’s soup can labels, and Box Tops for Education labels, we’ll be supporting the Post’s activi-ties like the Easter Egg Hunt, Christmas in July, all the Post Arts & Crafts and Yard Sales and the annual Halloween party.

The fall 6th District meeting is scheduled for 9/7 at Post 19 and will feature a collection of socks

for the District’s Support the Homeless project and the Orlan-do Stand Down. Since there is no Post, SAL or Unit meetings scheduled before 9/7, please bring your donations to the Post on your next visit.

Our members will also be attend-ing the 6th District ABC School on 9/14 at Post 63 in Winter Gar-den. All interested Post and SAL members are encouraged to join your Auxiliary sisters to learn more about the Auxiliary.

We are looking forward to partici-pating in the Post 112 Family Open House on 9/21 as a way to increase our membership. We finished 2013 with 21 members and we already have ten paid members for 2014. We also want to welcome two new members, Sharon Leimer and Nancy Wa-terworth. Sharon’s husband transferred to our Post earlier in the summer and Sharon joined the Unit as a new member. Nan-cy is a transfer from Maryland who was referred to us by Post 242 in Oviedo. We would love to have more of our Post spouses join our Unit and have fun with us. For our current members, if you have not yet paid your dues for 2014, please remember that they are due NOW. Please bring your dues to the September meeting so you can get your card.

Some of our members will be supporting the Orlando Stand Down at the end of September,

The cadets are being challenged to com-plete their studies for promotions and preparing for the FTX (field training exercise) with Navy Seals and other branch special ops. We will also be assisting at the annual Navy Seal Mus-ter in Ft. Pierce in November.

We wish to thank American Legion, Winter Park Memorial Post 112, for the past ten years sup-port and we hope the next ten will be even greater. As a service organization to the youth you have gone above and beyond to assist us in obtaining that number ONE rating.

The number ONE Na-val Sea Cadet Battalion is once again beginning a new adventure. We are going to attempt the impossible and that is being NUMBER ONE for two years in a row, especially since it has never been done.

The Cadets have completed their first weekend drill with new members starting and older mem-bers taking the leadership to a newer level. There have been many who have had summer trainings including SWCC Special Boat Train-ings, Aviation Trainings as well as Recruit train-ing to mention a few. This first drill introduced

UCF Community Veterans History Project As you can see below, UCF is collecting your military service history. This is whether you served over seas or at home as a support unit. It is important to let our voice be recorded. Tell your story for the next generation.

The UCF Community Veterans History Project is collecting, preserving, and making accessible to the public the experiences of Central Florida's veterans so that future generations will better under-stand the realities of conflict. It is a collaborative endeavor supported by multiple departments and offices at UCF, such as the Honors College and Veterans Academic Resource Center. The histories, which students began recording during the fall 2010 semester, are archived and made digitally avail-able through the UCF library. The UCF Community Veterans History Project will also contribute se-lected veterans' histories to the Veterans History Project at the Library of Congress.

“emergency conditions” and contact as many other ama-teurs who are doing the same thing. At the same time, here is a chance to promote both as-pects of amateur radio AND THE POST.

Another opportunity is the an-nual “Jamboree on the Air!” This event is in October and the object is to give Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts and other youth a chance to experience amateur radio. Again, setting up a tem-porary station isn’t that hard, and the Post can open itself up to the YOUTH in your area. Of course, both of these activities are optional, but they are occa-sions where your POST can SHINE in the eyes of your neighbors.

When you were on active duty, do you remember the “MARS” stations or the “Phone Patch” stations? For many years, they

were the primary means of cost effective phone calls home. Of course, in the day and age of inexpensive cellular phone calls, these stations have be-come harder to find.

The American Legion has formed the American Legion Amateur Radio Club! The club is headquartered at National and they actually hold “on the air” networks on the second Saturday of the month. And, in keeping with the times, they are also on the internet. Here is the link to the network schedule, if you have a radio, you may want to listen in. Go to: http://www.legion.org/hamradio/monthly-net-schedule.

The TALARC (The American Legion Amateur Radio Club) is open to all Legionnaires who are amateur radio operators (HAMS). The main WEB page for the Club is: http://www.legion.org/hamradio.

There is an amateur shirt and a hat pin available from the Em-blem Sales at reasonable pric-es.

If you are an amateur, here is a way to add the Legion Recogni-tion to your skills and also pro-mote Amateur Radio in your local area. And, while we are talking about Amateur Radio, don’t forget that there are some very spe-cial events each year where Amateur Radio AND YOUR POST can shine! Field Day is an annual exercise that hap-pens on the fourth weekend of June, each year. Your Post COULD invite a local radio club to set up their station(s) at the Post during this weekend. The purpose of the exercise is to get amateurs to set up under

Moore High School could not attend due to prior commit-

ments but his mother emailed me that he too enjoyed his ex-perience and thanked the post for the support which allowed him to attend. All the boys re-ceived Certificates of Apprecia-tion for citizenship.

All our delegates were encour-aged to enter the upcoming Or-atorical contest.

At the 8/13/2013 meeting Han-nah and Robyn shared their

experiences at Girls State, ex-claiming that the week they spent in Tallahassee was both re-warding and unforgettable

in the ways it helped them grow in their citi-zenship as young women. Hannah was the Unit 112 delegate and Robyn was the Alternate who was selected to represent another Unit that could not identify a delegate. Both girls were most appreciative for their opportunity and thanked every-one for their support in raising the funds needed to send them.

We had two of the three boys that represented the post at Boy State give a "debriefing" about their experienc-

es. James Doyle and Duc-Quy-Nguyen both gave their accounts of what was an exciting and worth while experience. Patrick McMahan from Bishop

Fall Conference Information This year’s conference will be held at the Hilton Walt Disney World, November 15-17. If you want to stay overnight, the hotel has room set aside BUT make your reservations quickly since the rooms go quickly.

Why should I go? The FALL Conference is an ideal time to learn more about the Legion, the Auxilia-ry and the SAL in general and how the various programs that are done by the Posts, Units and Squadrons throughout the year. Many of the programs actually have classes. There are also work-shops for many positions in the Post, Unit and Squadron like as how to do the Historian’s job, how to handle Membership and Recruiting and many, many others.

It is two days (Friday and Saturday) just chocked full of information for the members who want to learn more about what the Legion family does and I am sure that you will find something there of in-terest.

As a rule, the Department has been able to arrange for parking at no cost, and there is no cost to attend the conference.

Check the WEB sites (both the Post’s and the Department’s) for more information including an agen-da and list of courses being offered!

There are those who SCAM the system but there are also those real situations that we need to have the ability to assist.

The run for the Presidential nominations has already begun and it is up to you to voice your

We all belong to this Post’s family and our members’ support is vital to us achieving our goals. This will also be a good time to meet our officers see what we are trying to accomplish this year.

The SAL has new officers for this year and we are going to strive to increase our member-ship. Our officers are: Jimmy Thornton, Commander Jerry Dress, Vice Commander Bob Colbert, Adjutant Bob Colbert, Finance Officer Billy Dover, Sgt at Arms Jim McClure, Chaplain

On Saturday August 24, we held our first event, a SAL cook-out with hamburgers, hot dogs, baked beans and more.

We have another event in Sep-tember that hopefully will gen-erate a positive interest in the Squadron. On Saturday Sep-tember 21, there will be a meet and greet at the Post. Come and see WHO we are, WHAT we do, HOW we do it. There will be free hot dogs and drinks.

We are looking forward to see-ing as many of the Post 112 family members as possible. This is a great opportunity for

SAL Adjutant’s Update—Bob Colbert The Sons of the American Legion Squadron 112 met on the 19th of August. We confirmed our lead-ership and have begun work on the Constitution and By Laws, as well as coordinated the plans for the S A L Cookout on 8/24 and the support for the Post’s Meet and Greet on Sept 21st. This is a “Legion Family” event and all three programs will have representation. This is just the beginning so why not stop by on the 21st of September to see what we are up to.

VA Clinic Needs Your Help! The VA Clinic is in need of drivers for the vehicles and golf carts as well as helping to get the vets into and out of their appointments at the clinic. This is an ongoing need and you don’t have to com-mit to any specific number of hours. They will be happy with whatever time you can be there, from once a month (or less) up to every day. The clinic uses volunteers Monday through Saturday – 8 am to 5 pm. At the moment, the clinic really needs the Golf Cart drivers to bring the vets from the parking lot into the clinic itself. Believe it or not, IT IS HOT!!! The trip across the parking lot may not seem like much for most of us, but to some of our less physically able vets, it is a long, hot walk. To volunteer, just go to the clinic next to the old Navy Base (Baldwin Park, now), and check in. AND, if you will let the Post know how many hours you have given each month, the Post gets credit on our annual report. Thanks for supporting our Veterans!
