As we get closer to the end of this school year, we begin to focus on what will take place during the upcoming year. One of the big tasks in front of us is creating class lists for next year. This task is taken seriously and continues throughout the summer. The following is written in our Elementary Parent/Student handbook regarding parent input for the next year:
Careful attention is given to the process of determining class sections. Johnston has attempted in the past to provide reasonable class sizes. However, other considerations are given to this process. The number one priority is to create class sections, which will best fit the needs of the individual students involved. Many factors are considered in balancing classroom assignments. For example, classes may be balanced in terms of the number of students, boys/girls, personality, students with special needs, and ability. Occasionally the separation of students is a part of the process. Relatives, close friends and personality clashes are factors considered when separating students from one another. The intent is to create a classroom setting that is beneficial to the students and does not inhibit teaching staff from doing the best possible job. The public must be aware that the placement of students is a task that is not taken lightly. There is considerable time and effort put into the process.
With this in mind, the school does not accept requests for specific teachers; however, parents may provide the school with input regarding their child’s learning needs. You should put your thoughts in writing and address it to the attention of the building principal before April 2nd. The principal has the authority to make the final decision regarding the membership of any given class. We anticipate releasing our class lists in early August. This is necessary to accommodate any growth over the summer.
Class Assignments for 2011-2012
The Iowa Tests of Basic skills test has been renamed to the Iowa Assessments. The overall look of the test has changed. This year, students will not be taking the full battery of tests but the ones that are reported to the state as well as those that help our staff guide their instruction. These tests will be given to all second through fifth grade students from January 30th through February 10th. The Iowa Assessments provide the school and district measureable, yearly progress in the areas of reading, vocabulary, math, and science. This test is also used to measure the annual yearly progress of our students. We greatly appreciate the extra attention of our parents in ensuring that students are at school on time, well rested and have a good breakfast each day of testing.

Healthy New Year’s Resolutions for Preschoolers and Elementary Aged
Children
It is hard to believe it is the end of 2011! I encourage you to discuss with your children some New Year’s health resolutions as self improvement goals. Here are some suggestions or you can make up some of your own that have personal meaning! Preschoolers
• I will clean up my toys. • I will brush my teeth twice a day. • I will wash my hands after going to the
bathroom and before eating. • I won’t tease dogs-‐ even friendly dogs. I will
avoid being bitten by keeping my fingers and face away from their mouths.
School aged children ages 5-‐12 yrs old • I will drink milk and water, and limit soda and
fruit drinks. • I will apply sunscreen before I go outdoors. I
will try to stay in the shade whenever possible and wear a hat and sunglasses especially when I’m playing sports.
• I will always wear a helmet when on my bike, scooter or skateboard.
• I will find a sport or activity that I like and do it at least three times a week.
• I will wear my seatbelt every time I get in a car. I’ll sit in the backseat and use a booster until I am tall enough to use a lap/shoulder belt.
• I will be nice to other kids. I will be friendly to kids who need friends like someone who is shy or new to my school.
• I will clean up after myself at home • I will not give out personal information such
as my name, school name, address, or phone number on the internet. I will not use the computer without my parent’s permission.
• I will be responsible for bringing all I need to school each day-‐ coat, hat, boots, homework, band instrument, library books, etc.
Have fun with putting together your own! Ms. Schmidt-‐ Wallace Nurse 278-‐1251

The Amazing Reading Race
Please take the time to read with your elementary age student or have them read on their own each day. This is ESPECIALLY important for developing a readers skills over time. Please post, at home, the Amazing Reading Race Log and check off the boxes as your child completes his/her daily reading goal. The first logs are due when students return to school . Remember that student vocabulary development and reading fluency will reflect the extra time and effort put into reading! Your support is always appreciated!
