truly honored not only those who have given the ulti-mate but those of us who served. I recommend next year that everyone attend this service - you will never regret it.

As I completed this years report to send to the Depart-ment and National HQ, there were a lot of questions that could have been filled out but weren’t. Unfortu-nately there was no documentation to calculate the complete answers. I am proposing that we fill out ac-tivity sheets which would allow me to make a monthly flow sheet and therefore allow us to show our Post in the best light. For those who show up at the meetings only you are missing out on the fellowship with our members. This post is made up of individuals, not just the Executive Board. We need your support and your participation at our events.

Please look at the schedule of events, 2nd Vice Dress is very busy and with the assistance of 1st Vice elect Thornton they are in the process of working on the July Arts and Craft show, Christmas in July event along with our Breakfast and Burgers and More events.

At the end of this month the Department Convention is being held at the Caribe Royale Resort near Disney. Your post is being represented however I highly rec-ommend that you attend. There are meetings to assist the Post in the operation and event functions. It would give each of you a greater insight of the organization and how things work for YOUR benefit.

As I sat down to write this report for the past two months activities I would first like to welcome our new members. Many were transferred in from Post 400 and hopefully will become active in our post.

Just to recap some of the events I attended along with other member of the post: In May I attended Past Com-mander Robert’s service, and then the Post Memorial Service for Tom on the 13th. I wish to give a Well Done to 2nd Vice Dress and Past Commander Costello for their organization and leading the presentation in memory of Tom. To continue I wish to thank all those who gave out school metals during this past three months. I was given the privilege to present two metals to the Lake Howell Cadets.

The Post did a great job of remembering our fallen com-rades during the Memorial Day service on May 29th. There was a great turnout and the Taps was played by a Lake Howell High School band member along with the 21 gun salute by the Pine Castle Post Honor Guard was very fitting. Not to forget the posting of the colors by our own Sea Cadets.

The Sea Cadets had a presentation of their end of the year awards and the changing of Command during the ceremony. 2nd Vice Dress who has always called them his children was presented a photo album by the Sea Cadets.

On Memorial Day four Post members were present for a great presentation and honoring our fallen comrades at Glen Haven Memorial Park. This hour long presentation

Adjutant’s Report—Bill Dover

The Objectives of the National Americanism Commission as stated by The American Legion Institute are, in part:

A strong Americanism program should emphasize the signifi-cance of American Traditions and should instill a sense of per-sonal obligation to accept an ac-tive part in the duties and respon-sibilities of American citizenship. It should provide opportunity and encouragement for each individ-ual to develop to his/her fullest capacity the intellectual, moral, physical and economic qualifica-

Americanism—By Tim Healey

tions necessary for happy, useful living in a free country.

We should promote an under-standing of the principles of de-mocratic government, develop interest in governmental prob-lems and bring more citizens to think seriously of the duties of citizenship. We should encour-age education and inform Ameri-can citizens about the history of the U.S. Flag, promote respect for it and ensure proper flag eti-quette is observed. We should combat subversion and all un-American groups and activities that work toward the downfall of

democracy in America. We should assist legal aliens in adapting to the American way of life through education programs, and to re-strict immigration to ensure this assimilation may be made smoothly.

The National Americanism Com-mission defines Americanism as Love of America; loyalty to her institutions as the BEST yet de-signed by man to secure life, lib-erty, individual dignity and happi-ness; and the willingness to de-fend our Flag against all enemies, foreign and domestic.

year’s convention. Our awesome President sub-mitted our Unit history book for 2010-2011 and was awarded a plaque for the Unit for the best history book in the 6th District! The highlight of

the convention was the installation of the new De-partment offi-cers, including Diane Rous-seau, Depart-ment Presi-dent and the

instal lat ion of Diane Anderson as the 6th Dis-trict Presi-dent for her second year.

During the Florida American Legion press Association meeting, our news-

letter editor was presented with a trophy because our Post newsletter was judged to be the best newsletter in the Department for Posts with fewer than 250

members—congratulations Nell!

Unit 112 also recently launched it’s own website. Check us out at: www.AmLegionAux112FL.com

After our installation in July, our fun group of ladies will be working on our annual school supply and food drives. We are always looking for other ladies who are interested in participating in our fun filled projects. If you would like more information, please contact us at 321.578.8612 or email us at: [email protected] as we Leap to Success for 2011-2012!

What a FANTASTIC couple of months we’ve had!

In the last newsletter, we wrote about our project to collect personal items

for soldiers in Af-ghanistan and the tremendous response we received from many other Auxiliary Units across Florida. Our Unit was recog-nized at the 6th Dis-trict Constitutional Conference in May for bringing this op-

portunity to the attention of the district and we received our first trophy for developing the best National Security project in the District for this

year. And to top things off, when MST R o d r i g u e z was home on leave in mid-June, our Unit hosted a

reception for him and his family so that he could meet the members of the Legion family who participated in this project. We had Auxiliary, Legion and Rid-ers lead-e r s h i p present from our D is t r i c t as well as the Depart-ment of Florida as 6th District Presi-dent Diane Anderson and Department President, Irma Wehrli, attended.

And what would May be without Me-morial Day and our Poppy drive. This

year, we added our very first Poppy Poster Contest. We asked the students at Eastbrook Elementary School to make post-ers depicting the story of the Poppy and its

meaning. We d o n a t e d some Poppy’s to the school for the project

and just before Memorial Day, we received about 65 post-ers for the con-test. We pre-sented the win-ning students

with certifi-cates and ribbons and each child who entered received an H o n o r a b l e mention ribbon for their efforts.

And, of course, May also brought our Unit elections. Congratulations to our 2011-2012 officers: President, Aunita Padgett Vice President, Marge Berrios Secretary-Treasurer, Nell Colbert Sgt at Arms, Johanna Langis Chaplain, Debi Shannon Historian, Aunita Padgett Please be sure to mark your calendar for July 12th and attend our meeting to see our new officers be installed.

June saw Aunita, Nell and Marge at-tend the Department of Florida annual convention at the Caribe Royale Re-sort. We attended classes for our po-sitions, made lots of new friends and renewed acquaintances from last

Veterans Housing Update amount. Foreclosure cases involving military personnel serving overseas began coming to light in 2005. Last month, New York-based JPMorgan Chase agreed to settle a class-action lawsuit for more than $60 million. The case involved a Marine Corps captain who said JPMorgan overcharged its mili-tary customers who took out mort-gages with the bank. Earlier this year, JPMorgan acknowledged that it had overcharged about 4,000 service members on mortgages and had wrongfully foreclosed on 14 of them. At the time, it paid $2 million to those affected and reversed the foreclo-sures. Federal officials say they're working to provide greater financial protections for military families. A fed-eral office dedicated to military finan-cial issues, the Office of Service member Affairs, was launched in January and is to be incorporated within the newly created Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. [Source: Military.com Derek Kravitz and Pete Yost Associated Press article 26 May 2011 ++]

Two mortgage lenders will pay more than $22 million combined to settle federal civil charges that they improp-erly foreclosed on 178 military per-sonnel, some of whom were serving in the Iraq or Afghanistan wars. Sub-sidiaries of Bank of America Corp. and Morgan Stanley failed to obtain court orders before imposing the fore-closures between 2006 and 2009, the Justice Department said Thursday. The cases will result in an average of $125,562 in payments per person. The foreclosed homes were in 22 states. The settlement is "easily the largest amount recovered" in a case of improper military foreclosures, said Thomas E. Perez, an assistant attor-ney general. "The men and women who serve our nation in the armed forces deserve, at the very least, to know that they will not have their homes taken from them wrongfully while they are bravely putting their lives on the line on behalf of their country," Perez said. Among those foreclosed upon were several service members who had been wounded or who suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder, officials said. One involved an Iraq war veteran who was

foreclosed upon while he was receiv-ing counseling for nightmares and "nervous conditions" stemming from his service. Under the settlement, Perez said, the lenders agreed to create additional mortgage loan protections for military personnel. The Bank of America sub-sidiary, BAC Home Loans Servicing, formerly known as Countrywide Home Loans Servicing, and the Morgan Stanley subsidiary, Saxon Mortgage Services, also agreed to look into possible cases of improper foreclo-sures from the summer of 2009 through 2010. The law the lenders were accused of violating, the Service members' Civil Relief Act, provides protections to military personnel. Un-der the law, they can't be evicted and creditors can't seize their property while they're on active duty. The Jus-tice Department began its investiga-tion earlier this year after separate inquiries from the U.S. Marine Corps and Sgt. James Hurley, whose home in Hartford, Mich., was foreclosed upon by Saxon in 2005 while he was in Iraq. Hurley settled with Saxon ear-lier this year for an undisclosed

My new term of office has begun with a flurry of activity. A visit to Jim Brady to check on him revealed that he is recovering at home after a leg injury. I had visited Tom and Marian Rob-erts several times prior to his de-mise. He was in good spirits up until he was removed from his res-pirator, then, everything went downhill for him. I am saddened to

have to report his death. Our Post honored him with a beautiful Me-morial Service which was high-lighted by an Honor Guard Squad and a Twenty One Gun Salute. The Memorial Service was at-tended by about thirty people. On June 8, I represented Post 112 Awarding Scholastic Achievement Certificates and Medals at Chicka-saw Middle School. This was a rewarding experience both to me
